Race: Inarta
Caste: Avora
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Birthday: 13, Spring, 497
Birthplace: Wind Reach

Appearance:

If the Inarta had a public relations figure, it would be Reav. He stands just a jot above the average male, reaching a (typically average) 5’10”. His build is athletic but lean, with broad shoulders and slim waist, paired with lithely powerful arms and legs. Surmounting this is a face that appears to be chiseled from Mt. Skyinarta itself -- craggy, regal, and fair. A scruff of auburn beard tends to clean to his jawline and upper lip like a mass of red moss. Gleaming yet dark azure eyes sit half-hidden by the shadows of a heavy brow, set like sapphires amid the raging fire of his wild waist-length hair.

Character Concept

The flames and the shadows. The heat and the cold. The polar opposites of emotion, enhanced by the strength of Inarta blood, fused into a single person. All in all, on any given day he is certainly a rather ordinary specimen. Though nearly anywhere else would give notice to his appearance, in Mt. Skyinarta it is merely noted that he is rather handsome. It is what lay beneath the flying fiery hair and behind the dark icy eyes -- his mind.

The Heat of the Fire:

This side of Reav is the jovial, loving, and universally liked personality well known among anyone who has ever met him, and even some who haven’t. He genuinely cares for the wellbeing of others and loves life, pure and simple. Selflessness and even self-sacrifice are matters which he does not even question. Whether revelling alone on a hunt or tending to the wounds of an impetuous Yasi, there seems to be a subtle radiance to him. He recognizes the value life itself, whether his or another’s, and that in and of itself seems to be the driving factor behind his own living -- seeking to help both himself and anyone else to achieve the best life they can have. In fact, he has assisted Deks in improving their condition several times...once through arranging a marriage by subtly pushing a friend in that direction, and twice by vouching for them to become apprentices.

The Cold of the Shadow:

On the other hand, you have his more cynical side. Due to his skills in medicine, he is often present at the death of others. He’s too familiar with death...and for an Inarta, that is saying a great deal. While he knows life has value, he holds that this value can quite easily be degraded and that those who are not seeking their own ultimate state of value have no rights. Since he is seeking this for himself, that means that all who do not seek it serve one purpose -- being exploited for the good of people like himself. He can be heartless, harsh, and cruel to people in whom he doesn’t see “the spark of life.” Deks take the brunt of this, since they can serve whatever bidding he has -- if they suffer or even perish during it, they are nothing of value so it does not matter.

The Two Worlds United:

The play between these two sides results in a strange neutrality that is neutral only in the sense two opposites have been mixed to result in a generally central behavior. Reav is aware of these two aspects of his life, and usually is able to pick which side remains dominant -- more often than not, that means the side of the fire. These are not separate personalities, either -- merely different sides of the same coin.

For example, he sees all creatures as being born with something of incomparable value -- their lives. These lives are then to be preserved at all costs so that these potential lives can flourish. Anyone who wastes this value, however (something he personally determines), has stripped themselves of value. As a result, the also lose their rights. This is why his relationship with Deks is so convoluted. On the one hand, they are people too and their abilities deserve to be called out when they have potential. The average dek, however, is a living accessory, not a person, because they have forfeited their right to any value, even if it wasn’t their choice.

In short, even though he thinks of things a bit differently, he’s just like any other privileged Inarta -- somewhat self-centered, unconcerned with death yet also caring to prevent death, possessing deep passions, fiercely protective, a lover of the outdoors, and incurably curious.

Character History

Reav’s childhood was fairly typical. He knew his mother Meleir, although the position of father could have belonged to any of several potential men. Like all children, he was raised among the Yasi, an experience that, at least from his perspective, went quite well. Early on he exhibited both sides of his nature, and was usually reprimanded when he acted too coldly towards fellow Inarta. His people-minded nature was more than welcome, but the occasional surfacing of what would become the other side of his mindset. His attitude towards Deks was not so much the problem as that he indicated the same principles held true for all castes. Still, as years passed those who raised him gradually taught him to at least suppress those views, if he wouldn’t drop them entirely. That aside, things progressed normally. He was generally popular with peers of both genders, as well as having a good name among his elders. His work ethic, especially, garnered praise since he did not seek to maximize his leisure time like many youth, but rather poured himself into doing whatever he did even better than he thought he could.

About eight years ago, he was selected for an apprenticeship under a hunter Avoral by the name of Tavrov. His progression in skill with a bow was remarkable, but in the matter of actually hunting...not so much. After a hunting accident, however, his interest in medical matters consumed most of his time. Still, as he moved into manhood Tavrov supported his interests in this line for the simple reason that his motivations made sense -- The Unforgiving is brutal, and knowing how to repair the harm it can do can be just as critical to success of a hunter as his skill with a bow or woodcraft. In light of this, however, Tavrov became little more than an archery trainer, with his apprenticeship shifting to Micquel D'hanna within the Infirmary.

Currently, he retains his popularity in the social realm, commonly associating with Endals due to his occupation and their propensity for gaining injuries that benefit from his medical talents. In terms of actual skill, he is no prodigy in his fields, but has progressed much as could be expected at his age. Currently he works as an assistant in the Infirmary, tending to minor matters on his own and preparing the rest for the Doctor or Healers. House calls, too, are a matter he often handles -- treating those matters within his abilities and helping bring more severe cases to the Infirmary. In the matter of family he has had liaisons, but has not found anyone he would want to choose as a primary partner...and he either hasn’t fathered any children or the women haven’t identified him as the father. He has aspirations, of course, but these aspirations are merely a reflection of the same work mentality -- he wants to see just how far he can take his interest in impacting people’s lives.

In regards to a few extra-curricular activities of note, Reav is quite good friends with Val Imsun. This is a relationship that has blossomed largely because Val does not like going to the Infirmary, but still needs a bit of extra medical attention nowadays. Thus, the apprentice (and later assistant) was given the task of tending to the old man. Val is a talker like Reav, and the two get along rather amiably during these trips. From Val, Reav has managed to pick up a bit of Isurian as well.

The other matter of note is the discovery of his talent in Auristics. The concept of magic fascinates Reav, as do many things about the mind and body, mundane and otherwise. When a group of traders was forced to remain in WR over the winter during his later teens due to the early arrival of snowstorms, he noticed that several members of the group practiced various magical arts. Though all of them impressed and interested him, one of the members that he thought had no talents began telling him about “seeing beyond the visible.” His curious mind latched onto that idea, and in exchange for some of his wages the human taught him the basics of the magic. His tutelage ended when The Unforgiving began to thaw in the Spring, but he had established enough knowledge to put his talents to use in the Infirmary, helping to identify the ailing far better than his own skills could sometimes achieve. Though he has yet to find anyone to continue his learning, he does work on what he knows regularly, toying around with it to see what more there is to discover.

Faelian :

His heirloom is Davital, a well-crafted talon sword. The connection is simple -- this belonged to one of the people who died in the hunting accident, a young man known as Fael. They had known each other since before either could remember as Yasi, thinking of one another as brothers effectively. The death of the third Yasi had little impact on Reav -- already he was developing some of the colder mindset that realized death was natural. Fael dying in his arms, though...that traumatizes a child. The sword had been a gift from the hunter to whom Fael was apprenticed, and was Fael’s last gift to his “brother.” Though he has never really used it, largely due to abandoning that course of study, he still wears it both because it is an excellent weapon and in memory of Fael.

The sword itself is an inlaid talon sword, with a blade bearing extra work exemplified in some small hooks to catch other blades...not actually crossguards, but sufficient for their purpose. The handle is made from wood that petrified in the Sanikas River, and then inlaid just like the blade.

Housing

Location: Wind Reach

House: Darniva Commonrooms

Reav doesn’t place much personal value on his current residence. He keeps it clean, but he has almost nothing to his name. Which is fine, in his opinion, since most of his time is spent out in the wild hunting, running about tending making house calls or assisting at the Infirmary, or socializing. Thus he currently has his place stocked with merely piles of furs he uses as cushions and beds. Astoundingly comfortable and equally practical, but otherwise of little purport. Two pairs of lamps are mounted on the walls to provide light, and a small basic table sits in one corner.
