1st of Winter AV 511 SURVIVING THE BLIZZARD ![]() Daeth was freezing and freezing quickly, he had to get cover. It'd been almost half an hour since the blizzard suddenly started, blowing away everything in its path. The dirt path to Avanthal had disappeared and had been replaced by white, soft snow, unfortunately the winds that were raging around him were far from soft. They flew by him, silently freezing him from head to toe. It's very rare a day that you get to see a Jamoura run so quickly but when Daeth saw that small depression in the mountain he almost flew in there. The cold was just so.. cold, never had he felt so frigid. He knew that even in the relative comfort of the cave he'd need a fire as the temperature in the cave was also, far from warm. He peered outside the small cave and noticed a small shadow that stood out from the rushing white wind. A bit of snow got in his eye, it stung and he swore as another pellet of snow smashed into his eye. He re-focused on the small black shape. Pressed against all the snow on the ground and the snow in the air. "It must be a tree!" He whispered to himself, he'd have to leave the shelter of the cave to get to the small tree. It was about 50 meters away? It wasn't much, but he was quite afraid that he'd get lost. The wind and snow made things disappear rapidly and getting lost at this time might lead to a grisly death. It was good sheer luck that brought him to this cave, and fortune might only smile on him this once. He had to act quick. He felt a chill in his fingers, he gave himself 20 minutes before frost bite would start settling on his fingers. Jamoura had thick coats but he hadn't eaten and he'd been out in this crazy ice storm for more than an hour. He went for it. He walked into the snow and instantly sunk knee deep into it. He took a few steps. He'd walk until he couldn't see the cave opening anymore he told himself silently. He took a few steps forward and felt his toes slowly losing feeling as the ice sapped the energy from his rigid limbs. He kept going, the cave disappeared behind him, he didn't notice. A sense of realization crept over him, he'd just use the trail he'd walked through to get back, as long as he worked quickly he'd be back with wood and his flint would be waiting for him in his bag in the cave. The thought motivated him and with another burst of energy propelled him forward. It was a small tree alright, but it was dead, and because of that its bark was crisp and easy to break. With the strength of 10 men he broke it off at its thin base and sped off, following his tracks back to the cave. He didn't stop until he fell into the cave opening and landed with a crunch. Wincing in pain he worked quickly, using his hammer to smash the small tree into wood chippings. He then took his flint and smashed it against the rock of the cave, sparks splashed onto the dry, cold wood. He smashed it a few more times and the sparks finally caught onto a thin piece of bark. He cultivated the flame and before he knew it a roiling fire was burning at his feet. The fire burned, and he'd warmed himself quickly. The cave was full of insects that he roasted in the fire before feeding on. They were delicious. He took out some herbs that he used to aid digestion of meat and chewed on them. They tasted bad. He spat them out. The large wet clump of grass landed right on the fire and it went out with a hiss. Daeth stared at it in disbelief and sighed. He stood up not believing his ill fortune and looked out of the cave opening. It was beautiful. The blizzard had died down to a small cold zephyr and snow flakes were gently falling from the sky. Maybe him spitting on the fire wasn't really fate spiting him but fate telling him that the world was ready for him to explore. He praised Caiyha and walked back into the cave, returned to the entrance and sauntered out. "Avanthal better be worth the wait" he thought optimistically. The snow sparkled as if knew and he smiled knowing that Avanthal would DEFINITELY be worth it. NoteFirst story! It was kind of dull but I felt that it was necessary to expand on Daeth's skill in surviving the wild and feeling at home near Avanthal. |
