Mostro Mirrorsbane

Appearance

Race: Human
Gender: M
Age: 25
Birthday: 15th, Spring, 492 AV
Birthplace: Syliras

Appearance: Aesthetics weren't kind to Mostro when he was born, even less as he grew up. His body is noticeably deformed, even from afar. It is quite hard not to notice the limping and the hump on his hunched back on first sight. Mostro's black eyes are uneven, and the left one is never as open as the right one. His eyebrows are thick and bridge together aggressively at the top of his hooked, meaty nose. Cracks aren't hard to find on his fat lips, and if he dares to show his teeth, yellow, uneven pebbles are what they'll most likely resemble. Occasionally, Mostro's unkempt, dark hair lets a bang slide to the front of one his eyes, particularly if he stares at the ground for too long.

As expected of a hunchback, Mostro very rarely runs into people shorter than him. This isn't to say he is not intimidating, however. Appearance aside, Mostro is quite robust on the arms and hands, he looks quite capable of throwing a punch.

Character Concept

Mostro is a hunchback who owes many bad memories to his ghastly appearance. Not only does he believe that his parents abandoned him for that one reason, but he has also been bullied and insulted often because of it. While he acts like he has come to terms with his own ugliness, he still feels quite insecure about his inner self, particularly his value as a person. Quite acquainted with tales of "beauty on the inside", his greatest fear is finding out that his inner version is as repulsive as the outer one.

Since his youth, to compensate for his looks and seemingly less able body, Mostro has tried to be productive in any way he can. Hardworking and determined, the boy quickly learned to disregard his own well-being if it meant a job well done, regardless of the reward. His interests in philtering and herbalism came from a sudden idea of curing his own affliction through a potion, which brought him to a philterer's shop where his life as an assistant began.

Despite striving for self-improvement, Mostro quite often struggles with socialization, sounding crude and grumpy more out of self-defense than actual desire to push others away. Years of rejection gave him very thick skin to most physical insults, but Mostro can feel particularly vulnerable and obsessive towards his own shortcomings and failures

Character History

Mostro was abandoned in The Welcome Home very early in his life. Too early, in fact, to remember anything prior to that. Whoever left him there left behind little to let Mostro even guess about their identity.

As an orphan, while he grew up, Mostro was often in scuffles with other kids. Most began with teasing or insult trades, but after a while, exchanges of looks also did the trick. Of course, it was much easier to rally behind someone like you than someone like Mostro, which meant he was outnumbered and beaten every time it actually came to blows.

Eventually, Mostro was told to spend his playtime in the kitchen, just so he would be somewhere without fighting. He wasn't any guiltier than the other kids. It was just easier to dispose of one troublesome element than to do so about all the others. There, he helped the lunch lady cook meals for the children who sneered at his presence. Said lady was also the closest thing Mostro had to a friend, despite the circumstances.

When the time came for Mostro to leave the orphanage, he had no place to go and no way to make a living. It was as if the ground had opened up beneath his feet, and now he was expected to fly. Most of his days were spent looking for either shelter, work, or both. Besides random odd jobs that required little to no expertise, it was hard to find something to do that would pay off. Double that for an untravelled orphan. Triple that for a deformed hunchback.

It was only during a sleepless night after another weak day that Mostro thought about curing himself of his one curse, his one barrier, the one root of all his problems. An antidote! Surely someone would be skilled enough to treat a mishapen body. Or so he thought.

The first philterer he found promptly declared the feat impossible. The second said that if he could do such a thing, he would have retired a long time ago. The third kicked him out of the shop before he could even say a word. After a while, the outcomes started repeating themselves. Eventually, one philterer stood out from the rest. He did not say he could do it. In fact, he explained no one in the city was probably good enough to do it. The prospect, however, fascinated the old man. The fact that he gave it more than a minute's thought was already impressive enough. After a moment of meditation, he came back to himself with a sharp, quick answer. "No. I don't think it is possible."

Mostro, in despair, started sobbing. Not because the man had declared it impossible, but because he had brought his hopes up enough for him to think anything else would happen. At first, the philterer felt reluctant to comfort Mostro, but slowly he gained some pity on the lad, and even dared to hear his story and motivations.

The whelp's sadness slightly shook the old man. He decided to go back on what he had said earlier, temptingly. "It might not be impossible for you..." Mostro's knowledge about anything related to potions or herbs was nonexistent, and he did not bother to conceal his ignorance. Emboldened (a bit foolishly, perhaps) by empathy for the hunchback, the old man chose to give him a chance as his assistant, and thus Mostro's first step into philtering and herbalism was taken.
