The Crypt and Undertaker Black Rock rarely gets visitors, but when it does, they need a place to stay. That's where the Crypt and Undertaker comes in handy. Located at the end of the commercial area by the quays, the Crypt is a popular place amongst ghosts as well as the living. Instead of having rooms that rise up, the rooms for guests are in the basement, hence how the place gets its name. The guest rooms are sparsely furnished, with bed(s), a table, two chairs, and a wall-hung basin and faucet accompanied by a small rack for a hand towels and a washcloth. It is not unusual to wake up in the middle of the night and seeing a ghost staring at you through the ceiling... with only their heads visible. Guest rooms do not have their own bathroom, but there are a number of bathrooms that are shared between rooms. The kitchen, dining room, and common room are located on the main floor, along with the bar... the Undertaker. The kitchen is of a decent size with a lot of steel and little wood, with polished copper pots and pans that hang from racks overhead, shining in the light like jewels. This is the domain of Patrick, the chef. The dining room is located off of the kitchen, and has a number of square tables spread throughout the room that can fit a party of four comfortably. Scratched and carved all to hell, they are relatively polished and clean. These tables can be pushed together for a larger party. There is one big table in the corner that goes unused by those who still breathe. Ghosts use it as a court, as it were, and hang around it for long discussions. Dira help those who attempt to use it for other purposes. The common room is comfortable, with chairs and stools and low tables, and is a common gathering place for the living and dead alike to chat if they so desire. The Undertaker, as the bar is called, is located at the far end from the common room beside the kitchen separated by a swinging door, and is a simple enough affair with a polished counter and stools. Tara, Patrick's wife, tends the bar. At night, a number of pirates and sailors, living and dead, often gather to trade stories, much to the interest and delight of those present. For prices, check the price lists. The Crypt and Undertaker only counts as a common inn, and will accept Mizas as well as Ashl. It is one of the few places in Black Rock that will take the Miza. The NPCs Secret : Deirdre Finley: Innkeeper Deirdre, called 'Ma Finley' by most of the locals and regulars, is Patrick's mother and the owner of the Crypt and Undertaker. She and her husband, Aidan, owned the inn and tavern before his death. She taught her son all about cooking, and took over running the rest of the inn after her husband's death, leaving Patrick to run the kitchen. Despite her advanced age, she is spry and energetic, and runs the place with the help of her son and daughter-in-law. She is usually pretty friendly, but certainly won't talk about things that shouldn't be told. She does occasionally play the dottering card when it comes to outsiders. Patrick Finley: Chef Patrick is the chef. Creative and friendly, Patrick puts a lot of work into the food. On Black Rock, variety can be a bit of a problem, and as such, his creativity is tested for both taste and appearance. He likes hearty fare with a flare. When he's not busy in the kitchen, he likes to come out, have a drink, and socialize with the patrons. He is married to Tara, and is the father of Aisling. He used to worry, sometimes, about being a bit too tame for his Svefra wife, but recognizes that he provides a harbour for her. Tara Finley: Bartender Outgoing and talkative, Tara is the bartender of the Undertaker and Patrick's wife. A Svefra, she enjoys putting on a show at the bar and listening (and contributing) to the sea stories that pass around in the evening. Wanted in a number of areas for crimes and piracy, Tara came to Black Rock by accident, and kept coming back until she finally settled down with Patrick. She is the mother of Aisling, a little dark-haired girl who sometimes sits on a stool behind the bar colouring, or with her grandmother, Deirdre. Kass Bercott: Assistant A teenager and a newcomer to Black Rock, Kass moved to the island on her own. Hoping to find the mythical island of the Dead Queen, she put her and her belongings in a dinghy and trusted the water to take her where it would. She ended up so far out on the southern sea that she nearly died, and was rescued by a Charodaen merchant, who with their massive, reptilian mount, guided the teenager to Dira's citadel. Without money or a place to stay, she got a job at the Crypts. She helps wherever she is needed, with Patrick, Tara, Deirdre, or even looking after Aisling. Armed with a morbid streak a mile wide, she is hard working and rather in-your-face. She takes no guff from the guests, and enjoys a bit of standing with the locals.
