The few bells of sunlight had only just started to shine when Nemori set out from the hold. It was a pleasant day following light snow and it had settled nicely. The first few layers of snow folded quickly upon being stepped on for the first time. The white elk stables was her destination for today. Work, not adventure. The path was familiar to her, one she had been walking as long as she could walk. The large wooden building was surrounded by flat, white land and she could see trails of hooves darting through the snow. The animals were mostly free to roam within the snow, and most of them were accustomed to the cold against their feet. A few of the elk and horses were already out, enjoying the bells of sunshine for the day. The closest elk to her was an older one. Its fur glittered with strands of grey as it moved slowly through the snow. The land was almost unusually grazable. She saw the older elk force its way through layers of snow to the vegetation underneath. Her walk found her outside the large barn doors. The entranceway arched above her. The doors had been propped open. She could hear a few animals snorting or rattling around in their beds inside, they were lounging inside. It was darker inside the stables, the beams blocking some of light glaring off the snow. Some snow had been trailed into the building but it quickly gave way to solid wooden boards. She found a candle on a plate besides the door and lit it. Her hand wrapped around the flame to protect it from any wind as she carried it into the stable. The orange light showing her the way. A few of the animals appeared to see the intruder and occasionally she would greet them with a gently pet, being wary to keep the flame away from them. When she reached the back of the stable she placed the candle down, allowing its light to illuminate the back wall. Saddles hung on the wall and the smell of leather wafted through the air. They looked recently polished. Everything seemed so familiar. She relished the familiarity, enjoying the simplicity of everything. She placed the candle upon one of the beams. It threw its light across the stable from its position.

Her fingers found the items she needed, varieties of brushes with different purposes and small metal implements that would have looked out of place to some people. A pot full of water had been left and she dragged it slowly over to a small stone fireplace and placed a wooden bucket nearby. The pot was heavy and the wood on the handle dug into her fingers slightly when she lifted it. She was glad she did not have to carry it far. She dragged it over to a small stone fire pit. A few logs and twigs had already been stacked up inside. The bucket found itself near a black pot and Nemori turned her attention to the fire wood, adjusting it slightly. It was mostly set up and for this she was thankful. She used the candle to light some of the smaller sections of the fire and stayed watching it smoulder and attempt to light for a while. It took her two attempts to light it but eventually took and the flames started to lick around the wood. She smiled, pleased that she had not needed to seek help this time. Getting a fire started was always a tricky task. After she returned the candle to its safe location she started to pour the bucket of water into the pot. It did not take long and she was soon able to hang the pot above the fire pit. With a stick she poked the firewood once more, ensuring that it had not gone out while she was not paying it attention. It was catching well and she hoped that she would not have to wait long. She did not need the water to be boiling, in fact that would be harmful. Her intent was for the water to be pleasantly warm and this was the only way of achieving that goal. After Nemori had watched the flames flicker and spread for a while she felt something cold press against her back. It almost caused her to jump but she forced her reaction to restrain itself. AS she had suspected it was merely one of the elk coming to investigate. This was the reason she had to stay so close to the fire herself, the animals were likely to try and inspect it.
“Hold on a second” Nemori whispered, softly petting the elk. “I’m waiting on the water” The elk whined in reply, his horns waving as he moved. “Be careful” Nemori finished, turning her attention back to the water. Every so often a small bubble would rise to the surface and Nemori was starting to feel impatient. Part of her wondered if other places found this task less tedious, the biting cold of the snow covered land did not aid her job. Gently she tapped a finger against the surface of the water, the small motion caused ripples to form across the water. The temporary touch was enough to inform her the water was not yet heated. She sighed, twisting around slightly to look at the elk. He had lost interest in her and was picking at some of the wooden beams with his teeth. “We have to replace that, you know” The comment was more passive then chastising and it was perhaps this tone that meant the elk ignored her and continued his chosen task.

The Friendly Elk

It took Nemori two more tests before the water was finally warm enough to use. She shifted it from the stand, straining at the weight of it. The elk stared at her, watching the movement. She tipped the water back into the bucket, being more careful not to spill any this time. Her next task was to put out the fire. She grabbed another bucket, this time filled with snow and tipped it onto the fire in an attempt to smother it. She used more of the bucket of snow then she had intended but it did the job. The remaining firewood was scattered outside so that the snow and cold could pull the heat away from it and remove any change of it relighting. She did not want to be the cause of the long used stable setting alight. She would never live down the shame of it. When she returned she found the elk had shuffled closer to the bucket and was sniffing it. “Out” She yelled. He seemed to startle and step backwards a bit, his hooves clattering against the stone. She shook her head. She was only gone a few ticks. The water was not warm enough to cause harm but she did not wish to have to reboil it because they had decided warm water was better, again. Occasionally Nemori would wonder at the logic of those kept at the stables. Despite being given perfectly good, clean water they would often ignore it for any other water they could find. Puddles where the snow had melted, buckets that had been left out for a night. Anything but the water they provided for drinking. As she thought about it she grabbed the bucket, placing it and some other equipment onto a nearby table and clambering onto the table herself. She called the elk to her and he obliged, standing besides the table. The extra height it gave her allowed to her reach the tips of his horns if she stood on her tiptoes. She used a scrap of fabric and dunked it into the warm water. The sensation was pleasant and Nemori enjoyed the feeling of warmth against her fingers. She let the fabric soak in the water for a few moments before bringing it out and squeezing the excess from it.
“Duck down for me, please” She requested of the elk and he obliged once more, ducking his head down slightly and allowing her easier access to his horns. Slowly she worked to scrub at each section of his horns, taking care not to miss sections. The elk was large with branching horns and occasionally she would have to relocate herself to reach some of the branches that extended from his horns. He behaved, only occasionally nearly knocking her from the table. It was difficult for him not to, nearly any large sway would have knocked her from the table and it was mostly through trust of the large creature that she felt comfortable being at such risk. Once or twice she had to resubmerge the cloth but the task was mostly simply and repetitive. Once she had finished her task she stepped backwards, admiring her work. Cleaning an elks horns was never an obvious task and she was aware it would not last long however she still felt pride at her work.

The Friendly Elk

Her feet found stone once more and she grabbed the bucket, moving it onto the floor. The action nearly caused the liquid to spill and she cursed herself internally for not being more careful.
“Now, are you going to continue to behave for me” She asked the elk with a smile. He whined in reply, she hoped that was a positive noise. The bucket was besides one of his hooves and she grabbed a small metal rod with a curve towards the end. “Behave” She reiterated, but this time the elk was ignoring her word. She disliked cleaning the hooves of any creature, aware of how much damage a kick from one would be. It was always easier to tend to the smaller creatures, they posed less potential risk. She used the metal rod to pick at the slush, dirt and straw from his flesh. The elk happily grazed on nearby straw, unfazed by the blunt implement rubbing gently between his toes. They was no pain caused by this method of cleaning, they was no reason for him to care. Despite this Nemori was thankful for how malleable trained elk were. Once that task was complete Nemori found a soft brittles brush and started to sweep at the feet, clearing away anything remaining from her previous attempts. After she had finished she inspected her work and then started to move towards the back hoof. The method was repeated once more. Occasionally she would glance up to ensure he was still occupied with something else. Although her positioning at his side was likely safe she could still feel her uncertainty eating into her. She next moved towards his front, stopping to pet and reassure him as she moved in front of his. On the other side she once more started with the front hoof before tackling the back.
When she had finally finished the hooves she leaned backwards, dropping the cloth on the floor. She admiring her work. The elk had gone back to ignoring her, pulling at the stray with his mouth she wondered if he would have been attacking the wooden beams if he had been closer. Eventually she stood up, not wanting to take too long of a break. The movement attracted the attention of the elk and he twisted around to nuzzle into her. Softly she petted him before grabbing a firm bristled brush.

The Friendly Elk

“Okay, what first? Neck or tail?” She questioned, smiling as she spoke. The elk nuzzled into her once more “Neck it is” She started to gently move some of his fur, exposing the undercoat. It was the undercoat she took the brush too, slowly working through the knots before folding the outer fur back over. She would switch to a softer brush in order to carefully straighten the overcoat. This procedure was repeated over and over and over again as she slowly worked through small tuffs of fur. Her time was passed by softly humming to herself, interspersed with small bouts of singing. Her voice was not accustomed to singing. “Guileless son, each day you grow older, each moment I’m watching…” her singing was cut off by a loud whine from the elk and she paused her grooming. “Sorry” She muttered, paying more attention to the knot of hair she was working on. “How’d you manage to get a knot this bad?” She playfully chastised him, the knot of hair was proving to be more difficult then she imagined. The elf whined in reply. “Yeah, yeah. I know. Playing in the fields you don’t notice such things” She mocked rolling her eyes and smirked to herself. An outsider would have found her behaviour strange, but she did not notice such things. It was just how she was used to interacting with animals, companions rather than pets. Eventually the knot she was working on dissolved and she once more started to work through the keeps of fur. “You know, if you moved to somewhere sunny you wouldn’t need so much fur?” She waved the brush towards the elks head and he ignored her, dragging pieces of hay from its holder. “Typical” She muttered, mostly to herself. Her work continued with the occasional rattle and snort of other creatures around her but otherwise was quiet. She started to hum to herself once more, it was a simple repetitive task that gave her lots of time to thing. It was also an important task. The elk’s and all the other creatures they looked after at the stables benefitted greatly from the regular grooming. It also encouraged bonding between the carers and those they looked after. The elk would occasionally shuffle or shake its coat and Nemori would have to pause her work, waiting on the fur to come to rest once more. Eventually her work was finished and she started to reorganise the equipment. The brushes were placed back into storage along with the metal rod. When she returned to fetch the bucket she found the elk drinking from it. She huffed, placing her hands on her hips as she stared at him. “Do you mind? I’m trying to clean up” The elk ignored her continuing to drink. She sighed, leaning herself against a wall. At least he is drinking, I do not have to worry about dehydration Once the elk had finished he whined at her, waving his head around before starting to wander away. It did not take her long to finish returning the equipment and she grabbed the candle, it was still burning with some time left. She used it to find her way outside and extinguished it. The candle was left on the table she had found it. Outside the stables it was dark. She wrapped her coat tighter around her, stepping through the snow. She could easily see the lights from her hold and she used them to guide her back home safely as she passed through the large field. A few elk and horses were still wandering around, closer to the stables now as the darkness gripped the edges of their land.

Notes :
Solid job thread, Nemori! I enjoyed your interaction with the elk. It definitely reminds me of a few of the horses I have dealt with in the past. So true about the water. I stuck your requested skill of fire building under wilderness survival, as it seems to be a task associated with outdoor survival. Please make sure to edit your request to 'graded' in the queue. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or concerns about your grade. Remember to submit this thread (along with your other job thread and Hold help thread) to the Wages thread at the end of the season, so you can receive your pay.
