[Gnosis] Divination

Postby Alice on February 1st, 2010, 5:25 pm

I don't know whether Goss already started writing Divination up herself, but here is what I have so far. I think there should be a little more variety or originality, but I couldn't think of anything else by now.

So, if anyone has ideas about additional interpretation methods, the negative gnosis marks or other things that should be mentioned please by all means post them. :)

The only idea I've got for the negative side is that the cursed individuals can't be seen in visions, but that's kind of ... blah. Could turn into an advantage, and I don't want that. XD

To Do:
  • add picture(s)
  • add information about negative marks
  • get more original ideas
  • think about information in the box
Constructive criticism is appreciated as always! I know that this still needs a lot of work.

Overview

Avalis, goddess of all seers and fortune tellers, grants some of her worshipers her gnosis Divination through gnosis marks. These blessed are able to see or feel happenings in the future or facts in the present, sometimes even memories of the past. However, while the ability to do so clearly is an advantage, it can also include risks and dangers that should be considered.

Of course the race of the Konti is commonly known as Avalis’ gifted, performing admirable tasks with their abilities and honoring Avalis because she was also their original creator. But there are other sentient races, who can receive a gift from the goddess, although this is rare. Half-Konti are a whole chapter on their own too.

Konti

The Konti, created by Laviku and Avalis Themselves, possess the strongest and most diverse kind of Divination. It can manifest in a variety of different abilities, such as knowing when the certain people are located or seeing memories of random people or objects, thus Konti aren’t limited to foretelling the future, although this is known to appear as well. While all of them get their first gnosis mark at birth, some advance through receiving more gnosis marks. While their specific ability gets stronger and is accompanied by developing side abilities such as limited telepathy, they also experience that controlling becomes harder. Not few Konti have developed odd behavior to cope with the pressure of unwanted information they are constantly exposed to when in public.

Akontak

Since there is a 5% chance that an Akontak is born from a Konti and an Akalak, the chance that they are granted a gnosis mark from Avalis is even smaller. It usually depends on their place of birth, where they are educated and what beliefs they take on. However, Akontak that are blessed with one or more gnosis marks from Avalis possess similar abilities than full-blooded Konti do. Which ability they will get is left to the will of the goddess – nobody can tell in advance what kind of gift she will give her child. Some believe, however, that Akontak often receive more powerful gifts than full-blooded Konti do, but in turn struggle harder to control them, although this theory is heavily debated.

Other Races

As a non-Konti, it is extremely rare to be gifted from Avalis. The goddess is mostly focused on Her children which are also Her most devout followers, but She does grant gnosis marks on other beings every now and then. While she is known to be very generous, the abilities that come with the first and second gnosis marks are not as strong as a Konti’s. Additionally, there is a higher risk of becoming an outcast or even going insane because of a lack of control. Avalis’ gifts are often experienced as a whirlwind of incomprehensible impressions – the biggest problem is to handle all that information, the next to use them wisely. Throughout these marked the probability of losing one’s mind and going insane is much higher because their minds aren’t designed to know what they shouldn’t. They haven’t learned to cope with their abilities and use them to support a community like Konti do.

Interpretation

At the early stages, the marked often finds it difficult to cope with the sheer amount of information exposed to them and is unable to decipher any logical meaning. Therefore, a correct interpretation should always be an important part of Divination, because it will lead to a better understanding of what message Avalis wishes to convey. There are several methods of interpreting a vision which are often similar to dream interpretation. These are three of the most common ones:

  • Association: This is the most common and popular method, since it doesn’t require any tools or specific surroundings. The marked just collects terms or happenings that come to their mind when they think about their vision. Often two or more people discussing the vision and drawing from their experiences is more effective than associating on one’s own.
  • Research: Often visiting a library or bookstore can help a great deal to get information about the content of the vision. For example, if one saw a pirate ship at the sea, they might look for information on pirates and the Suvan Sea, or if a magical artifact appeared, it might be interesting to read about magecrafting and famous artifacts in Mizaharian history.
  • Signs: This method is specifically popular with Konti. Because they worship Avalis, their culture heavily revolves around getting and interpreting signs and messages from her. They often interpret seemingly random patterns in water, fire, cards and falling sticks. The user must only focus on the question they desire to be answered and then use one of the tools. Additional knowledge about how to interpret the patterns is required, although this is usually gathered in complex systems. Learning to understand them can be a difficult and time-consuming task.

It is recommended to try out several methods to find out a few ones that the marked can apply with the most efficiency and the biggest success. Practice is essential, although most people with two or three gnosis marks are usually skilled and experienced enough to determine the meaning of a vision without any doubt.

Risks and Dangers

As was already mentioned, the biggest and also most common risk is that of developing mechanisms like extraordinary behavior, dependency or other psychic diseases in order to protect the mind from the pressure of the gift. Other, more obvious risks include becoming an outcast of society because most people are unsure how to approach someone that knows more than them and will react with suspicion. They will often misuse someone who possesses such abilities – in the most cases this results in the marked experiencing a psychic trauma and becoming highly misanthropic and suspicious themselves. While Konti are seen as natural talents of divination, non-Konti who possess the same gifts are often looked down upon and regarded as liars or quacksalvers.

Gnosis Tables

1 Mark (Marked/Cursed):
Marked: Visions of the Marked are very vague, often only experienced with a single sense (usually sight) and thus more often misinterpreted or utterly senseless than not. However, they should still pay much attention to these visions in order to get better at recognizing important details and at interpreting what they see.

At this stage, the Marked are unable to control where, when or how long they experience a vision.

Cursed:

2 Marks (Favored/Despised):
Favored: Visions of the Favored become clearer and slightly more frequent; additionally they are usually easier to interpret. At this stage, most people will be able to determine their exact meaning, although they still experience them with sight only, accompanied with blurred impressions of sound and smell.

Those marked twice can also force visions if they sit or lie down in quiet surroundings and concentrate on what they want to see. They often slip into their own imaginations first which will slowly turn into real visions. However, its length is still uncontrollable - ten seconds at least.

Despised:

3 Marks (Priestess/Adversary):
Priestess: All visions of the Priestess are very clear in meaning, partly because they are now experienced with all five senses and thus seem very real. One might even touch an object in the vision and then recognize that at the same time they subconsciously touched an object in reality as well. However, certain factors can still leave questions about the exact purpose of the vision to which practice is the only solution.

The Priestess is also significantly better at focusing on special places, objects or people they want to know about, although there still might be a few things they can’t see at all.

Adversary:

4 Marks (Champion/Nemesis):
Champion: A Champion can see everything she wishes. There are no limits to length, number and range. Visions come as easy to as breathing at this stage. However, the possibility of overexertion and burnout very much exists and should be avoided by eating, drinking and sleeping regularly and as much as possible.

I may have an idea for the cursed marks. Instead of being invisible in visions perhaps they could have false visions that lead them astray or even just vision of bad things happening that by the time they get up to 4 marks they're completely insane. -shrug- Maybe?

That would be an interesting suggestion, Danica. However ...

Jen just told me that she already wrote it up, so she's going to post the article very very soon. I gave her permission to incorporate the parts she liked. So this thread is ... closed, more or less.
