Benacer Stalbarg

(Image Pending)

Basic Information

Race: Human
Birthday & Age : 28th day, Winter - 486AV (24 years old)
Gender: Male
Height: 179 cm (~5'11")
Weight: 84 kg (185 lbs)

Physical Description

Benacer stands 5'11" tall, somewhat above human average height, but not remarkably tall. His skin is of a fair tone, and his brown hair is usually kept short and trimmed, not mainly for aesthetic purposes but also because long hair can be a disadvantage at times in fights. His facial hair is also kept trimmed or clean shaven. His build is well toned and muscular, a result of years of involving himself with strength-demanding tasks. His eyes are blue-grayish in color, though not particularly striking, they can be somewhat intimidating at times. Benacer does not bear tattoos. He carries smaller scars scattered around several areas of his body, mainly on his arms, and two more visible ones: A transversal one crossing his right chest from a few inches close to his right shoulder towards his navel and ending close to his sternum, and the other one is located on his scalp, at the right side of his head, being sometimes visible through his short, trimmed hair.

He is mostly seen wearing inexpensive clothes, usually a tunic of opaque colors, leather pants and shoes. Sometimes he also wears a woolen cloak used to protect himself from the bitter cold of winter. He usually carries a large waraxe attached to his back by a leather hold, a choice of weapon which may be seen by many as brutish and uncivilized on the streets of the large cities of Sylivra. He also frequently carries a small and antique amulet that brings him memories of the past, usually worn as a necklace. It is round and metallic, likely having no more than 4 centimeters of diameter, a family heirloom that previously belonged to his father.

Character Concept

"Most people simply hide behind a mask of morality, they oppress their real selves. They are afraid of being rejected for being who they really want to be. I was one of them, but no longer have I such fears. Everyone has a dark side hiding somewhere, urging to be released. Order and morals keep such darkness concealed. But what are such people doing other than simply hiding themselves from reality? They are living false lives and are unprepared to deal with the real world. As much as they alienate the truth, sooner or later they shall be struck by chaos, and when it happens, some will be prepared to face the truth, while others will perish under fear, despair and insanity."

Benacer is a somewhat mysterious figure at times, for despite his looks he does not behave as the stereotypical bully and impatient type, in fact, he is almost always calm, and it is quite hard to get him angered. Benacer is usually rather patient, and frequently analyzes the environments he gets himself into cautiously, trying to figure out a way to exploit the most out of them and end up with as many benefits and advantages as possible. One may judge Benacer as a peaceful and good-spirited person due to his calm nature, but that is likely far from the truth, as Benacer frequently is greedy and selfish, and will try to make full use of his deceiving looks to take advantage of other people. It does not mean that Benacer is unable to be a good and loyal friend, but it certainly is hard knowing to what extent he is being honest or deceiving, and many will likely avoid any sort of relationship with him when his self-centered behavior is revealed.

In many situations Benacer will act with the mind of a greedy businessman, trying to gain the most and lose the least with his choices. He will likely not fight unless he finds that he has more to gain by doing so, as with many of his actions. As such, he does not care much about honor and morals, and he may very well turn against a friend at times unless such friendship is highly valued or has a deep, potential importance to him. He rarely will hesitate on breaking someone's heart if his nature suggests that it's the best thing to do.

Due to his nature, Benacer prefers larger cities over small villages, for in villages stories spread rather quickly, and he would obviously become hated just as fast, while in cities people are more numerous and easier to exploit. He keeps on his mind that if people from a region begin hating and having him struggle to live his normal life, he could simply move on to another location where he would be unknown. On his mind he can always start over, and albeit frequently carrying his father's amulet, he is not the kind of person that is far too attached to his past.

Character History

Born in a town somewhere around central Taldera, Benacer had quite a joyful childhood, those were most likely the best moments he's had in his life. His father, Rorick, worked as a lumberjack and carpenter, while his mother took care of domestic affairs. Benacer had many friends, and he divided his time between playing with them, studying, and aiding his father on his duties. He also had a sister, Annia, with whom he always shared his thoughts.

When he turned 13, Benacer had to dedicate even more time to helping his father with his job, usually by aiding him on selling his goods. He began realizing that life was changing quickly, and hoped that it would be for better. He would soon become a man, perhaps manage his own gold and find a woman to marry. He did not expect his life to change as much as it would, he had the dreams that every other average boy of the town folk had. He was too naive to understand how life truly worked.

As a couple years passed, his father had got himself into some financial trouble with loan sharks, and needed to work extra time to pay his debts. He was an avid gambler and he obviously lacked the money to fund his bets. Fooled by the possibilities of multiplying his funds, he acquired heavy debts to pay. Obviously, Rorick expected Benacer to work substantially more as well to help paying the debts, but the increasing work was tough, and draining Benacer of any left free time. He no longer could enjoy spending time hanging with other kids, he was not free to do much other than working. Benacer was usually left with the more strength-demanding jobs, such as chopping wood, while his father worked mostly on shaping the wood with his carpentry skills. Confronting his father concerning the tough work was useless, as Rorick was too angered about his debts, and did not care if the lad would have to work as a slave to save his family from bankruptcy. The town folk noticed that Benacer always seemed to be working as hard as his young body allowed him to, but naturally nobody did anything to help it. Benacer spent the following years working full time, having little time to spend with his mother or sister. He began hating his father more than he ever could, he simply didn't feel that it was fair for him to work as a slave to help his father pay the money that he threw away with gambling.

On a winter night, when Benacer had just turned sixteen, mysterious men broke into his home, not caring about the noise they were making. They were armed, and wanted the money Rorick owed them. Naturally, regardless of how hard they worked, father and son could not collect enough money to pay the enormous debt. The men beat Rorick, and slashed Benacer's chest with a knife for attempting to protect his sister. Luckily, the men gave up on the idea of harming his mother and Annia, but it remained unsure if they would be as merciful on a future encounter. It was clear, however, that they no longer were willing to wait, they wanted their money immediately. In the following morning, Rorick confronted Benacer, blaming the kid for everything, calling him filthy names and claiming his work to be sloppy. Benacer was rather angered due to his father's behavior, but did not try to confront him. The lad was beaten and ordered to go work. He left his home furiously, while also hearing his mother's screams coming from inside. It was obvious that his father was also treating her and Annia just as badly.

A few days later, both father and son left in the morning to work. Benacer had already been planning to escape, life there was hopeless. His father was mad and condemned, and he was also willing to take his whole family to his grave. The loan sharks would not have mercy, they would not hesitate on hurting Benacer's family just with the purpose of angering Rorick. He had talked to his sister about running away several times, but she would always refuse the idea of running away. After a couple hours of work along with his father, for a brief moment, Benacer decided to drop his heavy axe on the floor to go drink some water on the river nearby. When coming back, he found his father slaughtered, and his axe thrown on the floor, soaked in blood. It was a remarkable scene. He experienced a storm of feelings for a brief moment while beholding the dead body of his father. Fear, joy, relief...and sadness. He could never understand how could he be sad, for he was free from the monster that ruined his life and treated the rest of his family as filth. Nonetheless, somebody from the town spotted him holding his blood-soaked axe, staring at his dead father, and a scream echoed through the trees. "Son brutally murders father" were the breaking news heard through the whole town.

Benacer was worried about his mother and sister. It was possible that the loan sharks had visited his home before coming for his father, so he decided to go back home as fast as he could. Upon rushing through the wooden door, his mother and sister screamed and expelled him. He was told to go away, never to come back, not even given a chance to explain what had happened. Was not it obvious that the loan sharks decided to murder him for not paying his debts? Nobody cared. They knew of his hatred, for he always openly talked rot about his father and their lives, and it was clear that he planned on leaving soon. He did not understand how could they have loved that monster despite all he had done, he could not understand why was he sad for beholding his dead father, even if it was for a brief moment. His father was everything he hated the most in his life, and he was gone. What left him mostly heartbroken though, was seeing Annia wanting him to disappear, even she who was his closest friend and beloved sister had turned her back on him...because of that monster! He felt betrayed. Benacer packed up a few torn clothes, grabbed his axe and a loaf of bread. He done as they asked, he never came back.

"For moments I ask myself...was I really the one who murdered him, as they claimed? Much of what happened that day still seems blurred and confusing to me. I certainly had the wish to do so. I would never regret having done it. He got what he deserved."

Benacer travelled for a long time without a clear destination. It took him a few years traveling and stopping on several different places to the southeast until he finally settled down in a city: Syliras. However, he did not stay there for more than a couple of years, he decided to further travel southeast, reaching Sunberth. There he learned some brawling the hard way, and his woodsman's axe was handy for protection for as long as its frail wooden haft remained intact. He would spend many of the following years in that city, living as he could.

Life on the streets of Sunberth was not easy, but Benacer had matured much since leaving his home town. He was 19 years old now, and no longer needed anyone to look over him. He had learned from his past not to rely on other people too much. He had a few friends, the most remarkable one being Kalma, a woman, as poor as him, who much resembled his sister on appearance, but little on personality. He hardly succeeded on gaining money by begging and stealing, but luckily one of his friends managed to get him hired for a new job, which could get him enough mizas to get him some stability, a guarantee for food and shelter. Kalma was also rewarded with a similar duty as his, which was the perfect opportunity for the both of them to get further involved in a more serious relationship.

Both were employed to gather information on the streets, working under a local band of criminals. Such a job involved the eventual interrogation, intimidation, among other tasks. Their relationship flourished as they worked together. After a few days Benacer found himself in love with Kalma, and she seemed to feel the same way for him. For the first time the lad could experience real love, and finally thought to have found someone who he could really trust, sharing his deepest secrets with the woman.

After a few seasons under this job he had to flee the city, however, for Kalma was offered money by a rival faction to expose him, and so she did. Albeit he loved her like no one else in his life, albeit they had shared wonderful times. Betrayed once more. He had learned as no other man that it is useless to be attached to people. He was too naive, but now he could see what he had been doing wrong though his whole life. He realized that in reality humans would always betray and deceive to reach their goals, for that is what people truly are, despicable creatures.

Benacer then fled to Zeltiva, and visited several other places in Sylira, until winter of 509 AV, when he decided to return to the city of Syliras. He had some money now, and probably would get to afford a better life there. He expected to find opportunities to gain some mizas, and it was also a good way to run from his old lifestyle.

"As harsh as it all may have turned out to be, I do not regret my choices of the past. They are to blame for building my current self and opening my eyes to secrets that could have otherwise gone unnoticed."
