Tiberius Bayle
General Information Race: Human Gender: Male Age: 37 (born Fall 82, 474 AV) |
Physical Description Tiberius is a nearly middle-age man with shoulder length black hair, and a receding hairline, as well as a well-trimmed, slightly graying beard. He has a barely hooked nose that is a little larger than average, and intelligent, piercing brown eyes. Tiberius stands about six foot tall, with the wiry muscled build of someone who does a lot of walking and hiking, but not anything that requires thick muscles.
Though usually dressed in a nondescript manner: with earthen colored colored traveler's clothes and studded leather jerkin, a quarterstaff, and a dagger, Tiberius understands that from time to time, one needs to dress up. For those few occasions he wears robes that clearly show his status as a practitioner of the arcane. It is a thick sweeping robe with a considerable amount of fancy embroidery, in the form of nonsensical runes, words in Nader-canoch, and random catchy patterns. |
Character Concept Tiberius is above all a student and a scholar. While generally a good man, he has little use for many of the trappings of polite society, such as laws and manners. He does realize the danger of breaking the law, and will usually avoid doing so if it is at all possible. He can be forthright and stern, and very condescending, due to his intelligence, education, and magical abilities.
Tiberius sees the uneducated masses as little more than rabble, though he does not think they should be punished or overly exploited. He simply sees them as inferior and primitive. For the intelligent and scholarly, especially fellow students of the arcane, he is much more open-minded, though he is quite aware of the dangers associated with consorting with other wizards.
Tiberius will often keep his magical talents a secret, until he has properly assessed the atmosphere of his location. This comes from the tragic death of his mother, killed by a mob that falsely accused her of witchcraft, when it was his father who practiced magic. One of his greatest desires is to spread the idea that magic is not the terrible thing many believe, but mankind's most precious and valuable tool. His greatest goal is to help found an Academy of Magic that will become the center of the magical community, and foster a proper mentality regarding the Arcane. |
Character History Tiberius was born in a small village a few hours journey from Zeltiva, nestled in the Zastoska Mountains. His father, Marcus Bayle, was (secretly) a wizard and a well respected sage and astronomer, and his mother, Julia Bayle, was a scholar of anatomy and botany. His family often traveled to the city, so that his parents could frequent the University. From the time he was three, his scholar parents schooled him in various topics, most especially astronomy and mathematics. He was taught to read and write in both Common and the Ancient Tongue by his father, and his mother was able to instill a little bit of Isur. As an only child of a relatively reclusive family, he did not really have friends, and was socially awkward for the entirety of his childhood and adolescence.
When Tiberius was fifteen, a large group of woodcutters from his community came to the Bayle estate and demanded that his mother be handed over, on account of witchcraft. Tiberius was unable to stop them, and they stormed the house and dragged his mother out to the front courtyard, where they prepared an area for decapitation. Tiberius' father arrived before they could do so, and he begged with the crowd to let his wife go; he said that they were making a mistake, and that his family would pack up and leave if only they would let his wife go. The leader of the mob refused, and took up the headsman's axe, removing Julia Bayle's head with a single stroke.
Marcus Bayle screamed furiously, reminding them that he said they were making a mistake. The skilled wizard let loose with his magic, killing a large portion of the mob and scattering the rest. Then he and Tiberius packed up some of their things and fled.
It took Tiberius some time to finish grieving for his mother, and the duo was hundreds of miles away from Zeltiva by the time he was done mourning. It was then that he asked his father to teach him the arcane arts. His father was hesitant at first, thinking the boy would seek further revenge, but eventually saw something else: the spark of earnest interest. It had long been a family tradition, so he acquiesced, and began to teach Tiberius.
For fourteen years Marcus taught his son the nuances of Summoning, in conjunction with astronomy and mathematics. He deepened his son's curriculum with shielding and glyphing, and performed the induction into reimancy. But for fourteen years his wife's death had eaten away at him and his desire to continue on. In the Winter of 502 AV, Marcus passed away. Having seen it coming, Tiberius' period of mourning was much shorter. He resolved to continue the study of the arcane, and to help the world see that magic was a good thing. His mother's death would be a lesson, and his father's life an example.
Tiberius has spent the last eight years continuing his travels and studies, pursuing the art of the arcane. Finally he embarked on a trek to the city of Lhavit, having heard of its open mindedness towards wizards, and its friendly environment towards the study of magic.
