Physical Description
Long, dark hair in the style of the Drykas, inheriting the red-brown skin and crystalline grass-green eyes of this Benshira mother,Yaheba stands at 5'5" and is of a wiry build. His face is narrow, his jaw firm, his eyes almond-shaped and divided by a blade-thin nose. He is somewhat barrel-chested, with long bandy legs a little bowed from riding.

Character Concept

Ya-ya is something of a dreamer, but hardened by the culture of the Drykas so that he does not hesitate to follow his ephemeral ambitions to the bitter end. Many who know him consider Ya-ya foolish, flighty and irresponsible--and thus dangerous. It is true that the stupid of the Drykas die young, and Ya-ya is not stupid. While he may not think everything through to its logical conclusion, he has long been capable of dealing with the consequences. At the moment, Ya-ya has rejected the Drykas and gone in search of his mother's people, the Benshira of far-away Yaheba.

Character History

Yaheba is the son of an Amethyst Drykas clansman and his (second) wife, a Benshira woman who traded the cheerful company of her desert people for her romanticized vision of the grasslands. Ya-ya's mother realized her mistake, but with characteristic stubbornness and good cheer managed to struggle on, bearing her husband twins--Ya-ya and his sister, Mere. Mere did well in Drykas society; she made for an excellent horsewoman and a fair huntress. Ya-ya on the other hand, while decent at fighting always lost, and seemed to regard Striders with a deep suspicion inherited from the mother he clung to. The only thing he showed much promise in was Webbing, but Ya-ya didn't have much interest in such a subtle skill, continuing his studies only to help maintain his mother's social standing. Whenever he could, he much preferred to listen to her absent-minded nostalgia and chose to name himself after the much-fabled city of Yaheba.
Ya-ya grew older and still no Strider chose him, leaving him continually on the outskirts of Drykas society. This became increasingly irksome to him, and his dreamt-up escapades became increasingly disruptive. His father, realizing the impending conflict, tried to negotiate with his son but found him as stubborn as his mother. However, even Ya-ya understood that he might sooner or later have to face his grandfather (the Longshadow Ankal) and even he knew to avoid that day. Of course, Ya-ya being Ya-ya, he found the most disruptive and offensive method of avoiding conflict--he rejected the Drykas and announced he would find 'where he belonged.' The clan fell into outrage but were effectively shocked into silence when the Longshadow Ankal actually approved of this emigration. The other Ankals still demanded he not be allowed to leave the clan with anything of value, insisting that they were already losing so much in terms of the wasted energy spent on raising the youth.
In the end, Mere agreed to accompany Ya-ya to the borderlands, where she said a stoic good-bye to her twin, unexpectedly gifting him one of her rag-eared dogs. Soon after he met up with one of the Benshira caravans and made it safely to the gates of Yasheba . . .

Recently
Arriving at Yaheba mid-Fall, Ya-ya has yet to find family, employment or lodgings and has fallen to begging in the streets. He hates the city, hates the claustrophobia, the crowds and the smell. Even horses were better than this.
. . .
Late in the Fall, he met a few travelers with whom he conversed and gained some coins of. They seemed good enough sorts, and Ya-ya remembers it as a good day among bad. It should be mentioned that this impression probably had a lot to do with the four silver mizas one generous young Benshira gifted him.
