Syel

Physical Description
Name: Syel
Race: Pycon
Age: 7
Birthday: 23rd of Fall, 504

Character Appearance

Syel is a typical Pycon, if such a diverse race can ever have a stereotype. His ruddy, reddish-brown body coloration is reminiscent of a desert canyon at sunset, colorful and varied, yet still containing an underlying, consistent tone. As he is a young Pycon, nearly eight years of age, his skin is smooth and unmarred by the cracks and stiffness associated with his elders.

His form is humanoid, though apparently misshapen. His arms and legs are elongated in a graceful manner, human in form, though they resemble a spider's legs in their length compared to his relatively small body. Each leg is two and a half inches long, with the arms being close to one and a half, leaving him with a total height of six inches, if the body and head are counted. He seems to wear a gentleman's suit, with a little clay bow tie and frilled lace on his chest, though neither restrict his movement. His trousers are sculpted to seem snug on his limbs and torso, reinforcing the spiderlike illusion.

Syel's features are handsome, though a bit vague, as if seen from a distance, and his hair is carved neatly against his skull, as if combed precisely by a steady hand, the hair appearing to be combed backwards and frozen in the position eternally. His neck matches his arms and legs in elongation, though it only extends a small fraction to appear longer than a human's in relation to the rest of his body.

Syel carries a small pouch with him while traveling, a light, leather thing with a thin string to bind it to his back. In it he carries his only worldly possessions, a bit of clay to sustain himself and what few Mizas he has. He finds the thing a nuisance and would gladly part with the thing, if he had a better method of transporting his valuables.

Often, he will walk with a graceful, confident air. Though not proud, he is accepting of who and what he is, and it shows. When spoken to, he will meet a man's eyes directly, not deferring to another until he has been given reason to believe the person is truly more experienced than he. Even then, he will treat them as an equal until they try to assert their authority, and only then will he bend.

Character Concept

Syel is a good-natured Pycon, generally not going out of his way to cause others harm, though he does end up causing trouble from time to time. He travels the land of Mizahar with passing traders, travelers, and other sorts, though he prefers to be with people who are clearly experienced in one art or another, so he can use the transit time to learn from them. Syel seeks knowledge and experience above all else, similarly to how all Pycons do, in an attempt to attain his true form before he leaves this world.

Once he is intrigued, there is no dissuading Syel from learning about the object of his interest. He may not choose to learn a certain trade or skill himself, but he will certainly seek to understand it as fully as he can. Syel often finds himself frustrated with books, as they rarely answer all of his questions on the subject matter, thus he will usually choose a real teacher over a book, regardless of whether the "teacher" knows he will be instructing Syel or not.

Syel considers those who teach him to be a valuable resource, akin to gold or precious gems, and will do his best to ensure that they are able to continue instructing him in whatever they know. Depending on how friendly they are, Syel may or may not consider them a friend, though friendship is a temporary thing, in Syel's mind. He often leaves those he considers friends when he has finished learning from any nearby sources of knowledge, thus he has never had a long-term friend outside of the Pyve he was born in.

The one thing Syel despises above all else is the withholding of knowledge. He firmly believes that learning and intelligence should be within the reach of even the lowliest farmhand or slave. Needless to say, many feel otherwise, and despite his facade of friendliness and warmth that he projects towards them, he will regard such with disdain.

A devout follower of Harameus, Syel considers everything in his life a learning experience, whether fortunate or not. As such, he will often appear to be optimistic about clearly terribly things, though all he is doing is expressing his acceptance of the situation and doing his best to use it to better himself in any and every way he can.

Character History

Born to a pair of relative homebodies in a Pyve near Zeltiva, Syel appeared to be quite similar to those of his heritage. For the first six years of his life, Syel never even left the walls of his Pyve. This is not to say he did not do his best to learn and grow all he was able. Truthfully, the sole reason he remained among his own kind for so long was his learning. There were a great many skilled tradesmen among the Pyve's residents, and Syel had determined to meet them all.

Throughout his self-appointed mission, he met many people whose abilities and experiences he envied, the great adventurers, traveling scholars, and warriors whose tales were told throughout all the Pyves in all the world. Every Pyve had at least a few men and women to be proud of, who could dazzle the younger, less experienced ones with their tales of daring and excitement, or enrapture curious Pycons with their sheer stores of knowledge. Head amongst these learned, adventurous souls was Pubiscles.

Pubiscles was considered the Elder of the Pyve, having explored much of the land of Mizahar and learned a great many things. He knew many languages and had great knowledge of the magical arts, though he ardently stated that he did not and could not practice it, as he feared his own mental well being too much to risk acquiring the knowledge. Despite the great stores of knowledge Pubiscles had gained abroad, Syel was drawn mostly to him because he was one of the very few practitioners of Py-ken who was skilled enough to properly teach a student. As only a Pycon can practically use Py-ken, Syel considered this a resource too rare and valuable to pass up. No one in the world outside of the Pyves could teach him this, and thus he remained in his home for time enough to convince Pubiscles to teach him--a remarkably effortless exercise, as Pubiscles was more than willing to offer insight and instruction in order to prepare Syel and any other restless Pycon for the world outside--and enough time for him to become fairly familiar with the art.

For a full six years, this was his primary study. He would train with Pubiscles for a few hours daily, and practice both alone and with his friends, many of whom had a rudimentary knowledge of Py-ken similar to his own. Eventually, he became comfortable enough with the art to hold his own against most of his fellows in spars, though he was by no means a true warrior. Soon after his sixth year had dawned, he began to grow restless. Despite all the knowledge in the Pyve, the knowledge that many individual Pycons had spent their lives gathering, he knew he had to experience it himself in order to truly understand such things. Words could not do some things--most things, even--justice. Thus, he left his home for lands unknown, deciding to make his first stop at Zeltiva, the famous port city. He'd heard many things of the place, and was curious to see which were facts and which mere rumors. He was especially curious of the place's supposed collection of knowledgeable scholars. Such a place was ideal for the beginning of his wanderings.
