APPEARANCE

Placed in a lineup, Finnegan looks like most everyone else in Zeltiva’s working class: skin dark and kissed by the sun, shoulders broad and legs thick, palms rough and callused, bearing the physical memory of the wooden beams of a ship, of hauling nets full to bursting with wriggling, squirming fish. His dark hair is long and coarse, and always tied back from his face in a bun or a braid. He carries himself quietly, and despite standing just under six feet tall, slouches into himself when he walks so as to avoid drawing attention. His chin and neck are covered with poorly-trimmed facial hair, and his eyebrows are as full as the hair on his head. Despite his natural tan, his skin is dotted by freckles and moles, which bloom even more in the Summer months. A thin but long scar runs up the left side of his face, from jaw to cheekbone, years old.


HISTORY

Finn was raised by two working class parents, and spent his youth following them to the shipyard to help or to occupy himself when they had gone. It felt natural to him to follow in his parents’ footsteps and work in the shipyard, and when he was fifteen years old he began to work wherever he could.

In the Summer of 509 AV, Finn met Simon, the son of a tradeswoman who had brought Simon to begin his apprenticeship in the family trade. Finn was reluctant to speak to Simon, both because he loathed distracting himself from his work and because the young man was clearly wealthier, but his shyness only served as fuel for Simon. He was persistent, returning whenever he could to chatter seemingly about anything he could think of; sometimes he teased Finn, obviously attempting to get a rise out of him, and other days he would say nothing for long stretches of time, trying to outlast the other in quiet. Eventually his persistence paid off, and slowly the two became friends.

By the time the blight swept through Zeltiva, Finn and Simon were nearly inseparable. Finn was devastated when Simon became feverish, although Simon always laughed his illness off as a poorly-timed joke by some god or another. As panic spread through the city and the body count racked up and up and up, Simon’s good fortune and spirits wavered, and he was bedridden for good. Simon’s parents’ trade was nearly destroyed by the blight, and after weeks of tense deliberation between the whole family (and often with Finn sitting by, desperately trying to calm Simon down), it was decided that when their next ship set sail for Syliras, the family would be going with them, and staying permanently. As Simon was too sick to travel, he was instructed to stay in Zeltiva until he was well enough and join his parents in Syliras.

As Simon slowly seemed to be getting well again, Finn asked him repeatedly to stay with his family until he had to leave, but Simon insisted that he wouldn’t risk spreading his illness to Finn’s parents. Finn was eventually able to wear Simon down, and Simon agreed that he would stay with Finn until his imminent departure only after Finn offered to rent a small flat for the duration.

In 512 AV Simon’s illness rapidly took a turn for the worst, and he died in the Spring.

Since Simon’s passing, Finn retreated further into himself. He continues to work aimlessly in the shipyard and stays in the flat that he had shared briefly with Simon.
