Erick Barnett

Physical Appearance:
At any age, Erick had been an imposing figure among his peers. Broad and towering, he was built sturdier than an oak, a trait he had inherited from his father. His hair fell over his ears in long gossamer tufts, an almost golden shade of bright blonde, draping across his forehead in layers and in wispy, fair streaks. He had bright, aquamarine eyes, and he carefully brushed his hair in such a way as to never let it obscure his vision. His jaw and cheekbones were very pronounced; the lines that made his face were sharp and strong, lending a rough, almost wood-carved look to his features.

Erick's fashion sense starts and stops at what is functional. Mostly black, as Erick's never enjoyed standing out in crowds. Simple garments of cloth and string, frequently caked with mud and dirt. The man himself was generally clean and well groomed, or as clean and well groomed as any citizen of Syliras could be asked to be. As needed by the Order he dons the armor of a knight but does not actually own any armor himself. He does own his bow, his blade, and is seldom seen without both, but never seen without his sword.

Personality:
The knight-aspirant is of a taciturn sort, especially around those who are not members of the knighthood. His reserved nature is not born of an inherent dislike for people, but out of a deep-seated mistrust he developed for most people during his upbringing in Ravok - an attitude with roots imbedded deeply into the core of his being. That being said he is not antisocial, but prefers to let his actions speak for him wherever possible. He is not fond of idle chit-chat, and has poorly developed social skills, very likely as a result of seldom being allowed to interact with children his age during his childhood.

Many who have met Erick since his arrival in Syliras have been exasperated by his stubbornness. The lengths he is willing to go in pursuit of something are quite extraordinary. While this could be appropriately described as tenacity, it isn't without a hint of madness. It is very easy for Erick to become swept up in his passions and become completely fixated on something, obsessing over it until finding some kind of resolution. This is a pattern of behavior that was instilled in him by his doting parents, his father in particular, and it's a trait that has built much of who Erick is, and is the platform upon which he continues to build himself up. He doesn't always know what the right thing to do is, but he's never comfortable sitting around on something for long, and once he's set his mind to something, he never will relinquish hope of seeing it completed.

Erick draws much of his resolve from the example the Syliran Knights have set for him, and particularly for the ideals they embody, the tenets of Sylir. Even greater resolve he draws from the rage that still boils in his chest at the family that was ripped away from him so very many years ago. Being a man of principle, who genuinely believes in the work the Order is doing in Syliras, he always has done his best to temper his natural aggression, trying to find productive outlets for it in his training and work. Despite this, Erick has constantly been a little uncomfortable with how comfortable he is dealing out pain, taking the lives of others, even if it was necessary. As such, he prays to Yahal and Priskill each night before he slumbers; To Yahal, he asks for the strength to continue to defy the influences of the world that would otherwise corrupt and debase his soul. To Priskill, he asks only for the hope needed to continue wanting to be above the corruptions of the world.

History:
There had been a time, in the earliest days of Erick's childhood, that he would have thought of his own life as entirely ordinary - perhaps all too ordinary. The true nature of the city he had been born to escaped him when he was still in the innocent years of his boyhood, and he was happy. Born to Lysander and Terra Barnett, he spent his most his early being tutored by his mother in the basics of reading, writing, and math. His dad often was gone for days at a time, vanishing seemingly at random only to appear just as mysteriously again a few days later. He was never a slow child, and was aware on some level of what his father's work entailed, both from the constant hours he put into his weapon training while at home, to the wounds and blood he sometimes carried on his person when returning. Whenever he asked about it, as any child would, he was always told simply not to worry about it.

Although many children in Ravok were inundated into religion very early, Erick grew up knowing no gods. His parents seemed apt to teach him about the different deities, and the legends and myths surrounding each - but not only did they not seem to show reverence for any particular deity, even as a child Erick could see the disdain they had for the very concept of worship - disdain they went to great lengths to hide from everyone, including their son, but Erick knew his parents better than they thought he did. Although they did not seem interested in sparking Erick's interest in the gods, they pushed him in other areas. Erick's mother taught him his numbers and letters, while his father began to teach him how to fight - with or without a sword - very soon after he had started walking.

So went the first decade of the boys life, and he grew up healthy and strong. He sometimes wished his parents weren't so overprotective, as the city around him remained mostly off limits, but he wasn't foolish enough not to fathom the danger of a place like Ravok. He heard things whispered about his family when others thought he was out of earshot, conversations would often suddenly cease when the boy or his parents entered rooms. And although, like many other things, his parents always told him that he was too young to worry, but he worried anyways, and even as a child, he often seemed stern and distant - particularly if his parents weren't around. So life had always went for him, training and studying during the day and spending the night laying awake in bed, jumping at every distant scrape or groan.

This life came to an abrupt end in the winter of 505 AV. Erick had been slowly growing more and more aware as he grew up of the corruption that lived in Ravok, like a foul stench clinging to it's every wall and permeating the very air of the city. He had learned well enough from growing up there that the best defense he had against it was ignorance, whether feigned or genuine, and so in the great tradition of any honest citizen of Ravok he kept his head down, and steered clear of any trouble. His father, however, hadn't been heeding the same advice, despite having spent years dispensing it to his son, and late in the night they came for him. Agents of The Black Sun, who stormed his family home and, while he hid nearby, proceeded to torture and kill both his mother and father.

Vindictive as the folowers of Rhysol were, Erick had no choice but to flee the city he had been born in. Taking his father's sword (which had been used to unceremoniously execute his mother and father both,) he managed to sneak out of the city thanks to a friend of his fathers who made a living as a ferryman. Unsurprisingly, as a child who had never set foot outside the city, the wilds were as brutal as they were unforgiving, and within a week Erick was already close to death - until he was happened upon by Slavers traveling out of Ravok.

However, Erick didn't spend long a captive. After two weeks of enduring the torments of the slavers, their camp was raided by a company of Syliran Knights. Nearly all of the vagabonds were put to the sword, and before taking him back to Stormhold Castle, he was able to recover the only thing he had left of his old life - his fathers cherished longsword.

Alone, and very frightened of the entire world, the young Erick latched onto several members of the knighthood for support and guidance. In particular, his patron, the very same Knight who he had first met when he was rescued from the slaver, became something of a surrogate mother to the orphaned boy . He spent his first two years as a Page, and over time began to develop a reputation for his persistence, and for being a quick study. He became a Squire when he turned thirteen, and eagerly works towards becoming a full-fledged member of the Order - determined to make good on the debt he owes to the knights for saving his life, and on a promise he made to his parents many years ago.
