Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

Orin was still feeling the aches and pains of his intense training session a few days before. Working in the Tuvya Sasaran had made him appreciate how much work it actually was to be even a relatively competent fighter. It also, however, made him more determined than ever that he make a truly concerted effort at being able to fight. Even if Orin didn't particularly enjoy thrusting himself into life or death situations, they seemed to find him with alarming regularity. So Orin had to be prepared to face any threat the world might try to throw at him.

Besides, it would have a few additional benefits. First, it might improve his sense of self-worth. It had taken a severe beating at the beginning of the season when Orin had been taken down during his Kuvan test. While he'd still been deemed strong enough to gain the tattoo, losing had stung his pride, so Orin was doing his best never to let that happen again. The other, darker reason, was that Orin’s emotions had been feeling incredibly dull for a while now. Something about the summer air seemed to be sucking the emotion right out of the chef. So that's part of the reason why he was out here, pushing himself too hard too fast. It was part of an endeavor to both feel anything, and to keep his apathy from taking him over too completely. While this might be an extreme reaction, Orin really couldn’t think of a better way to accomplish all these goals.

So, he ran. Starting at his apartments, down one street, and another. Trying to keep his breath as even and level as possible, and failing more often than not. There was something he was trying to practice in conjunction with his running, so far without much success. When Orin saw a conveniently placed barrel, probably a rain barrel, he sped up, although not much seeing as his top speed wasn’t much beyond a jog. Nearing the barrel, Orin braced himself, then placed his hands on top and tried the lever himself over, using both the momentum from the run and his upper body strength, which admittedly wasn’t much, to launch himself.

It wasn’t quite as grace a vault as Orin had seen the various professional couriers using around town. In fact, Orin almost toppled on the dismount, as he’d failed to get his right knee completely clear of the barrel, and it had smacked against the side of the wood, in a way that Orin just knew was going to leave a bruise. Still, though it smarted, Orin was able to power through the pain. As he turned the corner, breath heaving from his continuing fast pace, he saw his destination looming in front of him. The Kendoka Sasaran and its almost twin, the Tuvya Sasaran were starting to actually feel comfortable, something Orin attributed to his many bells of hard work and dedication. While the Akalaks were continuously surprised to see a human, Orin simply let the condescension they occasionally showed to fuel the fire that kept him pushing himself far beyond what he’d done before.

Finally, he arrived, and slowed to a walk. Running, while still not easy, was getting slightly easier as time went on, and today Orin didn’t even feel a cramp, which he’d count as a victory any day. After walking for about a chime, he felt rested enough to enter the combat facility. The Sasaran was packed, as it was every time of the day. Say what you will about them -- which Orin didn’t, since they took offense easily, and he was vastly outnumbered and outmatched -- but they took their training extremely seriously. Making his way to the weapons racks, Orin scanned them before selecting two daggers that matched the size of the ones he normally fought with, and indeed, were hanging on his hips in case of emergencies. Although, what emergency would require the chef in a building full of warriors to respond to it with violence didn’t bear thinking about.

Taking up an empty space, Orin brought the daggers up, the one in his left hand in a backwards grip and the one in his right hand in the standard one. He’d been trying, with almost no success, to learn to use two blades simultaneously, and his progress had been frustratingly slow. Still, that didn’t stop him from trying.

Taking up a stance with his feet shoulder-width apart Orin attempted to bring his left hand up in a slash from below while his right hand moved in a slash from left to right across an imaginary opponent’s body. Unfortunately this time, as with every time before, his left arm moved too quickly, and smacked into his right arm as it went across. Growling with frustration to himself, Orin reset, more than ready to give it another try.

A voice from behind, however, stopped him. “You’re moving too fast. You have to breathe. To relax.”

Orin smiled, a genuine smile this time, and turned. “Davrah! It’s good to see you again.”

Davrah gave a smile in return. Orin was extremely glad to see the Akalak. Unusually, Davrah had dark purple skin, not the usual shade of blue, and a winning personality, both unexpected traits in an Akalak. The instructor had taken Orin under his wing once the Sasaran staff had discovered that the chef was actually quite serious about his time here. Davrah had apparently volunteered for the job, seeming to find great amusement in how ‘plucky’ the chef was. Orin didn’t mind much that this was a pet project. In exchange for the occasional joking and teasing, the human got a fantastic trainer, so Orin thought he got the better end of the deal.

Of course, not everything about Davrah was perfect. The Akalak clasped a hand on Orin’s shoulder. “So, have you done your strength exercises yet?” Orin groaned, and shook his head. Every time, Orin hoped Davrah would forget and every time the cook’s hopes were dashed. From the sly grin on the Akalak’s face, he knew it, too. “Alright, drop down and give me fine.” Shooting Davrah only a half-faked look of resentment, Orin got down, put his arms shoulder width apart, and kneeled so that his knees and toes were touching. Then, he straightened his legs, making sure not to let his hips move too far up or down. Finally, Orin began to lower himself to the ground.

Davrah began counting, slowly, since Orin was frankly terrible at pushups. The Akalak had taught Orin the technique in their first session, and when he’d found out that the human didn’t know how to do them, the fighter had been horrified. Now, Davrah took a perverse pleasure in putting Orin through his paces. As Orin went down, once, then again, feeling the strain in his arms and chest, Davrah commented, “Now, I know you’re a tiny and skinny little thing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t put on some muscle. How’re you going to fight when you can’t hold your weapon up.” That was primarily why Orin used daggers, but as he went for his third push-up the effort was too much to allow the cook to actually speak. “This is good for you. One day, you’ll thank me. Orin highly doubted that, and on his fourth push-up began thinking of the unspeakable revenges he’d visit on Davrah one day.

Finally Orin managed to push himself off the ground a fifth time, then didn’t collapse. The first time he’d attempted even a single pushup, he’d have to rest. Davrah nodded in approval. “Good. Next time, we do six. Now, take those blades up again.” Orin was still feeling the ache in his arms, and he didn’t look forward to the next parts of the lesson. Taking up the daggers, standing the same way he did before, Orin was about to strike when Davrah held up a hand. “Slowly,” the Akalak instructed. So, Orin brought his left arm up and his right arm across at a snail’s pace. Unsurprisingly, it worked. Davrah nodded. “Good. Again. Slightly faster this time.”

So Orin went slightly faster, and it still worked. Then Davrah told him to speed it up again. And again. And again. Until finally, Orin brought his left blade up and his right blade across and didn’t encounter any difficulty at all. Amazed at his progress, Orin turned to Davrah. “What happened? What changed,” the chef asked excitedly?

Davrah grinned. “You slowed it down.”

Orin shook his head. “I don’t understand.”

Davrah nodded. “Of course you don’t. I’ll explain. Now, when you first started learning how to fight, did you rush into everything headlong, or did you learn the technique.”

Orin frowned. “Technique, of course. But…”

Davrah held up a hand, forestalling whatever else Orin was going to say. “So, this is just like that. You’re learning from scratch, essentially. Have to retrain your body. Do it back like you did then.

Orin supposed that made a great deal of sense. But it was frustrating. After all the hard work that the cook had put into honing his skill with his blades, apparently none of that counted when Orin tried to use both at once. Surely, the fact that either hand was decent enough wasn’t enough to mitigate this particular problem. So, grudgingly Orin replied, “I’ll go back to basics.” Apparently, he would have a lot of relearning to do if he was ever going to be proficient at the art of dual wielding.

Davrah gave him an excited grin. “Excellent. Sometimes you are very slow for a smart pupil, and you move faster than you should.” Leaving Orin to puzzle out that rather perplexing statement, Davrah went to the weapons racks and selected two iron staves. Oh shyke. While Orin had worked with the heavier form of the weapon before, he didn’t have much experience, and with his arms already tired out from his push-ups, this was going to be a miserable training session. As Davrah handed Orin one of the staves, the Akalak smiled an evil smile. Clearly he knew what he was about to put Orin through.

Davrah handed Orin the staff, and the chef winced at the weight. This was definitely not going to be one of Orin’s favorite days here at the Kendoka Sasaran. Still, if he couldn’t even hold the iron staff in a practice setting her was never going to be able to use it when he actually needed to. So, he didn’t complain, didn’t even say a word. The Akalaks here, Davrah included, seemed more impressed when Orin remained silent in the face of their torture, as he was considered most like an Akalak at that point.

Davrah, for his part, seemed positively giddy at the upcoming part of the training. “Alright, we’re going to do a basic block pattern. I show you, you copy.” With that, Davrah picked up his staff, bringing it parallel to the floor, before raising it over his head and a little to the front of him. “Overhead block.” The Akalak kept it there, before bringing it down. Orin braced himself, and then lifted his staff off the ground. Immediately he could feel the strain in his muscles, but he gritted his teeth, and thrust the staff above his head. This caused even more pain, and Orin was really paying much attention to his form or his grip. He just wanted this ordeal to be over.

Unfortunately, apparently that meant that Davrah had quite a bit to criticize in Orin’s stance. Placing his staff on the floor, the Akalak began walking around Orin, adjusting the chef’s body as the trainer saw fit. “Feet wider apart.” Orin obligingly slid them out more. “Your grip is wrong. Both hands should slide under when you raise it above your head.” Orin shifted his left hand, which hand been doing an overhand grip, to the bottom, which did ease the strain in his arms, but only slightly. “Keep your back straight and your hips tucked under you.” Orin put his spine in line with his pelvis. “Hand farther apart.” Orin walked out his fingers until they were shoulder with.

Throughout all these instructions, he kept the staff above his head, despite the burning sensation in his arms. He was tough enough to keep going through it, even if it was highly uncomfortable and Orin really just wanted it to end. Still, Davrah had not given the chef any indication that the staff was to be lowered, and at least staying here in this position meant that the overhead block stance was now getting locked into his body, albeit almost against his will. Still, just as Davrah had explained, whenever starting a new skill, or even, Orin supposed, whenever someone started to teach a new skill, it was always necessary to slow it down and teach the basics first. It was true of the occasional cooking lessons Orin gave and it was true of learning combat as well, it seemed.

Finally, Davrah seemed pleased with Orin’s progress, and gave Orin the sign that the chef could lower his weapon. “Good. I want you to do that every day.”

Orin stared at the Akalak, aghast. “Every single day?”

Davrah’s eyes hardened, as they did whenever one of his pupils was being particularly belligerent. “Every day. Or is that too much for you?” Orin shook his head, now wanting to alienate Davrah further. The Akalak grinned. “Good. Now let me tell you why it must be every day.” Pointing first at the staff, then at Orin, Davrah told Orin, “This is very heavy. And you are very weak.” Orin thought about protesting, but since it was an entirely accurate statement, he didn’t really have many grounds to object. “Not only will doing this exercise every day make the reaction instinctual when you actually have to block with it, it will also strengthen you up enough so that you won’t have to drop your weapon in the first few chimes of a fight because it’s too much weight for you to handle effectively. Understood?”

Orin nodded, ashamed of his earlier outburst. All that made sense, and it had been variations on thoughts that Orin himself had been having. It had just seemed like quite a bit of work for something that Orin was never really going to be all that good at. Still, Davrah seemed happy enough. “I’ll take staff now. We’ll continue with it later. For now, pick up your daggers, and reverse the move we did earlier.” Doing as Davrah ordered, Orin settled into a position where his right blade was below his left arm, and pointed outward, while his left blade was held normally. He was about to launch full speed into the strike, when he recalled everything that he’d just been told. Sighing, Orin instead, moved as slowly as a snail, until he completed moving his left blade across and his right blade up.

Davrah smiled. “See? Not so bad. At least once you learn something you remember it.”

Orin was too tired to actually respond to the Akalak’s comment. His arms felt so weak that Orin was almost afraid that he was going to drop his daggers, which weighed almost nothing compared to the staff. Still, he preserved, and swung his two wooden blades repetitively, a little bit faster each time, until it felt as it was going to get for now.

Both Orin and Davrah were pleased by this development. Davrah didn't even have any notes for the chef this time. “Alright, put those down then shake your arms out. Should make them feel a little better.” Davrah demonstrated, first shaking out one arm, then transferring the staff, the other. Orin followed suit. While he did that, Davrah went on to show Orin the best exercise. “Now we’ll move on to side blocks.” Picking the staff up, Davrah held it parallel to his body as opposed to the ground this time. Then he thrust it to first the right and outward, twisting it slightly to keep his grip, then to the left. Handing the staff back to Orin, Davrah grinned. “Your turn.”

Again, Orin’s exhaustion made it impossible for him to come up with a witty response, or a response at all. Instead, he simply wearily accepted the iron staff back from the Akalak. Lifting it up this time was slightly easier than it had been when Orin had been trying to lift it overhead, although it still hurt. Still, Orin grunted with the effort, not caring that it was probably a sign of weaknessWithout even bothering to try and make it graceful, or pretty, Orin shoved the staff out in the direction that Davrah had. It was accompanied by another grunt.

Davrah frowned. “No no no. Wrong, all wrong.” Orin sighed, but froze, awaiting Davrah’s corrections. He really didn’t know how much more of this that he could take. “Slide your left leg back.” Orin did, and the stance did feel more stable. “Okay. Now both your hands are in an overhead grip. You have to put your top hand in an underhand grip.” Taking the staff away, Davrah showed Orin what he’d done wrong. “See? The problem with this is that when you try and switch sides, you have to flip it all the way over.” The Akalak flipped the staff over to show why this was a particular problem, and Orin agreed that it was problem not the most efficient method. Then, Davrah switched his left hand to a different grip. “This is called split grip. And it lets you do this.” When switching the side he was guarding this time, all Davrah had to do was bring the staff back to center, and then tilt it in the opposite direction. Orin agreed that it appeared significantly looked significantly easier than whatever Orin had been doing. “Got it?” Davrah asked patiently.

“Got it,” Orin replied, the words tired.

“Good. And this time, don’t just go through the motions. I want to see actual effort from you!” Softening his voice, Davrah explained, “If you push past what you think are your limits a little bit every day, then you’ll get strong in no time.

Orin nodded, even though he really didn’t know how much effort he had to give. Still, he took the staff back without complaint. This time holding the iron in the proper way, Orin lifted it off the ground with a groan. Then, shifting his weight to the balls of his feet, Orin thrust the staff to the right and away from him, moving his left leg back as he did. Even though the pain was no less, and Orin didn’t exactly do it quickly, it felt better in his body. Bringing the staff back to center, and his foot as well, Orin repeated the movement, this time to the left, with his right leg placing itself behind him. This was even worse than the movement to the right, but Orin gave it everything he had left. The iron seemed to grow heavier by the tick, and Orin was just trying not to drop it.

Davrah nodded. “Not perfect, but it’s acceptable for now.” Seeing that the chef needed a break, the Akalak took back the staff with ease. Orin felt a little resentful that the trainer showed no signs of strain from holding it, but then again, Akalaks were significantly stronger than humans were, even without the extensive training that Davrah had no doubt undergone. “I’ll talk for a bit. Until you get a bit of strength back.” Orin wanted to cry. He’d thought that he was done for the day, but apparently, there was more work to be done.

Still, the chef shook out his arms, willing to listen to Davrah in the hopes that he’d actually muster up the energy to get more use out of them. The Akalak spoke, letting Orin just recover. “Now, needing to hold your weapon properly is one reason why we’re trying to make those muscles grow. But there’s more to it.” Orin wasn’t surprised, since if it had just been a problem of weight, then he could likely just use a wooden staff and not have to worry about all this extra work.

Davrah wasn’t done explaining however. “The stronger your opponent is, the harder he hits. Conversely, the stronger you are, the stronger you hit. If your opponent is much stronger – and I’m afraid most opponents you face will be much stronger, unless you work very hard at this – then his, or her, I suppose, blows will be incredibly difficult to block.” Davrah paused to let that fact sink in. It made sense, and Orin nodded for the Akalak to continue, since surely that wasn’t the whole point. “Now, if the opponent is that much stronger, then even if you manage to block his attack, his blow will have so much force, that it’ll probably stagger you.” Orin titled his head, confused. He was unfamiliar with the term. Davrah, seeing this, clarified, “Make you lose your balance.” That made much more sense to Orin, and the understanding must have shown on his face, as Davrah went on. “Now, being staggered will make you lose your footwork, and that spells disaster in a fight, as I’m sure you know. But if you’re strong enough, then you’ll be able to stagger your opponent, giving you an instant advantage!” That wasn’t a revelation to Orin, but he’d never heard it put that way, and it made an awful lot of sense.

Clearly deciding that Orin had spent enough time stationary, Davrah held out the staff to the chef. Assessing his body, though, Orin shook his head. “I'm sorry. I think that's it for today.” Hanging his head ruefully, Orin added, “I think this is an instance where my mind is stronger than my body.”

Davrah regarded Orin, until finally nodding. The Akalak seemed satisfied with Orin’s response. “Pushing slightly past the limits to train is good,” Davrah began. “But knowing when to yield in the face of the inevitable, so you can live and fight another day, is also important, maybe even more so. The only thing a warrior cannot improve from is death.” Orin thought that was a rather morbid way to discuss the subject, but didn't challenge the fighting instructor.

Beckoning Orin to the side of the Sasaran, out of the way, Davrah replaced all the weapons they'd used as Orin limped over to the designated spot. Knowing what was coming next, Orin bent in half as far as he could, leaning his upper body forward and keeping his knees locked. While Orin couldn't quite touch the floor with his hands, he was close. He immediately felt the burn in the back of his legs. Staying in that position for about a chime, Orin finally announced, “I’m ready,” and then braced himself for the special kind of torture that was coming next.

Soon enough, the chef felt a pressure on his back, as Davrah placed two hands there. Trying not to tense up, Orin felt himself slowly pushed farther into the stretch. The chef hissed in pain when the ache in his legs grew too much, and Davrah eased up the pressure just slightly. In this new position, Orin’s fingertips barely touched the ground.

I deeply regret my life decisions. Apparently, there was a great degree of communication among the combat and strength trainers in the city of Riverfall, which Orin supposed made sense, as many individuals, especially among the Akalaks, trained in both the Tuvya Sasaran and the Kendoka Sasaran. Apparently, one of the trainers and the Tuvya Sasaran had seen Orin stretching and practicing a few cartwheels, mostly to see if he could still do them. Apparently, this Akalak had decided that the chef was quite flexible and nimble - for a human, of course - and that Orin should work even harder at it. In fact, the Akalaks felt it should be a regular part of the chef’s training regime regardless of which Sasaran Orin was training at. This news had, in a rather roundabout way, Orin thought, managed to make its way to Davrah, who had accepted it with glee. Too much glee, in Orin’s opinion, but unfortunately, the chef’s opinion did not count in the slightest in the Sasarans.

Even if he wanted to, even if he hadn’t been weak and tired, Orin wasn’t going to be able to exit the forward bend until Davrah released him, so Orin tried to ease into the stretch. It helped with a bit of the burning sensation, but Orin couldn’t help but sigh with relief when Davrah finally let him go from the excruciatingly painful stretch. Still, even then Orin was loath to exit it, since what was coming next was even worse than the forward bend.

Still, if Orin didn’t move, he had a sneaking suspicion that Davrah would make him move, so he stood up with a groan. The chef opened his mouth to protest any more work today, but Davrah beat him to the punch. “Now Orin, it’s your favorite – maybe second favorite, after push-ups.” That was so far from the truth that Orin had to glare at Davrah, which only seemed to encourage the Akalak further.

But still, Orin obligingly put his arms up in the air, even though his muscles screamed in protest. They’d been practicing back bends, for reasons unknown to Orin. It didn’t exactly appear to be a skill that would be useful in a fight. Whatever the reason, at the end of every workout Davrah would make Orin attempt it. Even today, when Orin didn’t think he would be able to support his weight even if he did make it all the way to the ground without falling.

Still, he started leaning back, arms above his head, fingers pointed slightly towards each other. Eventually, reaching the point where he usually fell over, Orin paused, hesitating. He didn’t think today was going to be the day when he succeeded. Seeing the chef frozen, Davrah moved forward. “Come. For one day, one day only, I help you on the way down.” Placing a hand on the small of Orin’s back, the Akalak guided Orin through the rest of the bend, until finally Orin assumed the arched position. Then, staying there for a few ticks, which was all Orin could handle, the Akalak helped him lower himself on the ground.

Orin stayed there, panting. He didn’t know if he could even get up, but luckily Davrah didn’t seem inclined to press the issue. The Akalak leaned against the wall, smiling. Staring blankly at him, Orin asked, “What’re you so happy about.”

Davrah’s smile widened. “My pupil is progressing fast. What’s not to be happy about?” For the first time in who knew how long, Orin felt a warm glow spread through his chest. The chef was, surprisingly, content. He was not exactly happy, but he was pleased with the state of the world. While Orin had a long road of recovery ahead of him, this was a start. Davrah finished off by saying, “You did good, today, even by Akalak standards. Next time you do better,” and with that the trainer walked off. Still, Orin didn’t mind. He was actually feeling hopeful about the next session. Closing his eyes, Orin whispered a prayer. “Thank you, Priskil, for this small blessing you have bestowed on your humble servant.” Then, Orin somehow levered himself off the ground and started the long process of walking home.
