While Sylira is by far the most civilized region of Mizahar, countless surprises and encounters await the traveler in its rural wilderness. Called the Wildlands, Syliran's wilderness is comprised of gradual rolling hills in the south that become deep wilderness in the north. Ruins abound throughout the wildlands, and only the well-marked roads are safe.

Wildland Justice (Solo) 23.W.509

The 23rd Day of the Season of Winter, 509 AV.

“There is no way we’ll get the horses in there…”

No sooner had Bohdai stated the obvious, than a nearby tree sprouted a new branch. A man cursed behind the Dhani, and the sound of an arrow being drawn from a quiver followed.

“Go!” Veral cried, tossing Sidewinder’s reins to his companion, and spurring his own mount away.

Bohdai slapped Sidewinder’s rump as another arrow buzzed past his ear. His Leopardbred galloped away, carrying most of Bohdai’s worldly possessions away, but the Dhani knew the horse wouldn’t get far. Several more voices cursed as they watched the horses and a rider disappear, but Bohdai remained.

His first thought was to charge the bandits, but reason quickly took over instinct, and he ducked into the dark depths. The light of the sun soon became too dim to see by, but Bohdai was quite safe by that point. He could hear an argument echoing through the twisting hall of the keep.

“He’s got a sword!” One voice yelled. “I could use me a sword!” The others argued back, until one voice rose above the rest.

“He’s one man, and trapped in that hole.” This voice was calm, intelligent, and somewhat high, though the echoing made it difficult to tell. “The five of us could pin him in there easily.” The argument ended with that, and the ringing of boots was all that followed.

Quickly, Bohdai stripped, storing his belongings in a nearby alcove. The air was musty, but warm, despite the winter. With exaggerated care, he leaned his sword and shield against the wall, and began to change. The muscles of his chest and arms bulged, and his neck swelled. The skin of his legs began to flow together, and the bones began to elongate with sickening cracks and pops. The Dhani’s eyes rolled up into his head and he transformed, eyebrows and eyelashes growing eerily backwards into his face.

Bohdai sighed when his transformation was complete. If only the euphoria could last a time more. He thought, as he took up sword. In this massive form, his preferred form, the bastard sword he carried felt smaller, but he felt that the basic movements would be much the same the hilt was now barely long enough for both his hands, but he would still be capable of delivering devastating blows.

“What was that?”

Bohdai’s scales slithered eerily against the dust-covered stones as he crept deeper into the darkness. The interior was now clear to his enhanced vision, and his thin lips pulled back to reveal hideously sharp teeth. There is much glory in killing five men alone.

The first to turn the corner crumpled immediately. The bandit fell into a puddle of his own blood to add another stain to his wardrobe. Blood trickled down the length of Bohdai’s blade, to join the growing puddle in a steady drip. The second bandit, for only two of the group had been sent down this corridor, cried out in alarm. The underground ruins mockingly returned his shout a thousand-fold.

More shouts from deeper within the structure answered their companion, who was soon to join his perished friend. Bohdai’s massive tail launched the Dhani around the corner to face his latest victim. Bohdai’s super-sensitive eyes picked out the outlaw’s expression. Eyebrows rose then fell, and the man’s face went slack as the sheer mass of Bohdai revealed itself as a black deeper than the surroundings.

Muscles tensed and bulged beneath Bohdai’s tanned skin, and lashed out. Steel arced through the dark, the sharpened edge splitting air in a sharp whistle. Somehow, some way, the outlaw brought his spear to bear. Sword and spear haft vibrated with the collision, filling the hall with an odd clapping sound as wood and steel met repeatedly.

Sensing an opportunity, Bohdai pushed his blade towards the outlaw, keeping his blade between the spear and himself. Bohdai snaked forward as he pushed, bringing himself within grasping distance. The Dhani lashed out with his left hand. His large mitt closed around the outlaw’s spear, and Bohdai’s great strength came to bear.

Using the outlaw’s own weapon for leverage, Bohdai slammed the weaker man into a wall. The air rushed from his chest in a sigh, and the man’s muscles went soft. The Dhani leaned his weight against the spear. The human’s breastbone groaned and his lungs fluttered as he fought for breath. The thuds of boot steps drew Bohdai from his momentary lapse. The Dhani ended the man quickly, his teeth sinking into his neck, just as the rest of the outlaws turned the corner.

Bohdai withdrew his fangs from his victim’s neck, and turned to face his newest adversaries. The foremost figure of the three whipped a weapon up, pointing it in Bohdai’s direction. The Dhani moved quickly, and threw himself from the wall. Pain exploded in his left shoulder, filling his vision with white.

“Got him!” The bandit shouted, but his exclamation was drowned out by Bohdai’s roar of pain.

The white faded to be replaced with a rim of red. Bohdai’s vision cleared just enough for him to intercept and incoming blow. The tip of his blade caught the axe head enough to avoid harm. The axe carried on, however, dragging Bohdai’s weapon down and away. The Dhani released his weapon, in the interested of doing what he did best.

His tail twisted to back him away from the axe-man, who readied himself for another blow. As the axe came up, Bohdai straightened his tail, forcing his bulk forward. The Dhani’s groping left hand curled around the axe-man’s wrists as his right curled into a fist. Foul breath washed over Bohdai as his natural weapon drove the air from the outlaw. The outlaw’s axe came free with a tug of Bohdai’s left hand.

An arrow whizzed over Bohdai’s shoulder as he drew his fist back for another blow. (He would later swear he could feel the fletching tickle his cheek.) Glemmbohdai’s arm snapped out, and bone crunched beneath his fist. With his left hand, he brought the axe up, not caring how, or where it hit. Bone crunched again, and the outlaw crumpled before Bohdai.

The Dhani looked up from his newest kill, to find one outlaw before him. Footsteps faded fast down the hallway, but neither paid them any heed.

“Where is the man?” The outlaw asked. His voice was oddly pitched, the same who had given orders.

That seems days ago.

Bohdai gave no reply save to break the arrow off just above the head. A pop, then two, echoed from the vicinity of his tail. The scaly appendage began to split into two, and rush to meet his body. In half a minute, the pops and snaps ceased, leaving Bohdai in his human form. Calmly, he took up his blade.

The interior was dimmer now, much less clear than it had been. Still, Zinrah was quite dark, not unlike this fort, and the Dhani had lived there much of his life. Darkness was him home.

The outlaw drew his steel, and brought it to bear. Bohdai stepped over the corpse before him, and their blades met.

Steel kissed steel in a dance of death. Bohdai and his partner wove through the bodies scattered along the corridor. Slick puddles of blood slowed the dance in some places, but the Dhani’s bare feet remained under him. The man fought valiantly. Despite the darkness his blade caught all of Bohdai’s blows. Twice, he even penetrated Bohdai’s defenses to leave a new mark upon the Dhani’s skin.

However, as the fight wore on, Glemmbohdai’s superior endurance and strength began to show through. The arrow wound he had received earlier, however, weighed on him. To him, each of his swings felt heavier than the last, and he knew that this battle would have to end sooner, rather than later.

He parried the next blow, and, remembering a trick he had seen in the past, allowed his muscles to lax. His foe, seeking the advantage, pushed forward, but his shorter blade became caught on Bohdai’s crossguard. Perfect.

With some awkwardness, Bohdai twisted his wrists. The long point of his bastard sword fell short of the man’s face, but a slash was not Bohdai’s intent. The twisting length of steel brought the Dhani’s blade to the top, and forced the human’s safely low. Bringing his left foot forward, Bohdai drew his blade back with a single hand.

His left hand came up with his left leg to grasp his bastard sword midway down its length. Gripping it firmly with his hands, he drove forward with all his might. The steel plunged downward and forward, striking the man where the throat met chest.

Bohdai wiped his blade clean on the man’s jerkin, and set about inspecting his handiwork. His hands, exploring various pockets, found that the freshest of the corpses was too soft and round to be a man. He winced, but continued his search, expanding to search the other bodies. He kept any coins he found.

The morbid task of searching done, he tore strips of cloth from one man’s cloak (fortunately unbloodied), till he had enough to bind his wounds. The cloth wrapped awkwardly about his shoulder, and limited its mobility, but he doubted the one bandit that fled would return.

Unhurriedly, Bohdai retrieved his belongings, and returned to the surface. The chill sent shivers down his spine, but he hurriedly scooped snow up and scrubbed at his body until the worst of the blood was gone. He dressed back belowground, where it was warmer. Fully dressed, he exited the fort, now a tomb, and left to find Sidewinder.

Bohdai
Experience: +2 Sword, +1 Unarmed Combat (for the biting/tail swiping)
Kill Record: 5 Outlaws
Additional Notes: I found this thread very unrealistic. You had the outlaws come at you one at a time, even though there were five of them, plus you let them give you time to change twice without being seen. Next time, have a fight moderated, meaning get a DS or AS to run your bandits. The fighting you did write about, however, was very detailed. This would have been a good PVP scenario. Also, your PC now has a significant shoulder wound.
