The Kingdom of Sultros is made up of five cities; Sultros, Vizerian, Coglias, Terras and Pitrius along with their own Citadels. In addition, the Kingdom encompasses hundreds of square miles of mountainous, nearly inhospitable land. Trading posts, border posts and a number of unique, exotic and often dangerous sites exist both above ground and below.

Ialari arrived at her assigned laboratory after taking a break following her time in the forge. The lower levels of the Silver Tower were purposeful in form and structure. One descended the central staircase from the ground level down to the forges. Below the forges were the various laboratories where the Sentinels researched, experimented and practiced a number of different magical disciplines. Although World Magic was the primary source of magical study, some amount of Personal Magic was also encouraged and supported in the labs. For Ialari, it was one of the smaller Magecraft laboratories where she would undergo her first actual Magecraft task. The hammer she had recently forged was one of the primary tools of the magecraft process. While she would be provided with the necessary tools, already magecrafted, to pratice the discipline, her instructors required that she create at least one hammer of her own to be enchanted.

While Ialari had been in the labs before during her instruction on the Basic Principles of Magecraft, the lab itself never ceased to astound her in its fantastical design. The silver archway that offered entrance to the lab was covered in countless glyphs. Although Ialari was not familiar with most of them, she did recognize a few as being related to magecraft. Functionally, the glyphs were meant to help contain any wild djed that may be released from a botched procedure in order to reduce the damage done to anyone or anything outside of the lab.

The lab itself was rather small. It was too dangerous to allow a large number of projects to be worked on at once so the need for a large lab just wasn't there. In the center of the lab was a short, raised dais with a silver pedestal in the center. The dais was glyphed to contain any loose djed. Surrounding the base of the dais were a number of workbenches and tables holding various tools and containers baring varied catalysts and reagents used in the magecraft process. Against the silver walls were several cabinets, cases, shelves and crates filled with a variety of common reagents as well as few of the more rare ones.

The ceiling of the lab was covered in an intricate pattern of circles and glyphs that Ialari did not recognize yet theorized were used to help focus and contain djed. The fact that so many glyphs filled the lab always made her a little uneasy as it meant terrible releases of wild djed were all too possible.

Stepping further into the lab, Ialari saw her instructor, Sentinel Tirin, a Pitrius woman who appeared to be only a few years older than Ialari. Tirin was a dark-haired beauty with piercing, deep blue eyes. She was dressed in her Sentinel Robes; black trimmed in silver with a silver flame on the back. When she saw Ialari enter, she smiled and gave a respectful nod of her head before greeting the apprentice in a soft almost soothing voice, "Ah, Ialari, good day to you. You're early. I hadn't expected you for awhile yet." Tirin noted that Ialari was carrying a hammer. "Excellent, I see you completed the first lesson in forging your first magecraft hammer. May I see it?"

Ialari returned Tirin's smile and walked over to her. Ialari always like Tirin. The instructor was a number of years older than Ialari yet never talked down to her. Since Ialari's entry into study at the Tower, Tirin had served as a mentor and friend; helping to keep Ialari out of trouble and advising her along the way. Ialari was indeed one who found herself in a number of unpleasant incidents since coming to the Tower. She was not one to accept authority easily, especially when it came to being dismissed or underestimated. This caused confrontations with other apprentices and instructors alike. It was Tirin that took notice of Ialari and displayed genuine support for the younger isur.

Ialari walked over to Tirin and held her hammer out for inspection.

Tirin took the hammer from Ialari and slowly turned it around in her hands. She traced the contours of the hammer with her fingers, feeling the pathways of djed that made it what it was. Though the hammer itself was not "magical", it, like everything else in the world, was made up of djed. Tirin, an expert magecrafter was also an auristic particularly skilled in reading auras through touch. Thus she was able to literally feel the potential of the hammer for accepting magecraft.

She could feel Ialari's touch upon the item and feel how the djed pathways of each piece of the hammer were altered when she brought them together into a greater whole. Although it wasn't the most skilled piece of work, wasn't made of the best of materials and wasn't the most attractive thing she had ever saw and felt, Tirin recognized the pathways of latent djed as being capable of being built upon enough to accept the amount of magecraft required to make it a useful tool.

Ialari watched Tirin inspect the hammer. The older isur was a mystery to Ialari even though they had known each other for a few years now. Still, Ialari knew a few things about her mentor yet only enough to increase the mystery. Tirin was a member of the Baelfyre family; a family with historical ties to the Tower. A number of highly skilled Fire Reimancers came from that family. Tirin's call was not reimancy though as Magecraft interested her more. Though not a reimancer like her relatives, she excelled in crafting items possessing fire-related abilities. She advanced through the ranks of the Sentinels rather quickly and eventually made it to the rank if instructor. The reasons why she advanced so quickly and why she chose to remain at the Tower instead of moving on elsewhere were unknown. Usually, when one makes their way through the Sentinels quickly, it is because of family, influence or some other form of leverage over another. In Tirin's case, her family, while maintaining several skilled Sentinels among its ranks, was not influential enough to grant Tirin quick advancement. TIrin herself was not one who was known to have anything on anyone else. In fact, she was seen as relatively harmless.

Ialari's knowledge of Tirin came from her own investigations. Tirin herself was not very open about her personal life details. Ialari saw this as asking for a bit of snooping. For all her effort, Ialari was unable to find anything on Tirin. Even Ialari's father, an instructor at the Tower for decades, had nothing on Tirin. Ialari had went so far as to sneak into her father's chambers and search through his notes. Thankfully, her father was predictable enough to protect his journals with a simple magecrafted lock that accepted only the blood of a Pythone to open. While she discovered many things about many others in the Tower, she still found nothing on Tirin. Though many others would likely have given up at that point, it only deepened the mystery of Tirin for Ialari.

While discovering the mystery behind Tirin had initially drawn Ialari to her, the two of them had grown closer over the past couple of years. Now, as Ialari watched Tirin examine the hammer, she looked forward to what her mentor would say about it.

After a few moments of examination, Tirin handed the hammer back to Ialari. "Well done, Ialari, it has what is required to accept the process. You should be proud of your work." Tirin looked over her shoulder at a nearby workbench. "You've made it this far so let us begin. Over there you will find a number of tools that you will need. They've been crafted by others who have come before you. Pick out what you need and claim them as your own. You will need hammers and tongs. You will learn how they are made when you magecraft your own hammer and I will teach you the glyphs that are used to empower the pedestal and charge basin. You can examine the optical ring, mirrors and lenses to see how they are cut so that in the future, if needed, you can craft your own resources to use in your crafting." Tirin motioned for Ialari to move to the workbench where a large number of different tools and instruments were laid out.

Ialari walked over to the workbench where dozens of different sized hammers of varying shape and style were assembled. Laid out before her were the work of many magecrafters who came before her. Study of magecraft at the Tower was, for those accepted into the ranks of the Sentinels, effectively free of charge until one's level of expertise grew to greater levels. Eventually, the free ride ended and magecrafters were required to give back to the Tower in exchange for continued use of the resources. The crafting of the basic tools used in the discipline which were then granted to future apprentices was one way to pay for the art.

Ialari looked through the collection. There were hammers small enough that they could only be used effectively with one's thumb and forefinger. From there, they increased in size with each increment being useful depending on the size of the item to be magecrafted. Many of the hammers were rather plain looking as they were more focused on function than appearance while others, like Ialari's, were more stylized with shapes and unique patterns etched into the metal. As she looked at each one, Ialari needed to pick five to go along with her own. Together they would form a complete set. Tirin walked up beside her and handed Ialari a special leather harness. The harness stretched over the shoulder and around the waist and was all black with a small silver and onyx buckle with a silver flame in the center. The harness had several rings of differing sizes attached to it that would accommodate the different sized hammers being hung in them. There were also special holsters for the different tongs that Ialari would also have to pick out.

Ialari took the harness from Tirin and put it on while adjusting the fit. "That you, Tirin." Ialari looked at the hammers as her eyes momentarily widened. "There's so many of them, all so different. How do I choose? How do I know which ones are the right ones?"

Tirin smiled knowingly and said, "You pick what speaks to you. Consider it another lesson. A good magecrafter can recognize objects that will aid them in their work. All you have to do is listen; not with your ears but with your soul. Let yourself feel the magic around you and you will hear it speak to you."

Ialari looked back to the workbench. As she glanced at the different hammers, she held out her hand and ran her fingers over each one. She didn't look at the hammers as much as she felt them. Eventually, her hand stopped at one.

The first one that came to her attention was a hammer a bit smaller than her own. It had an iron head and wooden handle with a black leather grip. Spiraled around the head was a copper coil that resembled a tail of sorts. Other than for the coiled tail, the hammer was rather simple looking. However, when Ialari held it in her hand, she could feel that there was something different about it even if she couldn't identify it. Though she couldn't describe how it was different, she took the perceived difference as meaning it was one of the right ones.

Ialari looked then to Tirin who in turn gave a smile of acknowledgement. "Excellent. One down, four more to go. Then we will move on to the tongs. After that, you'll be ready to continue further."

Ialari continued picking out the hammers that would make up her own collection of tools. Like the first one, she picked the other four by relying more on her sense for magic and her touch than her sight. The second hammer, roughly in the middle as far as comparative sizes were concerned, was somewhat disturbing in appearance. The handle was made of bronze and looked like a series of skulls stacked on top of one another. The hammer's head resembled a skeletal fist on both ends. Although the details were not precise, the hammer still looks slightly menacing especially considering it was meant to be just a tool. The third hammer chosen was the smallest of the hammers she would choose. It was very simple in design with little detail. The only thing of note was an etching of an eye on the top of the head. The last two hammers Ialari chose appeared to have been crafted by the one magecrafter. Their design was identical although their sizes were different. Both had simple iron heads and copper handles. The heads bore patterns reminiscent of bat wings and the handles were tipped with what looked like a bundle of sharp teeth.

As Ialari picked out each of her hammers, she placed them in the rings of her harness. When she was finished choosing, Tirin motioned to another workbench where another collection of tools were held, these being the tongs that would be used to hold and manipulate items placed on the pedestal. Moving to the tongs, Ialari looked down to see what was available before undergoing the actual decision process.

The tongs were similar to those used in blacksmithing although the sizes were more varied. Design wasn't as varied with the tongs since functionality took greater precidence than it did with the hammers. The sizes varied from being as large as the largest blacksmith tongs to small enough that only the thumb and forefinger could be used to open and close them. Although lacking the more elaborate details of the hammers, some of the tongs still bore some design quirks. As Ialari sorted through them, she was able to pick out a set that looked quite similar. Each pair of tongs that she chose were created as a complete set by their creator. The fact that she picked them out randomly without really paying much attention rather astounded her. The set bore a theme of fire; each pair was etched with flames.

As she chose the tongs, she placed each one on the harness in the appropriate holster size. With her tools gathered, Ialari turned to face Tirin while awaiting further instruction.

Tirin led Ialari up to the center of the dais where the pedestal stood. The pedestal was carved out of onyx and polished to a near mirror-like finish. On the top of the pedestal, sat into a circular groove cut into the stone, was a ring of cold iron banded in copper. It was an inch thick, twice as tall and three feet in diameter. A series of clamps were attached to the ring that had a series of three different shaped mirrors and three different shaped glass lenses fitted into them. The clamps were adjustable and could be positioned at different heights and angles on the ring. Ialari had seen such pedestals and optical rings before yet they were mainly shown as pieced-out examples or in diagrams and sketches. In her earlier studies, the most she was allowed to do in a laboratory was observe from a distance.

As she stood before the pedestal, she saw the unique glyph etched into the center of the stone. The glyph was one of the first things she was taught and was the most basic yet one of the most important glyphs a magecrafter could learn. It was the glyph that empowered the pedestal and contained the magical energies manipulated withing the magecrafted item.

Tirin allowed Ialari a moment to view the pedestal; recognizing that it was the first time the apprentice had a chance to see one up close. With the moment having passed, Tirin said to Ialari, "As we begin, let us also review what you have been taught, shall we? If you will recall your early lessons, the first piece of magecrafting is the idea. You come up with an idea of what you want to do. It is from that idea that the entire process grows. What happens next?" Tirin wasn't about to lay it all out for Ialari. Ialari had been taught the basic theory and procedural overview, it was up to her to remember it.

Ialari had her notes about the entire process in her journal but she didn't need them. She was always a fast learner when it came to the more technical aspects of study at the Tower. She excelled in poisons because of her ability to picture the desired results in her mind before and during the poisoncrafting process. As she mixed a particular batch of ingredients, she could see the effects each one was known to have, pull them apart, mix them together with others and bring it all together into a more potent whole all in her mind's-eye. Magecrafting was to her, quite the same. Even from her early studies, she could picture in her mind an object and imagine all the possibilities, piece by piece, that could be harnessed, turned, twisted, broke down and rebuilt.

Ialari responded with no hesitation, When you have the idea in your mind of what you wish to create, you must collect the base item from its maker, or make it yourself. New, high quality items are the most desirable as the final product will reflect that quality in its final form. Also, if an item is not good enough, it will take more in the crafting process to get it to where it should be."

Tirin nodded and motioned for Ialari to continue while offering the apprentice a hand at the pedestal.

Ialari continued to speak the steps of the process as she placed her own hammer in the center of the pedestal. The chosen item is placed on the pedestal." She looked around while gesturing to the dais as she continued to talk. "The pedestal is often placed in an area that is secure and stabilized like this one." She then reached for the mirrors and lenses attached to the optical ring and began adjusting them. "These lenses and mirrors allow one to inspect the aura of the item. As the item is charged, new pathways in the items internal djed are created. By observing the aura through the lenses, one can monitor any changes."

Tirin nodded her satisfaction with Ialari's knowledge thus far of the process. I'm impressed. Do you feel like you're ready to take it to the next level and start the charging process? It will take the rest of today and the better part of tomorrow to finish."

A single nod followed by a simple, "Yes." Was Ialari's response.

Tirin motioned for Ialari to begin while giving a bit more instruction. Very well. First, you need to choose the right tool for the job. Remember, the preferred manner of manipulating the item from this point forth is with tongs. Any of them can be used and in some instances you may need more than one or even all of them depending on the project's size and shape. When charging the item, use whatever hammers you need to direct the djed in the desired path. For lower powered items, all that is required while charging is the monitoring of the items aura and making sure the new djed pathways are forming correctly." Tirin paused for a moment and then said, "I do hope you plan on delving into the discipline of Auristics. It will be invaluable to you in magecrafting. With something like this hammer, the auras are simple to read with the aid of the lenses. When you actually wish to work on full items, you will need to know how to read the auras else you won't know what direction to go with your charging. Of course, you will learn some basic auras and as your studies progress here but those are only really useful when using the lenses. Do you remember the correct positioning of the ring to initiate the process?"

"I do." Ialari said as she started adjusting the mirrors to three different heights. In addition to different heights, if observed from the top down, they were positioned in the shape of a right triangle. The lenses were then positioned in the exact opposite alignment from the mirrors. Then Ialari looked down at her harness and at the hammers and tongs. She chose a the largest of the tongs for manipulation and a mid-sized hammer to initiate the charging. With a tingle of anticipation giving a her goosebumps, she started.
