Character Vitals

Race: Dhani (Iyvess: Saltwater)
Gender: Male
Age: 115
Birthday: 4, Spring, 402 AV.
Birthplace: Coast of Falyndar

Human Appearance: In his human form, Zul is 5'11"" tall and weighs 225 lbs. His shoulders are broad and while not overly bulky, he is well defined and quite solid in stature. He has a youthful face with short hair and a very light beard. He is not overly fond of clothing due to its cumbersome effects on shifting between the various Dhani forms in addition to much of his life being spent in and around the ocean. When he does choose to dress, normally in the presence of humanoids, Zul usually wears a simple loincloth, belt and a pouch for carrying a few possessions. Modesty is not much of concern for Zul yet the concept of vanity isn't all that important either.

Dhani Appearance: In his Dhani form, Zul increases significantly in overall size. From head to tail he is 18 feet long and weighs near 375 lbs. His overall stature thickens slightly yet remains rather narrow and agile compared to other land-based dhani of comparable length. His serpentine heritage becomes more than obvious as his head blends the traits of a snake and those of a human into a frightening hybridization. When taking this form, Zul loses all head and facial hair as his facial structure is altered and becomes covered in scales. While his arms and torso remain humanoid, they take on a somewhat soft, rubbery texture. His waist and legs morph into a long, tapered tail ending with a paddlelike tip. His overall coloring, both flesh and scales takes on a blueish hue. Starting at the back of his head and running down his back and continuing down the length of his tail is a color pattern consisting of blueish background overlaid with black stripes down the length. His fingers are webbed and another webbed flap of skin extends from just above his elbow down to his waist. The latter remains folded against his body until needed for swimming. Finally, an obvious gill-structure forms on either side of his neck, allowing for waterbreathing.

Sea Krait Appearance: In full Krait form, Zul is a massive serpent. At 24 feet long from head to tail, 8 inches in diameter and weighing 385 lbs, Zul's snake form is a sight to behold. This forms coloring consists of a blueish background overlaid with black stripes along the length of the body. His head is roughly equal in size compared to his body. He has limited constricting abilities to help him wrap around prey to bite it, but his main feature is his paddle like tail which allows him to move extremely fast in the water. Apart from two inward pointed fangs he possess rows of serrated teeth that help him rip into his prey. He also possesses gills in this form.

Snake Details: Zul is patterned after a Banded Sea Krait.

General Description: Considered a slightly dangerous snake; usually becoming aggressive if threatened.

Length: Between 3-6 feet average although Dhani are much larger on average.

Weight: Between 1-2 lbs average although Dhani are much heavier on average

Coloring: Blueish background overlaid with black stripes along the length of the body.

Fangs: Two backwards-pointing teeth help serpents grip their prey while a series of serrated teeth help tear flesh.

Disposition: Normally docile unless they feel threatened.

Diet: Banded sea kraits primarily feed on varieties of eels, but also eat small fish.

Defenses: While probing crevices with their head, banded sea kraits are unable to observe approaching predators and can be vulnerable. The snakes can deter predators, such as larger fish, sharks, and birds, by fooling them into thinking that their tail is their head, because the color and movement of the tail is similar to that of the snake's head. For example, the lateral aspect of the tail corresponds to the dorsal view of the head

Venom: A powerful neurotoxin protein that in small doses causes short-term paralysis with higher doses causing extended periods of total loss of motorfunction possibly leading to death.

Character Concept

Shossazul, Zul for short, is a Constrictor Dhani who has embraced some rather non-Dhani traits. Unlike many of his brethren who mirror the traits that their creator, Siku, Goddess of Snakes, Zul does not enjoy cruelty. Realizing that he is at the upper end of the food chain, he feels little need to flaunt it. Instead of taking part in "normal" Dhani behavior, Zul has discovered a love for collecting. He enjoys collecting any item he perceives as being unique, odd or otherwise unusual. Of course, what is unique, odd or unusual is all in the eye of the beholder so some of the things that gain his interest could, to others, look like useless junk. Along with collecting, Zul enjoys a bit of exploration. In the jungles of Falyndar, there is no shortage of forgotten places waiting to be rediscovered. Knowing little fear, Zul is always willing to engage in any manner of dangerous journeys, especially if there are collectables to be found.

Character History

Born to a small nest on the coast of Falyndar, Zul was one of many in his mother's clutch. Although he remembers his youth, he doesn't dwell much on it. The early years were somewhat dull; days spent sleeping, nights spent exploring and discovering and refining his hunting skills. As the years went by, Zul lived the typical life of a young Iyvess until shortly after transitioning from a snakeling to a youngling. Upon learning how to transform from a snake into a Dhani, Zul was introduced to a new world of curiosity and discovery. Quickly he developed a desire to learn more about the parts of the world that opened up for him upon his newfound transformation. This caused a rift between him and those who made up the den he was a part of.

As he became more and more independent, Zul started to isolate himself more and more from his den. He would regularly disappear to the coast and let himself become buried in the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of the coastal zone as well as the outskirts of the rain forest. He would seek out hidden nooks and crannies on the jungle outskirts and delve deep into the caves and undersea caverns that lined the coast. During his explorations, he would often find various objects that intrigued him. Strange colored rocks and gems, unique looking bones and skulls were the first things that caught his interest. As his explorations grew in range, Zul found a wider variety of items to add to a small but growing collection. The most fascinating items were those he found near and around both ancient and current human civilizations; even those buried beneath the sea. Pottery shards, old tools, pieces of weapons and armor, colorful cloth, gemstones and pieces of precious metal all had places in his collection.

When he was old enough to master the human form, Zul used this to his advantage when encountering other humans. The closer he could get, the more he could learn about them and the items in his collection. Along with his fascination with objects, Zul couldn't help but wonder about where the items came from, who they belonged to, what the person or animal was like that the items came from. Eventually, his explorations and search for items led him far away from his den which he decided not to return to.

His desire to learn more about the objects in his still small but growing collection led Zul to offer up some of his items in exchange for being taught something strange yet exciting by a strange old woman living on an isolated piece of coastline on the east coast across from the island of Black Rock. He only knew her by the name of Synokia. He stumbled upon her by chance when he was exploring the area. A small shack stood at the jungle's edge. Its small porch was covered in all manner of strange object. Skulls, bones, hair, claws and clothing were all arranged in unique sculptures or hanging from the underhang of the roof. They were covered in strange circles, scribbles and writing. A peek through one of the unshuttered windows revealed even more items inside.

A gravelly female voice from inside startled Zul as it invited him inside. Hesitant at first but unable to take his attention away from the vast collection of oddities that surrounded him, Zul stepped inside. After a long discussion between two collectors who each enjoyed their crazy hobby, Synokia explained that there was a way that one could reach into an object and draw forth its hidden power. She gave a basic overview of what it was to be a Maledictor and practice the art of Malediction. In awe over the concept, Zul asked her to teach him. She set the condition of allowing her to see his collection and perhaps being open to trade. Though he wasn't all that interested in trade, he did want to learn from her and also loved the idea of letting someone else see his collection.

Zul left the shack only to return a short time later with two large bags containing his collection. Each item was wrapped carefully in leaves and fur as to help protect it turn transport. He then proceeded to lay the items out on a table before Synokia. As she examined Zul's collection, she admitted that he had an eye for the "good stuff". She then offered to trade her teaching of Malediction for a couple small alligator skulls and the claw of a jungle ixam. Though it pained him to part with the items, Zul agreed and his training began.

Zul studied with Synokia for a couple of years before she called an end to his training. She told him that she had trained him solidly in the basics but it was up to him to expand his skill. While she enjoyed his company and his interest in the art, she was a hermit by her own choosing and too much company would not do. She sent him off on his own. Zul also enjoyed the company but he too was becoming anxious. With his newly learned knowledge, he wanted to explore even more and find more unique items in which to practice Maledicting. He felt that by staying much longer with Synokia, he would be hindering her own practice of the art and possibly even compete for items to add to their respective collections. Their parting was friendly and thankful as Zul returned to the jungle.

He would return a few years later to find Synokia gone. In fact, the shack that she lived in was also gone with no trace of it ever existing. Zul searched for a short time but found nothing. She had been a strange old woman and her disappearance matched. With no clues and no direction to look for her, Zul gave up and made his way north. He had an oddly strong feeling that something exciting waited for him there.
