Amelie Craven

Amelie was bored. Moritz, Mommy and Dad were asleep, at least she thought so,  and it didn't seem like anyone else other than the house itself was around and even it seemed too preoccupied to play with her at the moment, choosing instead to make weird colourful shapes all along the walls of the living room. She'd been sitting on the shiny tiles and alternating between watching the patterns grow across the walls inch by inch and staring down Bird who looked delicious as always to her. The patterns made her head feel funny if she looked too long and Bird made her tummy growl if she stared too long, she just couldn't win.

After what felt like ages of her visual balancing act, Amelie's attention was caught by the sound of a closing door somewhere in the house, her keen hearing told her it was the front and without hesitation she ran off toward it on two legs, excited to see who it was but as she rounded the corner to the open door she was forced to come to a halt as the door slammed itself in her face, blocking her exit and leaving Amelie to cross her arms and puff her cheeks in response to the house's actions.

"Finity I want to go outside!" By now she'd caught whiff of the scent left behind by the person that had just passed through and easily recognised the powerful musk of her father. It seemed that the house did not like the idea of letting her out of its safety as the lock on the door clicked shut, very clearly illustrating Finity's stance and in turn earning it a tiny tantrum from the unhappy little fox girl. "I wanna go with Papa NOW!" The words were punctuated by several stomps to emphasise her insistence. It wasn't often that Amelie misbehaved, but she knew her time to catch up to her father before he was too far gone was quickly dwindling and with it, her chances for entertainment.

Luckily, it seemed that her tantrum had done the trick, the front door clicking and then swinging reluctantly open as Finity made its choice, though it clearly wasn't happy with it.

Once the door had been opened Amelie wasted no time in darting out onto the porch, down the steps and across the lawn, being careful not to stomp on the funny arrangement of flowers in square shapes, just like the living room wall, as she did. In the distance she could see her father's shape and she quickly began screaming in an attempt to catch his attention. "Papa! Wait for me Papa!" If the man looked back he would be greeted by the sight of his daughter waving frantically as she ran towards him, a blue dress and white head of hair visible above the abundant flowers in the yard.

A Performance To Remember

ImageAllister wandered about in the yard. He stared at the even grass and recalled the image of the toothy spikes that once filled the moat created by the house. The black stare fluttered like a moth along the dewdrops reflecting the moon’s silvery light until it landed upon Inifinty Manor. The house that was alive -but still a house- yet it could perform magic and held conversations with the goddess, Madeira. Boards for siding, glass for windows and tiles for a roof- it looked just like any old house in terms of its construction. So what made it special? The hyena didn’t know but he paced about as if a different angle of view might glean more insight into the mysteries of a building that can communicate with people.

The former slave dug a hand into his coat’s inner pocket to find it was rather low on the kina department. “Hn!” He grunted. Like a sudden rainstorm, Allister was washed in the realization that he hadn’t reported for work in at least a season. Without a second thought towards his day, he walked around the big old residence towards the front gate. An itch crept up his throat and made him cough for a few ticks. The spell shook his dense frame until he buckled at the waist and clutched his ribs in the vice of his leather-clad arms. Once it was over, the lingering nerve responses tickled beneath his flesh up and down his spine. The canine lept backward against the porch rail and shimmied up and down in a weak effort to sate the itching sensations.

A chime or two passed between these things before Allister was ready to move on but he did so with a bit of a swagger. It always felt good to earn money even if all he ever did was pass it on to Madeira. Just passed the house’s front railing, the performer stopped with one leg up in the air -midstep- as a notion flooded his consciousness. Allister could not spend money on his children, too...on Jomi, on Lani! He had a family! The brilliant white of his big smile split the grey and ink of his face. “I have a family!”

Just then, as if on cue, the front door swung open on its creaking hinges. They spit dust like minuscule pyrotechnics for the entrance of Amelie. The former slave felt his entire body tingle with joy at her bouncing energy and blonde hair. He welled up with emotions that were beyond his broken upbringing and it nearly capsized him in a darkness that clawed at his throat and tightened it like the noose that had hung his first love. Then the bright clarity of two blue eyes shook him deep to his soul and froze him -just like her mother. Wait, she called. Papa is how she named him. Papa.

“‘Melie!” Allister cooed. In honor of Madeira, he intentionally left the ‘A’ from her name when it left his lips. With a large flourish of his faded purple duster, the hyena spun in a circle on one foot and lowered himself down onto a single knee just in time to catch the swift-moving toddler. “I will always wait for you, my little fox!” His gaze twinkled as it reflected her own platinum hair and bright stare back at the little girl. The blue dress made her eyes all the brighter and it strained his vision to simply look at her. As if his body was trying to purge itself of filth, a single tear washed out each eye in a quick blink. “Will you come with me to watch the dancers juggle fire?”

He held a curiously normal grin of anticipation as he waited for her answer. Allister was far older in Kelvic years but his mind was young like a child’s. Once he got the ok to proceed with his initial plan, the rough hands and potent arm muscles scooped up the tiny Kelvic in a hug that placed her against his bare chest. With a vigor born from a solid diet, a decent night’s sleep in a real bed, and the love of a family and its goddess, Allister hopped, skipped and bounced his way along the path from their home with his daughter in his arms.

To keep rhythm during his march, he sang an easy tune to warm up his cold vocal cords. His voice was weak and wavered on sustained notes but the overall gravel in his tone was consistent, not so much like the phlegm that it used to resemble.

“There was a decorated general with a heart of gold
That likened him to all the stories he told
Of past battles won and lost and legends of old;
A seasoned veteran in his own time.”

Amelie Craven

Amelie only sped up as her father stopped, spun around theatrically and called back to her, closing the distance in no time at all with her clumsy rushed steps. Practically leaping into his arms, Amelie could do nothing but smile in his embrace, until she noticed his begin to water, small hands moving to either side of his face to wipe his cheeks dry. Was he crying? He couldn't be, his face had a giant smile after all. In her mind the two couldn't coincide and since it confused her Amelie discarded the troubling thoughts the moment her father had spoken again.

"Yes! Yes!" She responded, already bouncing up and down with excitement only to be swept off her feet and into her father's arms the moment later. Fire jugglers? She'd never heard of such a thing but it sounded fantastic, she considered asking but she wanted to be surprised. Not that it mattered what they did, she little fox was elated just to spend time with the far larger hyena.

As they began to walk and her father started his amazing song, Amelie could only let out childish laughs and giggles I'm response, enjoying the vibrant energy the man embodied, something completely different to her mother who was always the perfect lady in her eyes. It intrigued her and confused her at the time, her parents, they were both so very different but so perfect nonetheless. Her mother was smart and always had an answer for everything while her father was funny and tough. Beyond that, her instincts told her never to disobey father, he was older, bigger and stronger than her so she knew she should follow him, but when her mother was around it was like she was the leader. It was confusing, but she wanted to be like both of them one day, a strong, smart and tough lady.

As they bounced along to her father's song and march, Amelie was forced to split her attention between the story thr song was telling, which consisted of a lot of words she didn't understand, and her imagination as it ran away with thoughts of whatever a 'fire juggler' was, what did they do with the fire? She hadn't the slightest but that made it all the more exciting.
