character concept
Personality
Caiden is mostly carefree and excitable. As long as he’s around other people, he shifts the focus to them, rarely talking about himself. When he is alone for too long, he becomes depressed and lingers on his own flaws. He delves into self-hatred and becomes lethargic. People give him purpose, and without them, he is at a great loss of identity. Although he loves being around others, he rarely makes deep connections for fear that he’ll get them hurt somehow. He only wants to best for all those around him, and in his mind, he is not that. He wants to bring others happiness and hope, then depart from their lives.

Ethics
Life is tough, and some people deserve justice. Petty crime needs to be taken lightly, as usually people have a good reason for it. Actions should not be judged in and of themselves, but by the motivations behind them. Nobody has the right to take someone else’s life. The poor and needy and those that can’t care for themselves ought to be looked after, and if someone needs something, it is your job to help them get it. You can’t be happy unless you’re helping make others happy. If you do good for other people, then perhaps people will be good to you. That’s not always the case, though.
character history
Caiden's parents are unknown to him. They died in a freak fire accident when he was just an infant. He miraculously survived and was taken to an orphanage in Syliras.
Since Caiden can remember, he's been building things. As a young child, he would steal bits and pieces of things- sticks, blocks of wood, flint, bits of steel, broken glass, anything he could find- and fit them together to create imaginative designs. Most of the time, they were just sculptures; gnarled creatures and twisted limbs and distorted features, or unstable buildings, or mysteries only a child could dream up. However, as he aged, he became more and more sophisticated in the things he built. He started to create imaginary weapons for himself and the other orphans with which he lived. Some might call his creativity average for a child, but Caiden could always flawlessly envision things that others could not yet see. He would not read or work like the other children who so longed to be adopted. He only created.
While most adults saw this boy as worthless, the other children were enchanted by him. He could transform what others viewed as garbage into treasures, and would do so simply for the joy of creating. He soon found that, as more and more children employed him to create things for them, the joy in giving someone just a shred of happiness was even greater. Caiden became very sociable in his late childhood years, attaching himself to the most destitute children in order to give them hope and help them see themselves in a new light. He befriended a young boy named Tirus, a dark-haired, quite Kelvic child. They became like brothers, though Caiden had to help keep his friend's race a secret for fear of him being hated. The two made a pact, promising to always look after each other, as they had no one else to do so.
At the age of 14, Caiden was discovered by an inventor named Theodorus. Seeing the boy's potential, he offered him an apprenticeship. Though it would be difficult work, he promised to give Caiden food, clothing, and a home in return. Caiden immediately accepted, only realizing at the last moment that this would mean leaving his friend in the orphanage. Caiden spoke to Tirus and asked what this would mean. The Kelvic stated that without his only friend and brother, there was nothing holding him there. He decided to live on the streets instead, visiting Caiden when he had the time.
The first two years of study under Theodorus were rigorous. Though he did have natural talent, Caiden had to learn mathematics, study complex mechanisms, build extravagant structures with the help of his master, and had very little time to do anything. In whatever time he could find, Caiden would hit the town with Tirus, loving the sights of the city and always trying to get his timid companion to try new things.
One cold night during his third year of study, Tirus showed up at Caiden's door, mangled and badly wounded in animal form. He told Caiden that his past had caught up with him and died the following morning. Caiden feared that he was cursed, going into a state of denial for weeks that his friend had passed. Only months later, he came into Theodorus's study to find he, too, had passed away in his sleep (he was an elderly man when he adopted Caiden).
For the next few months, Caiden locked himself away in Theodorus's home, abandoning his inventions and drifting into depression, denial, and self-hatred. Eventually he was evicted when the local authorities found that Theodorus was dead, and he was able to buy a small apartment with the money he had found in his master's home.
Now, Caiden masks his sadness with a dazzling smile. Though he tries to stay emotionally distant from others for fear that they might also befall the fate of his past loved ones, he does observe and act to bring joy into their lives, as he did as a child. He invents some things, and is trying to investigate his "brother"s killer. His closest companion is Theodorus's faithful dog, Sargent, who is always at the boy's side. Though he is still a child of sorts, Caiden has a quick wit and a genius mind, though he does make stupid decisions. He enjoys time in taverns, drinking, and engaging in conversation. He likes to analyze people, to try to delve into their problems and fix them as if they were broken mechanisms.
