Nuavi (Under Construction)

Postby Nuavi on January 6th, 2011, 5:16 am

Name: Nuavi
Race: Konti
Age: 29 years, on the cusp of true adulthood. Born the 21st Day of Winter, 481 AV
Gender: Female
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 130lbs
Homeland: The City of Mura, of The White Isle

Hair:
White-blond and thick, it grew long during her childhood. Now that she has left her island home, it has been cropped shorter for efficient travel, wayward strands feathery and none longer than her shoulders. The locks shorn as she stepped foot on the mainland were cast into the sea, symbolic of her loyalty.

Eyes:
Light violet, hue darkest at the outer edge of the iris only to desaturate as it nears the pupil, giving her a stark, cool stare.

Skin:
Just a shade darker than milk, it is smooth and yielding, though elastic with youth. It is unmarred, as though it has never been broken. Scales of iridescent silver knit themselves in lilting, elegant patterns along her body, marking her as one of Laviku's. The gills just beneath the curve of her jaw are scarcely noticeable outside the water, mere slits which, when in use, split open to reveal ribbons of bright violet flesh. The gnosis mark bestowed by Avalis at her birth is found at the nape of her neck, just under the hairline.

Build:
Tall for her race, she is slender like her sisters, long-limbed and lithe. She swims often, and it shows in the delicate contours of muscle defining a narrow frame. No two planes of flesh touch, as though to maximize surface area exposed to the outside world. Because her fingers and toes are thinly webbed, it makes wearing gloves or certain types of footwear less than realistic. She moves with the grace common to her people, unhurried, as though savoring the very act of movement.

Facial Features:
Fine, full features, highly arched cheeks and a small, straight nose. Large eyes lined with long lashes, thin, expressive brows, small mouth and fair, lush lips. Round chin, somewhat sharp jawline, overall oval shaped face with an even hairline. It is a face capable of nuanced emotion while maintaining that brand of untouchable beauty her kind is known for. She is so used to seeing beautiful faces that she does not recognize her own as such-- to her, it is simply a face like any other. She wears no makeup.

Clothing:
Simple shirts, tunics and pants crafted of the natural fibers of her island homeland, thick linens dyed all the colors of a winter sea. A long shirt of white silk serves as an undergarment, tucked into two layers of pants the color of the ocean at night. Over this silk undergarment two tunics, one closely fitting and made of thick, tightly woven fiber for warmth, the second of looser design with long, billowing sleeves which fasten snugly at the wrist. At her waist a braided cord of seafoam and indigo is tied over the tunics, and beneath the edge of the tunics, snug at her hips is cinched a dark leather belt where various utilities are stowed. Besides the belt, the only other animal hide she tolerates are the dark boots which stop just beneath the knee, well-fitted and relatively new. These leather pieces she picked up on the mainland at the beginning of her journey, choosing them for their durability and use at the expense of her regard for animal life. During especially cold times she wears a long hooded cloak the color of seaweed, clasped at her neck with an iron-wrought seahorse.

Personality:
Considered outspoken for a Konti, she would be regarded as quiet, even demure by most other cultural standards. Perhaps it is her tendency to dispose of verbal nicety when it becomes redundant, resorting instead to blunt, if unerringly polite, means of making her thoughts known. She does not speak much and rarely initiates conversations with anyone but her family or fellow Konti, though if given a reason to interrupt a stranger, she will do so without hesitation or shame. Ever aware of those around her, she finds it difficult to remain introverted unless a vine of charcoal is in her hand and a pad of parchment is before her-- then she will lose track of hours, easily days, until the visions in her heart are completed on paper, startling, sometimes, to reveal themselves as mirrors of the hearts of others. Empathy is as breathing. She can sometimes predict events based on the intentions of those she is close to, feeling their thoughts and emotions as intimately as though they were her own. Yet because of this gift, this 'empathic foresight', she tends to avoid emotionally charged events and individuals for they are difficult to endure, wearing on her heart and mind until one of them frays completely. Her appreciation for art and beauty does not breed materialism; her taste in possessions is pragmatic at best, having only what is required. It is easy for her to let go of things, but not of people, being deeply loyal and easily connected to others. She is motivated firstly by her duty to honor The Call and secondly, secretly, to pursue the mystery of personal love.

Ethics:
Foremost is an unswerving regard for the sanctity of life in all its forms. Nothing is to be taken for granted, wasted, or used without gratitude. Nature is home, to be united with in harmony. She cannot conceive of those who attempt to battle or control it, and when met with the emotions of such folk, their hearts only serve to anguish all the more. It saddens her that life would seek disharmony within itself, and she seeks whenever possible to bring it back into balance. Such is her regard for life that she dislikes wearing leather or using items made from animals, but when faced with the reality of such items she is certain to give thanks and treat the goods as gifts, never as possessions. Selfishness is an alien concept; never does she put her own desires above the well-being of others, though rarely do they ever conflict. Love as anything but the familial or platonic varieties is something of a guilty curiosity, valued highly, yes, but yet to be experienced. She is afraid to love someone selfishly, to be consumed by a feeling so powerful.

Likes:
Swimming in the ocean at great speed and depth; charcoal drawing; being with family; dreaming; fantasizing; feeling the gossamer connections between all living things; feeling a connection between herself and another person strengthen; being part of a larger whole.

Dislikes:
Being alone; obligations; intense emotions for prolonged periods of time; being unable to connect with another person; being unable to fully understand the emotions she feels in another person; not being able to see the ocean; being expected to have many children; death; conflict; liars; ruthlessness; disharmony.

Character History:
Born to her mother Luanti beneath the waves of the White Isle and the first of two daughters, Nuavi remains, like many Konti, ignorant of her father's identity. Her younger sister Suali is still a child, only five years of age and very much the focus of her mother's world. It is certain their fathers are different, and Suali's very well may have been the visiting Inarta whom her mother was sweet upon. However, her own father is rumored to have been an Akalak, pregnancy the product of her mother's visit to Riverfall over three decades earlier. Luanti never spoke much of her time spent in the beautiful Akalak city, seeming too sad at the mention of it for Nuavi to pry further, despite how dearly she wished to. It felt as though her mother left something-- or someone-- very precious back in Riverfall, though Nuavi never knew the secret.

Secret :
While in Riverfall, Luanti bore an Akalak son before she became pregnant with Nuavi by the same father. However, strife with the father and the anguish of being forced to submit her son to the ruthless Akalak societal demands drove her from the city forever. She had had a vision of Nuavi's birth and knew she would bear a daughter, so she traveled back to Mura to give birth and raised Nuavi as her firstborn. She never told anyone about her son, Ferrin, and the father is the only other who knows the truth. It is unclear as to why Luanti keeps her son a secret, but it is likely in order to spare her daughters an anguish she believes they do not need to suffer.

Nuavi's childhood was typical of her race, family oriented and full of love and support. Her mother was always there to support her, and in the rare times she was absent, Nuavi never went without a friend or friendly stranger. As a result she has little concept of being alone and little desire to be so, needing very much to be with others. She has a strong fear of being disconnected from the world entirely, and seeks, perhaps too clingily, to bond with those immediately nearby-- sometimes regardless of their receptiveness. This tendency has never been a problem in Mura, but has proven an alien practice to those not of the Konti city, earning Nuavi her fair share of rejection and forcing her over the course of her recent journey to pursue The Call to endure the state of being alone with oneself. It has, if anything, intensified her odder qualities and given her ample time to thicken her stack of charcoal visions.

Early in life she exhibited an affinity for drawing, particularly via means of vine charcoal, that her mother wholeheartedly encouraged. When she wasn't conducting daily chores or out about in the ocean, Nuavi could often be found bent over a piece of off-white parchment, smeared with black and rapt by the task of recording the images in her heart. It was something she could not do in the sea, though she tried, once, to create images underwater. Sometimes when the surf was nearby she would use it to dilute parts of the image, not unlike a painter would use watercolor pigments, though with her fingertips instead of a brush. Before she left Mura, her hair was long enough that she could even use the tip of it as a kind of brush when applying the seawater, resulting in the edges of her hair to be darkly stained.

Aside from her artistic proclivities, Nuavi's upbringing was admittedly nondescript. Upon the birth of her younger sister Suali, her mother paid far less attention to her and seemed to expect her oldest daughter to shoulder the adult Konti responsibility of finding a suitable father for the children she ought to have. Nuavi silently resented this expectation, feeling too much a child herself to dream of having children of her own so soon, and too lost in tales of fairytale love the foreigners so often told in the paradise of the White Isle to settle for anything less. What a sad thing to bring a child into the world for the sake of something so cold as perpetuating the species; shouldn't it be for love, and love alone? So Nuavi neglected her maternal responsibilities, a rebellion which manifested itself in the neglect of her younger sister. She wanted little to do with helping to rear the infant, and her mother began to treat her with similar disconnect. Consequently, Nuavi increasingly sought familial companionship elsewhere in Mura, flitting from friend to stranger to tourist in an effort to escape encroaching loneliness-- and the gnawing sensation of betrayal. Her charcoal fits increased, and just before her 28th birthday she felt the inarguable compulsion to flee the White Isle. The Call had caught her.

Not days after the tug of the internal summons Nuavi was upon the mainland, for the first time in her life away from her island home. She had managed to obtain a good horse, a desertbred stallion she named Ravnoth, some basic provisions and only a novice's idea of how to survive on her own in the wilds of the world. She vowed to stay near the coast, one foot in the surf if possible, in order to remain close to something familiar. She slept in the sea when she could and turned Ravnoth out to fend for himself, as he was quite able and willing to do, until morning when they would ride until dark and repeat the process. Ravnoth was quite adept at sensing and avoiding danger, able to run for extended periods without rest and was nimble even in the bush; he was also aggressive to threatening wildlife, opting to rear up and whinny to intimidate creatures if possible. He would even strike at them with his hooves. If all else failed, he simply outran them. His main vice, if it could be called that, was a headstrong streak a mile long, though often he knew better than his rider and that fact saved them both a number of times.

Nuavi was not without contribution, either; her gift allowed her to sense the current state of mind and emotions of others, by which sometimes she was able to piece together their intention and by means of these fragments of motive would sometimes be able to predict a likely future outcome. This allowed her an edge in unfamiliar situations in unfamiliar cities where she would resupply, affording her on a few dire occasions to flit out of harm's way. Despite all this, luck has most certainly been with her on her journey from Mura, and now that winter has officially set in she has found herself in the Akalak city of Riverfall convinced The Call has lead her to its high-walled gates.

Post Creation History:
- Following thrill of The Call in her heart, Nuavi enters the gates of Riverfall after a long southward journey from her homeland in Konti Isle.
-After exploring the city bazaar on the second tier, she is given a tip by a kind old man to stable her horse at Sanctuary just outside the city, so to Sanctuary she goes.
-Upon entering Sanctuary, she discovers a troubled young Akalak named Ferrin in the reception office. She feels his anguish and attempts to show him she understands it, to no avail. He is there to receive riding training, and wants little to do with her. She cannot ignore the connection she feels to him, though is resigned, for now, to hide it.
-A Konti woman named Kavala enters and allows herself to be noticed; she is a strong, stoically commanding presence and reminds Nuavi of her mother. Nuavi then requests her horse be stabled and to receive further riding training, if possible, an impulse borne of the startling suggestions of a violent 'premonition'.
-Kavala agrees to train Ferrin and Nuavi in the ways of horsemanship and basic survival, with the help of her twin sister, Akela, whom Nuavi finds cold and is disturbed by the killer instinct she senses within the strange warrior woman. Kavala has let slip that Ferrin and Nuavi are expected at Sanctuary-- even late-- which resonates with The Call Nuavi is driven by.
