Casa of Wind Reach

Physical Basics
Name: Casa
Race: Inarta
Age: 20
Birthday: Season of Winter, Day 6, 491 AV

Physical Description

Casa is short, even for the Inarta, and stands at only five feet tall. Not only is she short, but she is also willowy, with skinny arms and legs that make her look almost underfed. It also means she’s as curvy as a stick, and so attracts the eyes of very few men. But her shoulders are strong, her head is always held high and there is strength in her gaze that cannot be ignored. Her skin is a healthy cream color and she tans during the short summers at Wind Reach. There is a notable scar on her right arm, closer to her wrist then her elbow, though it has faded with age. It’s about an inch long and thin, like a hot metal rod had been pressed to her skin.

Casa has a heart shaped face which is slightly offset because of her too high brow and stubby chin. Her almond eyes are also slightly too large for her face, though their brilliant shade of blue often make up for that. Her nose is tiny, lost in a sea of freckles that cover it and her high cheekbones. She also has a small mouth, often pressed into a thin line of concentration.

Her hair is the traditional Inarta red; it’s a deep, burning color, like the fires she works with. Highlights of lighter red and an almost gold color in the short summer makes it look like living flame falls around her face. Casa rarely cuts it, so it falls well past her shoulders to the middle of her lower back. Most of the time she has it pulled back in a tight braid, which is coiled up into a high bun when she is working on her craft. When she is not working at the kilns she lets it fall down her back in a thick braid. Few times – such as during festivals or idle times – she lets it free, and then it is a wavy cloak that billows about her.

Personality

Like many of her people, Casa has a strong, bold personality that leads her to be very blunt with her emotions. She speaks openly about what she thinks, is not afraid to express her opinion on something and has little interest in social workings just to be ‘polite’. However, this boldness does not lead her to be reckless and hot tempered. Recklessness and becoming easily frustrated or enraged just gets glass broken and there is no place for that in the life of someone who wants to become a master in her art.

This frame of mind means her work is the center of her life. If she is not working on her latest project she is watching the master’s work, speaking with her teacher about her latest concern, or practicing on her own pieces. Since Casa finds few idle times in her day she has also found herself with few friends. It is not to the point that she feels like an outcast or socially inept, but it would be uncommon to see her running around in large groups of people.

The only thing that Casa can’t stand is daydreamers. For her, you either do what needs to be done or you move on. Any sitting around and complaining just gets on her nerves. She often finds herself snapping and daydreamers and can often come off as cold and rude to them.

Character History

Casa’s parents were both commoners. Their relationship began during drunken holiday passion and resulted in Casa. They never truly became a couple, though her father would later tell her that he fell in love with the little baby the healer placed in his arms, so he never truly disappeared. This was both good and bad for Casa. It was nice to have her father around growing up – after all, she may not have been introduced to her dream job without him- but she could tell it broke her mother’s heart to see him and know he didn’t love her. The mother and daughter never spoke of it, but Casa could easily tell her mother had a soft heart and it hurt her often from the many woes of life, though her ex lover was the worst pain.

Her mother worked in the kitchen, mostly cleaning and doing the work the true cooks of the place did not want to bother with. Her father worked with the glassblowers; he never actually touched the artistic creations but he made sure that they had all the supplies they needed and that the deks kept the place clean. While they never truly loved each other, they did love their little girl. Her mother absoultly adored her daughter and loved to dote on her. Her father was a dreamer and he would often talk about how he would one day move up in the caste system.

Casa lived her first eight years with her mother. As far as she know, her father had no other children and her mother never had a strong relationship with a man again, so she made friends with the other commoner and dek children running around. She had inherited her mother’s soft heart, but she also saw how much sadness that caused her, so she kept it well hidden with a strong expression and extremely thick skin. However, she quickly grew to hate her father’s lofty fantasies. While he would talk and talk about how much he wanted to move up in the caste system he never had the talent and the drive to do so. His fantasies of a better life made little sense in a world where the reality was as hard as the stone everything was made from and it drove Casa up a wall. She did, however, like to follow the man to work to watch the glass blowers ply their trade. The fire in the furnaces called to her, and the way the glass glittered was the one thing she felt was safe to touch her guarded heart. So when she joined the other youth in lessons it was this profession she focused on.

At first she met with little success. To work with the glass meant long days spent by the hot kilns and working with molten glass that could be dangerous. Casa was a small child, even after puberty hit and she began to grow into a adult. The glass was always heavy in her arms, the fire always left her sweating and exhausted. The pieces she created were not horrible, but they did not speak of natural talent. For a long time she did not catch the eye of any Avora.

It was a glassblower named Klaro who first introduced her to making glass beads. The pieces Casa had tried before were always large pieces but she was aware that the many beautiful beads she saw fellow citizens wearing had to come from somewhere. Klaro was one of the glassblowers that specialized in these tiny beauties, and he had come to feel that Casa would be good at it as well. He had seen her working and had noticed that her small hands were unbelievably strong and steady and her focus was incredible; all of this needed to work on pieces of art that could be as small as a fingernail with even smaller details.

His educated guess had proved correct. Casa thrived under his guidance and was his full apprentice soon after they met. While she has learned enough to now work on simple projects on her own, she is still very much under his guidance.
