This lovely specimen of Drykas raised Benshiran flesh stands just a bit shy of six feet, and has several qualms about using her refined physique to her advantage. Zak has, since a baby, exhibited a complete insensitivity to pain. She cannot feel objects against her skin, or any damage they may be doing, nor can she feel internal injuries. Something is only wrong when blood is pouring or something isn't working how it's supposed to be. Neither temperature nor physical pleasure register either. Except for her tongue. That can feel everything a normal tongue can.

Cautious, Zak's life is a practice in routines. Everything revolves around survival, and once something is proven to help, or at least not hinder that goal, it practically becomes set it stone. As her only personal goal is relatively base, if not basic, the single minded woman has a lot of time to devote to her mistress. Once Akajia made her claim on the child, the young Zak had no concept to differentiate herself from the shadows. Only after leaving the familiarity of her Drykas home and entering an area with completely foreign shades did she realize that they didn't feel the same affection for her. The ones in Eyktol were repulsed by Zak's acceptance of her mother's quest to 'cleanse' the child. The ones in Lhavit were just plain hostile.

Still, there was Akajia's world and there was survival. Reduce to the simplest factors.

Character History :
The years that her mother, Shrahri, told her she spent among the Benshiran tent cities after birth can be counted on one hand, but the traditions of her birth race never faded no matter the distance between her home in the Sea of Grass and the enveloping sands of Eyktol. Memories faded, like so many grains in the breeze, under the vibrancy of her adopted father's familiarly new culture, but not a single custom came to her without Shrahri making sure Zak knew the corresponding ritual from their home land.

Her mother told her that her father was a good man, that none within their people could hope to measure up so her heart had no choice but to find someone that simply couldn’t be judged on the same standards. As far as Ravka went, the Drykas husband that she’d chosen rejection for satisfied all requirements for mate and father. When they finally reached the Sea of Grass, Jarkonas raised Zak as his own, his pavilion welcoming the little sand rat as best they could given her mother’s penchant for maintaining a strict separation between cultures.

The Diamond clan wasn’t the best fit for the uniquely afflicted child, considering the danger that physical contact put her into. Ever on the outskirts, the child amused herself by ferreting out secrets, the knowledge making her feel included in the community. At the age of four, after walking across unseen glass, the ensuing trip to the medic started her medical career off. Only the reverence Drykas hold toward family kept the little sand rat healthy and well, for the most part. It was the pivotal meeting in her late childhood that did the most for her chances of survival.

At the age of eleven Akajia appeared and marked the Benshira as her own. Nothing in the world could have been worst for Shrahri, not even when they’d lost Jarkonas during a hunt. His brother had come back, bearing his gear, and told them that Jarkonas had lost his leg and they’d sent him home to the reincarnation cycle. For three years the two Benshiran women had continued on with their adopted Drykas family, but the Gnosis mark was the last straw. No child of hers would worship anyone but Yahal.

Leaving the Sea of Grass for the trek back to Eyktol didn’t just happen in the blink of an eye, but it did happen quicker than anyone thought it would. During the two years following her blessing from Akajia, Zak got chosen by a strider, Zeitgeist, and welcomed as never before among the Drykas. Busy with her new life, she forgot about her mother's decision to go home, even as the Ankal steered the pavilion toward Eyktol on a trade foray. Arriving at the trade location, Shrahri dragged the child off to the Benshiras camp before the first goods had even been decided upon. As a full member of the Diamond Pavilion, Zak could have demanded she be left behind with her people, but going against her mother that way never crossed the kid's mind.

No matter how much Shrahri loathed the claim that had been laid upon her child, no one could deny that having an entire legion of shade looking out for the eager little mongrel was a negative development. The kid was young and eager to please. It wasn't every day that shadows got their very own little assistant, the fickle beings thoroughly enjoying raising a child of night as they thought she should be.

Time line (sort of, stupid travel times):
490-494 - Eyktol
494-503 - Cyphrus
503-510 - Eyktol
511 - Current - Lhavit

The triangular shaped gnosis mark she'd received from Akajia fit in so smoothly to her windmarks that it was hard to pick out. The tattoos flared out, geometric and stiff, but as they curled around her ribs toward her anterior the lines thinned and smoothed, curling into elegant whirls, like grass carried in the wind,
