Because the flowers look like gems scattered across the grounds of this garden it was given the name of Semele Park. Founded in 310 AV, Semele Park was what resulted in an abandoned quarry that was deemed too close to the growing city. The abandoned quarry, at its deepest, forms a small freshwater lake that has been turned into a gazing pond. That lake, called Semele's Looking Glass, forms the center of the park. The sunken surroundings around the lake have had dirt brought in, landscaped, and then planted into a garden resulting in a very posh sunken walk that weaves in and out of colorful flowers and trees. Unlike the Cliffside Grotto, which is a newer park, the Semele Park is filled with native plants, though some have been cultivated for a more outrageous variety. Pathways, some gently roped off so that strollers can't wander into precious vegetation, weave in and out of the garden providing exactly three miles of walking trails and resting spots as they weave in and out of the garden. Sculptures are tucked here and there, more formal and often depicting the Gods, adding focal points and interest to the endless flower beds alight with color. Benches for resting and contemplating are scattered throughout the park as well providing those who are older or frail a place to rest in their wanderings. Semele Park, as well as being a popular relaxation spot, is a favorite place for artists to hang out and practice sketching, drawing and painting. There are no visiting hours in Semele Park.
