The Northern Dovecote This more recent addition to Avanthal’s buildings is an oddity, though not for its appearance. Its aesthetics are completely in line with other construction around Avanthal. It appears the same white as Icestone, but whatever mineral it is made of is resistant to the thaw. What makes it odd is that it suddenly appeared overnight during the Winter of 519 AV. There was nothing there, and then there was. With murders still occurring on occasion, this new apparition made real was regarded with suspicion. It was considered a bad omen, if not a direct ploy of assassins to use in the taking of more Vantha lives. Immediately, the Icewatch and Everwatch set up a round the clock watch while Iceglaze set about to containing the building with a wall, but nothing came from it. No attacks issued forth. No shady denizens emerged, nothing but snow pigeons. It soon became obvious that this heavier, hardier bird was roosting in the tower. It didn’t take long for Marus Trench, the trader in charge of the Gate City’s market, and Selvenienne Frostfawn, granddaughter of the late Tovan, to come forward with information about what it really was. Both had been visited by Xyna who told them this was a doorway to Her Outpost, a place that existed for trade and profit and nothing more. There, She promised, there was no war and no bounties. The animosity toward the Vantha people would only spill over into more difficult trade deals. There, their lives weren’t in danger. Xyna marked Marus, making him Her envoy in Avanthal, but put Selvenienne in charge of caring for the birds in Her Dovecote. As with any other of Xyna’s Dove Cotes, one only needs to enter, close the door behind them, wait a few breaths, and open the door again to find themselves in the Outpost. Thought the Vantha still find themselves suffering with poor trade deals, this Outpost has been key in preventing the complete starvation of Avanthal.
