33rd Day of Fall 515 AV

Water and fire.

By the next sunset that was all Kaitanu could conjure up in his mind out of the chaos. It was a day that changed so many things, but started out with only the rain and the inconvenience of not sleeping in his own bed. The kelvic was used to giving up his own comfort, but he had to admit that he missed the warmth of the tent and Kyo snoring in the bedroll next to his. Sharing quarters with the other kelvic was different than being crammed into a small, dank space among many slaves. Or, as he was now, half-asleep in horse form and standing up beside Wendigo under a tent roof. Knowing any comfort at all meant he also knew what it was to miss it. That was a new circumstance.

These were small matters to the former slave, even before the sudden attack put everything else from his mind. Kaitanu endured every hardship as he always did, without so much as an internal murmur. The thought of returning to his tent that night was something to look forward to. Even more so gathering with everyone around the campfire, which always seemed to burn no matter what the weather. Had Kaitanu been used to questioning things, he would wonder how that could be. The fire stood under open sky, but there seemed to be an invisible __________something which lessened the effects of the weather within the pavilion. Some distant part of him felt this was odd, but mostly he accepted it as a given and focused on other things, like the singing and stories and the laughter. Even now, in the cold, wet, pre-dawn air, Kaitanu felt a warmth in his chest just thinking of the pavilion and the others there. What a strange protection to have against the elements; inward instead of outside like armor, or a coat. The rain hardly seemed to matter. Kaitanu didn’t really know what this sensation was but he held it close and quiet; the first embers of a new fire.

His long hours of thinking over these things were interrupted by shuffling sounds from one of the nearby tents- Kelna Nightrider’s. It lay near the corral gate and the shelters where the horses slept in bad weather. Apart from the steady rain not much had happened the night before, and as the hidden sun rose for a new day so did she. Kaitanu could hear her huffing as she put on her boots and cloak, and rubbed her hands together against the cold. The other workers would be coming around soon. Time for another day.

Waking fully himself, Kaitanu looked about and took in a deep draught of air, filling his sensitive horsey nose with it. How would the weather be today? The scent was musty, full of dead, wet grass and mud and damp horses. Another deep breath and a flick of his ears told him that the air had shifted a bit. Instead of clinging it began to shift about. A few bells ago the rain had finally started to let up, and though it still fell the curtain was not so thick. Just beyond the edge of the shelter, Kaitanu could see the first silver light of morning. It gleamed in irregular streaks between the black of the clouds, as though some huge creature had rent the night sky with its claws. Perhaps today the sun might break through at last. Everyone would be glad of that.

Jasmine laid on her pallet still asleep having woken up several times due to the loud thunder the blond had fought through all night. Slowly eye lids fluttered open showing the blue orbs glazed over as she awoke. She sat up and stretched some trying to get completely woken up. Rubbing the sleep from her eyes Jasmine stood up with a groan and opened her tent flap to see the rain had finally stopped at some point during the night. Looking up at the sky some of Syna's light was beginning to show through. Contently the woman turned and began her early morning ritual of waking up.

After brushing her hair and getting dressed the blond slid on her boots before walking out. Yawning still she went to see if Chaser was up and moving yet. Knowing he also had a very restless night did not bring Jasmine any comfort as her eyes landed upon said stallion. He was fast asleep and did not appear like he would be easily woken up either. Sighing she decided against taking him at the moment. If Kelena still wanted to move the horses around she would run home and grab the stallion. Given he would still very likely have to be bribed into getting up and cooperating.

Traipsing through the mud was proving to be a very difficult and irritating process to go through. Soon the woman spotted the Guided Horse. Hurrying along she went under the tarp and looked around. Many of the horses seemed very on edge. Looking around Jasmine soon remembered that Kaitanu had been asked to stay with all the horses. Though he was really only there for one particularly agitated stallion.

"Kaitanu! You awake?" Jasmine called and finally spotted him as well as several other horses.

In his usual fashion as a horse, Kaitanu bowed his head in response to Jasmine’s greeting. Aside from Kelna she was the only one who ever took any positive notice of him; it felt nice. Very like Kyo’s presence made him feel. Kyo had called him ‘friend’ more than once. Was Jasmine his friend? Kaitanu hadn’t asked; he didn’t feel it was his place. He didn’t know if that mattered so much. The warmth in his chest was still there, buffering him further against the wet and chilly air. Who knew being noticed could do such things?

Kaitanu watched for a little while as Jasmine was called off by Kelna for that day’s chores. From the shelter tent he could see all of the horses, and far beyond across the grey plains, above which rose misty hills. It was the first time in days even his keen eyes could find them. Next to him, Wendigo was beginning to stir. If the raised earth of the corral drained enough he might be allowed to exercise the stallion, which would help to improve Wendigo’s mood. Kelna was going about each shelter and making sure of the horses, and when she came to the night-dark stallion he only snorted at her in irritation.

“No more bite left in you?” she chuckled. Wendigo had been trying to take someone’s hand off since day one.

Switching to Common, she ordered Kaitanu to change to his human form and help Jasmine feed the horses. Wendigo would not need a bandage change for several more hours, and Ashka, the Seme mare, would keep him calm until then. Now was the time for the day’s work to begin.

Obediently, Kaitanu stepped out into the open air to make his transformation. It was never a good idea to shift while standing right next to a horse, especially one like Wendigo. That meant a chilly trot back under the tent to grab his clothing, but Kaitanu wasn’t really thinking about it. His mind was on his work, and on the day ahead. As he made his way to a bare spot of earth, the wind shifted from the southwest, gathering speed. Around him the tents flapped a little, and the trees which screened their camp whispered as their boughs let go of last night’s rain. It was a short gust, but enough to fill his wide nostrils with a new scent. In this form instinct was stronger for the moment than orders. Pausing, head raised and ears swiveled forward, Kaitanu breathed the air more deeply. Beyond the strong smell of earth, of horses, of wet fabric and hair, of men and wood and smoke, something else lurked. Something….unfamiliar….

Instinct gave way to Kelna’s orders almost immediately, but as Kaitanu felt his pale body shrink back to human size, the sense of wrongness didn’t change. Nor was he the only one who had become uneasy. Kaitanu noticed the other horses drinking in the air and fidgeting more than usual. Not that they, or the kelvic, knew what was coming. Being at the very gates of the tent city meant they were subject to all manner of new smells whenever outsiders came by for a rest. Kaitanu assumed that was what he had scented on the air, and as soon as he pulled on his clothing he went to Kelna to let her know. After all they had to be ready for guests, no matter what ungodly hour they came in.

However, the kelvic had not gotten a foot away from the tent when something else caught his senses, and sent a different kind of shudder through every limb than cold air. Dark shapes in the grass yards away, just visible between the trunks of the few trees, hidden from all but the keenest eyes. Kaitanu froze, watching the shadows' progress. They were human, but moving carefully, not wishing to be seen, using the quickly dissolving mists for cover. If the wind had not shifted they would have remained hidden and unscented until it was too late.

Jasmine got the list of horses that were brought in the previous day and noted which had been given their feed. Not but about three had already been feed so she walked over to the buckets and got two buckets full before walking over to the first horse. It was a beautiful solid black mare with gentle brown eyes. She had not shown anything that would cause Jasmine to believe her a violent horse.

"Hey, beautiful," The blonde said with a smile and held the bucket up in the mist allowing her to eat.

The mare snorted and eagerly began to eat her food. Looking over the woman smiled and waved to Kaitanu spotting him coming to help. She said good morning to the young man while still holding the bucket up. The misty foggy morning made the woman a little nervous. Coming from normally sunny and clear days on the plains the rare foggy day made her anxious. It was the unknown of predators that freaked her out. She had hoped to go hunting this day, but the weather hindered her from doing that. Kaitanu's sudden change in behavior caused the woman to pull her head out of her thoughts and look around. Several horses were pulling on their leads trying to get free. Something wasn't right about what was going on. Once the mare pulled away finished the blonde quickly put the bucket back under the tent and moved to him.

"What's going on?" Jasmine asked looking where he was looking as well.

Something did not feel right as the woman raced back inside shouting for Kelena. The other woman walked out as well looking towards the fog sensing something off. The figures continued darting through the haze putting the elder on edge. She turned to the blonde quickly giving her orders before going to try and find the male kelvic.

“Quickly, Jasmine get all the horses untethered and ready to ride. We need to keep them out of harms way and ready for riders to arrive,” Kelena said turning to the woman.

The blonde nodded and raced off to get the horses ready. Everything was far too quiet making all the animals nervous and twitchy. The woman tried to keep them as calm as possible, while getting them untethered and returned to their pavilions. Or at least the few she knew the family of, some members of the pavilions were up and thanked the girl for dropping off their striders. Upon returning to the Guided Horse Jasmine walked up and checked on the injured horses. Knowing there was no way she could ride them to their pavilion. Chaser let out a loud neigh and raced to where she was as if trying to get her attention.

Jasmine looked up to the stallion confused about what he was doing. Raising her hand the horse pushed his nose into it almost trying to bite her wrist. Jerking her arm back the woman got a serious look on her face. The male horse knew better than to bite at the girl. She had made it very clear to never do such a thing, or at least try to. FFFPT! Jasmine let the noise come from between her lips. Kelena had told her that much like resetting the brain. A sudden new noise would snap the horses out of any undesired behavior. Chaser snorted and shook out his mane grabbed her cloak and pulled her almost over.

“Chaser! That's enough! What has gotten into you?” Jasmine asked with a glare.

The woman did not understand the creatures sudden change in behavior. Did the fog have him on edge? Did he not like that she was not paying attention to him? Shaking her head the girl walked over to start untying the horses from outside. Calling out several horses raced off home to their owners. SNAP! Jerking her head around blue eyes fought to see what could be seen through the fog. Fear gripped her as the remaining animals began to move in scared patterns. Running back inside the woman got her employer to come back outside with her. The two women looked around trying to find what was going on. The only thing heard was the joint pounding of their hears in their chests.

“Hurry up and get the injured horses away from here. They can't be ridden any way, so lets get them somewhere safe quickly. I will get my strider and run to each of their owners something isn't right,” Kelena explained before walking back inside.

Jasmine nodded and hurried back inside grabbing the yvases. Hurriedly she put them on the few hard to handle horses before using some rope to secure them to Chaser's yvas. Running over to the others, she got them racing away from the city. Mounting up the blonde followed them on Chaser. Hearing something around her a gasp left her lips seeing the attack hit. Her heart almost stopped seeing the humans attacking her people as they slept.

Everything in the blonde screamed for her to go back and help her people, but the worker in her told the girl ton continue on to safety. The horses needed a herd leader and since Kaitanu had disappeared in the chaos of getting the horses freed, Jasmine appeared to be on her own. Looking around she used Chaser to slow them all to a halt about a hundred yards out. Panting the blood in her veins raced, the blonde was not sure what to do now. All the horses were as on edge as the woman was, looking around she tried to remain calm and under control. Getting down the blonde managed to get them calmed down and quiet enough for her to hear around them. Watching the fog that surrounded them nothing appeared to move. Everything that far out seemed to have disappeared aside from the horses and young woman.

“Chaser, I have a bad feeling buddy,” Jasmine said.

It felt like hours had passed since she had left with the horses. There were so many unanswered questions rolling around in the blonde's head. Rubbing her arms she tried to keep as calm as possible; she could just barely hear screaming. Tears slowly started to roll down her cheeks as her body shook holding in the sobs. A light in the distance marked the city and her people. Sniffing she heard everything go silent for several chimes before what sounded like victory calls, but it was not her people. Dread slowly inched its way into her heart, the woman mounted up and turned back towards the city. She watched as her employer sent an arrow to her letting her know to return now. Clicking her teeth the blonde began herding the group of equine back towards the city. It took some time as most were tired or slow from their injuries, but finally the group made it back.

Jasmine's eyes widened seeing the destruction and dead on the ground. Shaking her head slowly the woman raced off to find her pavilion looking for anyone; that she knew amongst those slowly beginning to join the web again. Panting the girl finally reached the purple tents, riding around the edge of the clan; blue eyes spotted her mother and father's striders. Pulling the stallion to a stop she hurried into the tents looking, finally finding her father injured in the main tent. Rose grabbed her daughter into a hug, when she knelt down. Glancing around the woman noticed that it just appeared to possessions missing, but the family was okay and alive.
