Varryn

✨Basic Information✨

Race: Human
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Birthday: Summer 61 of 498
Birthplace: Riverfall

✨Appearance✨

Varryn stands at 6'2" with the lean, athletic build of someone who has combined systematic training with practical wilderness work. His 185-pound frame reflects years of disciplined bodybuilding supplemented by the demands of guiding expeditions. Every muscle earned through both structured training and real-world application. His shoulders are broad and well-defined, tapering to a narrow waist that speaks to his acrobatic training and the fluid movement required for his particular brand of fighting.

His skin bears the rich bronze tan of someone who has spent years under both the open skies of Cyphrus grasslands and the filtered light of jungle canopies. His coloring speaks to healthy exposure and proper care in a manner of speaking. Golden highlights catch the light across well-maintained skin marked by the selective scars of a professional outdoorsman. Thin rope burns trace his forearms from years of handling lines and tackle, while a few deeper marks on his torso and limbs tell stories of encounters with dangerous wildlife during expeditions.

One might say that his face is a study in masculine elegance. Angular planes and lean contours anchored by prominent cheekbones. His square, strong jaw is framed by a full beard extending three to four inches in length, its thick black growth well-groomed yet maintaining the rugged texture of someone who spends considerable time outdoors.

His most captivating feature, as far as he is concerned, remains his eyes. Deep brown pools that shift like living amber, warming to earth tones or darkening to shadow depending on the light. They hold the alert intelligence of a professional guide combined with an intensity that suggests someone constantly reading his environment for both opportunity and threat. There's a depth there that speaks to hidden knowledge and carefully guarded ambitions.

Thick, raven-black hair frames his face, kept at a practical length that allows him to tie it back when working while remaining long enough to catch the light when loose around his shoulders. The natural waves speak to good health and regular care rather than neglect, creating an attractive contrast with his bronzed skin.

A natural covering of dark hair adorns his well-developed physique. It spreads across his broad chest in patterns that emphasize rather than obscure his muscular definition. The coverage extends attractively down his arms and legs, creating an overall impression of robust masculinity and physical maturity. This natural hair, combined with his systematic conditioning, suggests someone who has embraced his physicality completely.

In addition to his physical features, one might be able to notice the simply ornamentation that he tends to wear more often than not. A pair of simple bone earrings that dangle from the lobe itself. These were carved from animal bone and are currently markers that that identify him as a wilderness professional while serving as personal reminders of his chosen path.

As for his clothing? He prefers not to wear it, more often than not. At least not to the same degree of others. While he would prefer to be in the nude, for sake of comfort, he tends to dress lightly to save others from embarrassment. Whether it be his set of linen clothing or isuas clothing, and whether he is clothed for civilization or stripped down for tropical comfort, he tends to appear as a man who has chosen his path rather than having it forced upon him, his natural state reflecting preference and philosophy rather than necessity or desperation.

✨Character Concept✨

A professionally trained outdoorsman who views physical mastery as deliberate preparation for magical power. Varryn embodies the philosophy that true power requires proper preparation. He has spent his entire adult life systematically building physical and mental discipline as groundwork for eventual magical study. He's not just a survivalist but someone who has turned survival into a deliberate practice of self-mastery.

Varryn

Postby Varryn on September 4th, 2025, 9:32 pm

General Information :
What is your Name? Varryn

Do you go by a nickname or pet name? Some fellow guides used to call me "Rope Walker" because of my weapon choice, but I prefer just Varryn.

How old are you? 27 years old

What is your height? 6'2"

What is your weight? 185 pounds

Aesthetics :
[b]Describe yourself as you see yourself. I see myself as someone who has methodically built exactly what I need to be - strong, capable, and prepared for the next phase of my development. Every muscle, every skill, every piece of knowledge has been deliberately acquired as part of a larger plan.

Describe yourself as others typically see you. A professional outdoorsman with an unusual intensity about him. People probably notice my size and obvious conditioning first, then realize I'm more thoughtful and systematic than the typical wilderness guide. The fact that I ask a lot of questions about magic tends to surprise them.

What is your favorite body feature? My hands. They're strong enough to handle Korrath and precise enough for detailed rope work. They represent the connection between thought and action that I've been developing.

How physically fit are you? Exceptionally fit. Years of structured bodybuilding combined with practical wilderness work have given me the kind of conditioning that serves multiple purposes - strength, endurance, and the foundation for whatever comes next.

How do you typically dress and what is your style? Practical and adaptable. In Syka's climate, I prefer minimal clothing when possible. For work, I layer what's needed for the environment. My style is entirely functional - every piece serves a specific purpose.

Family :
[b]Who are your parents and what are they like? My father Merin was a professional hunter and guide - patient, methodical, and skilled at reading both terrain and people. My mother Kassa had Drykas heritage and was an exceptional tracker with an almost supernatural sense for weather and danger. They both drowned in a flash flood five years ago.

Do you have any brothers or sisters? No, I was an only child.

What is your extended family like? Uncle Jorik was the most important influence after my parents. He was an explorer and philosopher who understood that true achievement required systematic preparation. He's the one who gave me Korrath and taught me that physical mastery was just the beginning. He died earlier this year.

Do you consider close friends as important or more/less important than family? I value both, but I haven't had many opportunities to develop close friendships. The guiding profession can be isolating. I hope to change that in Syka.

Do you treat animals like family? Absolutely. Korrath isn't just my companion - he's my partner, my brother, and often the most intelligent conversation I have in a day. We've been together for over a decade./spoiler]

[spoiler=Location]Where were you born? Riverfall, in the human quarter.

Where do you live now? I've just arrived in Syka and am still establishing myself.

If you could live anywhere in Mizahar where would that be? Syka seems ideal - it's where practical skills meet intellectual curiosity, where I can contribute while learning. The combination of challenge and opportunity is exactly what I've been seeking.

Do you have a favorite place to vacation or spend leisure time? I've always been drawn to the transition zones - where grassland meets forest, where civilization meets wilderness. Those boundary places seem to hold the most potential.

Where do you fear to be? Trapped in routine without growth. I've seen too many people in Riverfall who stopped challenging themselves and just... stagnated.

Traits :
Do you have any physical weaknesses (disease, scars, and missing limbs?) Nothing significant. Professional scars from rope work and a few deeper marks from wildlife encounters, but they're more like credentials than weaknesses.

Are you right handed or left handed? Right-handed, but I've trained myself to be competent with my left hand for rope dart work.

What languages do you speak? What do you sound like? Do you have an accent? I speak Common fluently and picked up some Tukant from working with Akalak clients. I also know a bit of the Ancient Tongue, in preparation for my magic studies. My voice is measured and deliberate - years of needing to give clear instructions in dangerous situations will do that.

Do you have any odd mannerisms, annoying habits, or other defining characteristics? I tend to unconsciously check my gear placement even in safe situations. I also ask a lot of questions when I encounter something new - some people find it intense.

Do you have (or want to get) any tattoos or piercing? Why do you have them (or will get them)? Just my bone earrings, which mark me as a wilderness professional. I'm not opposed to tattoos if they served a meaningful purpose - perhaps something to mark significant achievements or milestones.

Occupations :
What is your occupation? I'm planning to join the Syka Rangers, starting as a Reserve Ranger and working my way up.

Do you like/dislike your work? Why? I haven't started yet, but everything I've learned about the Rangers suggests it's exactly what I've been preparing for - challenging work that serves a community while developing my skills further.

If you could be anything you wanted to, what would you be? A master of both physical and magical arts - someone who has achieved true understanding of the forces that govern reality.

What occupation do you admire the most? Why? Mages who have achieved genuine mastery. They represent the pinnacle of what systematic preparation and disciplined study can accomplish.

What occupation do you least like? Why? Bureaucrats and paper-pushers. People who create complexity without purpose and who've never tested themselves against real challenges.

Childhood :
What sort of child were you? Curious and determined. I always wanted to understand how things worked and wasn't satisfied with simple answers. I probably asked too many questions about magic and power.

What is your favorite memory from childhood? Working with my father on tracking exercises while my mother pointed out the subtle signs of weather changes. Those moments when all three of us were completely focused on the same challenge.

What is your worst memory from childhood? The day I realized that most adults in Riverfall had given up on their dreams and were just going through the motions of living.

What sort of relationship did you have with your parents? Close and supportive. They encouraged my interests even when they didn't fully understand them, and they gave me a solid foundation of practical skills and ethical principles.

Who was your most influential rolemodel? Uncle Jorik. He showed me that it was possible to be both practical and visionary, to prepare systematically for goals that others might consider impossible.

Education :
What sort of education do you have? A combination of formal instruction in Riverfall and intensive practical training from my family. I learned to read, write, and calculate, but most of my real education came from hands-on experience.

Do you like/dislike learning? I love learning, especially when it builds toward a larger goal. I get frustrated with learning for its own sake, but I'll master anything that serves my ultimate objectives.

Where or how did you learn most of your skills/abilities? From my parents initially, then through professional guiding work and systematic training. Uncle Jorik filled in the philosophical framework that tied everything together.

How do you learn best? Through practice and application. I need to use skills in real situations to truly understand them. Theory is useful, but I learn best when there are real consequences for mistakes.

What are your educational goals for the future? To find teachers who can guide me into magical studies now that I've built the proper foundation. I want to learn magic the right way - systematically and safely.

Relationships :
Do you form close bonds with people? Why? Why not? I think I do, but I've had limited opportunities. My relationship with Korrath proves I'm capable of deep loyalty and partnership. I'm looking forward to forming human bonds in Syka.

Do you trust people easily? If not, why not? I'm cautious but not paranoid. My profession taught me to evaluate people carefully before relying on them, but I don't assume the worst.

Do you consider yourself straight, gay, bi, or something else? I'm attracted to women, but I haven't had many opportunities to explore relationships. My lifestyle has been pretty isolated.

Have you ever been kissed? If so, describe the first time. Yes, by a fellow guide named Sera after a particularly successful expedition. It was nice, but we were both too focused on our careers to pursue anything serious.

Have you ever had sex? If so, describe the first time. Once, with the same woman. It was... educational. I approached it with the same systematic curiosity I bring to everything else, which probably wasn't the most romantic approach.

Drugs and Alcohol :
Have you ever been drunk? If so, describe your first time. Yes, celebrating my first major guiding contract in Riverfall. I learned that alcohol reduces my situational awareness, which makes me uncomfortable.

Do you like to drink on a regular basis? No. I'll drink socially, but I don't like feeling impaired.

What sort of alcohol do you prefer? Something simple and clean - good ale or wine. I'm not interested in drinks that hide their strength.

Have you ever tried drugs (mood altering substances)? If so, which kinds and what did you think of them? Only medicinal plants for treating injuries in the field. I'm curious about substances that might enhance magical perception, but I want to approach that under proper guidance.

What do you think of drugs and alcohol? Be specific. They're tools like any others - useful in the right circumstances, dangerous when misused. I'm cautious about anything that reduces my self-control or awareness.

Likes and Dislikes :
What are your hobbies? Training with my rope dart, physical conditioning, and collecting any information about magical theory I can find. I also enjoy teaching others what I know.

Do you like to read? Very much, though I've had limited access to books. I'm hoping Syka will have better resources.

What annoys you more than anything else? Waste - of time, resources, or potential. People who don't appreciate what they have or who refuse to improve themselves.

What do you find the most relaxing activity to do? Working through rope dart forms at dawn with Korrath nearby. The combination of physical flow and mental focus is meditative.

What kinds of things embarrass you? Why? Making social mistakes due to my limited experience with communities. I know I have gaps in my understanding of how groups work together.

Favorites :
What is your favorite color or colors? The deep blues of dawn sky and the rich browns of well-worn leather.

What is your favorite time of day? Early morning, when the world is quiet and full of potential.

What is the most beautiful thing you've ever seen? The view from a cliff overlooking both grassland and forest - two different worlds meeting in perfect balance.

What do you like to eat? What do you hate to eat? I love well-prepared game and fresh bread. I hate overly processed food that's lost all connection to its natural origins.

What is your favorite type of weather? Does any kind scare you? Clear, crisp mornings with good visibility. Flash floods terrify me - they took my parents.

Outlook :
Are you optimistic or pessimistic? Optimistic but realistic. I believe almost anything is possible with proper preparation and effort.

What are your religious views? I respect the gods who reward effort and growth. I'm not particularly devout, but I understand that divine power is real and should be approached with respect.

Would you be able to kill? Yes, when necessary for protection or survival. But I don't take life lightly.

What are your views on sex? It's another form of human connection and energy that I'd like to explore more fully when I find the right partner. I imagine it requires the same attention and care as any other important skill.

What, in your opinion, makes a successful life? Continuous growth toward meaningful goals, combined with genuine connections to others. Success is becoming the best version of yourself while contributing to something larger.

Actions :
What is the worst and best thing you've ever done? Worst: Not being there when my parents needed help during the flood. Best: Choosing to honor their memory by pursuing my goals rather than giving in to grief.

What is your greatest regret? That I didn't spend more time with my parents and Uncle Jorik while I had the chance.

What is your best/worst memory? Best: The moment Uncle Jorik first explained his theory about systematic preparation for power. Worst: Learning about my parents' deaths.

If you could change one thing about your past, what would it be and why? I would have convinced my parents to stay in safer areas during flood season.

What are you the most proud of doing in your life? Building myself into someone capable of pursuing my real goals instead of just surviving day to day.

Emotions :
How honest are you about your thoughts and feelings with others? Very honest, but I don't share easily. When I do open up about something important, I mean every word.

Do you have any biases or prejudices? I'm probably too quick to dismiss people who seem content with mediocrity. I have to work to remember that not everyone shares my drive for improvement.

What makes you happy? Progress toward my goals, perfect coordination with Korrath, and discovering new knowledge that expands my understanding.

Who or what, if anything, would you die for? Korrath, without question. And anyone under my protection who was truly innocent and needed my help.

What makes you angry? Deliberate cruelty, waste of potential, and people who destroy things they don't understand.

Relationships :
In general, how do you treat others? With respectful professionalism until I understand them better. I try to be helpful and straightforward.

Who is the most important person in your life, and why? Korrath. He's been my constant companion and partner for over a decade, and he represents the living embodiment of Uncle Jorik's gift to me.

Who is the person you respect the most, and why? Uncle Jorik, even though he's gone. He understood that true achievement required vision, patience, and systematic effort.

Do you have a spouse or significant other? If not, describe an ideal lover. No current relationship. An ideal partner would be someone who understands ambition and growth, who has their own goals, and who could be a true partner in exploring both physical and intellectual challenges.

Do you trust anyone to protect you? Who, and why? Korrath, completely. He's proven his loyalty and capability countless times. I'm hoping to develop that level of trust with some of the people in Syka.

Group Situations :
Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict? I avoid unnecessary conflict, but I'll stand firm on important principles. I prefer to demonstrate competence rather than argue about it.

Do you tend to take on leadership roles in social situations? Not automatically, but I will if the situation requires it and no one else is stepping up. I'm still learning how to work with groups effectively.

Do you like interacting with large groups of people? Why or why not? I'm still figuring that out. It's challenging but interesting - like learning a new skill set. I think I could enjoy it once I understand the dynamics better.

Do you care what others think of you? I care about being respected for my competence and integrity, but not about conforming to arbitrary expectations.

What do you think of others, in general? Most people have more potential than they realize, but many are held back by fear or lack of direction. I'm hopeful that Sykans are different.

Self Image :
What is your greatest strength as a person? My systematic approach to improvement. I can break down any challenge into manageable steps and work toward it patiently.

What is your greatest weakness? My lack of experience with social dynamics. I understand individual relationships better than group politics.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I'd want to be more intuitive about reading social situations instead of having to analyze everything systematically.

Are you generally introverted or extroverted? Probably introverted by nature, but I'm working on developing more social skills. I think I might enjoy group interactions once I master them.

Are you generally organized or messy? Extremely organized. Systematic preparation requires knowing exactly where everything is and what condition it's in.

Beliefs :
What God or Goddess do you find most appealing, if any? I'm drawn to deities who reward effort and growth - those who help people become stronger rather than just granting wishes.

Which God or Goddess do you fear, if any? Any deity of chaos or random destruction. I've seen enough of what randomness can do to prefer powers that create rather than destroy.

Do you have any Gnosis Marks? If so, how did you receive them? No, but I hope to earn them when I've proven myself worthy of divine attention.

What lengths would you go to to please your deity? I'd dedicate my life to improvement and service, but through genuine development rather than blind obedience.

Where do you draw the line at pleasing your deity? What is too much? I wouldn't harm innocents or abandon my principles. True divine power should elevate people, not diminish them.

Life & Death :
What do you absolutely live for? The pursuit of mastery - physical, mental, and eventually magical. The journey toward understanding the deepest principles of power and existence.

What is the best part of life? The moment when preparation meets opportunity and you discover you're capable of more than you thought possible.

What is the best part of death? If it comes after a life of genuine achievement, death might just be graduation to the next level of existence.

If you could choose, how would you want to die? Having used every skill I've developed to protect something or someone important, knowing that I held nothing back.

What is the one thing for which you would most like to be remembered after your death? As someone who proved that systematic preparation and disciplined effort can overcome any limitation - that mastery is achievable for anyone willing to pay the price.

✨Character History✨

Varryn was born in 498 AV in Riverfall, the son of Merin, a human hunter who specialized in guiding expeditions into the Cyphrus grasslands, and Kassa, a mixed-blood woman with distant Drykas heritage who worked as a tracker and scout. His parents met when Merin's hunting party rescued Kassa from a Glassbeaks attack on the Sea of Grass, and they settled in Riverfall's human quarter to raise their family.

Growing up in the shadow of the Akalak warriors, young Varryn was fascinated by displays of physical prowess and discipline. He would often watch the blue-skinned giants train in their courtyards, mesmerized by their precise movements and obvious mastery over their bodies. Even as a child, Varryn was captivated by stories of magic and power, constantly asking his parents about the mysterious forces that some people could wield. His father would tell him tales of Drykas Webmages and Akalak battle-mages, while his mother shared legends of the ancient powers that once ruled the grasslands.

"Magic is real, son," his father would say while maintaining his hunting gear, "but it's not something you rush into. The stories all say the same thing: those who try to grasp power without proper preparation usually destroy themselves. Master your body first, then your mind. Only then should you even think about forces beyond the physical world."

These conversations planted a seed in Varryn's mind. The idea that physical mastery was the foundation for something greater, that true power required methodical preparation rather than reckless ambition.

---

As Varryn grew, his parents began teaching him their respective skills. His father trained him in hunting techniques, tracking, and survival skills suited to the grasslands around Riverfall. His mother, drawing on her Drykas heritage, taught him about reading the land, understanding weather patterns, and the basics of moving unseen across open terrain.

During this period, Varryn began developing his philosophy of systematic physical development. He convinced his parents to let him train with some of the human youths who learned from retired Akalak warriors, developing his unarmed combat skills and beginning a disciplined bodybuilding regimen. His acrobatic abilities emerged from his fascination with the fluid movements he observed in both Akalak combat forms and Drykas riding techniques.

The young man's interest in magic never faded, but his parents' teachings about patience and preparation kept him focused on building what he called his "foundation." He collected scraps of magical lore from traders and travelers, storing the information carefully while continuing to develop his physical capabilities.

---

In 515 AV, Varryn's life changed when his Uncle Jorik, his father's brother who had spent years exploring the wild regions beyond Riverfall, returned from an expedition to Falyndar with an unusual companion. Jorik had acquired a young Falivan Elk Dog puppy from a trader who claimed the dog came from a special bloodline bred for jungle survival.

"This is Korrath," Jorik announced, presenting the massive puppy to his brother's family. "The trader called his line bred for size, intelligence, and loyalty. But I'm getting too old for wilderness expeditions, and this boy needs someone young and strong to grow up with."

Korrath immediately bonded with Varryn, and Uncle Jorik began teaching both the teenager and the growing dog advanced wilderness techniques. Jorik had spent time in various dangerous regions, including the edges of Falyndar, and his knowledge expanded Varryn's survival skills beyond the grasslands to include jungle environments.

"The grasslands teach you patience and reading the horizon," Jorik would say during their training sessions. "But the jungle teaches you to think in three dimensions, to move without sound, and to understand that everything around you might be trying to kill you. Both environments will make you stronger if you approach them with the right mindset."

---

In 520 AV, disaster struck the family. During a particularly severe storm season, Varryn's parents were caught in a flash flood while guiding a merchant caravan across a swollen river. Despite their skills and experience, both Merin and Kassa were swept away and drowned. Uncle Jorik, now in his sixties and suffering from old injuries, realized he could no longer care for the young man and his massive canine companion.

"I'm too old to keep up with you and Korrath," Jorik told Varryn sadly. "You've learned everything I can teach you, and more than your parents could have imagined. But you need to find your own path now."

Jorik used his remaining resources to help Varryn establish himself as an independent hunter and guide, but it became clear that Riverfall's opportunities were limited for someone with his particular combination of skills and interests.

---

For the next five years, Varryn worked as a freelance guide and hunter, taking contracts that led him and Korrath across both the Cyphrus grasslands and occasional expeditions to the edges of Falyndar. These experiences broadened his wilderness survival expertise to include jungle environments, while his continued physical training and study of combat techniques developed his other skills.

During this period, Varryn's interest in magic intensified. He collected every scrap of magical knowledge he could find, convinced that his years of physical development had prepared him for the next phase of his journey. However, Riverfall proved to be a poor place for magical education. The Akalak's secretive nature around their own magical practices and the general focus on physical prowess meant that finding teachers was nearly impossible.

His partnership with Korrath deepened during these years. The massive hound proved invaluable on dangerous expeditions, and their coordination in both hunting and combat situations became seamless. Varryn's rope dart technique developed during this time as he experimented with weapons that complemented rather than competed with his canine partner's straightforward approach.

---

In early 525 AV, Uncle Jorik passed away peacefully in his sleep, leaving Varryn truly alone except for Korrath. The old man's death served as a catalyst, forcing Varryn to confront the reality that he had outgrown what Riverfall could offer him. His physical foundation was solid, his wilderness skills were proven, but his magical studies had stagnated.

Among Jorik's possessions, Varryn found journals and maps from his uncle's travels, including detailed notes about a coastal settlement called Syka. The descriptions painted a picture of a place where survival skills were valued, where diverse peoples shared knowledge, and where someone with his unusual combination of abilities might find both purpose and teachers.

"A place where the jungle meets the sea," one entry read, "where strong backs and sharp minds are needed more than noble bloodlines or political connections. If I were young again, I think I'd try my luck there."

---

The decision to travel to Syka represented more than just a change of location for Varryn. It was his graduation from the preparatory phase of his life into active pursuit of his greater goals. Using the inheritance from Uncle Jorik and his own savings from years of guide work, he equipped himself for the journey and the challenges that lay ahead.

Thankfully the voyage wouldn't take all that long. He'd eventually emerge onto the sandy shores of his newfound home with Korrath at his side and his future ahead of him. Nothing could stop him now. Or so he had hoped. This was his beginning.. Now let us turn towards his present day.
