[Riverfall Location] The Travertine Hot Springs

Perched on the cliffs of Cyphrus just south of Riverfall, the Travertine Hotsprings erupted from the earth on the first day of Spring 512 during the enormous Djed Storm that passed through the region. The Travertine Hot springs are formed where boiling hot water gushes from a fissure in the Cliffside, rolls down hill and has deposited terraces of carbonate minerals which have hardened into travertines. Travertines are a form of limestone deposited by mineral springs, especially hot ones, which has a fibrous or concentric appearance of a white, tan or cream colored variety. The travertine pools are formed by the rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate (much in the same way as stalactites and stalagmites are formed) on the relatively flat surface of the earth which in turn creates unusual pools that flow with the contour of the landscape and are often terraced with the hottest pools being near the source of the hot spring and the coolest ones furthest away. In this region there are over a hundred various pools of travertine filled with steaming mineral water. Where the water emerges from the ground on the upper portions of the cliff, it is over two hundred degrees. Cooling as it waterfalls down the milky terraces, the lower pools are cooler ranging from eighty to one hundred and five degrees. The pools drop a couple of thousand feet from where the springs emerge and are interconnected by carved stairs and small footpaths leading between the deep pools. Visitors tot he Travertine Hot springs are welcome any time and the site itself is on the patrol list of the Cerulean and the volunteer watch of Riverfall so safety is mostly assured.
