Introductions Are In Order Name: Oksana Curari Race: Symenestra Age: 21 Birthday: 12 Spring 491 AV ![]() Physical Description
Of the not abnormal height of 5'3", Oksana blends in nicely with the crowds of Kalinor. Her steel gray hair is shoulder length, but generally bound tightly into a bun, out of sight and out of the way, giving a stern cast to her heart-shaped face, large yellow eyes and expressive mouth. Like all of her folk, she is slender and deathly pale, with disproportionately long arms ending in an array of long delicate fingers that serve well in her line of work. Despite the Symenestra tendency towards frailty, Oksana possesses an air of strength and stolidity that sets her apart from her species, probably a semblance mostly drawn from her personality, though a certain improved stockiness may have been inherited from her surrogate mother as well. Character Concept
Oksana is the white sheep of a family of black ones--at least by Symenestra standards. She follows the dogma of her race more or less without question, approves of the surrogate system as a 'necessary evil' and believes most other sentient races 'don't deserve the adjective.' Aside from her abject racism, Oksana is intelligent, dedicated, loyal, affectionate and self-confident edging on haughty. She tends to be very pragmatic, scorning 'sentimental solutions' (often the moral ones) as illogical or impractical. Focused on her medical studies and blossoming career as a doctor, and intent on expanding the limited medical knowledge. Oksana is also surprisingly religious, despite her scientific leanings, and takes her relations with her god, Viratas, very seriously. Character History
The Curari family are members of the Aconitum, a trader class that associates closely with non-Symenestra. As such they sympathize with the other races and have long had qualms with the Harvest system. However, fear of death convinced Oksana's parents to use surrogates twice--the first time for Oksana, and the second for her younger brother. Finally, Oksana's mother got up the courage to bear the final child herself and not surprisingly died as a result. At the time Oksana was too young to understand why her parents might choose such a risky method of birth, a sentiment complicated by the fact that she herself was born of a surrogate and exasperated by the fact that she was old enough to remember her mother later in life. It was easiest to blame the Estarians and their silly sentimentality. Her younger brother remains uncertain of his position, but the Curari's youngest is an activist for the Estarian movement. After her mother's death, her father was inconsolable and drifted wearily through life, summoning just enough energy to care for his beloved children. Only when his older brother, also newly widowed from the same cause, moved in with him did he regain some of his old vitality. Since then he has been an active part of Oksana's life and their relationship is good despite their disagreements. The Curaris held a peculiar axillary role in the Aconitum community, taking care of and catering to foreigners. Her mother had been a medicine woman of sorts with some knowledge of human anatomy and an interest in learning medical techniques from other species. Oksana has many fond memories of sitting in her mother's lap and watching her draw detailed diagrams of the digestive track. Since then, she has engaged eagerly in the study of medicine, even reluctantly treating some visitors for various ailments as part of the family business. At the moment she has an internship in the Place of Purging (Symenestra hospital) and does a lot of unofficial doctoring on the side, mostly for visitors, but also for neighbors and a few paranoid citizens and Estarians who boycott the Place.
