Marcus Collers

Appearance

Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Birthday: 23rd Day of Summer, 497 AD
Birthplace: Ravok

Appearance:

Marcus is what many would consider an attractive man, though by no means an Adonis. He has a pale-olive complexion, befitting a man in the northern neck of Mizahar, that contrasts with his black hair which is currently kept long and tied back into a ponytail so as not to obstruct his vision. He has very sharp, hawk-like features that possess more feminine than masculine qualities; this is not the face of a lumberjack or a blacksmith. His eyes are a striking shade of blue—his father used to joke that his mother had been a Svefra woman who has accidentally mistaken Lake Ravok for the Suvan Sea—and are ever observing the world around them. His nose is thin, elongated, and his lips thin and pale. His cheeks appear as if they have been stretched across his face, though they cannot be described as gaunt either. His chin is pointed and, when Marcus smiles, reveals a dimple in the center. Marcus is currently clean-shaven save for a wisp of a mustache that he asserts make him look more “professional” but is better described as the style of a pubescent teenager.

Because of the abundance of food in Ravok, Marcus grew to height of six foot one and weighs in at just under one-hundred and seventy pounds. He is by no means muscular, though, but instead more of a bean pole. Marcus was never one to spend much time out in the sun save for transit around the city and to the lakeshore, so torso and appendages are just as pale as his face. His hands, though, are marred by callouses and scars from shooting his hunting excursions with his father. Marcus has never known hard labor but neither does his hands give away his passive lifestyle.

Marcus’ sense of fashion is in-line what that of the rest of the city. Rhysol’s influence on the weather has meant Marcus often wears light clothing; only in the winter will Marcus be found in long-sleeves or wearing gloves and scarves. He prefers dark colors over light because he’s never been one who wished to stand out in a crowd. This sense of style rarely deviates throughout the year. The only exception comes when he witnesses a member of the Ravokian families attempting a new style. Marcus has been known to mimic the fashion choices of these individuals in possible, but this may just be a habit of youth. Needless to say, Marcus is a follower, not a leader, when it comes to Ravokian fashion.

Character Concept

Marcus is above all else a man of ambition. He developed this trait early on in life after witnessing day in and day out the extant of the wealth others had in Ravok. While he appreciated what his father and aunt did for him, he could not envision a life where he was subject to the same normalcy. He wished to be a name in Ravok and even abroad. Out of this comes a extreme focus in regards to these goals. Marcus is an avid learner and hard workers in areas that he believes will one day make him money. That isn’t to say he is a one-trick pony, though until Marcus considers him established in the business world, his pursuit of hobbies and other activities will never be a primary focus. This includes relationships. At this state of his life, he’s less interested in meaningful relationships and more interested in potential business partners and investors.

With this in mind, Marcus is also someone willing to get hands on with his work. Serving mostly as a clerk the last two years, Marcus has developed this mentality of support when it comes to work. Should he find himself serving as a clerk aboard a ship, he is not above assisting the sailors in their tasks without his employer necessarily asking him to do so. This mindset is ultimately self-serving; Marcus uses such opportunities to be learn from those he is helping and also to impress his employer, which may aid him down the road. Still, Marcus is not one to shy away from aiding another if it proves lucrative enough to him.

Marcus is also a sheltered soul, both in terms of outside culture and the vices of man. He has never left the city of Ravok, save for his trips to the lakeshore, and his interaction with foreigners has been limited thus far in his life. This means the difference between him becoming xenophobic or culturally accepting will be on his first few experiences with the rest of the world. He is aware, though, of the Ravokian view on various other peoples and thus will not enter the world abroad completely devoid of secondary opinion. As to vices, Marcus has yet to fully delve into gambling, adultery, or inebriation and is in a position to be highly influenced by these once he does experience them. He is, in many cases, a blank canvas waiting for some fluid, bodily or otherwise, to be spilled upon it.

Character History

Out of humble beginnings Marcus Collers was born, the son of a hunter and a mother who died during childbirth. Because of his father’s frequent and prolonged trips to the shores of Lake Ravok in search of game, Marcus grew up in the home of his mother’s sister, Aunt Lystia, a seamstress who worked out of her home. Because of this, Marcus had a very urban upbringing and quickly developed a taste for the grandeur and wealth that Ravok possessed. He still appreciated what his father did—in fact, someone of his fondest memories from adolescence was hunting the deer herds in the wilderness—but ultimately Marcus developed ambition far what a life as a simple hunter could provide.

Marcus devoted himself to the education the Institute for Higher Learning provided the Ravokian youth, looking to go beyond the basic reading and writing he was taught. He delved into mathematics and quickly discovered that he enjoyed the way that they came together in real life to form the back-bone of business in Ravok. Mercantile, especially Maritime, fascinated him; it makes sense, given the proximity of water in his everyday life. He aspired to one day have his name up there beside the wealthiest in Ravok, achieved by his own prowess in trade and business.

Still, though, Marcus is young and has only stepped into the world of business. Unfazed by the tedium of bookkeeping and ledger balancing, Marcus did not struggle in finding clerical work shortly after his seventeenth birthday. In the two years since then, he has bounced around the city, assisting visiting and established merchants in their day-to-day operations. He’s still looking for that big break, either in Ravok or abroad, that will allow himself to start conducting real business. Nineteen and very green, Marcus is looking for most of all, a chance to learn the way of business.
