The day after Ennisa's sparring match with Vigor, she counted her kina, asked Itzi nicely if she would look after the sleeping baby for a bell or two, and went to the Azure Market. The situation the day before had got her thinking, and she knew she needed to buy a few extra things if she was going to be able to do her usual tasks with a baby in tow. Life was difficult enough already without having the problem of childcare added to it. Before she went, she flicked to the back of her notebook and wetted the nib of the quill with ink to write a small shopping list.

The first requirement was some kind of basket, so she scribbled this down at the top. The basket was to put the child in so that if she needed to, she could set him down and not worry about him falling over and hurting himself. She tapped the pen against her chin as she thought. There were a few other things she knew she needed. Namely, and at this thought she cast a wary glance at the desk where her cloak and hat were draped, some thicker winter clothes. Her cloak, which somehow had miraculously changed its colour, was perfect for spring through to autumn, but the chill winds of winter cut through it like, well... ice.

There was also the distrust she felt towards the two articles of clothing. Ever since the dream where the baby had come from, various things had changed or gone missing. Her dagger was gone, though she couldn't remember losing it anywhere in particular. Her cloak was a shimmering new thing, and her hat... She set the pen down and gingerly placed the hat on her head. It was comfortable like it had always been, but... "Are you really that cold, wearing a hat indoors?" A little sarcastic voice whispering in her subconscious. It was, and could only be the hat, of course. It was all too strange.

She took the hat off again, and picked up the pen. She wrote down the rest of the things she wanted to get, and double-checked her kina. Once she was ready, she waved goodbye to Itzi, gave her baby a final, measured look, and left.

________

It was a lovely day, but Ennisa was cold and as such, a little miserable. She walked briskly to try to warm herself up. By the time she reached the Azure Market, she had mostly succeeded, except her exposed hands, ears, and the tips of her toes. First things first would be the new, warmer cloak and hat. Perhaps a scarf, too. She looked around and instead of going to the Silk Palace like she normally did, she sought somewhere with ready-made clothing. She had no patience for waiting.

Thankfully, due to the plunging temperatures, the various seamstresses and tailors of Lhavit had been capitalising on it to produce warming clothes for caught-out Lhavitians just like Ennisa. There were several stalls and small little shops peddling such items, with wildly varying price tags depending on how confident the seller was feeling. Ennisa ignored the first two shops that popped up as she entered the Azure in favour of those deeper within the twisting streets of the market. She hoped those, which might reasonably be expected to get less trade, would be better priced in the hopes of getting a sale that way.

Eventually she stopped outside the neatly laid out stall of a pale-skinned woman, who was sipping a mug of steaming tea. "Hello there!" Ennisa greeted the woman and began to feel the material of the woollens laid out on the table. She was pleased to feel the texture; rough yet warming, and thick enough to keep the snow off her. She picked a dark brown item with a hood out from the pile and asked, "Can I try this on?" The woman considered, then nodded in the affirmative.

Ennisa slipped the cloak around her shoulders and fastened it at the collar. She swished a few times. The material felt comfortable, and warm. The hood was trimmed with a soft, tan-coloured fur, which was delightfully warming. She didn't bother to take it off again. "How much?"
"That's one kina and 5 topaz kina." Ennisa's eye landed on a set of deep, burgundy red gloves and a scarf that lay nearby. She ummed and idled whilst admiring the woollen material, then caved. "How much for these, as well?"

"The gloves and scarf together come to one kina and 8 topaz. Are you getting all three things?" The shop-keeper grinned. Ennisa, feeling generous as well as cold, dug the coins from her coin purse and deposited them in the woman's hands. "Thank you."

Feeling a lot warmer, Ennisa walked slowly past the stalls. She bought a new belt from a leather trader, and a new vial of black ink from an artist's supply. She placed both those items in her backpack, and then set her sights on getting the most important thing she needed at the moment - the basket for the baby. It took her a while of searching and scouting before she eventually discovered a little wooden shop-front displaying stacks and stacks of baskets.

She stopped outside and thoughtfully inspected the assembled wares. She held an image of the baby in her mind, trying to remember how big he was so that she didn't accidentally buy something too small. There was a lot of choice, so it took her a while to narrow down the options. After a while, a short, stout woman emerged from the tiny shop and gave the browsing Ennisa a sharp look-over. Ennisa, who was engrossed with picking up the baskets, setting them down, estimating sizes, almost jumped out her skin when the basket-weaver interrupted her thoughts. "Anything I can help with?" This woman was certainly not as welcoming as the cloak seller from earlier. Her voice was rough, and accented sharply like a foreigner.

Nonetheless, Ennisa had at that moment just found the exact basket she wanted. Though she felt like responding with an equally rude tone, she simply asked, "How much is this one?" The stout old basket-weaver looked at it, looked at Ennisa from tip to toe, and answered, "One topaz." This was more than reasonable, so she forked out the kina and placed it in the woman's outstretched hand. "That it?" Ennisa raised an eyebrow. "I gave you the price you asked. What more do you want, woman?"

The grey-haired shop-keeper narrowed her eyes and folded her arms, but said not a word. Ennisa, who had no reason to stay, sighed dramatically and flounced away, her new purchase looped under her arm. What a shyke.

The next stop was slightly more delicate in nature. Since she had somehow lost her dagger, she needed a new one. The practice with Vigor had been encouraging, and thoughts of harming Clement through violence had been stewing since the end of Autumn. She might have been too hasty when the thought of killing him had come to her, but she soon realised that there was a strong, truthful part of her that really did want to cause him harm. Not only because he had messed with her friend, but because she somehow knew that her intervention wouldn't stop him. Not for long.

Yet, her own strength would not be enough against him. She was weak and untrained. That much was obvious. She needed a bit of an advantage, and cold steel would provide that. So she wandered with intent through the Azure, looking for a weapons shop. Eventually, she found one, tucked up a narrow alleyway. A sign swinging above the door announced the dimly lit place as Wullis Weapons. She approached determinedly, and entered.

She shrugged open the fastenings of her new cloak and slipped the gloves from her fingers. These she shoved into her pockets. She walked into the shop determinedly, but once she was inside properly, she slowed to look around the property. The proprietor was dealing with another customer; two men having a low conversation over an item on the counter, so Ennisa looked around and sought out the daggers on display.

There were four laid out on an old wooden display stand. Each four was different, with varying price tags. To Ennisa's surprise, the weapons were quite clearly used goods, though the quality was fine, as far as she could tell. The largest dagger on the far right of the group was simply not suitable; not only was the price tag ridiculous, but the fanciful details on the shaft and the curved blade didn't suit Ennisa's tastes. The third in the row was well-made, and looked hardly used at all. The leather-grip handle was nut brown and smooth. The pommel, at first glance, was nothing special, yet as Ennisa looked closer it became apparent it was a polished orb of semi-precious stone. She could hardly dare look at the price tag, and when she did she shook her head sadly. It was not for her.

That left the first two on the stand. They were both fairly similar; both about the same length, made of straight, polished steel, and both bound with rough leather on the hilt. The pommels were the only major difference. One was diamond-shaped and studded with stubby spikes, the other was rounded metal. Ennisa dubiously stuided the spiked one, and picked it up to feel the weight of it in her hand. Yet as she looked down at it, lying in her grip, she shook her head. It wasn't for her.

That left the only other one there. It was a small item, with a rounded pommel. The tag attached to it read: 'ten ki, engraved initials SYZ'. Ennisa felt a flicker of recognition, and picked up the dagger. It seemed perfectly weighted to her grip. She peered closer, looking for the initials, and eventually spotted them at the base of the knife where the metal joined the handle. S.Y.Z She blinked, and then a chill ran down her spine. Her old dagger, the one she'd found two years ago. The initials carved into the base of that dagger had been very similar.

"Petch." She whispered under her breath. What did it mean, if anything? FVZ and SYZ. They were so similar, but it was possible it was just a coincidence. Yet Ennisa was starting to believe that coincidences weren't really a thing. What could the chances be of discovering this dagger as soon as she had lost her original one? She winged a short prayer to the only goddess that had any relevance to her, Zintila, and checked the weapon again, thinking about fate and its peculiarities. She knew without a shadow of a doubt that she would buy this dagger.

She took a few practice stabs, then turned to face the desk where the owner and another man were still deep in discussion. Ennisa wasn't a patient person, so she walked up to the two of them and stood obstinately waiting to give the shop-keeper his kina. Whilst there, she ear-wigged in on the conversation.

"... and my ship-mate Anastar will bring it up for you." This was said by a chestnut-bearded man wearing a set of salt-stained boots. Ennisa noticed the deep lines cut into his face by time and weather, and made the fair guess that he was a sailor.
"I'll believe the state of it once she's brought it up, then." The reply from the shop-keeper, who was leaning with one elbow on the counter as he talked to the sailor. "And Captain... don't try anything funny with me. I know you, Kastene."

Another twinge of familiarity shot through Ennisa as she listened. Her attention turned perceptively towards the captain, who didn't pay her any attention. That name... He merely finished the conversation by smiling a wickedly sharp grin, and turning neatly to exit. A small bell tinkled quietly as the door shut behind him. Once he was gone, the shop-keeper turned to Ennisa with a weary look about his eyes, and said, "How can I help you?"

Ennisa mutely put the dagger down on the counter. The man looked down at it and the corners of his eyes wrinkled as he nodded approvingly. "Aah yes, a good blade that one. That's ten kina. Twelve if you would like the scabbard that came with it." She scrabbled with her coin purse as Wullis extracted the scabbard. "Can you tell me where you got this dagger from?" She asked the question almost hesitantly.

Wullis frowned as he took the proffered twelve kina, and slid the scabbard over the counter. "Any reason for asking?" Ennisa tried to appear calm as she shook her head. "It just looks familiar to me." The shop-keeper looked at her for a moment, considering. Eventually, he shook his head. "You would have to ask the captain who just left my shop. It was he who sold it to me at the beginning of winter. Perhaps he would know. Can I help you with anything else?"

"That's it, Wullis, was it?" The shop-keeper nodded. "Aye, that's me. If you're ever in need of another blade, come again." It was as solid a goodbye as she would get. Ennisa agreed she would visit again, and hastily strapped the dagger with its leather scabbard to her belt. As she left the shop, she looked around for the captain, but he was nowhere to be seen. She cursed under her breath, and wriggled the belt back into place properly. At least she felt a little better now that she had a dagger once again.

She was about to put her new gloves back on to stave off the wintery chill, but her fascination with the uncanny blade lingered. She pulled the cloak a little closer around her, and walked over to the side of the Azure to have a closer look at the dagger. She found a windowsill and perched upon it, as she discreetly withdrew the metal blade. She held it up to her gaze. As before, the initials S.Y.Z were engraved at the base of the handle in a tilted script. She peered closer at the layers of grime that had built up in the grooves of the text over the years, and tried without success to pick some out with her fingernail.

As she did so, she wondered what the dagger's story was. She felt sure, somehow, that her old dagger and this new one were linked. At the moment, she couldn't think how that could be, but she would find out. She inspected the rest of the blade a little more closely, and was glad to see that the cutting edges were nice and sharp. The handle was worn, true, but enough leather still wrapped the shaft so that it was comfortable to hold. She tried to imagine whose hand it might have been held in, but fell short of conjuring an imagined face for the previous owner. The pommel was good and solid too. She held it in a couple of different ways to get used to how it felt in her hand, and stabbed it in a sacrificial style into the wooden sill she sat upon.

"OY!" Startled out of her skin, Ennisa slipped down off the window sill as the house's owner yelled through the glass. She ran, giggling manically to herself, until she was well away from the market and back almost home. However, she lingered outside the Solar Winds apartments, hesitating. There was something about what Wullis had said earlier that still lingered on the brain. It was about the captain. The name - Kastene - rang a distant bell, and he was the man who had sold Wullis the dagger she now owned. If there was anyone that might know more, it would be him.

Right?

She slipped her gloves back on, and turned away from the Solar Winds, down towards the port. If she was going to find Kastene anywhere, she reasoned the best place to start would be there. It was a long walk down tricky terrain, so she took her time. In the mushy, slushy snow it was even harder going, so it took almost all her concentration to stay upright as she slipped and slid down the stone steps and trail to the port.

In the end, she got there without incident. Down by the ocean it felt even colder, though that was probably due to the sea air. It was quiet, except for the clinking in the rigging, and the slapping of the calm ocean's water on the hulls of the few boats moored and anchored at the port. Ennisa looked about her to make sure that her 'friend', Garron the fisherman's son, was nowhere in sight. It seemed they were out on the water, for their nets and crates were nowhere to be seen. She continued to look around carefully, looking for anything to indicate the presence of the sea captain called Kastene.

Meeting the Captain

Ennisa soon found plenty of evidence in the form of the ship. The dock was often quiet, with only a couple of boats moored, most of them local fishing skiffs that foraged the local waters for fish. Occasionally, she knew that other vessels came, from further afield. Trade with Lhavit was not exactly something she knew much about, but as a citizen of the city she knew about the movement of goods from other places. Perusing the market-place was proof enough of that. Yet, most of the time, she kept away from the port, and didn't see the movement of those trading boats in and out of Lhavit's waters.

Her eyes scanned upwards as she took in as much detail as she could. Her initial gut reaction was one of abstract distrust - the ship was essentially the figurehead of the idea of the outsider, and something she associated with the Svefra, who were even more untrustworthy than most. But, the sea captain Kastene undoubtedly came from the boat, so she needed to know a little more. It was Captain Kastene that she needed to see; she cared not for anything else about the ship.

Surprisingly, it was fairly quiet. The hubbub of unloading and disembarking had died down since the ship had first moored in Lhavit. If Ennisa had been there then, she would have seen a blizzard of activity, as people unloaded crates, and ship-mates shouted harsh directives from the deck. Now, there were only a couple of people aboard that she could see, but they were busy about whatever tasks they needed to do now that the ship was stationary, and mainly ignored her nosing around.

Even so, she kept herself to herself, and moved quietly across the decking of the dock. She was in two minds about what to do next. Either she sneak aboard, and this plan really did speak to her sneaky sensibilities, or she would announce her intention of speaking to the captain. The latter felt a bit risky - what if Kastene refused to speak to her? The former seemed nigh on impossible, considering what she had seen so far. The only point of entry she had spotted was the gangplank, and that was easily noticeable from most if not all points on the boat, which she had discovered was named the Heilana Courage.

After a moment's hesitation, Ennisa resigned herself to the boring option, and walked up to the gangplank. It was only when she got nearer that she realised the narrowness of the wooden plank. She put one foot down, looked down over the edge of the dock at the sloshing waters, and looked firmly back up at the ship. It was petching freezing. With enough willpower, she wouldn't fall in. She steeled herself, then put the next foot down. She wobbled slightly, and she thrust her arms out on either side to keep herself balanced.

Yet, she could feel her balance carefully careening out of control. So she hot-footed up the rest of the plank; speed the only thing keeping her from toppling over. It was only a few moments, but when she was back on firm ground she grinned from the mild thrill of almost-but-not-quite falling in.

Her amusement was short-lived. One of the busy sailors, who had been quietly going about their own chores, must have spotted her as she ascended to the ship, and was now stood in front of her. Unimpressed, one hand on his hip, and rag in the other hand and a bucket at his feet. Ennisa looked down at her own feet, standing on his freshly scrubbed floor, and smiled coquettishly and a tad bit sheepishly at the brawny sailor.

"What are you doin' here, lass? I don't recall you getting permission to come aboard." His statement was blunt, and the question rhetorical, and he frowned as he regarded the pale-haired woman stood before him. "What is it you want?"

"It's actually the captain I'm looking to speak to. Captain Kastene, I believe? It's about a dagger."
