Dextren Coolwater

34 Years Old

Physical Appearance

Image"No, don't use the 'W' word. I don't like that title."

Pale, very pale. It is notably uncommon for anybody of Vanthan decent to be colored much like the snows that plague the lands of Northern Taldera, but Dextren is unique in that sense. His skin refuses to take on the standard significant tan colored tint that most of the Vanthas have, and instead tends to look more ghostly than even the naturally whitest skin-colored of human races. As such, he is often mistaken for being not Vantha at all, at least to those who are familiar with typical Vantha appearance.

By Vantha standards, Dextren is fairly average height, with perhaps a few inches in his favor among the race, but that's still small enough to overlooked. Despite his average height, Dextren appearance significantly sickly all the time, which might just be accurate for this odd man. His body is known for looking very thin at times, due to his odd diet and sparse dining times, his pale skin, and boney features. His fingers, due to having little fat to support them, seem oddly elongated. His eyes often appear sunken in, and deep dark rings are often visible around his eyes as a result of lack of sleep, or sporadic sleeping times.

Despite his ill appearance, his hair tends to seem fairly healthy, an unimpressive black color, lengthy, unkempt, and with blatant streaks of gray infecting that mess of hair, which has started much too soon. Yet, hee obviously is either a man cursed with no mirror to see himself, or cursed with the inability to care how close to death he really looks. Overall, his sickly appearance and paleness has often been mistaken for being that of a Nuit in his travels. Perhaps someday that would be correct.

Possibly the most important of all physical features are the extensive tattooing up and down Dextren's arms, both of them. Black ink, permanent of course, creeps and crawls it's way from the palms of his hands and fingertips, all the way up to his neck, just below the jaw. These odd markings, seeming without any noticeable pattern or predictability on a single arm, happen to be identical to the markings on the other arm, except in mirror image, reversed but perfect symmetry when compared to each other. To Dextren alone, each little line represents a path, a map of sorts, but not to any landscape but that to his djed. It is the visual representation of what he feels when working with magic. The most visible of all would be his face, the strange black bars streaking across his forehead, over his left eye, and his left cheek. These markings, as well, seem to be without reason, but of course mean something to him personally.

Character Concept

Image"You can't understand the divinity in my work."

Sanity, it is not with this man. The first thing many people will notice about Dextren is just how exotic his behavior is, and will often wonder how he has lived as long as he has. Thirty something years may be near midlife for a person that dies of old age, but in a world like Mizahar of today, death is beyond common. Early demise is often expected, and when you were as bizarre as Dextren, people expected you to die, any minute, any day, except for the distant future, yet here he remained.

Dextren is what everyone would call emotionally unstable, though he isn't bipolar or highly emotional. Rather, his emotional responses to certain things seem off, or in general, confused. Death does not worry Dextren (that's not to say he has no survival Instinct that drives him to live longer), but simple things like spiders or horses, drive him wild with fear or rage or despair. Losing a friend to unnatural death will maybe shed laughter rather than tears, and discovering lost relics may not even peak his interest in the slightest, where a rock that nature has carved the image of a face into would be a treasured possession for the rest of his life.

The most significant characteristic of Dextren is his eagerness to not only learn, but master the arts of Personal and World magics. He is convinced of his godhood, but not in the sense that he is a god, but that he is supposed to become one. Magics, he has come to believe, are the most important path, the greatest of all powers, and that it even topples the best of warriors and gnosis. Gnosis, Dextren is skeptical of these, powers lent out by the gods, and even though he would accept any gnosis offered to him, he would never rely on one or think of it as part of him. His own greatness must be because of his own undisputed ability, not by another god's strength.

His Story

Image"Home is an illusion, and not even a convincing one."

Dextren is a Vantha, and named Coolwater, yet the accuracy of the name is disputable. Dextren, unlike most of his race, was not born in the embracing chilled arms of Morwen and her beloved city of Avanthal, but rather, far south in the Akalak City of Riverfall. Why his parents, both of full Vantha Blood (making Dextren also a Full Blood Vantha) would travel to Riverfall was never truly explained to Dextren. There was a lot about Dextren's Family that was never explained to him. He was, quite thoroughly, kept in the dark. Secrets, deep dark secrets. Dextren's father knew everything, and even his mother new shards of tales, fragments of stories that Dextren needed to know, but never got the privilege to hear. This angered him.

Born in River, raised on the road. Dextren never learned a permanent language, except for Common thanks to the vast use of that horrendously brutish sounding system of words. Even Vani, who Dextren's mother would always say was the most beautiful of all languages (she was heavily biased in everything she believed in) was only partially learned by Dextren through his youth. Mother claimed it was "His" language, the voice of "His" people, but from an early age Dextren understood he had no people. If he was a Vantha, he would have been born in Vantha-Town, Avanthal. He would have been a fluent speaker of Vani, he would have a gnosis from Morwen to prove she had some knowledge of him, but none of these were true. He was born amongst blue giants, he was a master of the language of human "Mutts", and there wasn't a signal god that paid him any attention, for all he knew.

The first year of his life, Dextren was in Riverfall. The second, he was either on the road, or clinging to his mother's body as they trekked to Lhavit. The third was to Denval, a short stay, that also led them in the direction of Ekytol's glorious burning sands, but his parents became too ill to suffer the heat and turned from that path, though not without severe disappointment. So they traveled back to Riverfall and stayed for several seasons. When Dextren was six, he was introduced to the horsemen of Endrykas. Age of Seven he had a small taste of both Zeltiva (the Kelp Beer included) and Syliras, where his mother grew very ill. They remained among the knights for half a year before Dextren's father took him and moved on to Sunberth, leaving his mother behind to grow healthy. Age of ten, she finally caught up with them, though aged considerably. Dextren didn't really ever reconnect with his mother (not that he ever felt any true connection with either of them).

While in Sunberth, tragedy happened on a number of levels. Rape, Dextren, his father, and his mother became the victims of brutal harassment and an emotional devastation. Perverts, Dextren obviously developed a bitter resentment for them, yet his parents didn't even seem to care what happened to him, to them. They were on a mission, and at the age of Eleven, Dextren understood not what they were doing in specific, but could grasp the concept of them searching for something, trying to fulfill something, or perhaps even fleeing from something. Dextren asked, so many times, but was never answer. Never a word of truth, of falseness, nor even a strike across the face for his continued interrogation. They were sealed.

For the next many years they continued to move around until they were, once again, in Syliras, and again his mother grew ill. Dextren, now a boy of nearly fifteen, broke away from the family of three to be on his own, and Syliras was probably the only reason he survived at that young age. As little more than a boy, he was taken in by the Temple of All Gods, and raised as a good boy, respecting the gods and goddesses that ruled the realm. And it was there that he received his godhood.

In a way.

Dextren had developed and interested condition, a blend of narcolepsy and insomnia. Sleeping disorders that went unchecked, unchallenged, and uncured quickly began to wither the boy's mind, portions of his past began to fade from memory, such as being raped in Sunberth or being racially harassed in Riverfall, yet held strongly the aftermath. The hatred of rapists and perverts remained, but he didn't know why. The powerful fear of Akalak was always there, always strong, but he couldn't recall what made him fear them. This amnesia would remain minor, but never be recovered from. His mind, in compensation for losing memories, gave him filler philosophies. Gods, he was around priests all day for three years, it was only logical that he would wonder about his own greatness, and as egotistical as that may be, he began to feel powerful on a divine level. He knew he wasn't a god, but he believe he could be if he could just awaken that powerful self hidden within him. Like Ivak was trapped away in some cage, Dextren was a cage for another powerful beast, except it was him.

Over the next decade and a half, Dextren would seek out his parents, eager to learn about the truth they never admitted him to know, but their trail was always cold. On his journeys he would pick up many skills right for a god. In Zeltiva he learned Morphing, Auristics, and Projection. In Sahova he managed to grasp a hold of Shielding and Leaching. In Endrykas he picked up numerous tattoos in exchange for working among them, making friends, but never did they leak the knowledge of Webbing to him. Today, now that he had aged significantly, he has given up on his quest to hunt down his mother and father. At their age, it would be unlikely for them to even be alive, let alone hunting down whatever it was they were always running towards or from. Dextren had a new goal, to awaken the god inside him.
