Thud.

"Petch."

There was a whirring sound, steadily increasing as if an overactive mosquito was buzzing just a little bit too close. A sharp inhalation followed by a controlled grunt and the whirring stopped suddenly. Silence stretched only for a tick or two before the thud repeated itself, followed by the same, vehement curse.

Emalay stalked over to her target tree, bare feet hardly making a sound as she stepped around rocks and fallen twigs; a life in the forest taught one how to walk softly. "Noisy feet mean you don't eat" her parents had chimed together at all their children when they were younger. Each of the woman's movements were graceful and precise, expending only as much energy as was completely necessary; years of dancing and trying conditions were to thank for that.

Two dark green ribbons fluttered in the breeze about chest height from the trunk of the tree. These Emalay grasped and pulled, yanking the little daggers they were attached too from the tough bark; four more ribbons swayed with each movement of her hips, two on each. They looked like decorations, the actual dagger tucked into a similar colored sash that was slung low over her hips. Clad only in tight leather chest wrap and a similar wrap around her waist, the woman hardly looked dangerous.

Once the daggers were removed, the butterfly that had been pinned there as a target fell in a lazy spiral to the forest floor. Watching its decent for a moment or two, Emalay readjusted her ribbon daggers before stepping lightly off into the trees. It was hot for spring, and she had long since learned when enough was enough. The river wound lazily through the trees, the waters low and gurgling over the smooth, slimy stones. It was more than a creek than anything, but it would do.

Stooping by the shores, Emalay cupped her hands and brought some of the cool liquid to her lips, tiny sips taken to avoid mouthfuls of sand; the waters were gentle enough that it was clean enough to drink, but all it took was one hasty gulp to get a mouthful of dirt. Slapping her wet palms on the back of her neck and cheeks, Emalay pushed herself to her feet and glanced around. It was still too early for her to return to camp and she still hadn't caught anything to eat.

Deciding to follow the river, the lithe Myrian stepped off the shore and chose to pick through the foliage. If she had come for water, it was not beyond reason that some other tasty morsel would have as well. Emalay had never been good at hunting or tracking, preferring to set traps and wait than leap and chase after desperately fleeing creatures. Leave that to the children, she had more pride than that.

It was as she stalked along, looking carefully about for a thick, strong vine that she could use as a trap that the sharp smell of salt hit her nose. Straightening in a jerky, startled movement Emalay stared intently in the direction the breeze had come. "Salt?" Her voice was barely a murmur. Apparently, she wasn't very good with directions either. There was no way she was near the sea!

Forgetting all about her traps, Emalay moved quickly to the river bank, hopping from stone to stone as she followed it to its end, hardly ready to believe that she was only a stones throw from the Suvan. But sure enough, after a few chimes of leaping along, the crash of the waves could be heard.

"No way."

[Flashback] What a Crazy Random Happenstance (Dasvek)

Postby Dasvek on July 5th, 2012, 3:54 am

Dasvek was mildly annoyed, and it was his own damn fault. He had spent several days perfecting a new beat to play for an upcoming birthing festival in his clan, when one of his clan's most heavily tattooed elders came along and berated him up and down the clan hall for being so lazy. The clan still needed food, workers, supplies, not a new song. So he had sent Dasvek out on a long, dangerous, and annoying mission. He was to go the eastern coast of their Goddess' jungle, to the sandy beaches, collect several bundles of a special type of Suvan driftwood. The Taut Drums use it to make a unique type of drum and roarer, with sounds unlike any other. It was rare because it was so petching far away and was rarely deemed worth the trip. So his clan dispensed it as punishments for any of the untamed youths, which brought Dasvek slumping along in a foul mood next to some mosquito infested river.

He had his spear and drum strapped to his back, his roarer and waterskin on his hips, his bagh nahk dangling over the backs of his thighs, his hatchet strapped to the outside of his right thigh, a pack slung over his shoulder, and several other knives strapped almost at random. The path ahead ended at a bunch of woody vines, and he sighed loudly, throwing Myrian caution to the wind. He pulled his hatchet from his thigh, and approached the mess. He drew that hatchet back and brought it down, embedding in one of the vines, not severing through on one stroke. Annoyed, he was reminded of a song he'd made on the way over. He slashed away while harshly singing, a song he called snake meat,

"The best kind of snake to eat
Is one with a blade in it's meat.
I once thought a snake was a vine
As I hummed a tune, and kept my time
And when I grabbed its scaly back
It hissed and turned to attack

My spear lunged and plunged and thrusted
But that petching stick can't be trusted
And the Dhani began to escape
So I pulled the knife I held at my nape
And lined up the shot, hand steady
The blade quivered at the ready

The blade flew straight and fast
But the bad luck couldn't last
Wrong again Dasvek would be
And that snake continued to flee
Right twixt the mans legs splayed
With knife of bone, snake was filleted."

By the time he was done singing, the vine barricade was in shreds at his feet, his breath ragged, his arm and back tired. He strapped the hatchet to its place, and continued along the river, whistling the tune of his song. A full bell into his journey, his musically inclined ears picked up the cries of sea birds, much harsher and different sounding from the inland birds. He pressed forward, a bit excitedly for his journey to be half over, and he burst through the trees, throwing up a hand to block out Syna's rays, his feet sinking into the dry sand, the waves crashing in front of him. He'd finally arrived.

"Ayayayayayayaya!"

[Flashback] What a Crazy Random Happenstance (Dasvek)

Postby Emalay on July 5th, 2012, 5:26 am

The sea never ceased to amaze her. She had been to visit the original shores of her tribe a handful of times, but each had been far too brief and riddled with tedious purpose. A death, a birth, a marriage. Pale eyes rolled skyward at the very thought. Pointless, wastes of time they had all been, except for when she had been called upon to dance of course. She was the only one in the tribe with any kind of rhythm.

Emalay, grinning viciously at the thought of her people fawning over her skill, stepped out onto the sand. The sun warmed grains moved aside, making room for her foot and then falling back over the top and through her toes; it was an extremely pleasant feeling that elicited a pleasured sigh. It felt much too good after days of squishy, moist forest floor.

So there she stood, eyes closed, head tilted back to accept the warm caress of Syna's light as she wriggled her toes in the sand, even the way the waves crashed on the shore soothing her into a stupor. This was where she belonged, this was where she could truly feel like one with her dancing. So quiet, so peaceful.

And then the screeching ripped the peace away, the smoldering of her creamy brown eyes ruined by the downward trend of her brows now, the crinkle of displeasure that appeared on her forehead. She knew that voice... that shriek. Dasvek.

Taking a step backwards into the cover of the trees, Emalay waited for the oblivious Myrian to saunter past, shouting his presence to the whole area. For the second time, eyes rolled skyward and a slight shake of her head as a hand dipped and grasped one of the ribbons at her hip. "Too easy.." was the soft mutter to herself, tongue darting out and over her lips as she slowly began to swing the dagger, parallel to her side until it was a flashing green blur.

Crouching, Emalay waited until Dasvek passed in front of her on the way to the water, a savage grin parting her lips as she flicked her wrist a little faster, but only for a moment. The ribbon was released at the apex of its circle; a sloppy throw in any other circumstance. However, Emalay wanted it to arch over the man, whistling angrily on the way down before burying itself completely in the sand right where he was about to place his foot with a muffled plunk. Emalay laughed.

"Careful, there."

[Flashback] What a Crazy Random Happenstance (Dasvek)

Postby Dasvek on July 5th, 2012, 11:39 pm

Dasvek heard the strange swirling of Ema's dagger, but couldn't place the origin, thinking it sounded like a broken roarer. Then it stopped, and with it he stopped. Then his ears heard the high pitched whistle, head cocking to the side as he tried to place the sound.

Shunk.

He heard a woman's voice telling him to be cautious, a voice that seemed familiar, but his memory was slipping him. He looked down and saw a dagger with a long, green ribbon sunken into the beach. He reached his toes out and gripped the hilt, then raised his lower leg up to his waist, and grabbed it by the blade. His toes, filthy from the many days of barefooted travel, passed on a copious amount of mud and filth to the hilt, then down the length of the ribbon, smearing the green with black and brown. His eyes, having adjusted to the sunlight, saw a hair the color of wet sound framing an annoyed, but fierce face. Again, familiar seeming, but he couldn't figure it out, but if she was out here, she was likely of one specific clan.

Handing her dagger back to her, "You're one of those Tidal Spears right? Guarding our Goddess' jungle from crabs and those blue eyed boat huggers?"

He moved past her out to the beach, and sat down just at the edge of the surf, ass sinking into the warm grains. He pulled his drum off his back, and placed one against the skin of the drum, the other listening to the sound of the surf. He could hear the loud crashing of waves against the beach, the sloshing of the aftermath, the swish as it pulled away. He continued listening to the sounds, eyes closed, totally focused, trying to think of a beat worthy of a marriage of Myri and Laviku.

Three loud center strikes. Thumpthumpthump... No that wasn't right. He needed to get the undertone going first. With just his left hand, he started fingertaps halfway to the center, in quick succession. dududududududududu Close, but was missing that water feel. His other hand was held parallel to the skin while left tapped away. He pulled it in close to his chest, and chopped it outward, just scraping the drum skin with a satisfying shhhh. He did this several times rapidly, combining it with his tapping, and found a satisfying result. Dshdshdshdshdshdsh Then for the crashing wave, every eighth beat, his tapping hand made a fist and struck the center of the drum.

Dshdshdshdshdshdshdshdump. Dshdshdshdshdshdshdshdump.

While continuing this beat, he began listening for other sounds of the beach. He could hear the loud squawks of sea birds, the rustling of leaves in the breeze.

Dshdshtaktakdshdshdshbump

Happy with the beat, "So what is it you Tidal Spears do in your spare time? I'm sure guarding the sands doesn't take all of your efforts, day in and day out. Oh and I'm Dasvek, Taut Drum, but I'm sure you knew that already," then not giving her a chance to reply, "I was sent here to find some of the Suvan driftwood. Such a pain. It's not even that useful, we don't need those kinds of woods, especially all the way from out here."

[Flashback] What a Crazy Random Happenstance (Dasvek)

As soon as her dagger had landed, Emalay had started towards the man to retrieve her weapon. However, the drummer got to it first, not even bothering to expend the energy it took to bend like a normal being and snatch the thing free of the sand. No, instead he mimicked the monkeys that loitered in the trees behind them, twisting and contorting his feet and legs in the most awkward of ways.

"Was that really necessary?" Her now ruined ribbon was offered back to her, nose wrinkled in annoyance as she stooped to rub the foot gunk off into the sand. There were few things Emalay cared about, and her daggers were one of them. "Oh, look. It's completely ruined. I'll never keep a grip on it now." As a demonstration, the woman palmed the ribbon and began to swing it. Only a few quick jerks of her wrist and it was flying off in a random direction, causing her to heave a sigh and rub at her brow in exasperation.

By the time Emalay fetched her dagger for the second time, Dasvek had already plopped himself down into the sand and was aimlessly talking away. To her? She couldn't tell. If he had been, she was out of hearing for most of it. Tucking her dagger back into the sash, Emalay simply turned to face the ocean, closing her eyes and enjoying the feel of the wind whip her hair against her face. The air never moved like this amongst the trees.

"Tidal Spears?" Her clan name brought her back, looking over her shoulder to where she had last seen the man sitting.. Oh, and there he was. In the same spot. "That's my tribe, yes. Though we're no longer on the shores, but instead down by the Basin-" But he was already trailing into another thought, a faraway look in his eye as he almost idly brought his drum up and around into his lap. Emalay eyed it silently, watching his fingers as he tapped various beats over the surface. The moment he got the beat right, she found herself nodding appreciatively despite her former irritation. Yes, the waves. She could hear them both on the shore behind her and beneath his hands.

Just like the first time Emalay had heard him play, all those years ago, Dasvek's beat caused the passion to well up inside of her, almost as if her blood changed it's course, surging and pumping along with the music. Before she could really do anything about it, Emalay felt her muscles relaxing, her breathing morphing into its controlled rhythm as she bend fluidly forward, her arms scooping out and down as if she were trying to pick up a large boulder. The music fully took her then and she leap into the air just as the waves crashed onto the beach behind her, landing lightly on her right foot as it sunk into the sand, back arching over backwards and her legs slowly following. Up and over in a graceful, lazy wave...

It lasted only a few moments, the beautiful echo of the waves, the music and the dance, before he interrupted it again with his chatter. Frustration released itself through her nose as a sharp huff as she was cut off, arms crossing defensively across her chest as her hips shifted and she slowly turned to face the man. "Emalay." The name was cut short with a click of her teeth, those pale eyes boring into Dasvek's face. He clearly didn't remember her at all, despite the fact that they had already met before.

"Well, shouldn't you be... uh... gathering driftwood, then? You might be good with that drum but you're far best when not talking."
