Without winter, the air was not as crisp as it should have been. Lani did not realize how utterly humid winters could be without snow, especially this far up in the mountains. The heavy coating of dead leaves from the fall was now clumped together with the rain and mud, and although she hated wearing boots, it was a necessity today. Thick leather soles protected her padded feet from the sloshy uneven mud, and whatever dangers it could be hiding. She was not a complete idiot, and knew that one should not stomp through the wild, but the wet ground made it hard as she followed Narth to the little clearing they had begun practicing at. Where his feet made small dainty patters against the dead leaves, her clumsy boots sucked at the mud, sounding off loud squishes as she followed suit. She tried to step on the leaves where she could, mimicking the red-haired warrior she followed, but with her luck she managed to find only a few that could quiet her footsteps.

When they did reach the small clearing, she examined the underside of her boot, finding a thick caking of leaves and mud ringing the side of her shoe, and she remembered why she put up with the uncomfortable leather on days like these.

The trees were bare above them, but a faint mist had settled around them, creating thick humidity in the air, but helping cool them off ever so slightly. Lani glanced up to admire the view for a moment. Although it was not the lush sunny environment that most people craved, she almost adored this muddy wet day surrounded by dead vegetation, and so utterly alone. Well, except for Narth.

”Nice day,” She commented adding a hint of sarcasm into her tone, although she did genuinely think it was a nice day. Narth snorted, and her black gaze slid to find his face, crowned by the prickly attire of dead branches that hung around him, weighted down with the recent rain. He was unravelling the small bundle he had brought with him, procuring two wooden swords from it, and wiping them down with the bottom of his shirt, revealing a slightly tanned portion of fatty skin. He was a very muscular man, but he was also an Endal, and so he ate well, making him rather large in general with all of the muscle that he acquired from his work being generously coated in fat and hair. But in the moment, dressed in the Inartan clothing and with recent scuffs and bruises from some unknown fight, his bare arms tensed as he wiped them off, accenting the uncomfortably strong triceps just right in the dim morning mist, and Lani felt a small surge of arousal course through her abdomen. He looked just a little more deadly than usual today, and she was just a little too into it.

”You know,” Lani laid a hand on her hip, resting just above her own sword and slowly took a few steps towards the man, letting her hips sway just a little more than they would with the natural movement. ”We have to go to bath after this. Want to get muddy?” She questioned, closing in on his personal space and smoothing a hand over his forearm with the offer. Of course, as usual, her mind had thought up more seductive words than what had come out. Her weak grasp on the language tended to disadvantage her seduction tactics, although she was getting better… in both. It was Narth’s idea to teach her the talon sword, and she wanted to learn desperately, but she was a women subject to her own body’s whims. At that moment, tumbling in the mud seemed a far better idea than earning more bruises than lessons with the wooden swords.

”You would like that, wouldn’t you?” He teased back, pressing one wooden weapon into her chest, forcing her to take a few steps back. She huffed, but relented. They had a mission today, and while the weather was still bearable, they ought to take advantage of it. ”Here, put this by the tree.” He demanded, handing Lani his sheathed sword as well. Lani let out a dramatic sigh, and unfastened her own sword from her belt, stepping over to a tree to lean the pair up against it. Before looking away her brain registered the marked difference in the weapons. They were similar in size, and while hers was nice, his was better. The hilt held more detailed glass and actual gems as well as the clear wear in the leather where he would hold it. She could clearly see the outline of his dominant hand, and the faint wearing where his other hand would somethings rest on the long handle. The sheath was just as nice, but also telling of time and appreciation. While freshly oiled and with detailed leatherwork, it was formed to the curved blade of his sword in a way that her new one was not. Her own hilt was nice, although not nearly as detailed or colorful, mainly in reds and oranges and yellows. The leather strapping was practically new, with no sign of the oil being worn away, let alone grooves where her fingers would rest. Her sheath fit her sword, although was more generic and did not curve to the metal as exactly as his own did. Lani had a long way to go before her sword would ever look as personal as his.

She took the time to stretch out her arms, not a stranger to the physical toll that practicing her sword with Narth would do to her. On her own it was easier, but that was mostly because she had a hard time challenging herself, but with Narth, well, he was plenty of challenge. While she twisted her back and stretched out her shoulders, she noticed Narth taking a few lunging steps with his sword, practicing a move once or twice before turning to her. She pointedly ignored him then, not letting any possible impatience on his part be the reason she would have a sore shoulder for a tenday. One she did turn back to the swordsman, he was grinning at her. She stuck out her tongue at him, assuming he was teasing her for being too prepared, and picked up her wooden sword.

”Want to eat that smile?” She threatened, although with no real weight to the words, and readied her stance. Narth chuckled at her antics, and readied his own sword. It was easy with him, no longer awkward or uncertain. Even though she still hardly understood him, and her own communication was bad, she was comfortable with this man. In the back of her mind, she was reminded that he was an Endal, and her a Chiet. He was a strong warrior, and she was somewhat okay with writing. She had no fighting skill like his, or really no physical skill she could show off. But still, he found her company pleasing enough to keep her around. And she was going to take every last advantage of that option that should could.

Lani had been practicing her stance in her spare time. Either in the storytelling section of the Enclave before it was occupied, or in the cramped apartments she had. With the weather she had not been able to come out to her clearing as much, but that hadn’t stopped her. It was easier now for her to gather her stance, feet at an angle, but her hips facing forward. Her arms felt a little stronger than the first time she ahd picked up a sword, and she held her elbows at a loose angle near her shoulder. From here she could angle an attack from any of the directions she practiced, although as a somewhat taller woman, the top was her preferred angle.

”Come for me.” He growled, a playful grin on his face, and Lani stumbled. This was not the first time she had heard that phrase in that tone from the large man, although never in this context. Typically they were significantly closer and sweatier. She reacted so and blushed, not lunging for an over-hand attack as she had intended to, and Narth’s grin split his face and he lunged for her.

Lani screamed.

She lurched back a few steps, instict propelling her away from the man that was attacking her. She did not drop the sword in her hand, but she forgot it was there, gripping it with two hands and pulling it away from the man instead of blocking with it. Whack.

The wooden blade of Narth’s practice sword slammed into her shoulder, and she huffed in pain. It was not a hit with any amount of strength, but simply momentum had caused enough pain. Before she had a chance to recoup, Narth was laughing, a sort of cruel humor at how easily he had unhinged and then taken advantage of her. To him, she could tell, it was just a fun joke. Pay back for her suggestive tones earlier, but Lani studied his expression, a frown on her lips, and realized the effectivity of what he had done. Raw skill aside, she had been fully prepared to attack him, and he had distracted her. Then he had used that distraction to the advantage of his raw skill. Where he could probably defend himself on such a distraction, with so many years of experience with the sword under his belt, Lani was so utterly inexperienced that her mind blanked and she lost what little knowledge of the sword she knew. It was utterly effective.

”Rude.” Lani chastised him, taking the hand he offered her to help herself up. Her bum was now wet with a bit of mud, but she didn’t care. She anticipated a fair amount of the earth and leaves on her body before the session was through. Still, she absently brushed at the caked mud as if it would help.

”Gotta be prepared, black eyes.” He grinned without shame, close enough to reach down and attempt to help her brush the mud off of her rump, more out of reaction than any left over sexual energy. Lani’s heart was racing now, and any last bit of lust was lost to the anticipation of violence. She had worked as a barmaid enough to know how to remove unwanted hands from her body, and so she used this moment of relaxed playfulness from Narth to showcase those skills. With one muddy hand she gripped the man’s upper forward, digging a sharp thumb into the base of his wrist, which forced his hand to spasm and curl forward. She then pulled her body out of his reach, using the momentum to yank his arm beneath him, curling it against the natural rotation of the elbow. It was a move that required very little strength so much as speed and knowledge of where exactly to press one’s fingers. Then she lightly skipped away, watching the man grimace and rub his wrist.

”Rude.” He replied to her, bending his wrist a few times before adjusting the wooden sword in his hands. Lani gave a coy smile.

”We practice now? Real practice?” She asked, calling a truce. She hadn’t harmed him, but it did show him she was over being playful. Playfulness between them didn’t tend to end well anyway.

”Alright Black Eyes, sure. Show me your attack.” He grinned, hard to anger, as always. Lani readjusted her now muddy grip on the sword handle, and took a tick to check her stance. She saw Narth shift into a warrior stance unconsciously, a fluid movement for him, and assumed he was ready. Using what she knew, she swung her sword forward, stepping towards Narth and slightly to her right. She knew if she had been fighting someone at her own skill level, this would move her out of the line of attack from them, but with Narth, she couldn’t count on that. She then continued this momentum by swinging her wooden blade down on Narth’s shoulder, forgetting to hold back like he had for her.

Luckily Narth was quicker than her, and just as quickly as she was able to hid him, his own hilt met hers with a thunk of wood and he pushed her attack off of his shoulder, blocking her wooden blade with his. She was now able to see why stepping to the right was important, as her head was completely out of his range of attack, at least in this one move. Only Narth was much stronger than her, and so with his momentum, he pressed her sword down until she let it swing loose, no longer aiming to attack but to get out of his way.

”Good.” He praised, even though it seemed she had been just too easy to block and disengange. ”You always seem to go for the overhead one, I’m not sure why, you’re so small.” Lani huffed.

”Only small by you.” She corrected, thinking herself actually rather tall for a humanoid female.

”It’s fine, we will work with that. In fact, it is more important for you to learn how to block overhead attacks, because odds are, you will be fighting someone larger than yourself. Like me.” He explained, and she rolled her eyes, although he could not tell. But she didn’t argue with him, he knew way more than herself. ”Run through it with me, you’re attacking.” He instructed, and Lani readjusted her grip, readying her stance again.

”Slow?” She asked.

”Slow.” He confirmed, and she nodded. With more precision and intention, she took a step forward and slightly to her right, bringing her sword from her shoulder arcing down on his shoulder. As if acting out a slow scene in a play, Narth leaned back and to his right, avoiding her blade simply. Even though they were going slow, she followed through with her attack, watching as he brought his sword down from an upward arch, his wooden blade colliding with hers in a hollow thunk. She noticed that his dominant hand was at the top of his hilt, and he followed through with his swing, taking her blade down and disengaging as he had earlier. Lani’s mouth popped open with an ‘Oh’ of recognition.

”Just like attack, but you hit blade not body?” She asked, and he nodded. It seemed rather self-explanatory, but if she knew anything about watching and then doing is that Narth would make it look way easier than it was.

”Now, there are two things you can do with a correct block, but let’s just work on getting the attacker’s sword out of your way to start, okay?” Lani nodded, taking a step back and adjusting her stance. ”This time I’ll attack you, slowly.” He said, and Lani nodded again. Black eyes glided from his hips to his shoulders to his face, gathering where his hit would come from as he slowly swung down on her. She could see his expert feet glide into the position with ease, and then she could see his sword swinging down to collide with her shoulder. She was maybe a little to quick as her heart picked up, and she leaned back. She was too small and couldn’t lean back far enough so she found herself taking an extra step back, hoping the action wouldn’t bit her in the ass later. She took the extra room to enact an attack on Narth’s blade, swinging her own sword down from her shoulders, and following through with the slash until the blade was no longer of danger to her.

”Good, good. Fast now.” Narth continued on, and she barely had time to readjusted before he was swinging at her. She took another step back and swung her sword down on his, pushing all her strength into getting the blade out of her way. Only she might have been too far back because he reached forwards and tapped her thigh with the blade. Again, not with any intention to harm, but she knew she would feel a bruise there in the morning. She grimaced, and stepped back.

”Again.” She demanded, and Narth stepped into her. This time she stepped back almost at the same time he did, leaning out of the way of his sword and then quickly bringing hers down. She learned from her last mistake and took a step back as she did so, which both removed her extended leg from his range, and put more momentum into her own slash, pushing his blade thoroughly out of her way.

”Excellent.” He grinned, and then let his stance relax, showing her he would not attack again. She did not relax her own stance, readjusting her hips and feet for a more secure grasp in the mud, but she did pay attention to what he was saying. ”Okay, attack me slow again, and I will show you the second option.” Narth offered and Lani nodded, stepping into him quickly and bringing her blade down, not giving him warning as he had not given her. Of course, he brought his sword up and fell into stance with ease, blocking her sword as she had expected. However, this time when his blade met hers, he lunged forward, using his hilt to press her blade back until her sword was parallel with her ear, more of a danger to herself than to him. She felt his blade on her hair and uncomfortable close to her neck, and saw the usefulness of the move.

”This one to keep fight on, yes?” She asked, realizing that the first thing he showed her would give the defender the option to run, while the second was to throw off an attack and continue a fight. Brilliant.

”Uh, yeah.” He confirmed, and she realized he must have been a bit confused on her wording in NAri. ”The first one I showed you allows you to run, the second is to fight. I want you to practice both, just in case. Although you’ll most likely prefer the run option.” He explained, his last sentence a nonchalant observation of her personality. It bridled Lani’s back for a tick as she realized he off-handedly called her a coward without realizing it. She was not in a state to ponder what he meant by it, or if it was truly a cowardly concept, instead she felt the sudden need to prove to him that she could fight.

”Attack me again.” She said, gripping her sword and squaring up. Narth didn’t nod, just lunged, and she ran through the simple defensive maneuver again, now adding the second option. She stepped out of the way and leaned back, cutting off his sword’s arc with her own. This time, instead of stepping back again, she lurched forward, using all her arm strength to press his sword into himself, stabbing her blade in the space between his sword and his neck. The grating sound of wood scraping against itself sounded, and she grinned at the fact that she had gotten it on the first try. Yes, he had gone slow, but she had done it. Narth merely nodded, unaware that he had offended her and that she had been trying to prove a point. He was in the headspace of instruction and so her success with the maneuver only meant that he could continue on.

”Good, now let us work on your left side, you don’t want to learn to favor a hand with sword fighting.” Narth nodded, breezing on to the next part of the lesson. It slightly dampened Lani’s success, but she supposed the move was so simple he couldn’t fathom her messing it up. To be fair, had she not felt the need to prove herself, she might have. Lani readjusted her stance to favor the left side and anticipated his attack once again, this time opting to take the fleeing block option, simply because it was easier.

Again she forgot to step back and he smacked her in the thigh. She huffed, and prepared again. The mist was sticking her hair to her temple and neck, but the excitement of learning the sword was keeping the humidity or mud from dampening her spirits as they continued to practice, and Lani continued to learn new moves to practice and learn, bettering her skill with the sword.
