Rodel Intaercis

Appearance

Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 20
Birthday: 16th of Spring 498 A.V.
Birthplace: Lhavit
Appearance: Rodel stands about 6 feet tall and possesses a lean muscular frame from a childhood spent doing physical training. His hair is dirty brown and kept short. Most cite his deep hazel eyes as his most striking feature on an otherwise plain face, some calling them “old” or “tired,” especially when he has been having difficulty maintaining his mental composure. He wears the customary robes of the Shinya, and usually walks and moves in a reserved manner, careful not to jostle or disturb anyone. When he begins to lose control of his mental stability, his movements become more carefree and even erratic.

Character Concept

Rodel is a devoted Shinya acolyte. For him, the meditative teachings of the order are a necessity for living a normal life, as he suffers from acute visual and auditory hallucinations. Through frequent meditation, he has learned to manage them, reducing the hallucinations to a few figures—always the same ones—which he can recognize and ignore in public. Failure to maintain that control allows the hallucinations to worsen, which he avoids at all costs. He tries to ignore his condition if he can; and will exchange smiles and laughs with anybody else willing to do so. At times however, he can possess an air of solemnity and a desire to be noticed and accepted by others.

Character History

Rodel’s father died when he was very young, and while his mother was stricken with grief, she held her chin high and tried to raise her child as best as she could. Eventually though, the emotional strain of hiding her pain from Rodel triggered a mental sickness in her, the same one that lay dormant in her son. Her condition gradually worsened, and as she lost her ability to distinguish reality from hallucination Rodel was left almost entirely in his own care. His great distress at the perceived abandonment by his mother ignited the condition in him, young though he was at the tender age of eight.
The strange and horrific things Rodel saw left him scared and frantic. He hid from his mother when he could, for her own madness would sometimes cause her to strike out at him; yet he stayed near their home, since he was scared even further by the unknown and the horrors his mind conjured from the darkness. In this addled state, Rodel’s ninth birthday came and went without notice.
Eventually, a Shinya came across Rodel huddled and shivering on the street, muttering about monsters in the shadows. The Shinya patiently drew what information he could out of the child through a frustrating line of inquiry. Discovering the child’s living conditions, the Shinya sponsored him as an initiate to the order, despite a few raised eyebrows at the decision. The Shinya taught Rodel meditation, and a mastery over one’s own mind. Gradually as he learned the art, Rodel’s hallucinations began to fade, receding farther back as he grew better at meditation until they took the forms of four recurring specters. One, a thin man spouting paranoid delusions whenever he appeared. Another, a matronly woman that seemed to talk sense (though as a hallucination her words could only come from the depths of Rodel’s own mind). The third, is an imposing man that quickly stirred to anger at anyone nearby and tried to drive Rodel to the same. Finally, the last recurring hallucination was his mother. She never spoke, only stared at him with wild soulless eyes.
With more practice, even these figures appeared to Rodel less and less often, and when they did he could ignore them. As he furthered his own mental stability, Rodel did not neglect the other teachings of the order he had been brought to. He trained in the arts of combat and projection, with the aim to eventually become a full Shinya, and do his duty to repay the people who had given him his life back.
