[Avain Manor] Elemental Knowledge

It was a day like any other, only with one difference. The ache, it was back. The burn in his heart, the desire to learn more. The elements, three in base, limitless in potential. In combination, the three bases could prove to create dozens of new elements. Techniques that others had yet to even dream of. Water, alone, left in its natural state, it stood little chance of doing much harm. There was always drowning, slipping in the rain. It was nothing too threatening, if left alone. Once wind had been mastered a whole new chapter of spells unraveled. He could make ice. Ice, lovely frozen water. It takes the water, nearly useless in combat, could be so much more. And now, his new talent, the fire. How would it combine? What happens when water meets fire? Ice melts, turning back into water, but what beyond that? And what of air and fire? Was there even a way to combine the trio? To take and press them together in the right way. To find that delicate balance and make something greater than any of them individually. Wind by itself was able to push things, lift them, even fill your lungs. Useful, in conjunction with other things. Fire, the alluring greedy flames that threatened to consume all who may take the temptation. It threatened to grow, to take its own shape consume what it wished. It was a risky choice, and one Miro was still unsure of. Employing flames, letting them free, it was risky. No, it was risky when he was in a calm state of mind. In a controlled environment he could use them with minimal chances of a mishap occurring. Miro loved to be as reckless as possible, to see what he could get away with. Agh, it was all too much to come up with at once. He knew enough of wind and water. Wind can cool, and water made a great base, his first element. But fire? What was so special about fire? It was hot, that was for sure. Too hot to even feel its substance. Miro's mother had said something about it, but it was fuzzy. Some of her lessons weren't fully absorbed. Fire ate things, but why was it again? Fire eats thing to...agh, damn, he couldn't remember what it was. What did fire do after it ate them? It spread wildly, and all that it left behind were ashes.

Miro let out a laugh, sitting up in his bed. His hair was an unsettled mess that stood up on one side of his head. He let out a deep sigh followed by a small drawn out sigh. He took his hand and ran it back through his hair. He smirked, but not out of happiness. He was awaiting the headache that would follow the finish of this lesson. He took his trousers and dressed himself. He needed something to burn now. Out in the courtyard was the fire pit. It hadn't much use since its purchase, but it did have a small stock of wood ready to burn. But was it time for that yet? Miro thought not. Observing would teach you plenty, but if one were to have an idea first, he could test a desire. What did Miro aim to prove? How did he want to use fire? A large grin came rest on his lips, as the idea fluttered into his mind. "I want to burn water." Miro knew that water was used to put out fire. Did that simply mean it was stronger than it? That was doubtful to say the least. There were things about fire and about water Miro didn't understand. Eventually fire would go out without something to burn, but why would it have so much trouble burning water? And what about wind? Could it burn wind as well? Now he had two directions to go with his ideas, he would make a game of it all. The game would revolve around him coming up with an end result. A prediction of what were to come. The first would be the results of adding fire and wind. What would happen? "Wind added to fire will create an explosion. And water added to fire will put out the fire." It was simple enough, and he would find out these things and possibly more.

Miro walked out to the courtyard and loaded up the fire pit with a large amount of wood. It was slightly moist, still wet from the night before. He took his hand and moved it across the top of a piece of wood, spreading his res. A quick transmutation to fire and the fire would start. The res burned for a moment before teetering out. Miro stared down at it with a frown, slightly discouraged. His fire was hot, he felt the heat coming from it. Yes, the wood was moist, but the amount of res should have been enough. Miro took the piece of wood off the top of the pile and coated it in a layer of res. The production hurt, causing him to loose focus. As Miro moved to set the log down, his res transmuted in his hands. It burned him slightly as he dropped it, having it land near the bottom of the pile of wood. It seemed to be away from the concentration of wood. If it wouldn't burn at the top, there was no way it would down near the bottom. Miro's hand hurt a lot. It wasn't a serious burn but the heat always drove him crazy. He looked at his hand, it was fine, as he thought. However, one thing did surprise him. When his eyes returned to the pit, the logs were beginning to burn. The next one up from the first had caught fire and the ones touching it now too were on fire. Slowly it spread upwards from the bottom outwards. Miro watched the blazing fire take hold of each piece of wood.

It was time to set his first test in motion. If it were to explode, Kinneas would be mad. Oh well, Miro knew he needed to find out. He centered his mind and slowly crafted an amount of res. Slowly, over the course of a couple chimes he formed a small ball of res that fit his palm. Miro let it float away from his hand as be backed away. Miro made sure to stay withing the area of control of his res and more importantly keeping sight on the fire. If it would explode, he would be sure to see it. But chances were good that he was wrong. His res sat above the flame as Miro focused his mind. His mind wrapped around the change to wind, he readied to transmute. His eyes were fixed on the fire that danced and crackled. Carefully he moved his res into the fire, making sure not to attract the flames. He made the transmutation, mind poised, ready for anything. As it changed the flames danced upwards, gaining size for a moment and making a snapping noise, yet only for a moment. Miro smiled, he was wrong, but only slightly. Wind added to fire makes it bigger. He wasn't done with adding wind to fire however. There was so much more he could do. Again, he began to build res in his hand, forming another ball. He moved it to the pit and attracted an amount of the fire to the orb and brought it upwards to the sky. As it sat in the sky, Miro transmuted the res into a strong gust of wind that moved outwards from the center, mixing with the wild flames. He had to turn away. The flames engulfed the wind in a large flashy shock wave of light. Once again Miro smiled. This was starting to get fun.

There was always more that could be done, but for now he move on. Fire and water combined. It was an exciting thought. Miro knew that too much water would put the fire out. But the right balance could have a much different result. Again he made a small mass of res in a ball. He moved it to flames and stole as much of the flames away as he could. They swirled around wildly, taking much of the pits flames. He let the ball sit above the blazing pit. Slowly the flames returned in size and Miro made the transmutation. The flames melded together moved up for a moment before dying down in size. A loud hissing noise. The air above the fire looked slightly distorted and looked strange. Fire and water makes weird air? Was it hot? Did it wet your hand? Miro's guess to both of these questions would be yes. Without even realizing he began to make more res as he walked towards the inferno. It was going to be very hot, so he would quickly create the product. His res wold keep the flames concentrated low, keeping the fire contained. Once transmuted the water would further lower the size of the flames leaving only the fire-water behind. Miro started the procedure as planned. The fires absorbed and the res transmuted letting forth the familiar hissing. As it rose up to greet Miro's hand he readied his mind. If it was hot, he would know. Severe heat was always unpleasant. The moment it touched his hand his eyes opened wide. It was extremely hot! Miro pulled his hand back and felt it with his other hand, trying to rub away the pain. It was slightly wet.

Miro smiled at the realization that fire produced something other than ashes. He didn't know much beyond the basics of this, but he imagined it to be quite simple from what he experienced. Water is as hot as the fire. As long as he can burn all of the water, he can spread the heat. Burning without it spreading and consuming everything. It seemed to be a perfect balance. This new element type was impressive, but he could still learn more on new things. Briefly in the past Miro had experienced a more powerful fire spell. Influencing it with wind in harmony could make a new element. Miro who now had much more control over fire decided it was time to try to learn this new element. He made another ball of res, concentrating through the discomfort. He moved the ball over the pit and readied to attack the fire with this element. He transmuted the res while striking it downwards. A flash of light shot downwards and a cracking noise resonated through the courtyard. A piece of wood shot forth. Upon inspection he found one of the edges had an intense burn on it. It seemed very powerful, and to even burn like fire. He was unsure if such a force could be trusted for use in combat. If so, it would not be without practice.

Miro left the fire to burn out on its own and returned inside. He seemed satisfied for now. He had learned a lot, but knew this was only the introduction to new power. Before long he would explore reimancy more. He seated himself on his bed. It was still early in the day. He was still a bit tired from the day and done training. Miro laid his head down and rested his eyes. He was proud of his progress and fell asleep, dreaming of the many possible magic techniques he could create.

Overall: A nice, short post about learning new things. First and foremost, I liked that you eased into learning a new element rather than just assuming instant mastery.

Second is my two cents. Your description of Reimancy feels perfunctory (except for a very nice moment where you worked to insinuate your Res into the fire without accidentally attracting it); make Res, then make element. I only bring it up here because this thread is about learning new facets of your magic, rather than interaction between characters or events where more abbreviation would allow you to get to the thrust of the scene. You did well with observing the physical effects of the Reimancy, but for a thread like this I would really have liked to see the same depth of observation applied to the magical side of things. How does it feel to transmute Res to fire? Does the Res itself feel different?

[/two cents] :)

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the XP or Lore awarded.
