Physical Description

Image Dazen’s skin has lost the warm glow from days spent at sea and in the sunshine; now his flesh resembles that of a human that has spent the majority of his time indoors, hidden away from the warmth of the sun. The healthy glow from his cheeks no longer exists with his separation from the sea that he had called his home for his entire life. While his frame still stands at a tall six foot four, his weight has decreased considerably in his new “life” as a slave in the desert. Since his enslavement he has had his hair shaved down to the scalp and all pieces that could be removed from his body forcibly taken that reflected his history and who he was. The only “signs” that Dazen is a Svefra are his blue eyes (though they are common among non-Svefra, too) and the tattoo that spirals around his left bicep. The tattoo denotes his Tavan with a manta ray – an odd pairing for such a young Tavan – that spirals in a simplistic black pattern from the tip of his shoulder down to his elbow.

Character Concept

Dazen is like any Svefra in that he enjoyed life out on the sea and found those that lived permanently on land to be odd; creatures that preferred to be permanently landlocked versus being out and free on the water. There was nothing like it, in Dazen’s mind, than being on a ship with his family and enjoying the fresh air and the movement of the water beneath his feet. Before his enslavement, Dazen could count on one hand how many times his feet had touched solid ground and he preferred to keep it that way. The only reason he would ever go to land was to go with his pod to barter with coastal cities or investigate the source of a Nal'lyeo.

His youthfulness proved to be a hindrance, as like most youth, he didn’t listen to the stories and warnings of his parents and elders about a Svefra’s behaviour on land and how their customs differ greatly from those of the Svefra. His pod was in closer proximity to a coastal human city than regular pods and from this exposure to humans, both on land and those that brave to visit the Svefra on the water, meant that his comprehension and exposure to Common made him far more fluent than some of his older family members. This also helped in Dazen’s bartering with the humans, who he found pretty easy to manipulate into lowering prices for their goods while convincing them of the higher cost and better value of the wares that the Svefra had acquired.

Character History

Dazen grew up as the son of a man from another pod and The Lia’s daughter. His pod was named for the ocean gyres generated by wind and other planetary means beyond the Svefra’s comprehension that helped stir the water around the seas, though legend has it that Laviku’s hand is the “gyre” that moves them. Somewhere in their history, before even the current Lia’s memory, they had once been called Oceangyre as a pod name but the former part of their name was lost to history. His brothers and sisters were all the children in the pod and the tracing of bloodlines of who exactly was his “actual” brother or sister didn’t matter. As a child the other children of the Gyre pod were his friends and playmates, as were the animals in the pods that were Tavans with the other Svefra aboard the ships. While most children bonded with animals that were more their “size,” Dazen bonded with a creature that was normally eaten by the majority of his pod’s Tavans – a manta ray. The beast was gigantic and not much of a help in regards to helping his pod hunt, though the unique Tavan made up for it by being a source of entertainment for the children who enjoyed swimming with and on top of Dazen’s Tavan.

Education among the Svefra isn’t the usual method of being in a school with desks and exams, but a passing on of knowledge and experience from the older members of the pod to the younger generation. Dazen’s strengths were, unfortunately, not with hunting or catching fish with his brothers and sisters but with bartering and persuading weaker-minded members of other pods and humans on the coast when they traded with them. The humans came to the Svefra and Dazen was thankful for their visits because he was not so keen to remain on land; he would get and self-diagnose himself with the made up illness of “land sickness,” an equivalent to what most non-seafaring races would compare to sea sickness.

ImageIt was on one of his rare trips to a coastal city that Dazen would find himself separated from his pod and imprisoned with the humans on land. The notion of ownership differed between humans and Svefra and when Dazen found a small collection of cooks knives out on a counter of a chef’s house and he deemed them, laying out in the open, perfectly acceptable to take. As the owner did not care for his belongings if he was going to leave them out in the open for anyone to take as their own, Dazen thought, so he pocketed them and thought nothing more of it. But the chef, having had experienced the quick hands of Svefra in the past, wasn’t going to be “bullied” by them again and managed to catch Dazen before he made it back to sea and called the guards to deal with him. The chef wasn’t merely just a cook at a tavern, but the son of the head of the guard and wanted the Svefra punished for what he had done, as an example to his people. Death would be too easy, in the chef’s mind, so he wanted Dazen to suffer a fate worse than death – so he paid a slaver to ship the poor thief inland, to the desert, where he would suffer being away from his pod, his sea, and his Tavan.
