Testing The Grounds (gfed)

Slowly, very slowly, Malia started to calm down and catch her breath again. She didn’t react when Uldr spoke of how He liked her real name better, indicating that He knew quite a bit about her origin and background. She should have anticipated it, shouldn’t she? But then, nobody knew what the Gods had in store for their followers, how they chained them even if they didn’t believe anymore, what nasty tricks they used. Tanroa was different, of course, but Uldr was like the personification of some of the worst character traits ever. Simple hate he was.

Malia, although that same feeling was still pulsing through her veins, infusing her ichor and pounding in her undead heart, slowly got back to the familiar emptiness she was used to. Oh, it’d never be the same again. Every second she lived she’d feel what He had planted inside her, exist with a curse that was even worse than living forever.

Because the waves of extreme feelings dispersed, she could control herself and keep her mouth shut about the following explanations. Being a God, Uldr would know the dream she chased regarding Rhysol … and perhaps He could help her in more ways than giving her power? Wheels inside her head started spinning now, as she contemplated possible risks and dangers of her asking the appropriate questions and the probability of an agreement that went beyond the contract. Wouldn’t it chain her even tighter to the God of Undeath? Did she really want that?

Following His finger with her eyes, Malia realized the remnants of her clothing were still lying on the ground, pretty much shredded to pieces. For a moment her mind wasn’t quick enough to recognize what He meant. Should she pick it up? But she couldn’t wear it anymore. She certainly wouldn’t play the cleaning maid in His temple, even less so in His presence. Surely He had less valuable followers to do those tasks for him? Like that bootlicker of a priest, for example. So Malia didn’t move, but rather listened to the rest of the explanations. She should have asked for the information in the first place. If He hadn’t been so delighted, she might have been dismissed without knowing the important side notes. Think, think, she whispered to her emotion-infused brain.

Indeed, what He presented to her was shock therapy: Followers with more marks being able to control her and life-long service … or longer, depending on how much Uldr liked her as a follower. Malia swallowed, burying strong emotions that were flaring up in her eyes once again. One thing she knew: No matter what He said, she’d try to come free of those chains as soon as she had completed the Kahnikivas story.

Nevertheless she spit out some more words: “I will try to keep it in mind.” Sarcasm, yes. What else could she do to let out even a little bit of what was raging inside her? There had to be a way. There had to be a way. Anything else was fine. Those thoughts were rolling around in her mind again and again.

Feel lucky. Hah! He was playing a game with her; that much was obvious. Only what kind of game Malia couldn’t decipher yet. Gods were hard to read … As a Nuit, she perhaps had a tiny advantage, compared to pulsers, but she still didn’t know how so much power felt like, how it altered one’s psyche and mindset. It certainly would be interesting to find out.

And because she still couldn’t think straight, although she tried, tried so hard, there were more words escaping her grip and flowing out into the air. Like water. Dark and thick with blood. “What about the Rhysol follower? What is your position, assuming that the God Himself will enter the stage sooner or later?” You have agreed to help me. She was guessing now, hoping that Gods with similar domains held some kind of antipathy for one another. The Valterrian was proof that divine wars were indeed possible and that Gods and Goddesses didn’t live in perfect harmony in the Ukalas.

Perhaps Malia could use that fact to her advantage? If only she knew more about relationships between the divines … But then she sensed and saw that Uldr was gone, gone like He had never spoken to her. She was on her own again, alone with His slimy follower.

Testing The Grounds (gfed)

"He's gone, little one, like a flash of lightning," the priest chuckled, taking notice of Azola's confused state. Then again, it was only to be expected. She would get used to it in time, but the true awakening to undeath left nothing unchanged in a person's psyche or body. It was good enough she hadn't already succumbed to hate and tried to assault him in a fit of rage. It would have been a shame to have to restrain her so soon. "He never stays long. I think he gets bored with our imperfect ways and flies to spy on his other toys, like any child. Perhaps that is for the best."

The priest saw the disgust in the Nuit's eyes and knew that she despised him, despised his servile attitude to Uldr, despised the fun he was having right now as he made light fun of her shock. It was fine. Perfectly fine. Boss Rubik had hated her from the first moment, or he wouldn't have tried to convert her in the first place. She had tickled his hatred in such a beautiful way, like pollen to a sneeze. And, she was afraid of nothing, not even of losing herself, as long as she did what she existed for. Pitiful, and worth hating. If she understood how things worked, she would strive to hate him back twice as hard. It was really her one chance to climb the ranks of Uldr's army.

The man shrugged. "He has agreed to help you against Rhysol in some way, has he not? As a follower, are you not supposed to believe what your god has told you in person?" He was chuckling now, barely refraining from laughter. An uncommon sight for a Nuit. Their faces did not look like they were made for stretching in such a way. He pointed a finger. "In the meantime, you wield more power than you can imagine, Azola or whatever your name is. Play with the system, not against it. Consider what you just went through. Promises. Deception. Lies and half-truths. And ultimately, chains and a prison."

His mouth cracked a smile. "What's the logical next step? Very simple. Make others go through the same. You may be the weakest link now… but with the first convert, you will be second-to-last, then third-to-last. You may have others slaving under you before you know it… The only way to treasure this pain is to unleash it upon another. Cruel? Definitely. Profitable? You bet it." It was all clear now, how Uldr's ranks worked. Once you got into the scheme, you could profit by replicating it unto others. Or you could refuse and remain on the bottom rung of misery; ultimately this mattered little in Uldr's eyes. It was sadistic and simple, like children can be.

Would Malia succumb to the merciless wheel of Uldr's hate?

"Are we done here? You should be out recruiting new forces, after all. And do pick up those clothes before you go, if you please. Tidiness in my sanctuary is a pet peeve of mine, you know."

Malia blinked. He was gone. Uldr was gone. She felt relief wash over her, but disappointment at the same time. For her the meeting hadn't been over yet. However, she had to admit that she didn't particularly enjoy the God's company.

She didn't pay attention to the priest's words. What he said and did was of no importance as long as she sensed that he wouldn't do her any harm. He seemed to be a mere pawn of Uldr, caught in His web of hate and disgust and control. She thought herself to be above that, no follower of Him although she now carried His gnosis mark. Perhaps it had been a mistake after all. Claimed by Him, she couldn't deny that she had some business with the God of Undeath. However, she was already crafting a plan that most likely differed from what Uldr might have in mind for her. She didn't mind. She wasn't afraid. Being a Nuit did have some advantages, after all. Endless time would help her to come up with a solution to all of her problems. As a natural consequence, Malia believed herself to be a follower of Tanroa, and Tanroa alone.

The burning hate inside her slowly cooled down with the leave of its object. Now that logic and reason took the place of raw emotion, she slowly felt like she could move again and leave that place. Everything reminded her of Uldr, even the presence of the babbling priest. Almost against her will, however, she listened to his words. He had a point. She'd have people under her, people she could control. Uldr's mark gave her physical power as well as mental power over others. In her current situation, it was far more important to utilize the advantages of her mark. Getting rid of the disadvantages was for later … At least that was what she thought. If she was confronted with unexpected problems along the way, she'd have to rethink her strategy. With a nod, she acknowledged the priest's advice, if it could even be called that.

As soon as he started to talk about the remains of her clothes, she didn't listen anymore. “Shut up already”, she whispered, nevertheless picking up her clothes. Granted that she didn't face any more obstacles, Malia would try to find a way into the citadel from the underground chapel. Since she had originally been led there by a reimancer who had opened the earth, she couldn't trace her steps back the same way she had come from. So there had to be a hidden pathway up to Sahova. In case she didn't find it on her own, she'd ask the priest.

But the part of Malia that wasn't influenced by the seed of hate in her heart wanted to escape from that place and Uldr's main location of worship as soon as possible. Being around followers, older individuals than her, put her into immediate danger.

She'd find her own path of walking the thin line between sense and sensibility.

It was simple enough for Azola to find the secret door that led her into the bowels of Sahova, probably the same that the Boss used himself to visit the temple. There was no risk of the Nuit giving out his secret; angering the god of undeath was not a wise course of action, especially for a recent convert. Time would tell if her choice had been wise or questionable or even foolish. For now, however, she felt a pleasant tingling in her limbs that triggered distant memories of when she'd had a beating heart that pumped red blood instead of stationary ichor. Whether that would be enough to defeat her nemesis remained to be seen.
