He has hard, durable nails that he always keeps well groomed. He is well-muscled in his back, chest, and limbs, but that is all covered by a thin padding of fat.

Sloth Appearance
Length: 19”
Weight: 10 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Fur: Light Tan to Blond with Darker Legs and Arms- Greenish Tinge All Over
General Appearance: As a three-toed sloth, Solemn has three long claws on all four limbs. These limbs are very powerful, and he can hang upside-down from a tree almost indefinitely by hooking his claws into the bark. Falls from heights hurt him little. Being a three-toed sloth, he has nine vertebrae in his neck, rather than the usual seven, an attribute that allows him to twist his head to a much greater extent. His human form has kept this adaptation. A green moss grows lightly all over his body, giving his coloration a greenish hue that helps him blend into vegetation.

History

Lightfalter

Dasha Lightfalter was a mercenary who spent most of her time guarding traveling caravans to sate her desire to see the world. While she was good at exploring, she was a natural at her profession. In battle, Dasha’s weapons of choice were her shashka as a human and her powerful, biting jaws as a Kelvic wolf. Some said she was as fierce in her human form as she was in her Kelvic form and worth a dozen dire polar bears in a fight. These were, of course, exaggerations, but they had their origin in some truth.

Many had heard the story of Dasha Lightfalter’s travels north. On Dasha’s first and only journey to Taldera, the caravan she was protecting was pursued by a band of thieves. Hoping to escape the bandits and reach the nearby gates of Avanthal, Dasha pushed the travelers faster. When Dasha realized they could not outrun the enemy, she stopped the caravan and faced her enemy. She stripped completely, baring her skin to the harsh, northern cold in order to better utilize her Kelvic form.

Confusion set in among the thieves when they arrived and found the naked woman standing before them with her sheathed shashka in one hand. They approached, eyeing her body greedily. One, cockier than the rest, stepped up, reached an eager hand out to grab her, and said something unwise. He lost his hand to her quick drawing slash a moment before he lost his head.

Then, she charged into their midst, shashka whirling in a cyclonic pattern that seemed to wound even the air. Leaving her sword impaled through a man’s chest, Dasha changed. From the singular flash of light, a wolf leapt on the closest man, its jaws closing around his throat. The intoxicating, iron tang of blood filled her mouth, but she had no time to savor it. She changed again, drawing her sword from the dying man’s chest in time to parry a thrust from another. She fell into this vicious pattern: cutting down a few men with her sword, leaving the shashka in a corpse, changing, leaping, biting a limb or throat, changing back, and on and on, until she could change no more. Wisely, she made her final change to her Kelvic form; the wolf was strong and had an endurance matched by few. There were only three men left, but Dasha was too weary to fight them. She barely had the strength to move her legs, but she knew she had to draw the men away from the caravan to give the travelers time to make it to Avanthal.

She stumbled away, feigning a limp, and the act bought her the men’s pursuit. Dasha ran until even her wolf endurance failed her. She had changed too many times. Turning, she faced the men as they came for her. The exhaustion that flooded her body and her mind forced her to collapse. Still, Dasha smiled a wolfish grin and reveled in her victory as the men materialized out of the snow and fog, for she smelled what their human noses could not: two polar bears, undoubtedly from the fabled Ice Watch.

The thieves were about to run her through when the Ice Watch arrived. The first bear leapt in, trapping a man beneath each front paw and crushing them with a near ton of weight. The last man died of fright before the dire polar bear’s jaw crushed his throat as easily as taking a bite of an apple.

Nudging the still form of the wolf at his feet, the bear grunted when she did not respond. He changed into his human form, not wanting to hurt her with his massive, polar bear claws. Bending low, the man inspected the wolf and breathed a sigh of relief when he saw she was still breathing. It was a shallow, ragged breath, so the man turned her over to inspect her pelt for wounds. Though he found none, he knew she needed the attention of healers.

The second bear arrived with his rider, and the first bear quickly lifted the wolf up on top of the second bear’s back. Without a question, the second bear charged back to Avanthal, his rider holding the precious cargo firmly in place. The first bear returned to the caravan and escorted them the rest of the way to Avanthal.

When the story of Dasha’s courage was told, the finest healers and herbalists from Whitevine came to tend to her wounds. Morwen herself came and watched over the unconscious wolf several times. Through the tireless work and ingenuity of the medical experts and perhaps some providence or miracle, Dasha finally woke. Word continued to spread, and each of the travelers told the story differently. Some said that in the three minutes of fighting she had changed a dozen times. Some said twenty. It seemed that no one knew, except perhaps Dasha. What was known was that thirty-eight men lay dead in the snow by her blade and her teeth.

One of the travelers, a healer or herbalist from Whitevine who had sworn herself to a life of peace, had drawn the blade from the chest of the last man Dasha had killed and had cleaned it with snow and her own sleeves. She was waiting by Dasha’s side with the Kelvic’s shashka in her hands. Sorrow bit deep into Dasha’s soul when she realized she had forced someone of such a deep commitment to peace to witness such a brutality as her battle. But as the two talked, each found a fathomless beauty in the other’s peace or violence they had never before comprehended or embraced, and though neither intended to change, both were different from that moment on.

Birth

When Dasha had recovered, breeders from Frostfawn showed a keen interest in her. The story of her fight had swept across the city like the snow, and these men thought her ferocity would be an invaluable trait to introduce into the bloodlines. They were, however, frightened of the same qualities that made her so valuable and afraid of offending her by asking her to breed. They found the courage to ask one of the Ice Watch first if he would be willing to take part in the breeding experiment. He was the one who had saved her, and he agreed without hesitation.

Knowing they had a willing sire, they turned their attention back to Dasha. Doting on her and showering her with endless gifts, they tried to set up a perfect moment to ask her, but it never came. After several weeks of this behavior, she asked them what they wanted. They all stumbled nervously over their words and each other’s words, but Dasha pieced it all together. She smiled and consented to take part on the condition that they arranged a meeting with Morwen for her.

Within a week, she was in the Queen’s presence once again. Dasha had heard of Morwen’s ability to predict the Kelvic form of the crossing of two Kelvics. The young woman did not request to know what Kelvic form her child would take. She only asked if the breeding was wise. Morwen warned that the child would not be a dire polar bear, but she did not speak against the crossing of Dasha and the bear from the Ice Watch. Satisfied with the Queen’s vague blessing, Dasha mated, and two months later, a boy was born, bringing with him the new season. The Frostfawn breeders dubbed him Warborn, due to his warrior pedigree, but Dasha gave him no name, instead just referring to him as her cub.

While Dasha was just proud to be a mother, the bear and the breeders waited to see what form, if any, the cub would take. They didn’t have to wait long; his first change came when he was only four days old. Dasha laughed in joy at the baby sloth in her arms. The Frostfawn breeders were stunned and speechless, and his father was furious. The great Ice Watch warrior felt cheated that his offspring would turn out to be something as pathetic and unintimidating as a sloth. He disowned the child, and while Dasha secretly did not mind as she had never intended to let anyone else raise her cub, she defended the child. She yelled at the bear’s back as he stormed out of the house that her child would become greater than any Ice Watch bear.

That day, she left the house she had been given in the Ice Watch hold and went to the people whose culture she had fallen in love with most: the Snowsongs. If there was one thing she loved as much as traveling and her newborn child, it was song. Music lifted her spirits, and her singing voice was as beautiful as the many and varied songs she had learned in her travels.

Dasha raised her cub, teaching him everything she knew. One thing she made certain of was that he knew how to defend himself. She trained him to use a simplified, wooden shashka, slowly molding his technique toward her own. He was clumsy and did not learn quickly, but her cub was dedicated to learning. Singing was also taught, and though he did not have his mother’s natural singing voice, the cub found his own voice, a huskier, boyish version of his mother’s. There were many other lessons. Observing others while remaining unobserved was one, but Dasha was none too good at it. She was far too beautiful and intimidating to escape anyone’s attention, and though she could not teach him well, his unremarkable build and his slow movement made him better at it than she could ever be.

It was not only skills that she taught him but also lessons on history, myths, religion, and legends. She talked of many old heroes and of great battles, of the Gods and Goddesses, of their wars and the Valterrian. But her favorite story was, without a doubt, the story of Marcus and Myrna Kelvic. Dasha told of the siblings and their accomplishments, of Myrna’s final expedition, of her loss, of Marcus’ search, and of the creation of the Kelderon experiments with the desire to find Myrna. As soon as the cub heard the story, he felt something awaken in him, and at once, he knew that it was the desire to reunite the brother and sister. While his mother spoke of all Kelvic people as being created equal, the cub noticed she held a certain disdain for the dire polar bears of the Ice Watch, and he picked up a similar, lesser dislike for the powerful creatures.

There was only one thing the cub excelled at, and it was nothing his mother taught him. At two months of age, he was already looking like a young human child. He could scale any surface presented to him, using the change between his Kelvic and human form to overcome any obstacle the other form could not. Every time he climbed, her heart swelled with pride but also broke, because she could not follow him there. Worry also filled her soul each time he climbed, as she was unsure how sure-footed her cub was. Her worry was soon put to rest when one day the cub fell three stories only to get back up and begin climbing again. The fall had barely phased him, and when Dasha searched him that night for bruises, there were none.

Life went on happily this way for months, but as much as Dasha loved her cub, her heart began to miss the uninhibited freedom of the open road.

Hiberna

Dasha tried desperately to fit in and enjoy the city lifestyle, but everything began to remind her of how much she missed traveling. When the cub was seven months old, a traveling Benshira came into town, bringing with him news of the world outside Taldera and stories of the many places he had been. Before they even met, they were bonded. Somehow, the traveling spirit in each was evident to the other, and the power of the bond formed between them, building on this common thread and weaving a complex netting that pulled their hearts and souls together as pieces of themselves neither knew existed came to life.

On their first meeting, the Benshira man greeted her in his awkward, limited Vani, but she surprised him when she responded in flawless Shiber. The tents of the Benshira people had housed her many times, and out of respect to her constant hosts, she had dedicated herself to learning their tongue. She had even done her best to teach her cub, but he had picked up little as he was already trying to learn so much.

Dasha spent all of her waking hours with her Benshira bondmate, and the Benshira man came to care for her cub. As much as the Benshira man enjoyed Avanthal, he became restless. Soon, he asked the question Dasha feared to hear. He asked her to leave with him, so they could travel the world as they were meant to do. Without hesitation, he included the child, her cub, in the invitation, but Dasha knew the road was no place for the cub. He was clumsy and slow, and though Dasha would do anything to keep him safe, those were the two traits most likely to get him killed on the road. Though it broke her heart, she knew he had to stay and searched Snowsong hold for a family to take him in.

Within a week, Dasha found a small family with room to house him. They were a young couple with an eleven-year old daughter named Hiberna. When Dasha brought her cub to them, the cub understood that he had to be left and why and that he had to remain stoic to make their parting easier on his mother. Still when it was time to leave, Dasha hugged him and would not let him go. Feeling her begin to sob on his shoulder, the cub almost lost his iron countenance but instead managed to hold himself to crying silent, gentle tears. She held him for a full day before she finally let him go.

The Benshira man put his hands on the cub’s head and blessed the cub in Shiber. He closed the blessing by kissing the back of both hands and then stepped back. This Benshira man was the only father the cub had ever known, and the cub was sad to see him go. The blessing was simple. The cub understood the words but not their meaning. “May peace find you in whatever home you find.”

Dasha led her child into the waiting arms of Hiberna. Though she was only wearing a simple shirt and skirt, the girl’s embrace was warm, and the cub buried himself in it. The Vantha child asked for the cub’s name, and Dasha realized she had never given him one. She told Hiberna, and the girl took the cub’s face in her hands. She said what she saw in his eyes and in his face and made that his name. “Solemn.”

The Kelvic mother was proud of the name her cub had been given. It was strong and beautiful and would serve him well. Removing her shashka, she placed it in her cub’s hands. “Keep this safe for me. We will see each other again.”

Dasha embraced him one more time. Then she and her bondmate left, Dasha walking backward until she was out of sight so she could see her cub as long as possible. Once out of sight, she continued to walk backward until they lost sight of Avanthal, just in case the cub decided to follow them.

But he did not. He remained in Hiberna’s warm embrace, stoic until his mother and father were long gone. Then, the cub broke down, sobbing bitterly. He had just lost everything: his mother, his father, his whole family. He thought he was inconsolable. Then he felt her embrace warming in a way it hadn’t been doing so before, and a connection formed, one that emanated from deep within both of them and that neither could explain. It was a Kelvic bond like the one bondmates shared, and although it was not as strong as the adult Kelvic bonds, it was the most meaningful relationship either of them had known. Hiberna’s parents had agreed to take in the cub, thinking he would function as a pet for their daughter, but Hiberna refused to see him this way. The cub knew it when the bond formed and she hugged him tighter, whispering, “Hush now, Solemn, my brother. Don’t cry.”

In that moment, the cub realized he had gained as much as he had lost. He now had a name: Solemn, but even more important, he had a sister. He was not just Solemn; he was Solemn, Hiberna’s brother. The two thrived on the bond between them and hardly ever spent a moment apart. Solemn appeared to be only an eight-year old boy, and Hiberna comfortably fell into the role of his big sister.

The two children spent all of their time together, teaching each other what they knew. Solemn taught her to climb, and there wasn’t a vertical surface in all the holds of Avanthal they did not summit together. In turn, she gave him lessons in singing, and they practiced using the songs he had learned from his mother.

Occasionally, they would play with the other children, but Solemn was slow and often fell behind. At first, Hiberna was patient and waited for him, but her patience dwindled. Solemn learned quickly that Hiberna was a fierce child, prone to bouts of anger that came from nowhere. Whenever she was angry, her Vantha eyes turned the vicious red of some aurora lights, and they were red often.

One day, Solemn was being particularly slow, and his sloth-like pace made them fall behind right away. Hiberna did not pursue the others as she usually did. Instead, she just stared after them until she burst, rounding on Solemn, eyes burning red and her beautiful voice shouting ugly words. The torrent of words went on and on, and Solemn shrank under her rage, tears flowing down his cheeks. She did not stop until she ran out of breath, and Hiberna Snowsong could say a lot with a single lungful of air. When she finished, Solemn was speechless.

She spoke again, eyes still red. “I don’t ever want to see you again. Go away.”

The bond between them snapped in a moment, and Solemn had never experienced such an agony. It was a rush of a hundred feelings: pain, nausea, emptiness, suffocation, confusion, loneliness, sorrow, fear, burning, dread…. Solemn stumbled away, unsure of what to do. She was all he had left. Alone, Solemn wandered aimlessly the rest of the day and into the night. With no place to go, he walked until the cold made it impossible to move anymore. His body was not built to withstand the cold, and finally he collapsed. His consciousness started to fade, and he began to hallucinate someone was calling his name in a dozen voices: Dasha’s, Hiberna’s, the Benshira man’s, and more. And then, he felt the warmth of her embrace and knew he wasn’t imagining it. Hiberna rained his head and face with kisses as the heat of her own body warmed his.

“I’ve been searching everywhere for you. I can’t lose you. Don’t ever leave me again.”

The bond between them reformed, stronger than before, and with it, came a dozen new ones. He knew it was the same one, because he had become so familiar with it over the short time it had existed.

She held him through the rest of the night, and as he slowly warmed, he became aware of the dozen or more people standing about, people she had no doubt recruited to help search for him. There was also a polar bear of the Ice Watch. Though he was smaller than some, his mass was formidable, and he sat close behind Hiberna, sheltering the two children from the icy wind a night storm had kicked up. They fell asleep in each other’s arms, and Solemn recalled the sensation of being carried home but could not tell if it was a dream or reality.

The two became inseparable once more. This went on for some time, but eventually, Hiberna’s rage got the better of her, causing her to send him away again. This breaking and reforming of the bond occurred many times in the fifteen months they spent together, every time the bond reforming stronger than before. Solemn became so accustomed to being sent away and her returning for him that he no longer feared being alone, because he knew she would return for him.

There came a day though when Hiberna’s rage changed. Solemn was growing more quickly than she was, as many animal species did, and she was angry that she was no longer the big sibling and afraid that her world was changing and there was nothing she could do to stop it. When she sent him away, her eyes flashed not only red but yellow as well. Yellow was the color they turned when she was frightened. Solemn had thought nothing of it and wandered away, waiting at his usual spot in the city for her to come for him.

At the end of the third day, she still had not come.

Early Adulthood

Solemn was confused when Hiberna’s parents showed up the next morning, but it only lasted for a moment before realization sank in. Hiberna had not been the one to come for him. Although the bond had already been broken the day before, it had not been complete until that moment. Never before had the breaking been so harsh, and the agony was so pure and undiluted that Solemn lost consciousness.

When he came to, Hiberna’s parents were still there along with a family from Frostfawn. He was being given away again. Hiberna was so upset by how quickly Solemn was growing that she was sending him away for good. While he had waited, her parents had searched for a home for him. Several of the breeders who had known his mother heard of his situation, and feeling responsible for Solemn’s birth they felt they had a duty to him and found a family he could stay with and who would apprentice him in their line of work: sled dog breeding and training. He was not a part of the family he now lived with, though they did not shun his company. It was understood by he and they that he was merely a hired hand, and he fit the role well.

Solemn thrived in Frostfawn hold. With his Kelvic understanding, he had a natural affinity for the animals, especially with the sled dogs that held such a similar spirit to his own mother’s Kelvic form. Though he thrived, Solemn began to fit his namesake better and better with each passing day. He had to. He had to in order to survive. He thought the pain of the final bond breaking would pass, but it had not. It stayed as both a hollow, emotional pain and a piercing, physical one. The dogs became the closest thing he had to family.

Solemn kept a somber face to hold out the world as he did his best to block out his pain. Still, there were memories that gave him hope.

Concept

May peace find you in whatever home you find.

The Shiber blessing has stuck with Solemn ever since it was given. Perhaps it was that he had no home or that every home he ever had was taken from him, but the blessing became something like a home to him. The blessing was a home, but even more so, peace was home. Peace made him comfortable, made him feel as if he belonged, and he did everything in his power to keep peace wherever he was. That’s not to say that he never let his rage get the best of him or that he never got into fights. There were some things his sister had taught him well.
Hush now, Solemn, my brother. Don’t cry.… I’ve been searching everywhere for you.

Solemn’s time with Hiberna taught him the strength of the bond between siblings. After the final breaking, he understood what it was like to no longer have that bond, that incomparable connection. His desire to reunite Myrna and Marcus Kelvic reignited, because he understood their pain. He understood what it was like to be apart from the person he cared most about, and it broke his heart that anyone else had to feel this way. It was one of his greatest goals in life to see the siblings together again, even if it was by actions of his own, and even though he did not believe in the divinity of the Gods and Goddesses, he prayed to Morwen every day for Myrna’s safe return. This may have been his greatest goal, but there was one underlying passion that kept him breathing day after day, kept him fighting the pain. That was the urge to reconnect with Hiberna and to have his family complete once more.
Keep this safe for me. We will see each other again.

Solemn’s single, most powerful drive in life is to reunite with his family. This, of course, includes his sister, Hiberna, but also includes his mother Dasha, and her bondmate, the Benshira traveler. All have been significant in his life, no matter how short of a time they may have actually been with him. He has dedicated himself to the things that they loved. At the request of his mother, he trains with his shashka daily, in order to keep both it and himself safe. He also practices singing each day as well, attempting to reach a comfort with his voice that would satisfy both Hiberna and his mother.
If only it was worth the effort.

Having the instincts of a sloth has made Solemn a seemingly lazy individual. He likes to do work with the least amount of effort as possible. Although he has many great dreams and desires, this difficulty with anything that requires effort often overpowers these desires.

Gender: Female

Birthplace: Avanthal, Taldera
Height: 5’1”
Weight: 110 lbs.

General Appearance: Hiberna has always been small for her age, but as she has matured, she has begun catching up with other girls her age. She is still skinny but in a strong sort of way, lithe.
Concept: Due to always being picked on because of her small size, Hiberna became a very fierce girl, prone to sudden, quick bursts of anger. She always makes rash decisions in these moments and often has to fix the situations she creates. Her greatest loves in the world stem from her surname. The icy, white cold of the north feels as necessary as the air that fills her lungs so she can sing. She wants nothing more than for everything to stay the way she has always known, but things have changed and, in doing so, have forced her to change. As she has matured, her eyes are less often the red that she so often demonstrated in her younger years, though she tends to be just as fierce. She is working on bringing Solemn back into her life, and the two siblings are trying to recreate the bond that once connected them.
