Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Ialari chose to set aside a day to spend doing nothing but enjoying the comfort of her Dominion. While she used to do this quite often over the years, since her arrival in Riverfall and The Sanctuary she hadn’t spent as much time with her Dominion as she normally did. Part of bonding and communing with one’s Dominion involved spending time there, breathing the air, experiencing the sights and sharing one’s thoughts with it. While the Dominion itself wasn’t necessarily sentient, it did react to the Domineer’s presence over time by slowly shaping itself to suit the mage while also sharing a bit of itself as well. Ialari would often commune with her Dominion by just speaking aloud. She would talk about her thoughts, feelings, how her day went, things she had learned; it didn’t really matter what she talked about though. Whatever the topic, it gave her the sense that there was somebody on the other side, listening.

Ialari sat on the large stone overlooking the small pool of water in her Dominion. Sunlight shined down through a fissure in the ceiling, illuminating and providing a bit of comforting warmth. Arith and Reth, her two snakes, lay out on the rock as well, basking in the heat. Ialari looked on them with pride in knowing that it was her blood that had given the creatures life. As she gazed upon their jet black scales, she recalled all that she knew of snakes. They were truly amazing creatures. All of their qualities and features were such that Ialari’s family had, many centuries ago, taken on the name, Pythone, in honor of the serpent. As Ialari sat with her snakes, she began talking not only to them but also to the Dominion itself. It was a therapeutic exercise but at the same time she thought that perhaps by sharing her knowledge of snakes, maybe the Dominion would be more pliable to shaping it to better suit them.

“Did you know that snakes possess senses that are different than any other animals. See, animals rely on their senses of smell and touch.” She lightly brushed her hand down the length of Reth, the larger of the two snakes. “As you know...” She directed her some of her words to Reth, “Snakes do not have actual eyelids. Instead they have clear caps on the eyes that protect them. Also, they do not have ears like other animals. There’s a bone that can detect sound vibrations.” She thought about it a moment and continued, “I always wondered what it would be like to be able to actually feel sound instead of hearing it.” She thought that perhaps she would try to extend her senses through her Dominion to feel the sounds within as opposed to hearing them. Would it be possible? She added a mental note to attempt it in the immediate future.

She considered the way snakes used their sense of smell. Snakes, while having nostrils, do not smell like other animals. “The snake’s tongue is used in place of a nose for smelling. They smell their prey or enemies.” Ialari took a deep breath through her nose and then stuck out her tongue to taste the air. It tasted moist, but there was no smell other than what she detected through her breath. Yet another sense she would have to try channeling through the Dominion. She wondered if she may be able to actually taste the air through her Dominion and have it provided the same feelings that smelling did. It was a lofty goal but she learned long ago that in the Ukalas, nothing was impossible.

Another form of snake movement that Ialari had actually observed in her own snakes was when they climbed trees. Their body would bunch up into loops. They would move their body forward while their body straightened. It was almost like the movements of a spring that is compressed and then relaxed.

Still watching Arith crawl up her arm then over her shoulder, across her neck and back down her other arm, Ialari pictured his skeleton. She imagined what the bones must look like as he made ever movement of his body and head. In body structure, a snake was actually quite simplistic as it had no limbs. Of course she had viewed snake skeletons before but they were never actually moving on their own. They were made up of vertebrae, ribs and a skull. Speaking to Arith, “I’ve seen you eat and I’ll never not be amazed by how you do it. Some of those mice are bigger than your head.” Watching the snakes eat mice and rats was fascinating for her. The bones in their mouths are able to disjoint as they opened to accommodate larger prey. When her snakes opened their mouths around a rodent in such a manner though, the strength of their bite was crushing. She could literally hear the mouse’s bones being shattered. The jaw bones then would move one side then another to literally “walk” the prey further into their mouths as they swallowed it. Even if the rodent did survive the initial crush, the snake’s teeth were like hooks that held the animal in place.

She noted that her snakes’ teeth were like those of the constrictors she knew of as a child growing up. They had two rows of teeth on each of their upper jaws and one row on the lower jaw. They didn’t have actual fangs like poisonous snakes did. Poisonous snakes used their fangs like needles to inject poison. That was one of the first things Ialari noticed about Reth and Arith, they were not poisonous. They were also not constrictors as they did not wrap around prey, constricting it and weakening it before eating. Instead they would slowly move in on their prey, sometimes stopping to let it get closer to them on its own, then they would quickly snatch at it with their open jaws. Usually the powerful clamping motion of their jaws was enough to disable their meal before they began engulfing and swallowing it.

Speaking aloud again to her Dominion, “Sometimes I think what it would be like to be a snake. There is a strange mystery to them, an exotic and sometimes even erotic undertone to their very existence. They appear calculating, meticulous and so efficient.” She let Arith crawl from her hand back to the rock. “The creatures known as, Dhani, those sound like truly wondrous beings. I heard there is actually a place in Riverfall that acts as a nest for them. It doubles as a club of some sort, dancing, revelry, that sort of thing. I don’t know much about them beyond their serpentine duality but the thought of being around them in a place like that sounds…fun.” Fun, that was not a word Ialari usually spoke aloud. While she recognized the concept of fun, her version of it usually involved laboring over an anvil with a hammer in hand and the heat of the forge fires coating her in soot and sweat. Considering dancing, drinking and socializing as being anywhere close to fun was something of an alien concept for her.

The more she thought of snakes and of sharing her senses with her Dominion in a snake-like way and of course of the dhani, the more she wanted to visit the place called, The Coils Club. “Maybe I’ll go to that club later this evening.” The more she thought about it, the more excited she got. Deciding that it was a great time to try the sense sharing, she hopped down off the rock and walked over to an especially soft patch of softly luminescent lichen in one of the darker corners of her Dominion. It was a place she favored for meditative sessions and was perfect for opening herself up to the Dominion.

She decided to try sensing the interior of her Dominion by feeling the sounds instead of actually hearing them. It was a contradiction that did not exist in the Ukalas yet it would require a bit of focus. Sitting down on the soft lichen, she shifted a bit to get comfortable before closing her eyes. She didn’t need much to focus her thoughts on her desired goal as her mind was already moving in that direction. She first pictured what she had observed of snakes and how they reacted to movement. She recalled seeing a snake back near The Retreat in Syliras. She noticed it rather randomly one day while walking through the forest. Turning her attention to it, she tried to approach it as slow as possible. Even though she was still several feet from it, the snake took off crawling quickly in the opposite direction. She knew that the snake’s eyesight wasn’t all that great and while she knew it could likely smell her, she thought how amazing it was that it likely felt her footsteps on the ground; its mind processing that as sound coming toward it.

She concentrated on what it must have sounded like and felt like to the snake as she moved toward it. She imagined her foot slowly rising, moving forward then gently coming back down. She then imagined that she was actually hearing the footstep. It was there that the Dominion took over. It started as the slightest hint of a dull hum in her ears. As Ialari tried to listen closer, the hum began to sound less dull and hollow and more crisp and sharp. Gradually, the sound became less of a sound and more of a vibration in her head. There was a familiar rhythm to it. It took a few moments for Ialari to realize it was her own breathing. She was feeling the vibrations in the air produced by the act of her breathing. While it was a simple thing feeling, it was an odd one. While she listened to her own breathing before, she never really felt the sound the way she was now. The feeling began to change from the rhythmic vibrations of her breathing to a scraping, brushing sound that she could actually feel throughout her body.

Focusing on the new feeling was difficult as it was rather overwhelming and hard to sort out. Attempting to concentrate more on identifying the source, she found that actual identification wasn’t possible. Instead she was able to figure out more of a location and a general direction. Slowly she opened her eyes and looked in the direction she felt the movement coming from. There she saw Reth, the large female snake, crawling toward her. The sound of scraping and brushing she was feeling was the sound of the snake parting bits of grass as it crawled along the rocky ground. Although the enhanced sight perception she shared with her Dominion was far more informational, she was finally able to experience what she thought a snake did when it was feeling the sounds around it. It she would have been that snake back in the forest, she would have moved off in the opposite direction as well after feeling the vibrations moving toward it.

Her head started to throb a bit with a slight ache as she let go of the altered sense. Some of the extensions of herself into her Dominion was useful and exhilarating while others just felt odd and painful. This one was more uncomfortable that it was painful but it was something new and something shared not only with her Dominion but also with her snakes. The ache in her head though was not something she wanted to worsen so she decided to save the experimenting with other snake-like senses later. Instead, her anticipation of visiting the dhani at their club was getting the best of her. So, bidding farewell to Reth, Arith and her Dominion itself, Ialari made her way to the doorway back to The Sanctuary. Stepping down into it she stepped up and out into her chambers. She then closed the doorway and moved the bed back over the top of it.

It felt like ages since she visited any sort of club. The last time was back home in Pitrius City and it wasn’t much of a club. There hadn’t been any sort of dancing, just drink and forge-related discussions. While somewhat interesting, it was far from wild and exotic. Unsure of exactly how to prepare for a night out at a place said to be nest of snake-people, Ialari gave it a shot anyway. She decided on wearing her blue dress and black boots. In an effort to accessorize, she picked out a few seashell necklaces that she made from the few she had left after using the rest to make paint for her Dominion Door.

She didn’t own much in the way of luxurious clothing and adornments as she usually had no need for them. She wasn’t planning on showing off at all during her visit to the club as she told herself the purpose of going was to observe the dhani. Still, it would help to look presentable so she gathered her clothes and went off to the bath chamber to clean up and prepare. Sinking into the hot bath, she used a variety of shampoos, soaps and oils to make herself smell and look as presentable as possible. The idea of makeup was a foreign concept to her as the isur prided themselves on their natural beauty. As she was getting ready, she made it a point to find a mirror and see what others would be seeing. Not yet dressed, she stood in front of the large mirror. The image that looked back was one more like the person she remembered before leaving the Kingdom. Many days of eating good meals, working the forge and taking care of herself had reshaped Ialari from the thin, worn, battered wreck she had been turning into back to the strong, defined, sculpted beauty of an isur that she fondly remembered herself as being. While her body bore numerous scars from her wild experiences both in the wilds, in the Ukalas and in a few of the more unique urban locales, they gave her the appearance of one who had seen a lot and done even more. Her hair was trimmed and her face was perfectly angled with her dark eyes baring the majority of her experience in their depths. Her jet black metallic arm with its raised silver veins caught the light at varied angles that made the veins look like they were at times, glowing. She was feeling proud of her looks and was starting to look forward to sharing them with others. The thought of which however also caused an odd tickle in her gut as she couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous.

Pulling on her dress, boots and necklaces, Ialari decided that any more self-admiration or fuss about her looks would not get her any closer to going to the club and observing the dhani. She didn’t exactly know what to expect once there but she was pretty certain it would be a thrilling experience even if all she did was sit and watch.

Taking her fur cloak along with her to help battle the cold, Ialari set off for Riverfall. It was a short couple of miles south to the city with the night just starting. She still hadn’t warmed up to the idea of riding a horse on her trips to the city. One reason was she had no idea how to ride one and the other was that she simple wasn’t all that comfortable around them. Sure, she forged horseshoes and other saddle accessories for Santuary’s horses yet she simply didn’t share the same affinity for them that Kavala did.

The journey to Riverfall took only a short amount of time and was uneventful. Ialari had heard of the occasional zith attack along the road but in the cold of winter there seemed to be little sign of anything like that being an immediate danger. Once she arrived at the city and gained entry through the gates, she wandered the city a bit while asking directions to the club. Someone at The Sanctuary told her that it was on the city’s second tier but the exact location wasn’t mentioned. So, after asking around, Ialari learned where the club was at and made her way there.

Even with the knowledge of where to find the club, Ialari had a little difficulty locating it. The entrance was not well advertised and Ialari actually passed it by a couple of times before finally noticing the small sign baring the club’s name. When she found it, she felt a little dumb for not noticing it the first time. The stone archway that offered entry inside was carved with snakes which once she found it, seemed more than obvious. Stepping inside she was greeted with soft music coming from a musician sitting in the corner of a stage. As it was still early, the club was not all that busy. There was a large open floor in front of the stage with a long bar built into the cliff capable of seating quite a few people. There were tables along the opposite wall which left the main room quite open.

Moving further inside, Ialari noted the rather a large human male standing just inside the door. He was easily over six feet tall with broad shoulders and a stocky build. He was bald with a number of unique tattoos stretching across his chest and arms. He wore loose fitting trousers belted at the waist and a pair of boots. He wore no weapons that Ialari could see. For a human, he was quite defined and looked as though he took care of his appearance. While many wouldn’t focus as much on such things, to Ialari, a powerful, well-kept body was quite appealing. He must be…oh what do they call them…a bouncer? She thought as she looked at him. That was the term used to describe those who keep the rabble that were common to taverns in check. Back home, there was little need for such individuals since even the drunkest, obnoxious isur knew better than to cause trouble in such a place. It was considered disrespectful of the tavern owner to cause too much of a problem and often left the tavern owner personally challenging the offender to a bout of boxing or a wrestling match outside. Drunks usually ended up being carried back to their homes by friends or family to recover from the beating.

There were a few other people in the club as well. A group of Akalak sat at a table having a few drinks and engaging in conversation that Ialari didn’t really care enough about to listen to. There were a handful of humans, a couple males and a couple of females mingling about. A human woman sat to one side of the stage playing music on a stringed instrument of some sort while another large, stocky human with short brown hair sat at the bar. A human woman with long dark hair and a dark, loose-fitting dress tended the bar.

The tavern was dimly lit and the music was soft and not unpleasant. When she entered, Ialari became the center of attention much to her discomfort. With the population of Riverfall being dominated by male Akalak and married or claimed women, single women living in the city were something of a rarity. Ialari, being an isur and female made her stand out even more than she was comfortable with. It was a fact that she had only experienced bits and pieces of to that point as she spent most of her time at The Sanctuary and then didn’t exactly make herself socially available to very many.

Not knowing exactly how to handle the looks her direction, Ialari cautiously made her way to the bar. Her discomfort was leading to really want a drink. As she approached the bar, she took a seat several spots down from the man with brown hair.

The woman behind the bar approached and asked in the Common Tongue, “Hello there, isss there sssomething I can get for you?”

The way the woman spoke immediately struck Ialari as being unique. Something about the way she exaggerated the sounds of some of her words made Ialari pause. In an attempt to not seem too rude, Ialari nodded and asked for the strongest beer available. Though Ialari wasn’t much of a drinker, actually she wasn’t a drinker at all, she felt in the mood for something strong. There was also the isur curse of needing strong drink to get the same effects that non-isur got from lesser drink. Ialari however, not having had anything with an alcohol content for years, was in for an awakening.

The bartender raised an eyebrow, smiled and after some work behind the bar, presented Ialari with a mug filled with a frothy brew. Ialari, not wanting to seem squeamish or any more awkward than she was already feeling, took the mug in her metallic hand and swallowed a hefty gulp of the dark liquid presented to her. The beer was extremely bitter and quite strong. Ialari fought the urge to scrunch her face and spit it out. Mirroring what she had seen humans do in similar situations, she took another hard gulp that, while still revolting, actually helped diminish the nastiness of the first.

Ignoring any lingering glances, Ialari stared into her beer. She didn’t plan on feeling so out of place. She didn’t expect it to be the easiest of experiences but she was out of her element and exposed. It was a feeling that she hadn’t felt since her first day spent among the undead of Sahova.

Ialari jumped a little as she looked up and said with an uneasy voice, heavily ac cented in isur, “I…don’t get out much.” She immediately felt dumb.
The bartender smiled and said, “I can sssee that. Tell me, whatss your name, misss.”

Ialari felt a little more at ease speaking with the woman. There was just something about her that Ialari found comfortingly familiar. “Ialari Pythone. I’m new to the city. It’s…strange.”

Ialari didn’t see it but the bartender flashed an intrigued look at the mention of Ialari’s name. Without pause she said, “Strange indeed. So, Ialari Pythone, what brings an isur to the city of Riverfall. A little far from home aren’t you?”

Ialari braved another drink of her beer, this one tasting less revolting than the last two. “I…I’m looking for something.”

“That’s rather vague. Come on, what are you looking for? What could bring an isur so far from home to a city on the sea; a city filled with blue-skinned brutes.” The bartender chuckled lightly. “I’m Lllasssnia, by the way. I’m the owner.”

Looking a bit surprised at hearing that the bartender she was speaking with was also the owner the owner of a place Ialari heard was also a dhani nest, she took yet another drink, this one actually starting to taste pretty good. “I’m looking for who I really am.” The answer Ialari gave was as honest as she could manage without making things more complicated.

Lllasssnia chuckled again, “Isn’t that what we all are sssearching for? Who we really are? What we really want out of life? Thisss place, it is my gift to those who sssimply want to be who they are without having to worry about what othersss want of them. The world can be a horrible place. At least here, you can be whatever you want to be.”

The beer was starting to have an effect. Ialari heard Lllasssnia’s words and it felt as though there was a greater meaning behind what was said. Feeling the alcohol, Ialari paused in her drinking. She wasn’t ready to give up that much of herself, not yet.

Lllasssnia refilled Ialari’s mug and said, “We all need to let go every once and awhile. You’re sssafe here, Miss Pythone. Enjoy yourssself and maybe you’ll learn a little bit more about what you’re sssearching for."

The mix of music and drink was starting to take its toll on Ialari’s senses. There was also a pleasant smell of incense in the air that served to enhance the environment with a welcoming feel. Ialari knew she was suffering from the effects of too much alcohol consumed in such a short amount of time. Even so, she didn’t fight it. Though she didn’t take another drink for a while, she still felt herself loosening up; feeling more open and free. She failed to notice Lllasssnia take her leave from behind the bar. Moments later, the music stopped. A few minutes later, it started up again but with a different melody. This one was slower, softer and more intimate feeling. As she glanced over at the stage, Ialari saw Lllasssnia walk into the center. There were a few more people filing into the club as the music continued. Lllasssnia began to dance. It was slow, sensuous and alluring even to Ialari. As the woman danced, Ialari was left in awe at what she witnessed. The bartender, now dancer, began to slowly transform. Her legs gave way to a long, scaled tail while her arms retracted into her body and her neck elongated. In a short amount of time, the woman that had served Ialari a drink a moment before had fully transformed into a massive snake. Glistening, golden scales glittered in the dim light and a large forked tongue darted between a huge set of powerful jaws.

The great form of the snake swayed, curled and slithered to the music and those assembled in the club too were entranced by the magical movements of the giant serpent. As Ialari looked on, she failed to notice the man with the short brown hair switching seats to be closer to her. Where she had sat roughly a dozen seats away, the man had now moved within two seats of being next to her. Her attention was still on the fantastic sight of the huge creature that so elegantly moved upon the stage.
