Character History

No one is born a gangster. Not even in Sunberth--a city where gangs permeate every aspect of life. For a few blissful years, the infant Nat was oblivious to that aspect of Sunberth's culture. His world was small, limited to a too-small apartment in the Sunset Quarters with his mother Seneca and younger sister _____, and the Pig's Foot Tavern just a short jaunt across the river, where his mother worked as a barmaid. Sometimes there were fights in the tavern (though he could never understand what they were over), and sometimes there were sleeping men floating down the river (though he never knew why his mother always make him look away when they came), and during the winters there was never enough wood to keep away the biting cold, but overall, life was good for Nat. His dad died when he was three or four--pneumonia, not a gang killing--but it meant little to him. He was too young to have ever really known the man.

As Nat grew, so too did his propensity for getting into trouble. His mother still brought him to Merv's with her, but she couldn't just settle him at a table in a back room and expect him to stay there. He began stumble out onto the tavern floor, playing with the other children. Before long, he was being put to work with the children of the other barstaff, carrying plates and mugs to and fro, trying not to be trampled underfoot by men much larger and much scarier than him.

Those other kids would end up forming the core of his friend group, or, as they came to be known, the Pig Foot Bastards: Snoutnose Sam, Mealymouth Matilda, and No-brain Nat. By the time Nat was ten, they had caught onto the fact that the work they were doing in the tavern sucked, so he and the Bastards found any chance to slip out that they could. They spent their days wrecking havoc in Sunberth's streets, picking pockets, stealing bread, and generally being a nuisance for anyone they encountered. Even in a place like Sunberth, most people didn't care enough to try to seriously harm a couple of kids making trouble. And for those people who did? Well, they were faster.

At thirteen, their luck ran out. After lifting the purse of a moderately wealthy gangster, the Bastards were pursued back to the safety of the Pig's Foot Tavern, where they were saved only because their pursuers were taught a lesson by the Daggerhands patronizing the establishment on that particular day. For twelve year old Nat, the Daggerhands seemed like heroes: big, strong men who didn't take lip from anyone, and who looked out for their own. He and the other Bastards started to look up to them, and before too long, they took notice.

The previously random, spur-of-the-moment crimes that defined their existence started to take on structure. Follow this man and see who he talks to. Steal the keys off of that woman. Run this message to this guy on the other side of town. Their services were rewarded with coin, of course, but more important than that was the sense of belonging they brought the Bastards. For the first time in a long time, they felt useful. Wanted. When the Daggerhands continued to ask more and more of them as they got older, they were eager to oblige--even despite the pleas of their mothers.

In a desperate attempt to keep her son from falling in with perhaps the worst crowd imaginable, Seneca used her relationship with Merv, the proprietor of the Pig's Foot Tavern, to persuade him to take the troubled boy on as an apprentice brewer. For months, the cantankerous old man refused. It wasn't until halfway through 514 AC that Merv finally came around to the idea. Whether it was because he had a change of heart, or because the economic situation of the tavern required him to take on new help, no one knows.

Though Nat was at first reticent to adopt the old man's trade, he quickly came to appreciate the art. More than that, he learned he was good at it. He began to spend more and more of his days in the basement of the Pig's Foot Tavern, malting barley and filling barrels full of ale. He suffered endless mockery for it from his friends, of course, who were all too eager to become full members of the Daggerhand.

Were Nat a more introspective man, he might recognize that his decision to take up brewing instead of mugging is likely the reason he is still alive. The uprising of 515 AV shocked the entirety of Sunberth. In just a few nights, Robern Dalagnar was killed, and the ranks of the Daggerhand were decimated. With the gang's membership eviscerated, they were forced to recruit heavily when the dust settled, pressing whatever associates they still had to become full Brothers and Sisters. Matilda and Sam were quick to acquiesce, feeling like the attack on the Daggerhand had been an attack on them. After some cajoling, Nat followed in their footsteps. When his mother found out several weeks later, she was...

Unhappy would be an understatement. The seventeen-year-old Nat was ousted from the family apartment he had lived in his whole life, with strict instructions not to return, and not to try and talk to his sister. His ouster also saw the end of his employment with Merv.

If Seneca had meant to pull her wayward son out of the gang, her actions did exactly the opposite of that. Without a roof over his head, Nat turned to his newfound Brothers and Sisters. He moved into a room in a Daggerhand tavern alongside the Bastards, where they would booze, fight, and party with their brothers-in-arms. It was the life. The city knew better than to mess with them, and he had access to more booze, money, and women than he had ever had before in his life.

It was during this stretch that he took part in his first street fight for the Daggerhand. While milling about Robern's Reaches, he and his crew were jumped by a group of some unknown street gang trying to take advantage of the Daggerhand's weakness. Their assailants had the element of surprise, enabling them to kill a couple of Nat's crew, but they were ultimately chased off after taking a few casualties of their own. Nat killed his first man that day--if the bald-faced teen could be called a man. He took him to the ground after taking a wound of his own in the chest. He drew his dagger and didn't stop stabbing until the man stopped screaming.

Sometimes, when Nat closes his eyes late at night, he can still see his screaming face.

Sam took some nasty hits during the fight, too. Their injuries had them bedridden for months. Matilda refused to leave their side, doing anything she could to nurse them back to health. "We'll be fine," Sam would always tell her. "Back on our feet in another week or two."

In time, Nat's wounds began to mend. Sam's didn't. Sepsis got him after a month or so. Matilda and Nat were inconsolable.

Matilda and Nat had always flitted on the edge of romance, but Sam's death sent them tumbling over it. They fell hard and fast, like their dalliance could fill the gaping hole Sam had left. Before long, Matilda was pregnant. They were both eighteen.

For a while, they were both ecstatic. This was a good thing. They would raise their child right. Only, they had trouble agreeing what "right" looked like. When they were nestled in bed late at night, when only the Gods could overhear them, Matilda would beg Nat to leave the Daggerhand and raise their child honestly. Sam's death had made continued membership in the gang harder to stomach--what had once made her feel important and powerful now only made her acutely aware of the mortality of the people she cared for. Nat was less convinced. Not many folks left the Daggerhand and lived to tell the tale. They had made their bed, he told her. Now they had to lie in it.

The arrival of their child, a girl named Charlotte, was enough to smooth over their differences for a while, but before long, tensions grew again. About a year after Charlotte's birth, Matilda finally came to the conclusion that trying to save Nat from gang life was a futile endeavor. Following an hours-long argument in the middle of the night, she took Charlotte as soon as the sun came up and left. If Nat refused to leave that part of his life, than he couldn't be part of her life.
