Avari's Cottage

Image

Purchased from a Zeltivan fisherman when she first arrived in the city for the price of her grandmother's mizas and a reading of the fisherman's heart's desire, Avari's cottage is located within walking distance from the harbor. The sturdy one-room cottage is built with stout walls of grey granite and a shingled roof. Squat and sturdy, the cottage boasts a solid pine door with an old, rusty lock and a single window with thick, translucent glass panes that looks out toward the harbor. A chimney protrudes from one side of the cottage, as plain and blocky-looking as the rest of the building.

Inside the cottage, a small hearth constructed from ramshackle bricks and stones is set on one side, with a heavy iron cooking pot beside it. The floor is covered with wooden boards, usually swept clean but with dust and cobwebs accumulating in the corners. The scant furnishings consist of a low bed with a pillow and blankets, a musty chest inherited from the fisherman, and a rickety, scarred wooden table and chair placed in the center. Pushed into a corner, a jug and washbasin further indicate the cottage owner's preoccupation with personal cleanliness. Soot-blackened rafters extend above one's head, so grimy that they appear all but invisible in the shadow of the vaulted roof.
