When she decides to appear human, Boris is tall, lean, and athletic. Her arms and legs are long and limber, allowing her to reach a respectable five feet and ten inches in height. Though her curves are downplayed with a modest bosom and narrow hips, she remains unmistakably feminine despite her unusual style of hair. Boris outright hates long hair, finding it bothersome as it seems to get in the way of everything, and it itches, so she has it kept extremely short to the point that she could be considered bald. This makes her large, brown eyes stand out even more, deep and curious, and always ready for something new.

Her clothing is usually simple and loose. Boris has a particular fondness for seashell jewelry, enjoying the sound it makes.

ImageIn her more natural form, Boris assumes the streamlined body of a dolphin, colored with crisscrossing gradients of gray and white, creating an hourglass shaped marking on both sides. Her height remains remarkably the same; she stands 5'10 in her human form, which is the exact length of her aquatic form. She is much heavier, however, weighing roughly two hundred pounds. A long, thin beak is filled with dozens of sharp, interlocking teeth.

In both forms, her skin is latticed with odd, thin scars. Most of them were acquired through play; her animal form is resilient, and enjoys a rough game. These are less apparent on peach skin.

Boris has always liked humans. Being able to take the shape of one only bolsters her fascination, and enables her to walk a line between two worlds: the land and the sea. Her curiosity is what drives her. While the girl is impeccably intelligent, she never thinks too deeply on anything, much more preoccupied with playing games and having fun with herself and those around her (whether they're willing or not). Like a child, she is inordinately easy to please, and yet she grows bored quickly and constantly yearns to make things interesting. Stuck behind her own world perception, she often has a difficult time understanding what other people are trying to communicate, and often it takes some effort to get a simple message through her head.

history

She never knew her father, and barely remembers her mother. Boris was born in Yahebah to a pelican kelvic, Y'landa, who often staked a perch on the docks overlooking the ocean. Y'landa was not much of a forward thinker, and to her the ocean only supplied a means of food. It bothered her that her daughter would never be able to master the air and take flight, though she was consoled by the fact that the only thing as expansive as the sky was the ocean itself—the water would be Boris' sky. This never bothered Boris in the slightest. She loved to play, creating fish-catching contests with Y'landa and sleeping warm in her mother's arms at night.

However, Y'landa felt uncomfortably rooted to the ground taking care of her daughter, and within just a few months, turned Boris out on her own. For a while, Boris lingered near the Yahebah port, greeting the boats that came and went, and playing games with the Benshira and other humans who took a dip in the ocean to cool off from the heat of Eyktol. Other times, she would assume her human form and walk among the people in the city, observing the many sights and sounds that the ocean could never offer. Few people ever associated the bald, nameless girl with the dolphin in the Yahebah harbor, and those that did never thought very much of it.

She became particularly fond of one large fishing vessel that sailed out every morning, following it out to sea as it left port and taking advantage of the fishing nets that kept her quite well fed. The fishermen on the vessel loved her at first, not aware that she was a kelvic, and named her "Boris" on the assumption that she was male (dolphins are not very sexually dimorphic). Soon enough, unfortunately, the fishermen discovered that Boris was taking much of their fish, literally eating away their profits. They began attacking her to scare her away. When that didn't work, they began trying to catch her with the intention of eating her, feeling that was a more permanent and practical solution to the problem.

Finally sensing danger, Boris swam for her life, going deeper into the ocean than she ever had before. The smell of Yahebah was completely gone, and for several weeks, she was lost. All alone, she discovered that the open ocean was a desert much like Eyktol itself. Food was scarce and hard to come by, and several creatures she came across were much larger than she was. She became skittish at every shadow, her health dwindling as time went by, until the time came when she saw an approaching shadow in the water and didn't swim away from it.

Suddenly Boris found herself surrounded by dolphins who looked very much like her. Though most dolphin pods would ignore strays and move on, a large, older female took a quick liking to the young, weakened kelvic. She imposed herself on Boris, forcing her to keep up with the rest of the pod and showing her how to hunt and eat with them. The kelvic took these lessons and learned quickly, eventually becoming an integral part of the pod and following their migratory route across the ocean. While she fell in love with her pod, she continued to carry a certain sense of emptiness, as though this wasn't where she ultimately belonged.

Boris never lost her love for humans, visiting a city port every time her pod neared the land. The other dolphins learned that she was a little different from them, special in a way they knew was beyond their understanding. She could look like a human, but smell the same, though none of the dolphins ever seemed to mind whichever form she took. They would wait for her for several days while she explored each new city. Eventually she'd always come back to them and they would move on, following the massive shoals of fish that drew them ever onward on the ocean's currents.
