The Wilderness of Cyphrus is an endless sea of tall grass that rolls just like the oceans themselves. Geysers kiss the sky with their steamy breath, and mysterious craters create microworlds all their own. But above all danger lives here in the tall grass in the form of fierce wild creatures; elegant serpents that swim through the land like whales through the ocean and fierce packs of glassbeaks that hunt in packs which are only kept at bay by fires. Traverse it carefully, with a guide if possible, for those that venture alone endanger themselves in countless ways.

11th of Summer 511 AV, late afternoon

The Sea of Grass was peacefully quiet. Aside from the occasional scuffling animal or whistling breeze, a woman could rest in complete silence. It was one thing she sometimes missed about her life before; in Endrykas it was nearly impossible to find somewhere totally quiet. It was the nature of a city without walls to have residents that didn’t care much for privacy. There, everyone’s lives washed over into the others, a flood of muddy waters rushing from different directions to create a murky stew that sometimes left Amelika feeling like she was being drown. The young Drykas was more introverted, and as she stared thoughtfully at the brilliant blue sky, she imagined that from a bird’s perspective Endrykas might look less like the separate tents and pavilions that it consisted of, but one writhing and ever changing organism. At times, she wondered how she fit into that organism, if she even fit at all.

From where she had set up her simple camp, Amelika could see Jeryko grazing in the long grass, and the tent city not too far away across the horizon. She wasn’t stupid enough to wander far away from the city’s protection. For now, the weather was nice, so she had left her tent set up in Endrykas and brought only her bedroll and a backpack full of food and other supplies she would need for the next few nights. She probably wouldn’t stay for longer than a day or two, all she needed was to get away. Away from children playing, and the baying and stamping of the horses that followed the men and women around. Not to mention the many different smells of herbalists and blacksmiths, stables and wrestling wrings; she would never miss the stench of so many people living so close together.

Here, it was possible to wander for days and not see a soul - unless you knew the Web well enough to notice a presence, you could even pass another rider not too far away without even noticing they were there. She enjoyed the solitude, because it was something she didn’t get often. In no way was Amelika a social person, and when she had first moved to Endrykas she had suffered trying to make a home for herself and set up connections so she could support herself with the little hunting she did. She wished that she could spend longer than a few days hunting, but she had bitterly come to accept that she was not skilled enough to truly gain the independence she craved. Though she would be happy to spend the whole summer roaming the Sea on her own, she realized that if she tried she would most likely end up being killed after just a few days.

At least for now, she was content to nestle into her bedroll. She wasn’t sleeping yet - it wasn’t even dark out - but the bed beneath her was soothing and the warm sun relaxed her tense muscles in a way that was impossible when she was surrounded by a crowd of people. Tucked into the bottom of two gently sloping hills, her little hole gave her a place to curl up in and be protected from the wind. The heat made her drowsy, and when Amelika’s eyes slowly began to droop she let them, feeling confident that her strider would alert her if there was danger approaching. She doubted she had anything too serious to worry about anyways, being closer to Endrykas than a glass beak or a Zith would feel comfortably. Though Jeryko was as curious and friendly as a horse could get, he was also a scaredy-cat and she could count on the palomino stallion alarming her by prancing back, snorting and kicking up dust, if he found anything that worried him.

Sweet Escape (open)

Inirria was asleep, buried comfortably in the grass in a ball of fur and wings, curled around her meager belongings and two weapons. She was within a kilometer or so of the tent-city of Endrykas, she had seen so just before dusk that day, yet she had still settled down for sleep. She was too exhausted after her long flight to bother with adequately burying herself in dead grass and dirt, but if anyone came upon her or disturbed her, she would have no qualms with ripping out their throat.

Such was the life of a Zith like her; a wanderer with no colony except in name only. She couldn't afford to let one of the man-horses see her and kill her. Yet, even with that knowledge, she'd still curled up to sleep there.

With a small smile, the Zith's settled in for more sleep. She had about another bell for the sun to be gone, and she had no desire for that to change. She was nocturnal and she needed sleep. Something she'd been skipping for two days already.

Her nose twitched, catching a scent, her ears heard the deep breathing of a horse. It was one of those Drykas and his beast. As long as he didn't come near her, she was fine. Her grip found her sword hilt anyway and she pulled it close to her dark body. She remained still, listening and breathing, sensing for any sudden attack. All was quiet. All was still. If she wanted to get a good view of her disturber, she'd have to keep track of them in case they moved. She'd make sure to keep her eyes on them. They couldn't have been old if they didn't come at sensing her presence. Not at all.

She could have fun playing with a Drykas brat.

A smirk curled her lips and she snuggled into the grass further.

oocblaaah, sorry for the delay but i'm visiting family right now and i've been pretty busy. the only reason i have time now is cause my cousins are watching a movie... for the third time in the last four days :\ lol

Amelika took a deep breath, enjoying the smell of the fresh air and sweet grass. Looking up at azure sky, she counted only a handful of small, curling clouds floating past, joined by a couple of hawks that were flying so high they looked like little black dots. It was a beautiful day on the Sea of Grass. Still, Amelika was well aware that the winds that gave her reprieve from the sun's baking heat could also bring storm clouds. While she was lost and confused when it came to reading and communicating with people, the weather was something that could be predicted easily, if you knew how. Of course, Amelika was no professional, but she had learnt how to read the wind and the clouds when she was a young girl and use them to predict the mood of the sky. She could still remember some of the basics - clouds at night generally means warmth, not rain; winds toward the Suvan in the west means good weather, but winds from it usually bring storm clouds. High, curly clouds like today's were a sign of good weather.

Suddenly bored of sitting still on the ground, Amelika jumped up from her bedroll and ran over to her horse. She had taken off the yvas off of Jeryko - it was lying on the ground by her bed - and his pale golden flanks glistened prettily in the sun. For a moment, she felt the urge to wrap her arms around his strong neck and swing right up onto his back at a run. But she was no acrobat. Of course, she could mount and ride a horse bareback, but that kind of flare meant a little practice, and it really wasn't something Amelika cared for. As she closed the gap between them, she saw Jeryko's ears twitch in her direction at the thudding noise of her footfalls. A small mischievous grin came to her face.

A noise close to a squeal came from the skittish strider as she tapped him lightly on the rump. Kicking up his back legs, Jeryko pranced away a couple steps only to wheel around and glare at his rider. His expression could only be described as a death glare, causing Amelika to chuckle. Her horse was her best, and only, friend. As she held out her hand, the palomino reluctantly trotted over to her, nudging her hand with his nose. He let her stroke the soft fur around his mouth and nose, then scratch the white striped up his forehead before carefully guiding her hands to his neck. Once again, Amelika couldn't help but laugh as she scraped his favourite spot, just along his mane, with her fingernails.

She continued to rub his neck and sides, until she noticed his feet shuffling uncomfortably. Glancing up at his face, Amelika saw that his nostrils were flared and his ears twitched in the direction of the grass, somewhere to the right of her camp and in the opposite direction of Endrykas. "What is it? What do you smell?" she whispered to the horse as she peered in that direction. She squinted her eyes, trying to look for any unnatural movement in the tall grass but finding none. Nervously, she walked towards her camp, hand on Jeryko's flank as he reluctantly followed her. Her senses were now alert, and as she got closer to the source of Jeryko's discomfort they screamed at her to turn around. Her bow and arrows were resting beside her bed, though, and at the very least she didn't want someone snagging them.

Sweet Escape (open)

Postby Inirria on July 23rd, 2011, 5:26 am

Inirria sleepily adjusted her position in the grass, adjusting her wings and turning to lay back on her other side, then turning again. She was too distracted to sleep now. That Drykas and her horse were annoying. Her ruby eyes opened into slits, and she was glad her face wasn't facing the waning sun. Slowly, the Zith rose and stretched in the fashion of a feline, popping bones and cracking stiff joints before straightening into a crouch.

She had spent days awake, against the nature for her species, and still she felt a thunderous headache at the brightness surrounding her. She blinked a few times, urging her inhuman eyes to adjust, before she inhaled the scents on the breeze for traces of the Drykas. She was still too sleepy to tell what she was smelling, so she cocked her head and listened.

The quiet stamp of a horse's hooves, the breathing of both horse and human, floated into her ear and coaxed a tiny smile to her lips. She got low to the ground and began to creep towards the sounds, her eyes slitted painfully as she tracked the sounds, trailing behind an unwitting Drykas, or so she supposed.
