Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

It had been an interesting stretch of days. The man with no name had come from the belly of the world in a pile of filth and fear. He had made friendly acquaintances and apparent old friends. The world was new again but some things kept feeling familiar. The sting of past mistakes and never knowing what was made navigating day to day decisions all the more difficult. A recent encounter revealed what might be his name -Azmere. The scarred man felt awkward saying it, even in his head.

With a slight limp in his left leg, the man strolled along the upper tier of this city and was given a wide berth due to his appearance. The large canine companion that stayed just off his left hip also attributed to this gracious personal space. Since the weather was warm, his wounded leg did not hurt quite as bad as on the damp days and this gave the warrior hope. In fact, this was one of the first times that he could remember not wishing to carrying his weapons about on his errands and wanderings. A dagger slipped into his belt and a kukri in its sheath were all he bore aside from his worn leather pants, beat up leather boots and a mostly opened white linen shirt. His windemarks were covered by sleeves and the shirt helped keep most of his other scars covered such as the wolf bite and most of the recessed squares.

One thing that was never covered was the left side of his face and neck. Burned in a freak display of the strange things that happen in this world, the man’s potentially attractive face stops at his nose. From his forehead down to his collarbone and back t his ear are rippled with the scars of an incident he cannot recall. A solid mass of tissue sits marred and immobilized around a golden eye that was once blue like the one on the right. When he feels threatened, the vagabond has taken to tilting his head so that the scarred portion of his face is presented. There are mixed reactions but the indigenous population is a race of warriors raised by warriors and sired by warriors so the scars do not bother them. The scurrying population of mixed races they dominate, however, tend to be leery of one so battered by the world.

The man and his dog made their way along the road to a wide open area nestled among huge structures of rock and tall trees. To say it was open might be considered incorrect, however, since the entire space is covered in tents and tables, carts and people all trying to make a deal, find the perfect item or get rich. The blue and gold stare narrowed. He couldn’t recall why he had come this way but something told him that it was necessary. A huff from furry jowls reminded him of the errand. His right hand shook slightly as it moved from the handle of the kukri between the ears of the dog. He scratched and rubbed then slowly lowered his head to meet the lightning blue gaze of the creature. “You’re probably hungry, eh big fella?” The scarred man spoke the language of the horse people but he did not quite recognize that fact.

His gaze was dichromatic but also bore a significant mutation - an enigma within an anomaly. Each pupil was rimmed with bursts of color that shone out like stars. Several colors of vivid contrast gave the stare an eerie presence that would sometimes appear as if the colors moved. Such detail had to be gained at close distance. The man was scruffy with an unshaven face and a beard that was as straggly as vegetation on a rock ridge. His hair was black with a filtering of grey fibers that hung down into his face, around his ears and down his neck. A few braids were knotted along the left side and a piece of fabric; old, thin and faded, was tied in as well. The strange man with shaking hands limped along towards the smells of a person who intended to make a living by smoking some kind of meat.

When the duo approached the cart, a few patrons hustled off to one side and gawked before moving on. The shaking hand reached into a pocket and produced a few coins. “I’d like a few pieces of your food.” The vendor watched for a moment. He had bright blue skin, deep purple eyes and thick black hair that was neatly pulled back into a slick ponytail. He was big, muscular and looked to be bored. He studied the coins, then the man and then the canine. He held up his big hand and nodded then held up four fingers. The buyer looked into his palm and saw six coins but they were not all the same. He looked back up to the seller. “Four light or four dark?” The man looked like he was about to argue but instead, he produced a silver-rimmed Miza to show. The scarred man smiled with the right side of his face and fetched the proper amount from his coin purse. He paid the man and took two skewers of meat that were handed to him. He turned with his companion and they began to leave the bazaar with a slow pace as each took his turn to nibble upon the snack.

Naali
28th of Summer, 518 AV
15th Bell

Naali had spent the day trying to find work. The type of work she was being offered was a bit too personal for her taste. So she had stripped off her dress, hid it in the rocks and changed forms. As an Arctic Fox, she splashed in the water to cool off and spent time shading her self in the coolness of the rocks. She had managed to get a crawl space big enough to get in and turn around by digging with her claws and paws. The spot let her hide and watch people as they went about their lives. She had been told that crime did not exist in the city of Riverfall. She believed it till she saw some young people picking the pockets of a merchant coming to get a bite of lunch. It was a three person team, a runner, a hand off and a drop. For some people it is a way of life. To Naali it was mostly a game to be played. Kits would steal food from each other. Growing up, Naali had stolen a chicken or two. She had been stealing herbs from the gardens around town to cook with. She made a Vole stew, for Nia with fresh onions, carrots, rosemary, and a couple that smelled and tasted good. The woman of the house seemed to enjoy the stew till they asked what it was.

Naali’s attention is drawn to the man with the dog. People that were nice to their dogs were good people in Naali’s mind. She couldn’t help herself as she started to slip out of the hidey-hole in the rocks. He was sharing food with the big grey dog and her mouth started to water. Slinking under carts and between legs, Naali followed the pair. She noticed that the dog was well trained. He waited for his turn to eat and stayed close to Azmere. This was good, that means that she could use the dog’s nature to help her. If I try with the dog on his limp side, I could get the dog to knock him down or have him delay the dog. Experience has taught Naali that a dog can outrun a fox. But she had learned some tricks too. She could out climb and out jump a dog. She had once cleared a fence about the height of a man’s head. A chasing dogs can make her jump fairly high.

Hiding under a woman’s skirt as the woman talked to a friend, her heart raced as she prepared. As Azmere bent down to feed the dog, she made a bounding leap. Using her claws, she grabbed the pant legs of his clothes on his bad leg and lunged for the dagger. She had been trying to get the sheath and the dagger and she missed. The dagger came free of the sheath cleanly, as she held the handle in her mouth. She hoped the dog would play his part. Like a dart spiraling towards a dart board, she twisted and used her momentum to flee. She ran through peoples legs, under carts, through their wheels till she came to the rocks. A couple of good bounds she was up top, she ran for the road then looked for a storm sewer or drain to escape through.

[Zhongjie Warren] A Lovely Day for a Walk (Naali)

It had been a pleasant day so far for the wanderer. The morsels he tasted were thick with smoke but tender with its own juices and flavors. The man chewed and limped along with his eyes closed from time to time as the splashes of flavor tickled his mouth and the weight of wholesome food hit his belly. The canine must have agreed because he wasn’t making any noise aside from the slap of his jowls and gums as he munched on his portion. There was a whole lot of life taking place today. People were shopping, kids were playing and young people were courting one another. All walks of the city gathered here because it seemed to be a good way to make a living or to find exactly what one needed.

A half smile cracked on the unscarred portion of his face. Such was the nature of one who had been wrecked. The vagabond did not remember why his face looked the way that it did but he couldn’t really hide it or change the composition of his face. There was an innocent process which took place inside one’s head when he had no memories. Observations were pure and untainted by bias but there was also a great deal of blank stares. The families in the market could be contemplating plans for building to another phase of life or raising their kids to take over a family business. The vendors were figuring out strategies or calculating how much more one needed to save before he or she could leave to pursue a dream of a different color.

When the first contact of little claws dug into his leg, the man reacted with a shout. He twisted but his leg buckled into his companion. The large dog’s body caught his master’s weight enough that the scarred man didn’t tumble to the ground but not fast enough to provide a base that he could use to prevent the theft. In truth, the man was going to just let the blade go when his hands discovered what had been taken. It was the big dog with blue eyes that started the pursuit. Shouts and cries went up as the large animal tore through the market after his quarry. With a sigh, the man knew what he had to do. He took a deep breath and began to jog in the general direction where both creatures had gone.

The warrior pumped his arms and legs in rhythm with one another. The left leg hurt with every impact, pain radiating out from the core of scar tissue in his thigh. He did his best to twist and control his body as he slipped between the bodies of others but there were a few instances where he dropped a shoulder or knee into a bystander. More than once, he was called something that he’d never heard before but it sounded very rude. His multicolored stare finally landed upon the big grey canine as he stood at the edge of the Warrens looking back towards his master and ahead down the road.

The man locked upon the position of the dog and tried to do something his body was untrained to handle. There was a series of rocks stacked upon other rocks which acted as something like a wall to separate areas within the market. The warrior jumped in stride and threw his hands out in front of him to catch the top ledge. He figured it was easier to go over than around. His fingers bit into the stone and his shoulders and back instantly engaged to bring him up over the ledge. Muscles burned as they worked hard to lift his mass. His boots dug in to help steady his weight while his biceps trembled with the strain. He managed to get up and pulled his legs over then dropped down in a crouch. Here was his mistake. While scaling the structure saved him time, the landing sent a blast through his legs that rattled the scar tissue in his thigh. The instant ache made his entire left side shiver and he knew he could not run for a few chimes.

Reduced to walking, the man pressed on with a grimace at each limping step. He finally reached his companion and gave a nod with a click of his tongue against the back of his teeth. THe dog responded by turning and pursuing the little thief up on to the road. Grey’s large form lumber quickly to close the gap on the fox who held the blade in its mouth. The road offered no shelter. There were no nooks or crannies where the smaller creature could hide especially given the powerful nose of a hunting dog. There was the city itself. Hilly, full of buildings and people, the physical layout of Riverfall could prove to be a very efficient form of camouflage should the sticky-fingered thing manage to elude the rightful owner of the blde and his canine companion.

[Zhongjie Warren] A Lovely Day for a Walk (Naali)

Naali

As the grey dog starts to close the gap, Naali realizes that she needs to do something to shake the dog from her tail. She knew that she would not be able to hide from the dog's nose when it was getting close. She knew that she needed to do something the dog couldn’t do, climb. As the grey dog’s powerful mouth snapped on Naali’s tail, she makes a right turn and rolls, pushing off the dog and throwing herself through a picket fence into a private garden. She knew that the fence would keep her out of the dog’s reach till the gate got opened. Drips of blood fall from her tail. That meant that she would need bandages when she changed into her human form too. She loved her tail. This was now getting serious as the dog had a taste of her blood. Turning left at the corner of a shed, she tries to hide for a second and think. She sees a tall tree near the back part of the fence, so she starts to climb it, trying to hide from the dog and its owner. She knew the blood would tell them where she went.

When she got up in the branches, she leaped for the roof of the building next door. Sliding on the roof, she slowed her pace down till she found a chimney edge where she could hide and lick her tail till it stopped bleeding. Naali though blood tasted fairly good until it was your own.

After a while, Naali listened for the sound of her pursuers to stop. She then listened for a little bit longer. There was no bow shot made at her. No sound of feet coming across the roof. So she ran the roof and jumped for the tree. Being cousins to felines is sometimes helpful. Landing on the branch without falling off was a bonus. “That part went,” She thought to herself. Like a squirrel, she watches for any movement towards her. If she sees something she is prepared to scamper again. Then she climbs down the tree tail first. Quickly she starts to head back towards to retrieve her clothing going a different route, but laying low and staying under things for cover.

[Zhongjie Warren] A Lovely Day for a Walk (Naali)

Azmere found his way along the main road which cut across the upper tier of Riverfall. It was easy to follow since it was so wide and having a hound along to pick up trails certainly helped. The duo worked their way along at a slow pace. The man allowed his dog to follow scents and unseen trails while he kept his eyes up, the gaze of day and night kept a vigilant watch on shadows and trees that swayed in the summer breeze. He felt like there was more he could be doing though he hadn’t a clue as to what that might be.

The big canine locked onto something near a building that looked like it was as old as the cliffs themselves. The scarred man took a few moments to admire such sound craftsmanship. He was not an artist nor a builder that he could say. In truth, he had no idea what he used to be but his inclinations never fell into the categories of creation or art. The wanderer was so enrapt by the massive sculpture out front that he nearly missed the big grey animal disappearing around the corner.

The dog had followed the trail but quickly realized his master no longer followed so he returned to the side of the marred warrior. He gave a gentle nudge to rouse the man from his stupor; a cold nose to the open hand worked perfectly. This jolted the man who revealed his surprise in a startled, wide-eyed look that plastered itself to his face. The multi-colored stare looked to the creature then followed it as the big head turned and led them both around the corner. The dog ran back and forth sniffing at the bricks but a large group of sweaty akalak warriors had just passed through and muddled the canine’s ability to accurately track the little thief.

The big oaf whimpered and ran back and forth several times to the side of his master with eyes that searched for acceptance -or punishment, the man wasn’t sure. He felt something stirring within him- a sudden desire to find this vagrant who had accosted him at the Warrens. It wasn’t about the dagger. It was about being useful and the ability to look after one’s self. The man’s eyes hurt-burned even so he shut them tight and looked down. Thumb and finger pressed on either side of his nose’s bridge to help alleviate the tension. This strange burning feeling made him feel like he was on edge - even invigorated but the man didn’t like the way it settled.

The dog rubbed up against his leg and the man opened his eyes. What he saw frightened him - so much so that he stumbled backwards until he came to rest against the building. “What in the world is this madness?” Trembling hands clutched at the stone wall for support as a look of sheer terror climbed up and down the right side of his face. Everywhere he looked, there were colors. Some floated in the air in streaks, others were bound against objects and places of the road. The big old companion muzzled up to his master and drew the man’s gaze. The dog appeared to be on fire with tongues of color that were brighter than anything the scarred warrior owned. He quickly shut his eyes again and tried to calm his rapid heartbeat.

Breath. He told himself. Just breath. That’s exactly what he did. A hardset to his jaw and his eyelids welded closed, the man focused on counting the length of inhales and tried to match the duration with his exhales. After what felt like a long time, the pressure in his sinuses had not been relieved but his breathing had regulated enough that the vagabond felt the strength to try again. He stood then braced himself against the wall and slowly opened his eyes. As the irises adjusted to the light, his focus quickly went back to all of the streams of color that filled the space before him. The bands of painted light stretched as far as he could see and he had no way to make sense of them. Slowly and with a shaking hand, he reached out and touched the color that clung to the dog....nothing happened.

The man was emboldened by this and moved away from the wall slowly. It was still a lot to take in, all of the colors being thrown around everywhere, but he started a very languid and intentional walk from one to the next. It wasn’t for several chimes until the man noticed the colors falling away from his dog. The same hues that engulfed the hunter seemed to just hang in the air. Even though it hurt, he maintained as much focus as he could. The man suddenly had an idea. He moved to the corner where the dog had turned around several times in his excitement. The big beast came back over and his nose went straight to the street. The hound kept it down and followed the scent along the edge for a while. The man with two faces narrowed his gaze and began to sift through all of the bands of color that hung before him. The dog was clearly on the trail but then a mass of color shifted laterally and obscured the original trail.

The man slowly moved along through the bright mess and paused immediately on the other side. He had so much information to process that he had to stop for a few moments and close his eyes. During this time, the dog with the light blue eyes came across the large barrier of colors and settled in on his hind legs next to the human that he trusted. The man reached out and took hold of his furry friend then scratched his ears. Within ticks, they were both back on their feet again. The dog identified the scent and headed towards the corner where a bunch of trees sit behind a private garden. The man is eagerly in pursuit as well, his gift was the ability to see the color of the dog’s scent trail. This enabled him to redirect the canine tracker whenever he lost the scent. The man had to admit to himself that this felt natural and right. He made a mental note t give this thought more consideration after he figured out how to return his eyes to normal.

[Zhongjie Warren] A Lovely Day for a Walk (Naali)

Postby Naali on July 8th, 2018, 3:36 am

Naali

Naali changed form and gets herself dressed. She tucks the dagger inside the waste of her dress, beneath the ribbon that makes a belt and heads for the crowded part of the Zhongjie Warren. She makes sure to walk by the perfumeries and other carts that had strong smells that are irritating to animals noses. She doubles back and crosses her path multiple times. She even fakes a limp and asks a man to carry her to a bench some twenty feet away. She figures this will slow them down for a bit. She knows this because foxes tracking by scent and sound as well. She can track a vole in over two feet of snow by scent and sound alone. She knows that the man will get tired before the dog does.

Finding a shade tree, she gets a boost and climbs up about twenty feet into the branches to watch and see what happens. She sits with her back against the trunk, a leg down a branch and the other one hanging down. Not the most ladylike pose. She sits and watches the drama of those below watching the crowd. Thinking about what to do if he shows up. At least she is safe from the dog.

The path was easy to follow for a while. The scarred man limped along with less favoritism towards his good leg as the exhilaration drove his spirits up and his pain down. The dog led them about for a while but the man looked up at the direction that they were heading and found himself temporarily overwhelmed by his strange gift of sight. The scent trail marked by the color of the little thief disappeared into a huge mess of color; the perpetrator had returned to the Warrens. Smart. The man with multi-colored eyes thought to himself.

The dog was insistent and spent a good deal of time tracing back and forth, back and forth near the entrance to the Zhonghjie Warrens with its colorful tents and stalls. Painted against the movements of every living creature with mystical hues gave the man a headache. He lowered his body to one knee and closed his eyes tight, a hand came up and clamped down over his face so that his thumb and pinkie finger could apply pressure to the soft spots on the outside of his eyes. He massaged at his skull for several ticks and applied force to make sure his eyelids did not open. Too many colors. The vagabond was wondering if he could maintain any semblance of sanity should this type of vision continue. A mental debate sprang forth about the merits one might gain by removing his own eyes.

With a deep breath and a strong push to rise, the man with two faces stood straight once more. He steadied himself while maintaining the rubbing of his temples with eyes closed. A cold nose nudged his other hand and human nodded. “Yeah...why not?” He spoke to himself and the canine. Slowly, he opened his eyes. A cringe bit his face for a tick but the only colors he saw were the ones of fabric and wares in the market. The gold and blue orbs closed once more in a huge sigh of relief. He stooped and scratched at the jaw and ears of his companion then stood back up and began to use his normal sight to scour the area for any signs of the little fox. There was nothing. No people acting as if they’d seen a varmint, no vendors shouting for a thief to return a tasty treat and no dogs acting strangely. No dogs except the large grey one with bright blue eyes.

The lumbering hunter was used to the tall grasses on the steppe and even, to some extent, the cold damp of the tunnels but this was different. The city had so many sights and smells that it was easy for one to lose his way. Unaccustomed to failure, the canine resumed his tracking as soon as he deemed his master to be fine. The back and forth and not been for no reason; the nose of the hound led him to a man who was selling flowers. His big broad shoulders were a light blue but he was more portly than most of the giant blue brutes. He reached down to pet the dog and that’s when Grey reacted. He clamped his teeth together and sat down with his ears flattened a bit against his skull. It took the battle-tested man a few moments to catch up and he waved a hand in apology. “Sorry, sir. The dog’s just a bit strange.” His Pavi was all he had and it never dawned on him to use Common first.

“S’alright, lad.” A deep voice boomed from the man. “Lotta strange going around today. Why, just a few chimes ago, I watched a little red-haired thing walk back and forth like she was lost then she asked me to carry her to that bench over there.” He indicated with his massive hand then shrugged with a ‘Hn’ that was allowed to escape. “She’s not there anymore but that girl was far more peculiar than your friend here.”

The two men exchanged niceties then went back about their business. The dirty and rundown man moved along towards the bench with his dog beside him and the other went back to selling flowers. A sigh slowly drew itself from chapped lips as the scarred man lowered himself onto the bench. “Well, dog, guess I’ll have to start using my kukri more often, eh?” He reached out to scratch the animal behind its ears but the dog was sniffing furiously at the bench. The canine then planted his nose on the ground and set off following an invisible trail. With a slight smirk, the man with broken stars in his eyes got himself back on his feet and followed along. Moments later, he saw the dog sitting at the base of a tree with his ears pinned down and his mouth closed tight.

Being slower had its advantages. The amber and azure gaze could see more of the tree and quickly spotted the redheaded woman resting high, high in the branches. It was not only strange to see such a thing but the words of the flower vendor chimed in almost instantly. Add in the dog’s behavior and the man who limped ever closer did his best to put a smile on the right side of his face. He looked up to her and used one hand to shield his eyes. He called out in his normal speaking voice, a clear baritone that trembled a bit on long phrases. “Are you stuck? Can I help you get down?”

Postby Naali on July 21st, 2018, 3:52 am

Naali

Naali returns the smile then says, "I would really recommend that you climb up first. There is a beautiful view of the waterfall and the sunset sparkling in the water." She waits for a second then looks out again and swinging her free leg, "My name is Naali. I am very good at climbing trees." After a few seconds more she looks down at the man again and smiles a big smile. "Who are you and what's your dog's name?" she asks. "He really likes you and you treat him nicely," she says smiling.

Naali will watch Azmere, if he doesn't climb up the tree. She will extend her arms out for him to help her down after she gets a promise that the dog won't bite her.

The vagabond contemplated what it might take to climb that tree. It certainly didn’t feel like it would be in his wheelhouse. He was weak, dirty and had a bad limp caused by scar tissue in his left thigh. No, climbing was certainly out. The contrasting stare tilted with his head and took in more of this odd woman. Who climbs a tree in the middle of the day?[/] The answer was soon to be stated. [i]Someone who wants to see the waterfall from way over here, apparently. This brought a half smile to the man’s face and his shoulders relaxed a bit from their tension.

The man’s head hurt from all of the strange colors that flooded his eyes. He found it interesting and a bit scary that the ability seemed to not only come from somewhere within him but that it was something he could control if he focused hard enough. She asked his name. The man had enough issues so he took a moment to inhale deeply while he worked his way through a logical response. The name he’d been using seemed fitting enough so he bluntly stated “Hollow” in his normal baritone then put a hand on the big canine’s head who sat next to him. “This is Stormy.” The wanderer wanted to cringe. What a horrible made-up name! The dog didn’t seem to care. “He and I have been through a lot together.” The rough hand rubbed back and forth for a moment before both arms, thick with muscle and wrapped in leather armor up to his elbows extended upwards towards the red-haired thing.

“He’s harmless, really.” Once she reached out for him, he placed firm hands on either side of her and braced with his legs and back then hefted the woman to the ground. She was small, light and easy to move but his body reacted by channeling the added mass through a series of subtle shifts that balanced the weight of the young woman to avoid awkward bends or overburdening any fatigued muscles. “What’s your name?” The blue and golden orbs soaked up the spectacle before him and that’s when he noticed the handle of his dagger tucked beneath the ribbon which was wrapped around her waist. The man didn’t say anything right away nor did he react in any kind of expression or jerky movement. Smoothly, he placed her down and then smiled his half smile when he straightened back up. “Do you always climb trees to stare at things?”

[Zhongjie Warren] A Lovely Day for a Walk (Naali)

Postby Naali on August 3rd, 2018, 4:20 am

Naali

Naali kept smiling. She also winced a little bit as Hollow helped her out of the tree. When she was back on the ground she states, "Hello, Hollow and Stormy. My name is Naali." The concept of coming up with a fake name as was, well, foreign to her as well many other things.

Naali watches the body language and reaction of Stormy. "Climbing trees is good exercise and the waterfall is quite lovely when you do not have to look at people’s heads," she said with some delight. The fox in her still wanted to play, but the sore spot on her back also reminded her that there was a cost for that. Raiding the hen house once lets you get away. She put a playful bounced in a step on the leg away from the pain then asked, "Do you want to walk more, get something to eat or sit in the shade and watch people?" she asked with delight. "People are interesting to watch." she said. Taking his arm in almost a hug above the elbow, Naali moved to be on his bad leg side. It is in a Kelvic’s nature to be helpful. She lets him lead her.

“Smokey would give his life for you,” Naali says, “You are his pack and his alpha.”
