Ataraxia Koilos

Descriptions

Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 40
Birthday: 14th of Summer, 474 AV
Birthplace: Alvadas

Appearance:

A glance at Ataraxia would be sufficient to form in one's mind the vague impression of someone old before his time, with his graying hair, slightly stooped posture and the faint wrinkles on his face; this, however, would be contrasted by the presence of a well-groomed beard and carefully-waxed mustache.

A cataract-afflicted left eye stares blankly into darkness, while the other green eye, its light undiminished, compensates for its crippled partner with an unusual acuity and liveliness, perhaps one of the few remnants of his life in Alvadas.

Standing at roughly 6 feet, Ataraxia would present an imposing figure - more so with an acceptable physique developed over years of labour and gardening - if he did not habitually stoop most of the time. Having more important matters in mind, Ataraxia pays little attention to his hair, choosing only to comb it back so as not to block his eye.

Another ever-present feature is the briar pipe, lit and smoking or not, a permanent feature in Ataraxia's mouth - the bit firmly held down by his teeth, it is one of the few items he has to remind him of his father.

He may typically be seen with his weathered flat cap.

Character Concept

Ataraxia lives day to day in a reasonably calm mood, enjoying the company of his perpetual companion, the feline 'empress' Kyrie, while going about his daily business.

He finds delight in the simplest of matters - the feel of sand trickling through his fingers, a strangely-shaped leaf that fell from high above, or the gentle lapping of waves against his feet.

All that he does is unhurried, having learnt the virtue of patience after tending to many a plant. Even so, time-sensitive matters are attended to promptly.

Ataraxia has not given much thought to morality in general, and goes only by what he honestly believes would be the best outcome of the situation. Having cracked a few heads with his long spade, fighting is not something he shys from - though he would certainly consider it too troublesome to get into a fight.

A deep melancholy permeates his entire body at times - he will speak little then, choosing to smoke pipe after pipe instead and delight in playing with smoke, as if it distracted him from something more important.

Though he has moved on from the death of his family, on the day the Valterrian started he will always hold a private ceremony for his family, devoting time alone to remembering their time together before finding a few friends for a drink and a smoke.

Ataraxia holds no bonds to any god except Leth and Caiyha - the former because of the many nights he has spent contemplating his life under the light of the Moon, and the latter because of the fauna he holds dear to himself - though he still has a certain wariness, for she holds sway over wilderness. Even so, he does not consider himself one of their followers, for he has no want to be closer to them.

He holds only vague notions about magic, even though living in Alvadas has exposed him to quite a few types. He does not hold any desire to learn magic - unless it'd help him in his gardening, but there still exists a sense of wariness, originating from his less-than-enjoyable experience of the Djed storm.

Character History

A quiet childhood (as quiet as living in Alvadas could be) was spent tending gardens belonging to Alvads that hired his Drykas father; their daily routine varied very little, unless it were to join in the various festivities that brought much cheer to the residents.

In contrast, the rebellious teenager sought adventure beyond the ever-changing city, taking up a life of menial labour aboard his uncle's Palivar for some years with his parents' blessings, learning little about the nautical life, but picking up some of the Svefra tongue, an interest in the ways of the crossbow, and a delight for water and the sea, the latter of which would soon manifest itself in his later garden designs.

Having sated his desire for freedom, the still-young Ataraxia returned to Alvadas, picked up his father's trade and spent his days either ministering to what gardens he was hired to nurture or exploring the Garden of No Return, delighting in the fauna that he could discover.

And then the Djed Storm came, and took away all that he held dear.

Two years he spent picking up the pieces of his broken home, mourning and coming to terms with the disappearance of his family before he packed his things and fled Alvadas for Riverfall - the city he had only sighted from a far distance, no longer able to find any joy in the ever-shifting facades of Ionu's city.

Magic:

Ataraxia doesn't really know what to say about magic - having lived in Alvadas, he's certainly used - or as accustomed as a born-and-bred Alvad could be - to experiencing strange things every second of his life. He's seen the magical displays of dancing fire and water by a juggling troupe, watched a company of harlequins shift and morph their forms as easily as he breathed air in strange arabesques, but he's never seen the need to actually learn any of them, especially the offensive-based magicks.

Kyrie - a stray cat Ataraxia adopted after the worst of the Djed Storm had passed by. Capricious and majestic (despite her being slightly smaller than the average cat), she will only consent to be borne by Ataraxia on his shoulders or in his backpack.
