Built into the cliffs overlooking the Suvan Sea, Riverfall resides on the edge of grasslands of Cyphrus where the Bluevein River plunges off the plain and cascades down to the inland sea below. Home of the Akalak, Riverfall is a self-supporting city populated by devoted warriors. [Riverfall Codex]

[flashback] hitting the books

46th Fall of 507 AV

Conrad whistled a cheerful tune as he walked towards the library of riverfall, a handful of papers and some writing and drawing material under his arm.
He squinted his eyes when he stood right in front of him, the reflected ray's of the sun that fell on the embedded minerals in the entrance blinding him a bit.
Not wanting to waste time he quickly walked up to the doors and pushed them open and went inside.

Conrad mouth nearly hit the floor when he saw the amount of books stored in the building, How the heck would he find what he wanted in that?
Conrad just sighed and walked towards the akalak manning the desk.
"Excuse me?" The akalak looked up from the big book he was reading. "Could you tell me where to find books on anatomy and medicine?" Conrad hesitated for a few moments before adding, "And do you have any books about morphing?"
The akalak who was already standing up and ready to go point out where those books where, frowned at the last remark and looked at conrad.
"No we do not have books about that magical subject, I wouldn't lend them to a young child like you if we had them at all." He turned around and motioned Conrad to follow him.
"Now for those medical books you asked about."
Conrad just nodded as he followed the akalak through the library, looking around at the many shelves filled to the brim with books.
"So what kind of race are you looking for? We have quite a bit of info on almost any race." The old akalak said as he stopped before a bookcase.
"Well, just books on humans is good enough."
The akalak nodded and pulled out a worn leather bound book and handed it to conrad. "here is a book about human anatomy, be care full with it its kinda old." the akalak plucked out another book from the case and handed it to conrad.
"If you want to study them here there is a reading hall, just go to the end of this corridor and go to the right, you can't miss it. Now if you excuse me, I have to back to my desk."

[flashback] hitting the books

Conrad carefully set down his books on the desk, not wanting to disturb any of the other people around here.
Sitting down he grabbed the book on human anatomy and opened it on the index quickly searching for the chapter on the workings of the skeletal system.
After having found which page it was on conrad just flipped trough the book until he got to start of his desired chapter.

The human skeleton consists of both fused and individual bones supported and supplemented by ligaments, tendons, muscles and cartilage. It serves as a scaffold which supports organs, anchors muscles, and protects organs such as the brain, lungs and heart. The biggest bone in the body is the femur in the thigh, and the smallest is the stapes bone in the middle ear. In the average adult human, the skeleton comprises around half of the total body weight.

Fused bones include those of the pelvis and the cranium. Not all bones are interconnected directly: the hyoid bone, which is located in the neck and serves as the point of attachment for the tongue, does not articulate with any other bones in the body, being supported by muscles and ligaments.

There are 206 bones in the adult human skeleton, a number which varies between individuals and with age - newborn babies have over 270 bones some of which fuse together into a longitudinal axis, the axial skeleton, to which the appendicular skeleton is attached.

Axial skeleton

The axial skeleton is formed by the Vertebral column ), the Rib cage , and the skull . The axial skeleton transmits the weight from the head, the trunk, and the upper extremities down to the lower extremities at the hip joints, and is therefore responsible for the upright position of the human body. Most of the body weight is located in back of the spinal column which therefore have the erectors spinae muscles and a large amount of ligaments attached to it resulting in the curved shape of the spine. The 366 skeletal muscles acting on the axial skeleton position the spine, allowing for big movements in the thoracic cage for breathing, and the head.

Appendicular skeleton

The appendicular skeleton is formed by the pectoral girdles, the upper limbs , the pelvic girdle, and the lower limbs. Their functions are to make locomotion possible and to protect the major organs of locomotion, digestion, excretion, and reproduction.

Having read trough the rather boring first page Conrad just frowned in confusion, even though he was a rather smart lad there where quite a few words that he hadn't even heard of before. Not getting discouraged he just wrote down the words that he didn't understand put that page apart for later use. Grabbing an other sheet of paper he tried to write down a summary so that he could remember it more easily.
The following hour or two was mostly repeating what he did in the beginning, read a part of the book summarize, rinse and repeat.
Conrad rubbed his tiring eyes as he finished reading a part of the book and just closed it, completely sick of the dry text, also fairly disappointed at the lack of illustrations of the bone structure to help him understand or at least give him an idea about how it looked like. Shrugging he gathered his notition and put them them together quickly numbering the pages so that if they accidentally got mixed up he could reorder them fairly quickly.

[flashback] hitting the books

Conrad rubbed his tired eyes as he finished organizing his notes.
He really didn't want to try and go and study the medicine book, he was already bored to death from studying this stuff, no way in hell that he would go and do another book!
He put the books on a pile and gathered both the still blank paper and his notes in his other hand, awkwardly snatching up the books in his other hand and walked back towards the desk.
He carefully put the books down on top of the desk and looked at the akalak.
"Sir do I need to put the books back myself or.." He was cut of by a handwave of the blue man.
"Just leave them here, We will make sure that they get back to their right place." Conrad nodded, turned around and walked outside of the library.

Thou has written, and thou has completed, so I award thee the following....

Conrad: +1 Investigation, +2 Research, +2 Reading, +1 Rhetoric

Lore: Valkalah Academy, What Books the Library Does Not Keep, Learning What Works Best for Learning Conrad Style, The Human Skeleton: All Da Pieces, How Studying Can Be Draining,

Additional Notes: The wonderful joys of the library. Conrad should have found a little naughty librarian to study with behind the book stacks that no one goes to. Course, he likely would have been caught and likely been throttled by the Akalak staff then. :D
