Second of spring 517Av

The tropical lands had been unique, Hwyn might have even said nice if they hadn’t been hell on his cosmetics, it was funny to think that a city on a lake was less humid. But then again he’d been warned jungles were like that. None the less it was incredibly refreshing not to be damp for once. When they made it back to the estate Hwyn had joyously looked over the gaudy halls and the pompous airs of Eva’s siblings and had sighed in relief happy to be home.

Theye’d returned the day before making it home on the first, it’d been an interesting day Hwyn counted at least three of Eva’s Siblings looking particularly hung over, but justly enough the entire city was in a rough state of quiet recuperation even the maids who were generally terse as ever seemed to move in a stupor. It was decidedly a shame to have missed the festivities but the elation of returning home was sweet enough that He didn’t mind all that much. However knowing his mistress the fact that she’d missed out on one of the few times of the year when her drinking habits would pass off as “normal” Hwyn snickered at the word, might bum her out. Though there had been a time when he’d sought to perhaps curb her habits he’d accepted them as part of her nature. So this once he decided to indulge her more than usual, a, welcome home party for her of sorts.

As always he’d woken early just before the sun. Instead of moving immediately to Eva’s room to spend at least a half hour of trying to gently waking her he had other plans. Washing his face and hair in the woefully cold water provided to servants Hwyn combed his blond locks that no reached his mid back tell they shone and were free of tangles, his hair hadn’t been cut during their trip and it was beginning to reach a length to rival Eva’s. Then with an amused grin he pulled from his luggage a pair of undergarments Eva had once told him she liked donned them. Next came the maid uniform he hadn’t worn since he’d left the estate since it hadn’t been passable to wear in the jungle. Twirling once in front of the small mirror Hwyn took a moment to indulge his own vanity before heading off to get the other things he wanted. First the whine “cellar” Hwyn procured a bottle of older grape whine and took a moment to note that they were decidedly of shorter stock than they had been before. It was now certain that they had been more than liberal with their celebratory libations in the household. However, the thought of Eva’s father drinking or celebrating for that matter was beyond him.

Though Hwyn was trying to be nice, he still hated the idea of starting the Morning with wine, perhaps a chaser to breakfast but if it was in his power he was going to make that woman eat breakfast first. Thus it was off to the kitchen. Something easy on the stomach but still flavorful, Eva’s appetite had never been particularly fantastic to begin with but it had picked up during the vacation. In the early morning within the estate, even as the Nitrozean’s slept Hwyn was one of several of the staff awake. Luckily this included the resident chef who was laboring away at making bread. Now, it would be easy enough to procure a loaf by informing the cook of his intentions but some habits die-hard. However, before doing anything sneaky he did want to snag a small jar of preserves for the bread. Looking to the pantry Hwyn passed over several jars looking for the one that most appealed to him. It occurred to him that he didn’t actually know what Fruits Evarista liked, but going with his gut he chose the jar of cooked down apple preserves.

Now, for the bread. Tucking the wine and Jam under an arm hwyn looked about and cast his eyes on a broom, a slight smile curving across his lips. Leaving the pantry with the broom in his free hand he propped it against the door that was going to slowly edge closed. Now having made the embarrassing mistake of dropping a broom before he was well aware of the crack it would make when it struck the floor. The trick was now in timing. Letting the broom lean against the door he let go of it lightly for a moment seeing how quickly it was going to fall. Content that he was fast enough he adjusted the broom and door once before walking away and letting go.

One second, He was halfway across the kitchen,
Two seconds, Nearly at the loaves of fresh bread.
Three seconds, Crack! The chef’s head jerked up as he looked at the source of the noise.
Four seconds, with bread in hand Hwyn was halfway out of the question.
Five seconds, He was gone with bread in one hand and wine and jam in the other.

Lastly came presentation, and tea, getting a tray from the dining room Hwyn arranged the small breakfast like he had seen Byrony do many times before. For some reason he felt like she would have done it better, like she had some trick to make even mundane things look neat. Lastly the tea. This part actually made Hwyn frown, he realized he’d have to return to the kitchen. He needed hot water. He also felt like he was in hot water, hopefully the chef was too involved with everything to have even noticed anything was awry.

Stepping into the chefs quarters tentatively Hwyn decided to play it safe and talk to the chef as if he had a guilt free conscience.

“Ser, do you have any water on the boil?”
Thankfully the chef seemed as out of it as the rest of the house and hardly looked him over before nodding to the rather obvious pots of whistling water above a fire. Nodding in thanks as the red of embarrassment tinged his cheeks Hwyn snagged the last element of his good morning and made his way to his master’s room.

Making it to Eva’s room Hwyn was thankful for the silence of the morning as he gripped the tray on his way of the flights of stairs, which was another thing Byrony had always made look easy, the comfortable grace of balance; he would have to ask her her secrets on the matter someday.

Never the less without incident Hwyn made it to Evarista’s room slipping in quietly. Setting the tray on her desk Hwyn began to steep the tea leaves letting the aroma of tea and hot bread waft through the room. Deciding against rousing Eva for the moment Hwyn walked over the the window pulling back the curtains to gazoe over the brilliantly hued city colored by the first pink rays of the sun.

Home Semi-sweet home

Postby Evarista on March 2nd, 2017, 1:54 pm

Evarista was not as happy to return home as she thought she would be. Her father was very correct in that a change of environment would help 'take her mind off things'. The foreign sights and smells, as well as the unfamiliar people in Syka, had all absorbed her fairly well. She had fallen into a new rhythm, finding some comfort in Hwyn's familiar face meanwhile. As much as she always thought about wanting to run away from everything she knew, it seems that she was still too weak to abandon all familiar things at once. It was a fairly tough season, but all things considered, it could definitely be called a vacation.

But now she was back. Already while disembarking the ferry at the docks and laying eyes on her native city, all the memories came rushing back in full force. It felt as though she never left, and the surreal horrors of autumn felt like they happened only yesterday. Tired beyond words from the travel, she made it straight home and collapsed into bed immediately. The luxury featherbed felt unspeakably soft after a season spent in a bungalow, and she felt asleep immediately. But the world of dreams would not be a refuge.

Evarista was thrown back into scenery of the autumn marketplace. She couldn't remember why she came there, and that wasn't important. Images from a strange perspective. Hwyn's face in black and white. Hwyn's aura, not only the sight of it, but also the smell and taste, and the vibration. Then came the other vibrations, and many blurry images, but no more faces. Faces didn't matter. Only the grinding of teeth, the metallic taste of blood and the treble of agonized voices. She knew she was dreaming, but she could no longer tell what part of it was a memory of the past and what part of it was a fantasy of the future.

The delirium came to an end when a ray of light suddenly struck her face. Waking up with a start, Evarista reflexively sat up in her bed, breathing heavily. She was completely drenched in sweat and didn't feel rested at all, but going back to sleep wasn't an option. Cracking her sore neck loudly, she turned her head towards the source of the disturbance. Someone had opened the curtains. The short and blurry figure next to the window must have been Hwyn. She was familiar enough with his silhouette to recognize it without trying, but was unsurprisingly not able to do this with her own family members, despite having lived with them for twenty years.

Wiping the sweat from her brow, Evarista swung her feet down to the floor and stared straight ahead dazedly for a moment. The aroma of tea and fresh bread finally registered in her brain, instantly making her mouth fill with saliva. Since she usually woke up and ate breakfast much later than everyone else, hot bread straight from the oven was rarely something she got her hands on. But today, it came straight to her room. Maybe waking up on time did have some advantages, but on the other hand, Bryony wouldn't be bringing water to this room until much later. Some cold water to wash her clammy face with would sit well right then, but you can't have everything.

Evarista shuffled slowly to the window and opened it, letting in a chilly gust that made her hair billow. Even though the wind was not actually cold, it felt so, after a season in the tropics. Shuddering in her moist pajamas, she approached the desk and flopped down on the armchair, inspecting the carefully prepared breakfast with a critical eye. Hwyn was learning the trade of a maid fairly fast. The tea has not done brewing yet, but she could start with the wine instead. It was a light and off-dry sort. The girl wasn't sure if he picked the best breakfast wine by accident, or if he was slowly becoming an alcohol expert by being around her, but she was happy either way.

Uncorking the wine with some effort, she poured some into her glass that had dutifully waited for her on the desk. She hasn't actually had any wine during winter at all, and the sugarcane spirits available in the tropics couldn't compare. Seeing the fruity liquid sparkle in the morning sun lifted her mood immediately. Oh, how she missed this.

Without saying good morning, or anything else for that matter, Evarista gave Hwyn a small glance and pointed at the violin that sat alone on the bookcase. There was no possibility to bring it to Syka, so it spent the winter here, gathering a thin layer of dust. Well, no more. The old scene of seeing him play while they were alone in the main dining hall flashed in her mind. It was a part of 'home'. She wanted it to be, in any case.

Hwyn smiled wryly at his master’s behavior it was very much her. Though he should’ve hidden the wine for later he decided she was already off on the bottle and it would be too late to stop her now. At her gesture Hwyn retrieved his violin giving her a more legitimate smile.
“Good morning to you as well Miss”

From their he softly drew the bow across the notes finding his threads and fingers and sounds relishing in the familiar weight of the violin. If he was disappointed in Eva’s lack of praise or any words at all he didn’t show it rationalizing it to her obvious fatigue and otherwise disheveled countenance. He’d tend to that in time as well.

“Ah, and Happy new year Miss.”

With that He drew the bow across the chords in earnest drawing out a tune that rose with the sun Minor chords fleshing to majors, single notes merging to harmonies, it was easier than playing a folk song and it felt… like it fit the theme of the morning, a Hymm to praise the rising sun. A greeting to spring and the verdant plants it would bring. It was not perhaps his best; he attributed it to his lack of practice. His fingers had lost their callouses as well and quickly became sore. Ignoring the discomfort he finished the song letting the final note fall away into nothingness before placing the violin back in it’s resting place.
Returning to Eva’s side Hwyn produced her comb and without skipping a beat began the process detangling and combing Eva’s long black hair. It was more frazzled than usual on this morning further proving that she was perhaps worse off than usual on this particular morning. Talking to her without really expecting much interest from her but filling the silence Hwyn informed her on the status of the household.

“It looks like your siblings took to celebrating the new year with more zest hand I’ve seen anywhere else. The whole household is in a stupor, even the maids seemed hungover. I believe that when I walked past the garden I saw an entire set of underwear hanging from a bush. Though beyond that the house reeks of wine. Hrmm I guess the only good thing this morning was that it was the most quiet I’ve ever seen this house. I only ran into the chef and one other maid.”

Letting his voice fall silent as the last few tangles were gently unknotted from Eva’s silky hair Hwyn grinned at his handiwork. He didn’t want to further intrude on her meal so he distanced himself from her for a moment meandering about the room tidying up as he went. Straightening her ruffled sheets and pillows removing the thin layer of dust that had been acquired. The silence of Eva’s room was nice if not always comfortable but he’d grown used to her long gaps of contemplation. Picking up her book off the shelf Hwyn looked over the pages covered in scripts and artful runes that he couldn’t read. Though he did no one letter, the semblance of which was seared over his heart, The E. putting it back Hwyn smiled ruefully remembering for a moment he and his masters sordid history, it was easier to just not think about it. In most ways his life was easier since they’d met and he kept himself busy enough that he rarely bemoaned his form of “employment”.

“Miss Eva is their anything I can do for you this morning, I can’t help but notice that you…” Hwyn paused every now and then he lost his pleasant tone for lack of a vocabulary befitting the wealthy.
“You look really worn down this morning, so, Uhm, If I can do anything for you do ask okay?”

He hoped he didn’t overstep anything, speaking politely was something he generally tried to do but sometimes it was difficult to sidestep the honest truth of a situation.

Postby Evarista on March 5th, 2017, 8:14 pm

Lifting the glass to her lips, Evarista took a slow sip, rolling the wine around the roof of her mouth indulgently while Hwyn prepared his instrument. But her desire to savor was quickly surpassed by impatience, whereupon she sharply tipped the glass all the way. The wine rushed down her throat, with just as much running down her chin and soaking her collar, making her shudder in a sort of perverted pleasure no adequate person could ever feel.

The vibration of Hwyn's voice had the same effect. The way it caressed her eardrums was not a way an adequate person reacted to voices. Maybe she was still half asleep, still halfway in that dream. Maybe she was slowly changing in reality. It didn't much matter to her. Actually, not being sure of the boundary between dream and reality was yet another thing she enjoyed, and yet another thing no adequate person would identify with.

Her clammy hand reached for the apple jar. After several unsuccessful attempts to twist the lid off, the realized that the lid was made to be pulled. How embarrassing. Smirking to herself, she began prying the piece of leather off of the jar, and predictably enough, the contents came welling over her hands, covering them in sticky syrup. Maybe there was a limit to how ham-handed a person could be, but Evarista didn't respect that limit. Unflinching, she licked the apple jam off of her hand and then shoved her fingers back into the jar absent-mindedly, scooping out the sweet contents and shoving them straight into her mouth, reminding of something in-between a hungry toddler and a bear ravaging a beehive.

Having thoroughly, if unintentionally, smeared the am all over her face, she picked up the hot bread and shoved a corner into her mouth, starting to chew on the corner without even bothering to bite it off properly. Yep, just the average breakfast of an average day. New year? The only thing holidays meant to her was that she had an excuse to drink more than usual, and people were generally less on their guard and thus easier to spy on. She hadn't indulged in her nightly spying habits in a while, but the drinking opportunity had to be seized either way. She poured herself another glass with her free hand, leaving a syrupy handprint on the bottle. Just like the first, it rapidly disappeared down her throat, without any pretense of manners or moderation.

Pausing her battle against the food, she leaned back in her chair and turned towards Hwyn, who was already in full swing of his morning performance. Tilting her head towards him, she followed his movements with half-closed eyes, noting the fine powder of dust falling from his violin as he gradually brought it back to life from a season's worth of rest. Her eyes wandered to his face, and then to his golden locks. She realized how much his hair has grown since they first met. His cheeks seemed a bit more rosy, too, and his movements more relaxed than they've been back then. She recalled when she first laid eyes on him at the café. The tense vibe of a foreign street urchin was fairly unmistakable then, but it was all but gone now. He has changed. She never noticed such things about anyone, but she noticed it about him.

While the attentive boy worked on her hair, Evarista sipped her well-brewed tea and listened to his voice behind her. There was surprisingly little difference between listening to him speak, and listening to him play the violin. He wasn't a singer, of course, but that wasn't the point. He no longer stuttered as badly as he once did, and that uncanny vibrating sensation reached deeply into her mind. Maybe she had accidentally morphed her ears without noticing? It didn't feel like it. This was something else. Something coming from a corner of her psyche that she didn't really want to disturb.

His offer to entertain her further was a welcome distraction, and she did enjoy how openly he worded it. Anything he could do for her... anything at all?

Turning around halfway and unceremoniously wiping her hands and face on his apron, she opened the desk drawer and fished out something shiny, taking a moment to inspect it. It was the magnifying glass she had bought in autumn. She still hadn't tried it properly on anything. Although she largely bought it on a whim, having fallen victim to the strange merchants' salesmanship, such a rare and expensive object had to be good for something. She had originally thought about using it to examine Archibald more closely, but the idea that struck her just now was even better. She shifted her gaze from the sparkling glass to Hwyn's face, making eye contact. Her eyes narrowed; not menacingly, not mischievously, but simply with determined intent.

"Hmm... Stand on your knees and look. Look at me..."

Taking him by the shoulder, she gently pushed him downwards, so that her eye level was slightly above his while she leaned far forward in the armchair, hovering over him closely. Their noses almost touched, but there was still room for something between them. Evarista always had thoughts of his strange eyes swirling at the back of her mind, but today was different. Today, she couldn't get them out of her head since she woke up. During that blurry and monochrome scene, where everything and everyone, sky and earth, were nothing but black and white smudges, only these eyes stood out in brilliant radiance. As familiar as she was with the anatomy of a particular eight-legged creature, she knew very well that her eyes at that time could not distinguish colors.

Except the colors of his eyes. It was impossible, but it happened. And she had to know why. The magnifying glass slid between their faces, warping perception and making the soft tissues appear to bulge violently in front of her. He, presumably, would see her in the same way from his side, but that was immaterial. She had no idea what she hoped to find. The ethereal corona around his irises jumped out at her, taunting her with its unnatural sheen. Was Hwyn human? She has never cast that into doubt. No, not even now. He was extremely human. More human than herself. That couldn't be questioned. But this, this...

Swallowing hard, Evarista began to focus on the aura. Not on Hwyn's aura, but only on that of his eyes. She already knew that every part of a thing had its own aura, its own history and library of information. So, fortunately for Hwyn, she didn't have to remove the eyes to examine them.

What did she see?

Home Semi-sweet home

There is a comfort in normalcy, a relaxing aspect to a routine, but is occasionally hard to set a baseline for normalcy, and as Hwyn was bound to Eva’s ever-evolving will, Routine too was oft set to change and bend as was his master’s desire. Though, in it’s own way her oddities kept things fun, if not odd. It was hard not to notice how immature the lady he served was, or… well, Unique? Hwyn had to sigh inwardly whenever he tried to find the adjectives to define his life or his masters, though his mind still made the insane attempt to try and do so. Either way, watching her eat on this particular morning was amusing in it’s own way, but Hwyn hoped that he’d only have to insist she cleaned her face and not everything else around her. Though she managed to quarantine the mess to her hands and face mostly. Though, perhaps the funniest part of it all was how nonchalant she was about it all, if Eva was capable of being embarrassed it was not something he’d ever seen.

He had decided that his feeling about Eva had changed as he’d spent the last two seasons with her, he wasn’t sure he could forgive her for the brand she’d placed on him, but at the same time, like all wounds it had healed. He’d accepted his position without much of a fuss, something that he wasn’t sure was worth even feeling shame over. In most ways his life had improved, he hadn’t had to be lonely since that time, a recompense that while perhaps not knowingly paid, was nearly equal to the collateral.

His thoughts were cut short however by his master’s request. Letting her guide him to his knee’s Hwyn bit back the desire to ask her what she was doing, she never deigned to answer anyway, he’d just have to let her have her way as she was used to.

When she moved her face so close to his, the first sensation that hit was smell, it was in some ways, Eva’s smell. Some might say that alcohol reeked, but the smells of the fruity wines that seemed to permeate her breath were in his opinion pleasant even with the acrid notes of spirits, then the sugary smell of the apple preserves followed an addition to Eva’s natural scent. Looking back at Eva Hwyn reddened due to having her in such a close proximity though he no longer felt the need to break her gaze either. Looking back at her Hwyn stared into her eyes as she looked into his, though the addition of the glass was… decidedly peculiar the way her eye bulged out at his almost made him snicker, though it was interesting. He knew what she was looking for, and again he could not allow himself to use the power he’d gained in Alvadas, it was a part of him he disdained, whatever it was. It was one thing to have eyes that made him look like a freak; it was another to have eyes that when he used them the wring way always gave him headaches. He didn’t let himself slip into using them, he’d avoided using them nearly entirely over the vacation out of fear for what they were. To him they were… they were beautiful, but… unnatural. It was funny, at a glance his scars and eyes identified him as a freak. However his master was in many ways the inverse, her odd mannerisms and traits made her different, but at a glance one wouldn’t know them. These thoughts slipped through his lips forced out of him by a desire to break the silence beneath the awkward stare of Eva.

“m-my eye’s aren’t really all that special… I-in f-fact! I’d much rather have p-p-p-p-p-p-pretty eyes like your’s Eva, I mean, you think my eyes are weird, right? L-like… who would want eyes that make you look like you took a djedstorm to the face… hahah..”

Letting his apprehension and shame about his own eyes slip forth he hoped Eva would lose interest in them, though what sort of things worked on her tended to vary vastly.

“Hey.. Uhm… Miss.. Eva… Not to complain, but… you, and your glass thingy… are covered… In jam.. I can clean you up….! I I I mean, I c-c-c-can Clean your desk and everything else for you Ma’am.. Sorry”

Fidgeting under her gaze unwilling to break her gaze for fear of her ire Hwyn waffled looking for an out from the situation and making a mess of his words in the process his cheeks now decidedly crimson from embarrassment.

Postby Evarista on March 9th, 2017, 7:24 pm

This was not the first time Evarista saw these eyes up close, but it was the first time she looked deeply into them, seeking whatever truths their aura would show her. It was a piece of his past, but also a piece of his being, and while Evarista was used to being surrounded by people she didn't understand, she couldn't accept being in the dark about Hwyn. She has kept him close to herself for a good while now. He was furniture, but furniture with a soul, and on occasion she had the urge to pry into that soul to see what it hid. After all, despite being younger he's clearly experienced a lot more of the big world than she did.

The auristic lines and figures began to take form, undulating behind the magnifying glass in colors she couldn't describe. Evarista has never auristically examined human eyes before, but she was fairly sure they would not look like this. The prismatic corona around each iris grew, spilling out of its natural boundary, and then out through the magnifying glass, until her vision was completely filled with an abstract pulse that quickly overwhelmed her senses. She couldn't understand a single of the auristic signals and patterns unfolding before her, but not because it was particularly complex or intricate. It felt more like these patterns were never meant to be understood by the human mind at all – a locked door with no keyhole.

A sensible researcher would have stopped there, but Evarista was even more attracted. This was the sort of mystery that set off the alarm bells in her muddled mind; an imaginary voice calling from beyond. Calling her to come closer. Calling her to delve deeper. Of course, staring at the beautiful but unfathomable patterns would give her nothing, but it was far too early to call this a failure. She had many more senses than just sight, and she knew that an aura can be perceived through any of them, and each sense would reveal new information that the other senses could not.

Evarista's left hand, which was still resting on Hwyn's shoulder, suddenly slid inwards, slowly creeping up the side of his neck and then gently cupping his flushed cheek. He was saying something, but she didn't even attempt to make out the words, merely enjoying the nervous notes of his voice. In one fluid motion, her thumb slipped under the magnifying glass and slid towards his eye. If only she could touch the surface, maybe... no, certainly, the aura would reveal something she could never have thought of.

Just before Evarista was about to push her thumb deep into Hwyn's eye socket, the auristic picture suddenly began to fade, rapidly losing fidelity. Her vision became blurry, making her pause her machinations and blink rapidly to recover the image, but it didn't help. The girl was struck by the realization that her powers were spent. Which was ridiculous, considering how little of them she was using. There's no way she could be this drained after the little auristic foray she just did... but her body feel extremely heavy none the less.

Holding up the magnifying glass was beginning to feel like exhausting labor, so she lowered it and leaned back in her chair, still unable to see clearly and still unable to determine where this massive fatigue came from. Hwyn's features swam in front of her, and the magnifying glass slipped out of her rapidly numbing hand, falling a mercifully short distance to the floor with a soft clap.

"Bring... water."

Moving her suddenly parched tongue with some difficulty, Evarista issued the most urgent command she could think of. Her eyebrows were raised far above her groggy eyes, making her look just as confounded over the situation as she actually was. So, this was the power of his eyes? They attracted curiosity with their strange colors, and then stole every drop of power from anyone who looked into them? Clever. Very clever.

That was the last coherent theory her mind could form, before it began diffusing into a chaotic mess of auristic patterns and deductions, both related and unrelated to the object she just examined. Covering her clammy face with her hands, the girl shut her eyes tightly in a futile attempt to escape the assault of delirium. Slowly sinking into auristic overgiving of a sort she has never before experienced, Evarista has not even begun to realize how deep in trouble she actually was, and what a curse she was about to suffer through.

For a curse it felt like.

And a curse it was.

It was scary, not many things Eva did perturbed him anymore but he still had a hard time when the woman got physical, her touch was, scary he supposed. More like it always had a reason behind it, if he knew why she was doing something it didn’t scare him. like when she drug him around by the hand, or painted him. But at this moment her reasons were beyond him, and with Eva the unknown made him nervous.

As her hand wandered up his throat to his face her cool fingers dancing across his flash while her eyes bored through him as if she was seeing the floor behind him. It was an odd feeling, it oft felt like to Eva he wasn’t even there, or that… he was there to her but only as a body, he was never sure. But he was always present, and in moments like this his whole being manifested in a cold tense frustration. When her fingers moved higher to his cheek nearly to his eye, he wanted to run to bolt out of the room to run from the house and never look back, and yet, he couldn’t. He never could, even in the jungle he couldn’t run from her, he didn’t know why, but he couldn’t.
Then the moment was over. It was like his masters body had all the energy and life sucked from it, she shuddered once and then dropped, the light in her eyes faded and her grip on his body, and his soul faded as she collapsed into herself once again a pale girl with no power. Bring water she beckoned. He smiled wanly as he nodded, she was at his mercy now whatever she’d done had weakened her, and he could see it anyone who saw her like this would know that there was nothing to fear before them. Yet… Hwyn shook his head clearing the dark thoughts that danced at the edge of his mind. He wasn’t that sort of person, he didn’t relish in pain or harm, and be them odd emotions, he felt something for his master, a certain protectiveness that made him want to care for her. So fetch the water he did.

Bringing back a small pitcher of cool water, and a basin Hwyn leapt down stairs and through hallways as he went his small form speeding through the somnolent household his master needed him and he was not going to allow her to suffer when he could help. Back in her room in moments Hwyn Poured Eva glass of water before wetting a cloth and pressing the damp towel against Eva’s forehead. He was not sure of it was an illness that had taken her or something else but her infirmities worried him they were oddly brought on and unexplainable. Had something from there vacation caught up with her?

“Miss Eva? Are you ill? Can I do anything for you…. Was… was it my fault…?”

Holding the cool cloth to her head Hwyn trembled, was it his fault, were the strange eyes the snake had given him now hurting others? He hated his eyes, they always caused trouble, and maybe now theyed hurt somebody, somebody he didn’t want to hurt. Reaching up with his free hand, he brushed his bangs forward so that they hid his eyes. Hurting people was something he tried to avoid, but imagining that he’d done it without even wanting too was scary.

While the boy was gone, Evarista remained in her armchair almost unmoving, frozen in an unnatural pose with her palms pressed against her temples, as if to prevent her head from inflating. It felt as though countless hatches opened in her mind, allowing all the ambient dirt of the world to freely flow in. The abstract auristic swirls of the dancing before her eyes slowly warped and solidified, taking vaguely humanoid forms. Walking around her, talking about something. Touching each other and even moving things around her room, as if it was no big deal. But the things weren't actually moving. She knew it full well. There was no one in her room – at least not currently. She was fully aware that nothing of this was real, but that awareness didn't make things easier.

Hunching until her back hurt, she stared at the ground, trying to avoid looking up. Streams of sweat poured down her face as the very air grew thick with color and difficult to inhale. It felt like trying to breathe jelly. The viscous air gave clear resistance as she attempted to draw it into her lungs. It was like yesterday's soup, slimy, disgusting and piercing her with an unpleasant sensation. Clearly not real. She had originally wanted to experience how it was to touch an aura, and this was definitely something like it, but it was not how she had imagined. It was not an enlightening experience in the least – the new information was not fit for human consumption, and even less so for a subprime human such as her.

Grabbing the corner of her collar with one hand, Evarista tugged it to the side as if to free her throat from a chokehold. The heavy wheezing ringing in her ears must have been nothing but her own respiration, growing increasingly labored with every breath. Just as the air was about to turn solid in her air canals and she thought she'd suffocate, something cold was pressed against her face. Shuddering from the sudden chill, she felt the air thin a little, taking a sharp and deep breath immediately. Hwyn's silhouette and his worried expression went briefly into focus before her, showing that he was holding something to her forehead. A chilling and refreshing wave slowly spread across her brain, making the twisting illusions fade slightly.

Happy to get a moment of relief, Evarista sighed loudly while taking the glass from Hwyn's hand and draining it in one swoop. The sour aftertaste of wine still lingering in her mouth made her cringe. Oh, how well this morning had started, and how quickly it was ruined. Either way, she had to get back to bed while she still could. Grabbing the closes thing for support, which happened to be Hwyn's shoulder, she rose to her feet with a rigid jerk and took a step towards the bed. The coolness brought by the water, both within and without, was again being overwhelmed by the feverish heat that surged forth from some unknown abyss inside of her. The smudged silhouettes around her began taking shape again, taunting her with their movements. No matter where she looked, they were all turned towards her with their blurry, discolored and faceless countenances, crowding around her, but never touching her.

Still leaning on Hwyn with one arm, Evarista closed her eyes and waving her free arm in front of her, as if to make her way in a crowd. Closing her eyes didn't help, though. The room and the figures were still there. It was as if she had no eyelids at all. Giving a pained whine, the girl leaned forward and shuffled towards the bed intently, punching the air in front of her to shoo away the obstructive hallucinations. Even though they were just next to her, her fists didn't seem to reach them, as if they were actually very far away. Were these people she knew? Were these images of the past, or the future? Just her imagination? Maybe they were ghosts? ...maybe this wasn't actually a hallucination, then?

"Uggh... aaargh!"

Shuffling blindly in a zig-zag across the room, Evarista felt her composure melt quickly. Knowing that the images were fake didn't help anymore. When she finally made her way to the bed and was about to bury her face in her pillow, the bed suddenly moved away from her with a short jerk. Was this still an illusion, or did the bed actually move? She could no longer tell. And that scared her.

Not knowing where to escape the delirium, the young aristocrat glanced at the open window. The curtains wafted invitingly at her. There were nothing waiting for her outside, right?

Before the urge to jump head-first out of the window overcame her, Evarista's unfocused gaze fell on the bookcase next to the window. But the interesting thing was not a book. Her hand was already reaching for the prayer beads sitting alone on one of the shelves. Touching the round surface of the beads made her remember the strange auristic experience she had at the Outpost chapel. The dark halls. The robed priest, his face obscured from view. The fire. The auristic protuberance. And finally... the pain.

Shocked by a sudden realization, the girl held onto the bookcase for support to avoid losing balance, staring at Hwyn with her bloodshot and cloudy eyes. Moving her tongue correctly was strangely difficult, as if some external force wanted to prevent her from saying the words.

"Bring a kh... candle. I'm... it's... fire. Fire!"

Behind the schizophrenic roil of false auras obscuring her view, she could only see the boy as a dark shadow behind it all, but he was the only thing in this world that she knew was real in this moment.

Home Semi-sweet home

Watching his mistress careen about the room was both shocking and horrifying, he wasn’t sure if he was safe to touch her or even be near her and yet he couldn’t leave her he hadn’t the slightest clue what she would do in his absence. Watching her struggle Hwyn finally decided that he’d have to do something else she really would harm herself. Pulling her into a tight hug to steady her Hwyn eased his master back onto her bed as she asked for a candle, he eyed the beads in her hand even as her quavering voice barked out an order. Looking at her dazed from Hwyn thought the last thing she needed was fire but being defiant seemed a bad choice when she was already irate.
Nodding Hwyn disappeared from the room rapidly saying he’d be back quickly to search for a candle, he didn’t know what she was planning but he hoped that the candle would be the only flame he saw today. Rushing off down two flights of stairs Hwyn scurried towards the cabinets in pantry where candles and other such mundane items were stored. Fumbling through the cabinet Hwyn yelped as he sliced his hand on something, pulling his hand back to reveal a small paring knife as the culprit. Grimacing Hwyn forced himself to take a breath and less frantically find a candle, three cabinets later he discovered his quarry. Three tall tallow wax candles, scooping up the three in his non-bleeding hand Hwyn clenched his other fist closed ignoring the mild throb coming from his palm, it was a shallow cut but it was irritating. It seemed like he was less cautious than he had once been. Halfway out of the room Hwyn frowned, the candles were fine and dandy, but he needed a tinder box if he was going to light them, again he was being forgetful. Turning back He snagged the necessary tool and left the pantry again.
Tromping back up the stairs Hwyn rushed back into Eva’s room unsure of what predicament he was going to find his master in. placing the candles down on her desk Hwyn turned back to Eva hoping her condition hadn’t worsened.

“I’ve got your candles Miss, but I think you need to lie down for a bit, I uhm… I think you’re quite ill miss, should I fetch a doctor or can I do anything for you…. I’m sorry I’m not more helpful.”

Blethering as his nerves got to him as he worried about the state of his mistress Hwyn stammered as he stood by her bedside waiting on a an order or an idea that he could latch onto just so he didn’t have to keep thinking so he could focus on a task or some way to bring relief to Eva over something he feared he’d caused, there was an unpleasant guilt building in his stomach along with the fear of what would happen if something bad happened to Eva and he got blamed for it. Even the stinging in his hand was dull in comparison to the hot ball of iron forming in his stomach as he thought of the implications, they could have his head if someone believed he’d poisoned Eva or something of the sort. Looking at her form Hwyn frowned her body looked clammy as sweat beaded her brow and made her silken clothes cling to her. Even if it was spring a cool breeze from the window could chill Eva or make her uncomfortable, popping over to the window Hwyn pulled it shut drawing the drapes significantly darkening the room.
“oh uhm… Eva what do you want me to do with the candles? I brought a tinder box too…. B-but uhm, I’ll light them for you, i-if you’ll let me anyway.”

Peering through the thickening veil of hallucinations, Evarista cast a weary glance at Hwyn's agile figure darting out of the room. Was he going to bring her what she asked, or was he simply escaping a hairy situation? Maybe bring help? She feared attracting the attention of her family and servants alike, and dealing with them now was not something she was in the right state of mind for. She winced just from imagining people pouring into the room, real figures intermingling with imagined ones, demanding explanations of what was going on, why there was a commotion so early in the morning and why everything was Evarista's fault once again. This time, Evarista did not have the composure for sardonic responses. If someone tried to be snarky with her now, she would probably respond with deadly violence without even thinking beforehand. Sitting on the bed where Hwyn had left her, she fought back the gradual onset of nausea as the auristic patterns began spinning quicker and quicker before her eyes. The walls and furniture seemed to float freely around her, their forms distorting and running like honey. No... maybe everything else was standing still, and she was the one floating.

Every moment of Hwyn's absence felt like an eternity, made worse by her not even knowing if he was going to return or not. Trying to rise from the bed made the magical vertigo worse. She felt like walking to the window and throwing up, but the five paces of distance seemed insurmountable, and she slumped back on the bed in resignation. Her foggy gaze was riveted to the door, and her left hand clutched the prayer beads in a spasm. It was a good opportunity to pray, but she couldn't come up with any words, only a definitive will and desire.

After what felt like many bells of torment, the door swung open, introducing her blonde slave. He was carrying something. She couldn't make out what it was until he put it down on the desk. Candles. He actually brought them. Hearing his stammering voice again was more reassuring than anything else could be.

"Light one... light it!" Cutting in hoarsely right before he finished speaking, she mustered her newfound strength to stand up from the bed and stagger towards the desk.

The first spark from the tinderbox seared her eyes with a green light, making tears run down her cheeks as she threw herself onto the armchair. Of course, the strong green light was not the spark itself, but its aura. She already sure this was the solution. When the candle was finally lit, a smooth wave of color emanated from it, spreading in all directions and washing away the distorted chaos of faceless figures and were about to overpower and suffocate her sanity. As she concentrated her attention on the fire, Evarista's heavy breathing gradually lost its pained overtone and became more like sighs of relief. The aura flowing from the tiny fire erased everything around them, reminding her of waves on he lakeshore beach as the candlelight leaned right and left minutely.

Repeating from memory, Evarista raised her hand and reached towards the light, never taking her eyes away and never blinking. The dark hall of the chapel, the words of the priest, all repeated in her mind, compelling her to seize the fire. The candle still seemed very far away when a searing pain pierced her hand, abruptly ending the soothing experience and making her jolt away from the candle, almost flipping backwards together with the armchair.

It took the rattled aristocrat a few moments to recover from the rain of shocks that was just heaped upon her, but when she eventually took a sober look around her, the hallucinations were gone. The only two things that remained was the candle with a smoking wick, which she just snuffed with her bare hand, and the nagging pain in said hand. Her room was back to its empty and murky self. Seldom did she appreciate the murkiness and emptiness as much as now.

Finally, her foggy gaze stopped on Hwyn's face. He looked fairly tormented by the whole ordeal. Without thinking, Evarista reached out to him and wordlessly pulled him into a tight embrace, pressing her thin lips to his forehead before burying her face in his blonde locks. A strange sensation overcame her, a brief but intoxicating moment of happiness, mixed with the scent of his hair and the warmth of his body. When she had asked for candles, an altogether more sensible servant would assume that she was planning to set the house on fire, and would naturally not comply with her delirious demands... which would likely have ended in the hallucinations turning her feral and making her go on a killing spree inside the mansion. But Hwyn chose loyalty over common sense.

She then understood what that strange sensation was. It was the ability to trust someone, something she has never before experienced. Before letting go of the boy, she whispered into his ear, her voice back to its normal leisurely tone.

"Let's go for a walk."

Rising from the armchair decisively, she took his hand and strode out of the room, leaving the fleeting nightmare of this morning behind. Her burned hand was closed firmly around his, sensing the trickle of blood seeping out of the cut on his palm. It hurt, but she enjoyed this pain.
