A day at the range

Postby Uerta on March 12th, 2019, 8:38 pm

1st day of spring, year 519AV

Inhale and keep the string back as you hold your breath for a moment. Imagine the arrow hitting the target where you want it. Then you let go off the string and keep your arm steady, the arrow gliding through the air towards its target. It was a slow day and Uerta didn’t wish to leave for a hunt the first days of spring. He had little experience with traps and tracking and felt he shouldn't be a bother upon any group. Some practice with the bow however was always welcome and it was a way for him to clear his mind on bad days or when he felt annoyed.

The arrow hit the target but it wasin the fourth ring from the middle which elicited a sigh from Uerta’s nose as he raised pulled out another arrow and repeated the process. Relax as you raise the bow, pull the string back and inhale as you focus on the target. Hold your breath as you adjust the aim from the last shot and let the string go. Finally feel the tension against your arm as the string comes to a stop and you exhale. The new bow was good but he had to get used to it and soften it slightly before he felt comfortable taking it on a hunt. He did miss his old one despite how it had clearly started to show its age.
This time the arrow hit the second ring, still on the left side and Uerta nodded to himself slowly.

Another arrow was laid upon the string, he inhaled with the string pulled back before adjusting his aim once more before letting the arrow fly. Spring had started and most people were at the market right now. The first day of spring.. A new year… He was happy the winter was over since the storms got to him and he couldn’t relax for most of the season.
Third ring from the middle and this time to the right. He had overcompensated this time and he cursed himself for it in his heart as he pulled out another arrow. After placing it against the string he closed his eyes and took five deep breaths before slowly opening his eyes again. Trying to put the last three shots out of his mind but keep the experience from them.

He kept shooting in sets of three, stopping to close his eyes and trying to clear his mind from the last three shots after every third shot. He wasn’t sure why he did it but he found it had helped him when he started. Every set was different and he didn’t want them to influence another apart from improving. Just shooting blankly had led to him losing his patience and becoming more and more annoyed with each miss while this had let him group up his shots and try different things each set. So he kept shooting until he ran out of arrows and had to retrieve them.

Twelve hits and eight misses was the result of the first twenty shots, none had hit the center and most had been to the left side between the fifth and third rings. He was not pleased with this but he knew it was his own fault more than anything else, only a bad craftsman blames the tools. So it was with a frown that he walked to the target to retrieve the arrows from the ground and target. Inspecting each one to make sure the shaft, fletches and head were still intact and he hadn’t damaged them in anyway. Although most of the sets were done the same way he always did two of them crouched and two on one knee. Both made it harder to aim thanks to the longbow he used but they were valuable experience for hunting he had found. It was rare for you to be able to do a proper shot as you would on a range out in the wild after all.

Only two arrows of these four sets had hit and it was annoying but a clear reminder of his lacking skill with the bow. So after collecting all the arrows he paced back while thinking of the shots he had tried too hard, overcompensated or just didn’t shoot good enough. There was not much else to his mistakes than him being bad and the best way to correct that would be to keep doing it. So once more did he start the sets from the first. Closing his eyes and taking five deep breaths before opening them again and focusing on the target, raising the bow and pulling the string back, inhaling, holding his breath while making the last adjustments before relaxing his fingers to let the arrow fly.

Dead center. Uerta allowed himself a smile before pulling the next arrow and took a deep breath before taking another shot, this one hit the first ring to the left and the smile was gone from his lips. Until he could make all three arrows hit the center dot he’d keep going, or until the range got more flooded and he couldn’t focus. One perfect set was the goal today and he would try his best to get it. The third arrow barely hit the target at all which let Uerta to think ‘Pride before fall…’ with a smirk as his eyes closed and he placed the nock of a new arrow on the string while closing his eyes. Five deep breaths with the target in mind as he sunk down onto one knee.

The arrows flew one after another with a slow rhythmic thudding as they all managed to hit the target this time, two in the outermost ring and one in the third. It was better than before which was good enough for now as he pushed himself up to shoot standing again. Three hits, all in the fourth ring, two on the left and one to the right. The next three sets were all misses.

A day at the range

The time was lost as he had stood there for hours and let the arrows fly one after another. No noteworthy shots which couldn’t be put under luck, a few pointers from other archers about his stance and a moment of near rage as a arrogant archer tried to snatch his bow away from him. He stepped down when Uerta told he’d rather snap the bow over his leg than let someone who thought asking nicely meant telling someone “You’re useless and won’t learn anything like that.” The man had recoiled slightly after the comment and made another attempt at the bow, only to have Uerta backstep once before going to one knee and raising the bow above it.
“Pch.. You’re serious..? You’d rather ruin it then let me show you how to shot. What a runt.” He huffed out and glared at the younger Uerta who just met the glare with steady eyes.
“Maybe. But you already have a bow. Use your own if it is important to show me how to do it… though from what I saw I think I have hit the target more.”

The two stared at each other for some time after that before the man snorted and turned around to pick up his own bow and quiver. “Fine, be like that then. Runt.” Were the last words Uerta heard before before he relaxed and slid up to a stand and keeping his eyes on the man as he left. He were lucky the man were of the same caste or he’d not have a choice about the given… Request. Taking several deep breaths before deciding to take a short break and try to calm down before continuing practise. He unstrung the bow gently after gathering his arrows from the range, collecting the string and moving away from the range to sit down while watching the other rangers. Normally the fletcher or bowmaker would be the mark of his attention at these times but one had yet to show today, hence his gaze drifted from archer to archer with little interest. The mood had been spoiled and he needed to gather himself before going on with his practice.
A thing that took him far longer and far more effort than he wanted it too...

As he finally got up and moved over to the range once more to just mindlessly shoot. Not doing sets or trying too hard to improve himself, but rather just to clear his mind of the last traces of annoyance. Arrow after started to fly from his string as he racked his brain for who the man could have been, everything coming up blank as well as why the man had acted like that. Was it really just to feel good about himself? If that were the case, Uerta felt like he should have punched the man, but he restrained himself.

Then the arrow he let fly hit the ground a few feet ahead of the target and bounced into it before snapping in two. Not moving for three seconds, arms still raised after letting the arrow go, he closed his eyes and inhaled deep. As he let the air out in a steady “Phuuuu…” he also put his bow down and went to collect the twelve intact arrows and the one broken that had been shot down the range. He hated himself for the broken arrow and decided despite not having a perfect set it was at least time for another break.

A day at the range

The arrow had split a fourth of its length from the front but the fletches and its head was still intact so it shouldn’t be too hard to remove then and affix them to a new shaft. With a sigh he walked over towards where the fletcher sat and asked if he’d be allowed to watch him work while he took a break. He simply sat there in silence as he watched the man inspect arrowheads or fletches, testing the spine of some arrows or putting together new ones for the others at the range.

He looked down at the arrow in his hands and frowned to himself before getting up as the fletcher finished the arrow he was just working on. A quick glance to his side at Uerta as he held the two pieces of the split arrow out as he asked:
“Could you give me a new shaft and watch so I don’t make any mistakes when I fix this?”

The fletcher took the arrow and looked it over before simply putting it on the workbench.
“You are not my student, I don’t plan to teach you. But I can’t stop you from watching.” The words were said with intent before setting to work. He worked slower than he had done before while taking care to make each step visible to the observer that tried to see it all. The way he removed the threading holding the head without damaging it, how the fletches were cut loose and how he changed the two bad ones after finding fault. Then he pulled out a new shaft and looked it over once before making a quick cut on one end to push the arrowhead into before securing it with the thread. Just as quick he flipped it around and pulled out a string to secure the fletches, taking a moment to adjust and balance the new arrow a little.

“There..” He got up and gave the arrow a final look before holding his other hand out. “Let me borrow your bow.” Uerta blinked and hesitated for a split second before handing it over. The fletcher adjusted his grip before moving to a empty target and took up stance. A simple act of pulling the bowstring back and sending it flying let the arrow soar through the air into the middle of the target. “Hmh.. Not as bad as I thought.” He spoke to himself as he handed the bow back and went out to retrieve the arrow while humming to himself. As he returned he handed the arrow over to Uerta with a smile. “Keep up the practise, boy, and you might be able to do it too.” The fletcher let out a chuckle as he moved back to the table, shining a quick smile and saying: “Thank you.” as he was handed a Pion from Uerta who left the range with quick steps after that.

He carried the smile on his lips all the way home whilst going through the process of how the arrow was fixed more than a dozen times in his head, also the shot that was taken seemed so easy for the older man. He couldn’t help but let out a low giggle as he finally breached the entrance to his quarter and pulled the arrow out as soon as he sat down on his bed. Carefully going over it from one end to the other… It was only now he realized that he had entirely missed out when the nock had been put in.
