Triphilar

Postby Triphilar on July 6th, 2016, 8:12 pm

History, Appearance, and Concept
”Tragedy has paved my path, but joy is in the future.”

Appearance
Standing just shorter than average and with no distinguishing features, Triphilar is far from a spectacle. His eyes gleam with the slightly wild look that comes from changing his body almost all his life. Occasionally he forgets to return a feature, leaving a cat's eye or a hand full of claws instead of their normal counterparts. Sometimes he even mimics the facial features of those he meets. Mostly, however, he is an unassuming and humble man who seems to have vaguely Drykas features.

History
The story begins with the death of a great Pavilion in the Sea of Grass and the flight of the last remaining Drykas daughter. Mora's family was shattered on the swift wings of a Zith attack. Her father, the Ankal Tribic, and both his sons were killed defending the Shiftwind pavilion from the sky-born horrors. The women were taken as slaves and the boys and girls went the same way. Mora only survived because she was visiting a suitor at another pavilion with her mother, a few leagues away.

Mora realized that life had just comes underwing down around her. Her mother spiraled into a deep depression, for she was old by then and deeply in love with Tribic.  The loss of her husband, who had only ever married once, and for love and loyalty, made the woman sick. For months Mora and her mother trailed behind the Clan's other pavilions, astride the donkeys gifted by a sympathetic neighbor. But Mora was unable to provide any sustenance whilst caring for a mother who could not provide either. Eventually it was too much and the old Drykas woman succumbed to her Illness. Nothing weak survived long in the Sea of Grass.

This last death was the breaking point for Mora. She left her home to go west. Fleeing the horrors of her past the young Drykas woman wandered west until she reached Riverfall. In the city of the Akalaks she found a place of wonder and beauty she had not experienced previously. But it was not far enough from the Sea of Grass for her broken heart. She booked passage across the Suvan to Alvadas.

In the city of illusions she found a different kind of beauty. The city itself was not much to her liking, with its wild changes and mysteries. But she did find something that made her decide to stay, a man.

Ephilar was charming and empathetic. He listened to her story and did not hesitate to offer his aid. They spent increasing amounts of time together, exploring the city and bonding. Eventually their friendship grew into more and Ephilar and Mora were married.

The Alvadan brought his wife into his home, supporting her with his wages from working magics for various important persons and businesses inside the city. Mora got a job as a stablehand, caring for horses as she had done back home. The unlikely pair were happily able to make a life for themselves.

Eventually they decided to grow their family by one and Triphler was born. The boy grew to walk and talk in a loving home in the City of Illusions, but his mother always taught him the ways of her heritage. Mora Shiftwind would always speak to the boy in Pavi, struggling to keep the stories of her family and her Pavilion alive.

Eventually it was time to grow their family again, and Mora once again became pregnant. But there are many dangers in Mizahar, not least of which is childbirth. The little family was broken by the loss of Mora and the little girl that never got to experience the world. There was no spiral of depression or need to leave. Ephilar and Triphilar instead sought comfort in each other. The father and son grew closer and closer together, spending hours studying the magics that kept Ephilar employed.

Triphilar became his fathers assistant and his teenage years were spent devouring the secrets of their magic whilst trying to forget the wounds of his mother and sister's deaths. He was consumed by the study of magic and the sparse bits of Nader Canoch that his father was able to impart, so much so that his Pavi grew weaker. Triphilar was being groomed to take his place by his father's side when yet another tragedy struck.

Ephilar grew ambitious in one of his tasks, taking on too much too quickly. The father gave in to the whispers that plague all mages. The over-giving left him hollow and insane. Triphilar watched as his father spiraled into insanity, paranoia, and flashes of anger completely unlike himself. The youth was forced to abandon his attempt to take up his father's workload. He and Ephilar spent months locked away in their home, with Ephilar unstable and dangerous, and Triphilar desperately trying to keep his father from killing both of them.

Eventually the stress culminated in Ephilar accusing Triphilar of secretly trying to steal his magic. It became a shouting match and Ephilar threatened to throw his son out on the street. When Triphilar tried to calm him, Ephilar became inexplicably fearful. He fled from the house and when Triphilar gave chase he watched his father morph into a snowy owl and take flight. The youth never saw him again after that.

All the tragedies in his life had caused Triphilar changes, but none more than the loss of this final link. With no family and a home full of sad memories, Triphilar decided to leave the city much as his mother had fled the Sea of Grass before him. Taking what little gold left in the house and the Yvas his mother had never been able to let go of, Triphilar set out east. He traveled along the path his mother had traversed so many years before.

Seeking the only future he could see for himself, Triphilar has made his way to the Sea of Grass. He hopes to make a life with the people of his mother's family.

Concept
Now motivated by a singular goal of recreating the family his mother left behind, Triphilar seeks to find stability. He will carve it out of the Sea of Grass himself since there are none left to do it for him. Though he has never spent any time with the Drykas, he is eager to prove his worth and build the legacy he had been denied.

Driven and toughened by loss, Triphilar may not be the warrior type of the Drykas, but he is far from a coward. The youth does not shrink from an obstacle in the way of his goals. He has the tenacity of one who has lost all and can only climb. But on the surface this drive is tempered by a mild manner and a slow temper. The young wizard prefers to find other methods of solving problems than anger. Anger is the wasted energy of those not clever enough to find a better solution.
