Character Concept

Alun, though he is loathe to admit it, is an Eypharian through and through. He is proud, dramatic, haughty, and relishes drama and gossip. He adores vanity, entertainment, and displays of skills of all kinds. He also enjoys research and investigation, enjoying the process of learning as much as he enjoys applying it.

However, he has always felt alienated by Eypharian society. On one hand, he is expected to become the best, most perfect being he could possibly be, but on the other hand, he is automatically relegated to a second class citizen by a mistake of birth. Because of this, he has sought to escape the narrow confines and expectations, wishing to set out into the greater world where he can live his life free of the confines that have defined his life so far.

His ambition is to research the structure and manipulation of djed, to plumb the depth and breadth of how djed moves through the world in its entirety.

Character History

Alun is the son of a caravan trader, and spent his childhood in his family home in Anhatep or helping his father on the road. His father bears 6 arms, and his mother 4. He is the middle child of three sons, and is the only one to bear 4 arms. Because of this, even though he has never been exactly neglected, or abused, he has always been acutely aware of his second rate status in comparison to his bothers, and his father. In contrast to his brothers, who have been groomed to be tradesmen and politicians, he has been tied to the family business as a trader, a profession that carries too little prestige for his ambitions, and which doesn't match his character and disposition.

He narrowly avoided this fate when his interest was piqued by a caravan guardsman, who threw rock and fire around by magic. Later that night, Alun sought to learn the secret of the guardsman who could command the forces of nature. There, he learned the secrets of reimancy, and the dangers and opportunities presented by magic. Realizing something that he could surpass his brothers in, he seized upon the chance to advance his station and bribed the guard into initiating him into reimancy. To his frustration, he was told that he would have to wait a week while he was educated on the dangers of magic, overgiving, the environmental dangers of reimancy, the danger of the sweet whispers, and all the other pitfalls inherent to the manipulation of djed. Finally, he was initiated into reimancy and undertook training in its art, hiding it away from the expectations and machinations of his parent, hoping it to be something that could be solely his, separate from the duties he now carried, until the day he could separate from his parents. However, he was discovered one night while practicing his reimancy, and trapped, demonstrated his skill with reimancy to his parents. They of course were overjoyed, and took charge of his education, hiring a special tutor who could advance him along his journey in magic. Through his tutor, he learned nader-canoch, glyphing, and voiding.

Growing older and expected to be independent, he decided to travel far away from the rigid social structures of Ahnatep, someplace where he could truly be exceptional instead of second class. He informed his parents that he would be traveling to the city of Lahvit, city of light and magic, but in secret made plans to travel to the opposite end of the world, to the citadel of Sahova, city of death and magic, in order to seek his destiny.
