It was nearly noon as Man and Strider raced and dipped along the plains, moving as one swift blur across the landscape. They slowed gradually, Nightwind's hooves barely touching the ground.

They changed to graceful serpentines, bending the stallion around his knee, testing the shifting balance between. The morning light shown on them, raising a light sheen of sweat on both. Bolden shifted slightly, somehow sitting deeper. The gorgeous chocolate animal transitioned beautifully into a delicate piaffe, as though dancing above the ground.

Clop clop. Clop clop. They swayed in time to the age old cadence of ultimate trust between man and beast. Nightwind kept a perfect neck bend in an exquisitely parallel arch while his knees flexed with fluid motion.

The Denusk man concentrated and lost himself in the movement. His legs ached from the daily practice they'd been at since dawn. Sweat trickled and tickled down his spine unheeded.

His Yvas and shirt lay nearby on the ground in a neat pile next to his waterskin. Nightwind started to blow and Bold immediately signaled him to a walk and told him to stretch out his neck and back. As the Strider did so, the rider did like wise, raising his arms above his head with a spine cracking stretch.

He slid from the stallion's slick and sweaty back and slapped his neck affectionately.

"Nightwind you're amazing! You da Strider! The stallion!" He chuckled, stoking the beast's already high self esteem.

"What mare could resist you huh?"

The magnificent stallion nickered an answer and arched his neck and tail proudly, soaking in the praise as his due.

"Let's have a lick of water and some lunch hm? And don't get greedy with the water--the last thing you need is colic!" Bold teased the Strider, though he knew the stallion had far more sense than that.

The proud young Denusk walked over to the water skins and picked them up. Of course there was a regular one for him and a much larger one for the Strider. He wiped the sweat from his face with a blue rag and brought their things over.

He set the opened the water skin on the ground for his companion and sat in the high grass to chew some dried meat and relax. The tall grass moved in an unbroken wave like water along a shoreline. A light breeze lifted the sweaty curls along his neck and forehead and he smiled. Bolden watched Nightwind as he moved a step away to graze on the choicest shoots, near the roots. The azure sky above them formed a breezy ceiling that lazily chased the high clouds like herds of horses.

Training on the plains (Jalen, Open)

Postby Jalen Cleardawn on July 20th, 2011, 12:16 am

The sudden stop of Lily's smooth gait roused Jalen from her trance. The sheen of sweat on her face kept tendrils of her long, mocha hair plastered to her forehead and cheeks. She pried her swollen blue-green eyes open and surveyed the plains before her. Miles and miles of endless grass stretched before her and her Strider. Jalen's face collapsed into an expression of despair as Lily released a short, weak nicker to comfort her. She wrapped her arms around the base of her companions neck, and gave into her need to wail out in pain.

It had been merely weeks since the devastation that wrought the Cleardawn and Blackwood Pavillions. The empty sensation in her heart and the pit of her stomach clashed with her anger, leaving her with the desire to simply scream and fight and sleep. Unfortunately, even sating these yearnings and seeking vengeance would not bring them back.

Jalen thought of her mother and father, her siblings, her beloved... She had been so close to marriage, and it was ripped from her by the poisoned talons of the Zith. Tighter she squeezed Lily, eliciting a barely audible gasp from the animal.

“Lily, move.” Jalen pleaded, but to no avail. “Lily, please, we must keep moving.”

Lily prodded the ground with a hoof, and tossed her head back, shaking Jalen’s grip. The salty tears mixed with her sweat as she began to swear in Pavi, but she halted her words. There, in the distance, sprinted the most marvelous animal she had yet to see besides her own.

A Strider and it’s companion, gliding across the plains with masterful design. The pit in her stomach curled and produced a knot that jolted up into her throat. Again, Lily prodded, awaiting the young woman’s order. With a soft nudge, she prodded Lily forward as she hugged her neck, nestling her face into her mane. On they rode, towards the man and his beast.

The stallion suddenly lifted his head, raising his muzzle to the sky. His nostrils worked as his ears twitched and his mahogany eyes scanned the horizon.

Bold saw the stallion's alert position and quickly moved to stand by him.
'What is it? What do you see/smell/hear?' he thought/sent him.

An image of equine Strider beauty swam before his eyes and blurred away. Nightwind responded as any stallion would at the scent of a mare....

"Oi! Dude, put that thing away before she sees you!" Bolden laughed loudly at the animal's 'exuberance.'

His laugh broke off as the sudden image rushed into his mind of two slim female hands clinging to the neck of the mare!

An injured woman! 'Good lad Nightwind! Good eye! Let's do something about it.' He thought/sent the handsome Strider.

In a swift motion, Bolden gathered and wrapped their possessions on the Yvas and jumped to Nightwind's broad back. There was no need to urge the stallion to haste--he was a Strider who was doing what they were born to.

The Denusk's eyes blurred at the amazing speed and thanked the gods for the Yvas hold at times like this. Striders never ceased to amaze him!

Bold turned sober and hoped the woman wasn't hurt too badly.

'She can't be dead or the Strider mare wouldn't keep walking--she' d be grieving. I hope we can catch her in time.'

The pair raced over the plains almost too fast for the human eye to follow, moving in rapidly on the mare and her ailing rider.

Nightwind slid to an abrupt halt, raising a cloud of dust. The young man's brow furrowed and his stallion nickered an echo of his concern. Bolden jumped down nimbly, walking toward the Strider mare and her rider. He slowed down, knowing not to approach an unknown Strider when protecting its rider. Bolden stopped a few paces away before he spoke urgently.

"Hello there! Are you hurt?" He called out, noting the woman's limp position and her face buried in the mare's mane. Concern shot through him and his eyes turned dark as wild honey while he waited anxiously for her to answer.

The sound of hooves beating down on the ground drew closer. Lily's pace began to slow the sound came to a halt. A voice, at last! The sound of the man's raised voice made Jalen cringe. Her body tensed as she squeezed the mare's neck again, crying out. The sound was bloodcurdling, and full of despair. With a weak attempt, she shifted her head to lay on the opposite flank of her Strider so that she may see the pair.

Lily sidestepped the great stallion, moving Jalen closer to the approaching man. Her head bobbed up and down gently, so as not to entirely disturb her companion. She beat the ground with a hoof as Jalen opened her red eyes and surveyed the man. Her face curled into an expression of sorrow.

"They're gone!" She screamed, followed by a string of murmured Pavi swears against the Zith race. The young woman groaned and collapsed against Lily's neck once more. She pointed back behind her with a dirtied hand, signaling the direction from which she came. More thick, mocha hair fell to frame her face. The black ribbon wound through one of her few braids became visible.

Lily released a soft, comforting nicker, bobbing her head once more, urging Jalen to communicate with the man. Finally, the young woman shifted her weight and leaned back, reaching down to him for assistance off her steed.

Her body was exhausted and weak from burying the dead and igniting their home. Although she knew there was nothing this man and his stallion could do to bring them back, she knew she was guarded now. This man was Drykas, and she welcomed his comfort. It had been far too many moons since she had felt the warmth of another Drykas. Lily had taken her and fled towards help, searching for someone to shelter her companion. Jalen only hoped she would be accepted.

Bolden took a long moment for his eyes to take in the scene. As always, Striders and horses before humans. The mare was anxious with her wrenching tail and anxious whinny, but very intelligent in getting her meaning across.

"There, there pretty mare, good Strider, clever girl."

The young Drykas soothed the mare as his amber gaze swept over the prone woman's form, checking for injury. He sent a thought to Nightwind to get the mare's impression of what happened, and their names.

A black braid! She's in mourning! No wonder the woman is incoherent and screaming. The sooty smudges and swollen eyes of the woman's face gave clear testament to her grief and the recent funeral pyre.

Her delicate trembling hand reached down and he grasped it strongly in his, assisting her to lay on the soft grass beneath them.

'Lily the Strider and Jalen the rider. Zith! blood, fire, death, screaming, panic, aching loneliness.'

Bolden's stallion flooded him with the information and emotions all in one hit and he reeled for a moment at the sensations. A shudder ripped through him at the mention of Zith.

He had to calm himself for the sake of both Striders and the woman. He sent a soothing thought to Nightwind and asked him to relay the same to poor distraught Lily and that he'd tend her rider.

"It's alright now Jalen, I'll keep you safe. You and Lily must be thirsty; I'll get you both some water."

The young Denusk grasped both water skins and untied them. They'd recently drank their fill, so they could safely afford to share the rest with the females.
He opened the largest skin and set it on the ground for Lily. He gently patted her neck for a brief chime.

"Noble and kind Strider to take care of her rider so well. Drink you fill lovely mare. Nightwind, keep an eye on her while I see to her woman."

Gently, he half lifted the woman to a sitting position within his arms and brought the water skin to her mouth.

'Gods she's feather light!'

"Drink noble rider. You're safe now. Be calm Jalen."

Graciously, Jalen accepted the kind gesture and drank deep from the skin. Her sobs died down within minutes as Lily relayed the stallion's assurance. A cool wave of calm settled over her aching body and heart. She looked to Lily as she swallowed hard, mustering the strength to speak.

"I thank you kindly," She said as she took his hand. "Petching monsters.... They took everyone from Lily and I. I was out scouting for a hunt, and she came to me, flooding my mind with visions of the blood of my people. We did not-" Her voice choked. "We did not back it back in time."

Lily, too, drank from the water skin, pausing only to nicker in agreement with Jalen.

She wiped the tears from her face, grateful for the hospitality of the two. It was a silent moment before she spoke again.

"Yes, I am Jalen Cleardawn, and my Strider mare is Lily. To whom do I owe my plentiful thanks?"

Bold took a blue cleaning rag out of his pocket and gently handed it to her. As she told him what happened his eyes became lighter and amber colored, showing his concern.

The young man couldn't help but admire the remarkably deep bond of rider and Strider--it reminded him of the stallion and himself. He was touched by her story, the loyalty of her mare and her soft spoken strength.

"I am Bolden Denusk of the Sapphire Clan and this is my Strider Nightwind." he smiled at her and rummaged in the bag for a moment.

"Are you hungry Jalen? Nightwind is showing Lily a patch of fresher grass, but he informs me she frets to leave you the four paces away for grazing."

Never before had Bolden met a woman with a stronger Strider bonding than Jalen and Lily.....

This was an ideal that meant everything to him and came second only to his love for his family.

Jalen accepted the blue rag, thanking him again. She wiped under her puffy eyes, and dabbed at the sweat on her forehead. Her head hung low, ashamed of her defeat. The constant weight of acknowledging that the extermination of her Pavillion had been her own fault sat on her shoulders. Never in her life had she felt so weak. And yet, here stood Bolden Denusk of the Sapphire Clan and his magnificent stallion Nightwind, giving her and Lily their undivided support and attention. They had not once uttered thoughts of blame or reproach.

She handed the cloth back to Bolden and replied, "I'm afraid I'm still rather anxious," The thought of eating made her feel as though she may heave.

As she chanced a look up at Bolden, she felt the slightest smudge of a smile turn the corners of her mouth up. From Bolden, she looked to Lily, standing between her and Nightwind. Her tail flicked back and forth as she surveyed Jalen intently.

"Silly girl," She said. "Silly, kind girl. I think we're safe now. Go with Nightwind to graze. I'm sure he will show you the same kindness his rider is to me."

Jalen sent assuring thoughts to Lily as she spoke, encouraging her to allow the stallion to escort her.

"What a dear Strider you have. He shares your compassion." She admired man and rider for their generosity. Lily crossed past Jalen, nuzzling her gently as she passed. She paused to shake her mane out, and followed after Nightwind.

"Such curious, captivating creatures, aren't they?" Jalen spoke the question more so to the wind than directing it to Bolden, though she was sure he was in agreement.

"You're most welcome." he assured her as he took back the cloth and put it away.

'Perfect manners on her.' the thought slipped in and out again.

Not since his older sister Kavala had he seen a female with so much composure.

"Off your feed? Yea I understand." Bold responded, keeping to himself his own continuing grief for the loss of his mother and Tamar. He couldn't imagine an entire clan wiped out of existence. He put the food back in the bag and brightened like a child when she brought up the animals.

Like a completely different man, the young Denusk beamed with pride when she complimented his stallion. Nightwind meant more to him than his own life. She'd touched on the topic nearest and dearest to him. Her compliment of Bold personally went unheard above the preferred high praise of his beloved Strider.

"Absolutely! Some people have only the barest of attachment with their Strider and it gets under my skin. To keep that bond growing, you have to be selfless and open your heart and mind; let the animal's needs come before your own. When you give your all, you get it back a thousand times over."

Bolden's voice and gaze seemed far on the horizon as he got caught up in the subject.

"It's touching to see how charmingly devoted Lily is to you."

His eyes warmed with flecks of pure gold as he looked from Strider to rider. Subconsciously, he rubbed a hand over the back of his neck to lift off the clinging chestnut curls.

Bolden began to feel something alien; a startling kinship with a woman he barely knew. Bold's gaze lingered over the glossy length of her beautiful hair and impossibly vivid blue eyes. Even in grief, Jalen sat with quiet dignity and serene poise. And yet he somehow wanted to protect her from her own loss.

Something stirred within him and he wasn't quite sure what it was.

Feeling the need to do something useful, he took out a well made sapphire blue length of fabric. Bolden stretched it out and draped it from one branch right near the woman, a few inches over her head, to a tall brush on the left a few feet over. Feeling better about making a cooling shady shelter in the blazing sun, he sat down under it, very close to Jalen.

"It's a little snug, but it does give some relief--and at least there's a good breeze right?" Bolden smelled strongly of horse, dust and an honest morning's sweat; natural scents that were most common to the Drykas with a genuine perfume of its own.

He smiled down at her and asked gently,

"Are you able to speak of what happened or do you need more time? We could always talk about horses and Striders for moons if you prefer."

Training on the plains (Jalen, Open)

Postby Jalen Cleardawn on July 21st, 2011, 7:30 pm

Jalen felt Bolden's sense of pride in his Strider swell over her. His joy beamed over her, giving her a feeling of ease. This man, he cared deeply for his companion. She decided to voice her admiration.

"You are absolutely right, dear Bolden. It brings me great dismay to witness the failing connection between rider and Strider. Lily is indeed my best friend, and I would put her before many others in my life-" She paused, tears welling in her eyes. "Now it seems to be my only choice, I suppose. My connection with Lily did not cost me those I held dear. They were stolen from me..."

Jalen swallowed the lump in her throat, choking back a surfacing sob. As Bolden draped the sapphire blue cloth over the brush and sat next to her, she felt herself breaking in two again. She knew there was no room in her heart for forgiveness. This had not been an accident, but a cold-blooded slaughter.

"Indeed," She choked out. "Yes, the breeze is nice. We used to..." She shook her head, suffocating in her sorrow. She drew her knees to her chest and broke into sobs once more.

Lily looked up abruptly from grazing with Nightwind and whinnied, but Jalen raised a hand to signal her to settle. She held her breath, drowning the ascending cries. As she did, she squeezed her knees tighter.

"Foolish, foolish," She finally said. "Ugh, I'm not sure what's left for me to take pride in besides Lily. I'm lost without my Pavillion, without the guidance of my fellows. It was just like any other day, Bolden. There was no scent on the wind that Lily detected. I left her to graze amongst the other Striders, and went out to see if I could find any sign of game. I searched far from our home, and when Lily sprinted to my side, I felt her thoughts flood me like a torrential rain of terror. Blood, Bolden. So much blood. The beating of leathery wings on the wind. The scattering of Striders and men alike. They fell upon my home like a plague. My father, my mother, my friends, all dead. Slaughtered without care nor mercy. We simply did not make it back in time... The attack was sudden, and ended swiftly, though I'm sure they suffered. And that's what pains me most. Awful creatures, Zith. Heartless wretches."

Jalen punched the ground next to her with her fist, tears wetting her cheeks once more.

"I'm not sure what I'm to do now. I am lost...." She closed her eyes, allowing the breeze to wash over her hot face. The sweat beading on her forehead refused to budge, as did the rock in the pit of her stomach.

"I'm beginning to ramble, to wallow in self-pity. Tell me about your beloved Strider and your Windmark, Bolden. He's a handsome stallion."
